Remembering the smartphones that we met in 2013, we can safely say that it was marked by MediaTek chipsets. Thanks to the MT6572 and MT6589, many manufacturers have created successful solutions with an excellent price / quality ratio. The Lenovo S650 smartphone appeared on our market at the end of 2013, it can be attributed to the next generation devices, because it is built on the new MediaTek MT6582 platform. The model boasts not only updated hardware, but also new software. Let's get to know him better and find out what the innovations are.

Lenovo S650 comes in a cardboard box with a manufacturer-specific design. In it you will find: a smartphone, a charger with an output current of 1 A, a USB cable, a simple in-ear headset, a functional stand-case and a minimum of related documentation.

Design and ergonomics

The case of Lenovo S650 is completely made of plastic. The central part of the front panel is occupied by a screen with a fairly wide frame, under which are the touch keys "Menu", "Home" and "Back". Above it is the manufacturer's logo, a front camera and a speaker grill, in the left corner of which a light indicator is hidden. Long press "Menu" brings up a list of recently launched applications, "Home" - the launch of the Google Now assistant. On the rounded sidewalls are located: two separate volume keys (on the right), a microphone hole with an interface connector (on the bottom), a power button and a mini-jack (on the top). These elements are located on a thin glossy frame, expanding to the bottom of the case and extending to the back of the smartphone. Here you can see the main camera lens and the LED cover. After removing the cover and taking out the battery, we get access to two slots for Mini-SIM-cards and a memory card.

Different types of plastic are used - the sides and buttons are glossy and a little slippery, the cover is more matte, with small perpendicular notches. In bright artificial light, pearlescent inclusions are visible, shimmering in the light. In addition to the reviewed black and silver version, Lenovo S650 is available in white.

The assembly of the smartphone is at a good level. With strong compression, the case does not creak, but it lacks rigidity - it lends itself to a slight bend, due to which the lower lid latches can move away. At 138x8.8x69.8mm, it weighs just 126 grams and feels lighter than you'd expect. Small thickness and rounded edges allow the Lenovo S650 to lie comfortably in the hand, but physical buttons spoil the ergonomics. They are thin, slightly protrude above the body, relatively tight, with a short stroke and, moreover, are made of the same plastic as the sidewalls. It will be difficult for people with small hands to reach the power key, which is located in the center of the upper edge, and the bundled case further reduces the usability of the volume keys. This could completely spoil the impression of the ergonomics of the smartphone, if not for a few tricks. Firstly, in the settings you can activate the ability to turn on the screen with the volume keys, and secondly, you can lock the screen by shaking the smartphone in your hands.

The complete case provides not only protection, but also additional functionality. The base of glossy mother-of-pearl plastic protects the ends and rises above the screen surface, preventing it from touching the table surface. The rubber insert at the back contains a metal plate, so it can be bent. In this position, the case acts as a stand.

Screen

Lenovo S650 IPS-display has a diagonal of 4.7 inches with a resolution of 960 by 540 pixels. Its minimum brightness is 60 cd/m2, the average is 249 cd/m2, and the maximum is 484 cd/m2. The minimum brightness is too high, it can be lowered using third-party applications, such as Lux Lite. The maximum brightness level ensures good readability outdoors in sunny weather. Judging by the photos of the display on the street, we can conclude that it is not an OGS screen that is used, although the air gap is extremely small.

Automatic brightness control exposes a sufficiently high brightness in all lighting conditions. Under normal use, the screen does not raise any claims, it looks quite high quality. Vivid, rich colors, oleophobic coating, thanks to which the finger glides perfectly on the glass, and the screen itself practically does not collect fingerprints. The disadvantages include only not the highest resolution by modern standards. In a smartphone of the end of 2013, with such a diagonal, I want to see a full HD screen. However, even at qHD resolution, the picture does not look grainy.

Interface

Lenovo S650 is running Android operating system version 4.2.2. As in past smartphones, the company uses its own graphical shell, which changes the appearance of the system beyond recognition. In Lenovo P780, S820, S920, which we met earlier, Lenovo Launcher of the second version was installed, in S650 - the third. By adding one to the serial number of the version, the shell has gained new functionality.

