Probably every user who communicates in the messenger or social network accidentally sent the wrong message. For example, something that should be addressed to another recipient. Naturally, in such a situation, the question immediately arose - how to cancel it? And we all periodically make mistakes (spelling, punctuation, etc.) and typos in a conversation through applications. Of course, I also want to remove such a part of the correspondence with friends, relatives or colleagues even before the recipient reads it, in order to write everything correctly later.

Therefore, we decided to tell you, using the example of the popular whatsapp messenger, how to delete a message from your interlocutor.

To begin with, let's answer this question - is it possible to cancel a sent message at all? Or delete it from yourself and from the recipient himself? If we are talking about whatsapp, then yes. And it doesn’t matter on which device you communicate – on a tablet, iPhone or Android smartphone.

True, there are several "buts". Firstly, you will definitely be able to delete the message only on your account. In whatsapp of another participant in the correspondence, it can be saved. Secondly, you need to know the removal procedure itself and take into account some points. Next, let's talk about it.

Delete a message from the interlocutor in whatsapp

To delete a message for both users, that is, both the sender and the recipient, you must do the following:

  1. We open the desired chat with a specific interlocutor or correspondence in a group in the messenger.
  2. Click on the delivered message to be recalled.
  3. Keep your finger on it for a long time. Approximately 3-4 seconds.
  4. In the menu that opens, select the trash icon. Then click on the "delete from all" item. After that, the chat should display a record that this message has been deleted. The iphone is a little different. After pressing and holding, an additional menu with arrows will open, using which you need to find the “delete” item.
  5. Then we do everything as described above.

Previously, it was impossible to delete a message from all interlocutors in whatsapp. It was possible to correct the correspondence only on your account. But literally in October 2017 it came out special update for this service. Just in it, this useful and long-awaited feature was added. Before release new version program, the message disappeared only on your gadget, but not on the recipient. The one to whom the unwanted message was sent continued to see it.

By the way, WhatsApp also has the ability to completely delete a chat. True, if it is a group one, then this action will require administrator (or creator) rights. If you don't have them, just leave the chat. After that, all correspondence will become inaccessible to you.

What should be remembered?

Naturally, it was not without nuances and limitations. After all, you can delete a message from whatsapp from the recipient himself only if the following conditions are met:

  1. Both users use the most latest version messenger, in which this feature is implemented.
  2. The message was sent recently. To be more precise, you have only 7 minutes to delete it from the interlocutor and, for example, thereby hide the text of an unwanted message. Has it been more time? You don't even have to try - it won't work. You will also have the "delete from all" item disappear.
  3. Finally, there is a third condition. The message will be deleted if it has not been read by the recipient. In those situations when the recipient managed to view it, you will not even receive a notification that the deletion was successful. Moreover, the message itself will remain with the addressee. You will be lucky if at that moment the interlocutor does not have access to the Internet and “your words” do not have time to reach him.

What if the chat participant has old version whatsapp? Then it's all in vain. In this case, the message will not be deleted on his gadget. At the same time, do not forget that the recipient can see your message before you remove it from the correspondence. Therefore, rely on one hundred percent positive result not worth it.

For reference! If you need to delete a voice message in whatsapp, then go to "My files" or "Dispatcher". Then go to the messenger directory. Find the WhatsApp Voice Notes folder there (usually located in the Media folder). It is in it that everything is stored voice messages. Then remove the ones you don't need.

Is it possible not to delete, but to recall a message in WhatsApp?

Finally, we note that the whatsapp + version has long had an option that allows you to cancel a sent message. It's simple to use it. It is enough to do this:

  1. Let's go to the chat.
  2. Tap on the message you want to delete. We don't let go right away. Hold for a few seconds.
  3. In the additional menu that appears, click on the icon of 3 dots. It is hidden in the upper right corner.
  4. Select "Revoke". Then we confirm the command. That's all!

Deleting a sent message in WhatsApp is very simple: tap on it, keep pressing until the “basket” appears at the top of the screen, and then confirm the decision with the standard OK.

But we suspect that you did not come to this page for us to explain such banal things to you.