A key feature - support for design themes remained in place. The Theme Center lets you choose from several pre-installed themes that change the look of stock app icons, wallpaper, lock screen, startup animation, and colors of some built-in apps. Each of these options can be configured separately, by assembling your own theme from the "pieces".

There are settings to change the animation of paging desktops, enable cyclic scrolling, the ability to backup settings. There is also support for gestures. They're less "advanced" than third-party launchers like Nova, allowing you to bring up the notification bar or recent apps list with a single swipe.

As before, the settings menu is divided into three tabs.

But these are all trifles. The main change is that the shell has abandoned the usual application menu. Now all installed programs immediately go to the desktops, which can be up to 18, and it is proposed to sort them into folders.

The notification shade contains a row of ten scrollable shortcuts for quickly changing settings, the second tab contains 15 such switches. You can change their order at your own discretion. Simply tapping them will change state or switch modes, holding them will take you to the corresponding settings menu. It is possible to activate panel minimization after pressing the switch.

Part of the functionality is familiar from solutions from other manufacturers. This concerns the design of folders, the animation of their opening and the appearance of the menu of recent applications - they repeat the decisions of the MIUI firmware. In the menu of recently running applications, you can clear the RAM by closing running programs. By dragging the application icon down, a "lock" will appear in its left corner - this means that it will work even after clearing the RAM, by sliding the icon up you will close the application.

The interaction with the shell is as follows. To create a folder, you need to drag the icon of one application to another. Having entered the folder, you can “pull out” a shortcut from it, the folder will exist as long as it contains at least one program. A pinch to the center brings up a menu with desktop windows. Here you can change their number, swap them and assign the main screen. By swiping up from the bottom of the screen, a list of widgets appears, from where they can be placed on the desired desktop.

In general, Lenovo's new shell has become more functional, while the number of possible settings has decreased. She looks more beautiful and complete. Although many of the "chips" are familiar from other shells and third-party firmware, it can be argued that the best solutions have been copied.

It is worth noting that initially the smartphone has a large number of pre-installed Yandex applications, clients for accessing social networks. Some of them duplicate the functionality of Google programs. Fortunately, most of them can be removed. There are also Lenovo applications: SHAREit - in order to share various content with friends, SECUREit antivirus, SYNCit - for creating cloud backups of contacts, programs.

Calls and multimedia

Support for two SIM-cards is implemented on the basis of one radio module - during a conversation on one card, the second one is turned off. The settings provide the ability to set separate ringtones and notification melodies for them, as well as default parameters - from which one it is preferable to send SMS, call, transfer data. In most of these smartphones, when you open the Messages and Calls application, a switch appears in the status bar that allows you to quickly change the selected SIM card before taking action. In the case of Lenovo S650, the notification is also present, but it takes you to the corresponding settings item. Therefore, if you use both cards equally often, it is better to select the “Always ask” item in the settings from which card to make a call or send messages - in this case, the corresponding applications will have two call and send SMS keys.

The hardware part responsible for voice communications is moderately implemented. The call speaker is moderately loud, but its sound is absolutely flat, the vibrating alert is weak and easy to miss. The quality of the microphone and speaker is average. During testing, several times there were complaints about poor hearing when talking in a noisy environment. The volume of the speaker is enough for a conversation in a quiet environment, if it is noisy around, then the interlocutor is almost inaudible.

Multimedia features are implemented at the proper level. The smartphone plays Full HD-video at a frequency of 60 frames / s, but the built-in player has not yet learned how to play AC3 audio tracks. The quality of music playback is at a good level. The absence of noise, high volume and generally pleasant sound will not disappoint music lovers.

Performance and Memory

Lenovo S650 is based on SoC MediaTek MT6582. Like previous solutions, it is manufactured using a 28 nm process technology, includes four Cortex-A7 cores operating at a frequency of 1.3 GHz and a Mali-400 MP2 dual-core GPU. The amount of RAM is 1 GB, built-in - 8 GB (available 5.62 GB), there is a slot for memory cards.

There are no performance issues. Scrolling desktops and animations are smooth, applications launch quickly. There are heavy games, for example, Real Racing 3 sets the maximum graphics settings, the frame rate is enough for a comfortable game. The only nitpick is the amount of RAM. With a small set of installed programs, after downloading the smartphone, approximately 400 MB are free, while working with several applications, about 150 MB remain free. Obviously, a custom shell requires a few more resources than the standard one. When working with heavy applications, it is sometimes unloaded from memory. It turns out that 1 GB is enough "back to back", and the extra 500 MB would definitely not hurt.

The work of GPS and Wi-Fi is not satisfactory. It takes less than a minute to "cold start", the subsequent search for satellites is much faster. The speed of data exchange over Wi-Fi is maximum.

Camera

The smartphone has two cameras: front with a resolution of 0.3 megapixels and the main 8 megapixel with autofocus. The front camera does not shine with the quality of the picture and will provide an acceptable picture for communication in Skype, you should not expect more from it. The main one demonstrates consistently good photo and video quality, both when shooting indoors and when shooting outdoors. Pictures are obtained with natural colors and relatively detailed. In normal mode, the camera shoots at an average speed, but creating HDR photos will require 3-4 seconds of waiting and a static scene, as moving objects are blurred.

Sample photos taken with Lenovo S650 smartphone

An example of a Full HD video taken with a Lenovo S650 smartphone

The camera app is a heavily simplified "Super Camera" that we saw in the Lenovo P780. The general interface is similar, but as soon as you go into the settings, you will see a menu that is standard for most Chinese smartphones.

autonomy

The Lenovo S650 is powered by a 2000 mAh removable battery. In standby mode, the smartphone is discharged slightly, like most other models based on MediaTek chipsets. But as soon as you turn on the screen and start doing something, the charge starts to melt before your eyes. In a typical mode of use for the author, with all communication modules turned on, with a small number of calls, reading the Twitter feed and articles throughout the day, synchronizing one Google account, and listening to music for an hour or two, the charge is enough for a light day of work - taken at 8 in the morning from charging, the smartphone will show about 20% of the charge by night and will be asked to the outlet. Already, many smartphones of different price categories are able to hold out in this mode for two days.

You can improve the overall picture a bit with the Power Manager app. In it, you can create power profiles, configure the operation of all communication modules, the display, the background operation of applications, etc. By setting up the power consumption yourself and sacrificing the full operation of the smartphone, you can “squeeze out” two days of work, but it’s better to count on a day of work, and with the active use of various functions, charging will be needed before you get home.

Results

Lenovo S650 can be called one of the most controversial smartphones from the company, which we had a chance to meet recently. On the one hand, it has a relatively unique design and its own face, but you don’t feel the “thing” in your hand. The poor location of the power key smooths out the possibility of locking the screen by shaking the smartphone and turning it on with the volume buttons. A high-quality bright screen is accompanied by mediocre autonomy and a quiet earpiece. A beautiful and functional shell is able to fall in love with this smartphone, but what to do with the rest of the shortcomings? Roughly speaking, for every fat "plus" here you can find several minuses. In such a situation, the price of a smartphone plays an important role. At the time of writing the review, large online stores sell the model for 2499 hryvnia, and many small ones ask for it from 1800 hryvnia with a “store guarantee”, which is a typical picture for Lenovo smartphones. Where and under what conditions to buy the S650 is a personal matter for everyone, but do not forget about the existence of solutions from other brands, which will certainly allow you to get a less controversial experience.

The lenovo s650 smartphone does not act as a "poor" version of an android device. This is a very advanced device designed for easy use. Buyers are invited to appreciate not only the attractive appearance and good performance, but also find something more interesting in it. However, the model also has certain disadvantages. What are the main features of a smartphone presented by a world-famous manufacturer?

External Data

The body of the phone is made entirely of plastic. In the center of the front panel is the display, which has a fairly wide frame with touch buttons placed under it. In the upper part, as usual, there is a company logo, a front camera module and a speaker.

The side faces accommodate two separate buttons, the task of which is to adjust the volume. There is also a microphone hole, a power key.