You are probably more interested in how quickly delete the message, while the addressee has not yet had time to read it. For example, when it went to the wrong person, in the wrong chat, or you just need to “take your words back.”

So, let's talk.

Delete before it is read, you can only if it, figuratively speaking, has not yet left your smartphone or tablet.

That is, you need to be in time before a “tick” appears next to the message in the chat (recall, 1 checkmark - the message has been sent, 2 checkmarks - the message has been received, 2 blue checkmarks - read).

BUT WhatsApp has a special feature called " Delete from everyone » ( Delete for Everyone). She appeared in the messenger after a recent update. So if you haven’t seen it yet, you must first update WhatsApp.

In terms of practicality, this is implemented quite sensibly. Seeing that the message has gone “in the wrong place”, but it seems like it has not yet been read, you instantly find it in the chat, quickly tap on it and keep pressing until a small menu pops up on the screen in which you need to click “ Delete for everyone«.

"Delete for all" can be used for . That is, in this way, you can delete not only unread texts in the chat, but also pictures, GIFs and other pictures, as well as videos and documents. The system works on both iOS and Android devices.

HOWEVER... Let's repeat. If the recipient has already read the message (there are two checkmarks and they are already blue), then use " Delete for everyone" there is no point.

Upon successful deletion of the message, instead of it, a special notification appears in the chat, which is visible to all participants in the correspondence, therefore it will still not work to hide the fact of sending the message. Also, remove unread message in this way is possible only during the first 7 minutes after it was sent.

We also note that "Delete for everyone" is only valid in new versions of WhatsApp, in the old version it simply will not work. In this case, if the message has not been deleted, then you do not receive a notification.

[Added] There is at least one more (albeit slightly extreme) way to delete a sent message in WhatsApp. Moreover, it works even after 7 minutes, that is, even after the “Delete for all” function has already turned off.

So, even if a lot of time has passed, but you still need to delete, then try the following:

  • quickly turn off Wi-Fi and Mobile Internet in a smartphone (or turn on Airplane mode?);
  • open "Settings", tap "Date and time" and "unscrew" the time back before the message was sent, which now needs to be deleted;
  • open WhatsApp, find this message, tap the trash can and select "Delete for everyone";
  • in "Settings" set the correct time.

Coming soon to whatsapp new feature- recall or edit those messages that have not yet been read by your interlocutor. According to the developers, this will allow users to avoid embarrassment if they sent a message without thinking carefully about the consequences.

Currently, this innovation is available in beta versions of WhatsApp on Android and iOS and will soon be implemented in stable builds of the messenger, including on Windows 10 Mobile.

If the message has not yet been read, the user will be able to either delete it or edit it. In the first case, the recipient will see a notification that the message has been retracted by the sender.

WhatsApp is also testing a few more innovations. One of the new features of the messenger will be the ability to track the location of group chat participants if they have opened access to their geolocation. This feature can be used to meet friends and loved ones, but is also likely to find less trivial uses - for example, in taxi dispatchers and public transport as free system tracking the location of employees (including for the purpose of their safety). However, the professional use of this feature will be hampered by the fact that it will be possible to share information about your location for only five minutes.

Another innovation that will probably be added to WhatsApp soon is to set photos as a status, which will be automatically deleted after a day. A similar feature was previously implemented in Snapchat and other instant messengers, whose users can send each other messages, photos and videos that disappear after 24 hours. In addition, this innovation is similar to the "Stories" section in Instagram, Facebook and VKontakte.

In the spring of 2016, the option to edit sent messages appeared in the Telegram messenger, which is being developed by the team of the founder of VKontakte, Pavel Durov. In January 2017, the developers added the ability to recall messages within 48 hours after being sent to this messenger.

One of WhatsApp's main competitors, the Viber messenger, is also preparing several innovations. In the near future, it will have the function of sending text messages, photos and videos, which will be deleted after some time. The period during which they will be visible will need to be specified before sending. In addition, Viber will allow you to share photos and videos with the original resolution. To do this, they must be sent as regular files - in this case, they are not processed and compressed. These innovations are already available in the iOS version of Viber and will soon be rolled out to other platforms, including Windows 10 Mobile and Windows 10.