On the back panel, it is easy to find the main camera. Removing the cover gives access to the battery and two SIM card slots. The build of the phone is good. If you squeeze the device, its body does not emit squeaks and other extraneous sounds. True, there is a little lack of rigidity, as a result of which the latches located at the bottom sometimes move away. It should be noted another important feature. The rear panel of the smartphone is laser-treated, so it is pleasant to the touch and creates comfort when using the device. In addition, it is also additional protection against fingerprints and scratches, which maintains an attractive appearance of the device.

Equipment

The box in which the Lenovo s650 smartphone is supplied contains the device itself, a battery, a charger, a microUSB cable, documentation and headphones. Quite such a standard set, but it is worth noting that some Lenovo models cannot boast of such a complete set.

Camera

The main camera module, which the lenovo s650 phone has, is 8 megapixels, it is equipped with autofocus. It is enough to create high-quality pictures. With the main camera, you can shoot outdoors or indoors. Photos are acceptable, color reproduction is good. But in order to create HDR shots, you have to wait a few seconds, otherwise the objects turn out to be blurry. The front camera has only 0.3 megapixels, from which it is easy to conclude that it does not shine with image quality. But it is able to provide a decent picture when making calls via Skype.

Display

The screen with a diagonal of 4.7 inches is able to provide acceptable readability in bright sunny weather, subject to maximum brightness. If necessary, its level can be reduced. The air layer is small, as evidenced by the photographs taken when shooting outdoors. In general, the display is quite standard, it does not stand out from many other models presented by Lenovo.

In terms of performance, there are no problems. Flipping through desktops and animations is fast and smooth. Applications launch quickly, without delay. There is even an option to run some heavy games. The disadvantage is the amount of memory. If you install all the necessary programs, the user will have approximately 400 MB, and if you work with several applications at the same time, even less - only 150 MB. Thus, the amount of memory provided "back to back". If the manufacturer had provided an additional 500 MB, they certainly would not have been superfluous.

Offline work

The lenovo s650 smartphone is equipped with a 200 mAh removable battery. If the phone is in standby mode, its charge decreases slowly, similar to other modifications created on MediaTek chipsets. However, when you turn on the screen, as well as manipulate the device, the charge literally melts before our eyes. If you use the phone in normal user mode, which is suitable for a modern person, the device will last only one day. Even if in the morning the smartphone is only removed from the socket with a full charge, literally by the evening it will ask to be returned. This is a serious drawback, especially considering that most modern devices can already hold out for two days in a similar mode.

What is the conclusion from all of the above? Lenovo s650 phone is one of the most controversial models. If we consider its features on the one hand, it is the owner of a unique design. Despite this, the real "thing" is not felt in the hand. Of course, the placement of the buttons is bad, but this unpleasant moment is smoothed out by the ability to lock the screen by simply shaking the phone. The high-quality screen is an advantage, but the overall impression is overshadowed by a very mediocre battery life and a quiet speaker designed for conversation.

Of course, an attractive appearance can fall in love with you at first sight, but it’s hard to argue with other shortcomings. In general, each advantage is opposed by several disadvantages, and quite significant ones. The cost of the phone also plays a big role. It is pretty decent, despite the shortcomings of the device. Should I buy this model? No one will give an answer to this question, since buying a smartphone is a personal matter for everyone.

Characteristics

Based on the MTK6582 Quad Core processor, with a frequency of 1.3GHz, in conjunction with 1GB of RAM, the Lenovo S650 smartphone is able to solve quite complex tasks assigned to it. The built-in memory in the phone is 8 GB, but if this is not enough for someone, there is support for microSD memory cards with a capacity of up to 32 GB.

The phone supports simultaneous operation of two SIM cards of WCDMA and GSM standards. There are modules Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS. The 2000 mAh battery is able to last for one day of active work or 2-3 days in a more relaxed mode.

The dimensions of the device are 138 x 69.8 x 8.7mm. The weight of the phone is 130g. In the Antutu Benchmark program, the smartphone scored a well-deserved 17148 points.

Screen and sound

The Lenovo S650 has a 4.7-inch IPS screen with a bright, contrasty picture and wide viewing angles. The display resolution is 960 x 540 pixels, which is not the best result, but it will fit perfectly for watching videos, surfing and playing games. There are no complaints about color reproduction to the screen - everything is perfect. The sound in the smartphone is quite loud and of high quality.

Camera

The phone has two cameras of 0.3 Mp and 8 Mp with flash. You can see examples of video from the camera below.

The quality of the video recording leaves much to be desired.

Appearance

In appearance, the phone almost repeats its larger counterparts and the Lenovo S960 Vibe X.

The thin case and shiny inserts (under the metal) give the phone elegance.

The front panel of the device houses light and proximity sensors, a speaker grille, a Lenovo logo, a 4.7-inch screen, and three touch navigation buttons. On the back cover there is a camera with a flash, the Lenovo logo and a speaker grille. The panel itself is made of textured plastic, pleasant to the touch.

minuses

  • battery

The Lenovo S650 smartphone turned out to be quite interesting and, thanks to its not oversized size and decent performance, is able to occupy its niche among phones of this class. However, the manufacturer should have thought about strengthening the batteries not only in the “P” series, but also in all other devices of its lineup.

Modern smartphones surprise with their performance and capabilities. However, sometimes for the comfortable performance of the necessary tasks, a time-tested model is quite enough, which cannot be attributed to novelties. Such a gadget is the characteristics of which we will consider in more detail.

Equipment

The smartphone is packed by the manufacturer in a cardboard box, on which there is practically no information. Most likely, this is the minimalist style of Lenovo, emphasizing that this device is still the "little brother" of the then-flagship smartphone Lenovo Vibe X.

For most buyers, it may be important that in addition to the charger, USB cable and documents, the manufacturer took care of the presence of a wired headset in the starter kit. Although it looks simple and, frankly, cheap, the sound turned out to be quite pleasant and can appeal to most unassuming music lovers.

Appearance

The smartphone received a 4.7-inch display, but it looks quite large. This is due to the wide frames around the screen, which can not be clearly called a minus, but some users may not like them. Despite such dimensions, the gadget lies pleasantly in the hand and does not slip out of it.

The case is completely made of plastic, matte in some places, and in some places with a metallized coating. The color of the case is light, pleasant, and with the right lighting, the effect of a golden sheen is also created. The device is assembled qualitatively, there are no backlashes and squeaks. In general, the smartphone gives the impression of a well-thought-out model, albeit from the budget segment. Many Lenovo smartphones can boast of this feature, the prices for which remain in the range of 7-8 thousand rubles.

The back cover is removable, under it are slots for SIM and memory cards. The Lenovo S650 battery is removable, which has become a rarity in most smartphones lately.

According to some reviews, the wear resistance of the body elements is quite high, and even with inaccurate use, the gadget will not lose its attractive appearance soon. The display is protected from fingerprints, which could appear during operation and interfere with the comfortable viewing of photos and videos.

Display

We touched on the topic of coverage a little, and now let's talk about the matrix. It, perhaps, can be safely called the weak side of this device, since it has a low resolution for a modern device, namely 960x540 pixels. With such parameters with a diagonal of 4.7 inches, pixelization becomes noticeable even to the naked eye, because of which the picture gets an unpleasant torn "ladder" structure, and the Lenovo S650 screen becomes more of a minus than a plus.

However, the rest of the display showed good results. Good color reproduction, without emphasizing any particular color, fairly large viewing angles, enough brightness to use the device even in sunny weather - all this can partly compensate for the low resolution of the display.

The sensor was able to perceive up to 5 touches at the same time, which is an ordinary indicator for state employees. But at the same time, any errors and sticking are completely absent, so it can be confidently called good and high-quality.

"Iron" characteristics

The main processor is the SoC platform known for most budget models of 2014-2015. It is a single-chip chip on which there is a processor with four cores capable of clocking up to 1.3 GHz, and a Mali-450MP2 video accelerator. The crystal is made according to the 28 nanometer process technology, which provides a fairly low power consumption and low heating of the device when working with resource-intensive processes.

The processor works in conjunction with 1 GB of RAM. This is not much by today's standards, but quite enough for comfortable work with two or three lightweight applications at the same time. In order to unload the RAM to the maximum, the system is optimized by the manufacturer, as a result of which about 500 MB is always available to the user, the rest is occupied by system applications. It is worth noting that in some Lenovo models with the same amount of RAM, a problem arises during operation, since only a fifth of the RAM remains available to the user. Here, the Lenovo S650, whose characteristics often do not differ from problematic models, undoubtedly wins.

Antutu's benchmark test shows a score of 17,000 ratings, which is comparable to flagships of yesteryear such as the HTC One X and Samsung Galaxy S3, although the Lenovo S650's specs seem less significant at first glance.

Smartphone connectivity

Nowadays, a smartphone without 4G support is sometimes considered too outdated, but do not forget that the higher the communication standard, the greater the battery consumption. This model does not support 4G, but the mode of all 3G frequencies and standards, including HSUPA and HSDPA, is fully implemented.

SIM-cards are used in a standard size, they do not need to be cut or changed to start using a smartphone. Traditionally, when making calls, one of them becomes inactive, since the device is equipped with only one radio module.

In addition to the radio module of the cellular network, the Lenovo C650 phone is equipped with Bluetooth 4.0 generation modules, as well as Wi-Fi with support for b / g / n protocols. If necessary, a smartphone can be turned into a portable Wi-Fi router in several stages. Check with your carrier in advance if there will be additional charges for this, as some companies have recently introduced this practice.

A smartphone is not complete without a GPS module. The signal strength of the satellites is quite confident even in cloudy weather. When testing in most cases, it took about 1 minute, while hot took less than half a minute, or even a few seconds.

Memory

The internal non-volatile memory of the smartphone is not particularly pleased with its size. It is a built-in flash drive with a capacity of 8 GB. Of it, about 3 GB are occupied by system files. In total, a little less than 5 GB of disk space is available to the user out of the box.

To expand it, you can use microSD memory cards up to 32 GB, preferably class 10, in order to ensure maximum performance. According to the reviews of users who tried to use larger memory cards, the smartphone simply refuses to see them, so when buying, you should rely on the limits declared by the manufacturer. However, comparing prices to Lenovo smartphones, this model wins in terms of price / quality ratio, and it's worth considering - perhaps this amount of memory will be quite enough.

Battery

The regular battery supplied with the smartphone received a rather mediocre volume of 2000 mAh. This is a small indicator in the modern world of battery-demanding gadgets, but for its modest characteristics, this battery is more than enough.

The smartphone comes with a charger capable of delivering power up to 1 A. With these indicators, it takes about 2 hours to fully charge the battery.

According to reviews, one charge is enough for the active use of a smartphone all day long, this is noticed by users commenting on the Lenovo S650 w3bsit3-dns.com topic. However, at the same time, you will have to connect it to power every night, which means that the resource of charge / discharge cycles of the battery will be used up in about 2.5 years.

Main and front cameras

The Lenovo S650 w3bsit3-dns.com smartphone was developed at a time when software image interpolation was still out of fashion, so the declared photo resolution corresponds to the resolution of the camera matrix. For the main camera, it is 8 megapixels, while the frontal situation is more sad - its indicator is only 0.3 megapixels, so you can forget about selfies. Considering the camera model is quite acceptable for its price segment.

The camera is quite decent for its level, in good lighting the pictures are rich and clear. However, when using automatic shooting settings, keep an eye on the result. Sometimes the software makes a mistake with the choice of mode, as a result of which the colors may be distorted, and highlights appear in the photo or, conversely, areas that are too dark.

The front camera can only be used for conversations using video messengers, but no more. You should not take pictures with it: you definitely can’t call them high-quality.

Smartphone setup

After removing from the box, the smartphone should be configured. In this, this model is no different from other Android devices. She has a set of service applications from Google on board, so it is recommended to immediately create an account for yourself to comfortably use your smartphone and synchronize data. The rest of the setting "Lenovo S650" is intuitive. The smartphone has hints regarding interface functions.

conclusions

The smartphone turned out to be solid and pleasant to use. It is suitable for those for whom communication is in the first place, and not entertainment. Of the minuses, one can only note the overheating of the processor during very long, heavy loads that are not provided for this hardware, the poor resolution of the display, and the version of Android that is already beginning to become obsolete. If this is not important for you, you can safely buy this model - otherwise it will not let you down. In addition, if necessary, repairing the Lenovo S650 is quite cheap due to the low prices for components, so an accidentally broken display will not be a tragedy.
