Traditional variants of boxes for receiving correspondence are rarely very original. Familiar blue metal boxes, decorated with a miniature padlock, may satisfy the unpretentious taste of their owner, but the eye of a creative owner will surely consider them as a fertile basis for creating an original exterior item. Ideas how to make mailbox, you can borrow from neighbors, whose fences are decorated with original and at the same time functional containers, or you can take as a basis the arrangement options described in our article.

When planning to make a mailbox for a private house, which will serve not only for its intended purpose, but also act as a harmonious addition to the architectural ensemble of a suburban area, you should first of all decide on its shape and size. According to the style of performance, boxes for receiving correspondence can be divided into three main types.

Option #1 - traditional box

The box for receiving correspondence is most often placed near the main entrance to the site, hanging on the wall of the house, a gate or a fence. Originally designed exterior element will always attract the attention of passers-by and guests.

The mailboxes familiar to many of us, which have become widespread in the post-Soviet space, are vertically placed boxes with an equipped slot for letters and newspapers.

Option # 2 - in the English manner

The mailbox, made in the form of a cabinet-table, is installed directly on the ground, placing it a few steps before the main entrance.

Functional structures, outwardly resembling a house in miniature, are most often made of durable metal, or laid out of brick

Option #3 - American style box

Install such boxes on a separate support, which is a metal or wooden rod, or a decorative figure. Boxes are most often equipped with a special flag, which is raised by the owner if there are letters in the box that the postman must pick up and send himself.

The design of boxes for receiving letters and magazines of the American type is of the same type - horizontally placed containers with a semicircular roof and side doors. But their decoration is often amazing

As a basis for creating boxes, decorated in an unusual design solution, all kinds of household items

When planning the manufacture of a functional structure with their own hands, each owner wants it to last more than one season, without losing its attractiveness for as long as possible. Therefore, when creating a durable letter box, you should follow a number of basic recommendations:

  • Above the slot for lowering correspondence, it is desirable to equip a visor that will protect the contents of the container from falling rain and snow.
  • The door for extracting letters can be placed both on the front panel and in the bottom wall of the structure. In the first arrangement, it is important to accurately calculate the dimensions of the opening and the door in order to prevent the formation of cracks through which moisture will enter. When planning to place the door in the bottom wall, it is better to make this entire part of the box folding.
  • When building a wooden box, it is better to fasten all structural elements using corners. This will increase the strength of the structure and greatly facilitate repairs in the future.
  • Do not forget to provide a lock, the installation of which will prevent possible attacks on correspondence by thieves.

Some craftsmen equip their mailboxes the simplest system alarms. It is powered by contact plates, which can be taken from an old magnetic relay or telephone switch.

To equip the mailbox with an alarm system, an additional bottom must be made in the container, which can be cut out of plywood or plastic, and then placed on springs.

The additional bottom is placed in such a way that the bottom edge is attached directly to the box, and the top edge rests on springs, between which contacts are placed that respond to the box being filled with correspondence.

As soon as the contacts close, the light bulb connected to them by wires, which is already installed in the house, lights up and thereby signals the arrival of new correspondence.

Master class # 1: a designer box made of cardboard

A chic mailbox, decorated with elegant lace and resembling a dollhouse in appearance, can act as a bright accent in the exterior of a country house.

To make such a cute "house" we need:

  • Cardboard for modeling (4 mm thick);
  • Drawer lock;
  • Construction glue PVA (or hot with a thermal gun);
  • Paper tape and a utility knife.

We will decorate the box with decoupage napkins, as well as acrylic paints in white, black and silver.

We apply the template to a sheet of cardboard, transfer the dimensions of all the details of the structure, and then cut them out with a knife

When making a window, it is important not to cut the cardboard to the end, this will prevent gaps. It is advisable to fix the fold points with paper tape

We glue all the details of the box with hot glue or building PVA, leave the box to dry completely

The box is ready, let's start decorating.

For creating visual effect past the outer surface of the box with napkins, and then cover it with black and white paint, trimming the corners with a silvery tint

It remains only to install a miniature lock on the door, stick the selected decoupage napkins and decorate the roof with a lace ribbon

The original designer box, made by hand, will become a memorable business card of any suburban area.

Workshop # 2: plywood mailbox option

In addition to the cardboard version, you can make something stronger. For example, a wooden box.

A nice wooden mailbox will fit perfectly into the country landscape: outwardly resembling a makeshift bird house, it will be an appropriate addition to the exterior

To make such a mailbox, you will need materials:

  • Pine timber 1000x75x50 mm;
  • Cut plywood 650x435 mm 9 mm thick;
  • Sheet of thin plywood measuring 650x650 mm;
  • Piano hinge 130 mm (stainless steel) and mortise lock.

Of the tools you will need:

  • Electric jigsaw;
  • Glue for woodworking;
  • Nails or screws;
  • Sandpaper.

We cut the wooden beam across into three parts, each 330 mm long. On each of the cuts, we outline the central and transverse lines, maintaining a distance between them of 300 mm. According to the outlined contours, using a pattern, we apply a curve, along which we subsequently cut out a bend. On all three blanks, we carefully clean the edge, and then glue them together.

From sheets of thin plywood, 8 identical blanks measuring 320x160 mm should be obtained. To prevent gaps in the structure, before gluing the parts, you first simply attach the elements to each other and check if they match. We lay the sheets in layers on the concave side of the block, carefully smearing each layer with glue. After the glue has completely dried, the roof can only be carefully sanded and attached to the box using the same glue.

According to the diagram with the indicated dimensions, carefully cut out the rest of the details for the mailbox from plywood sheets.

In the front wall of the box, we cut out an opening for the door and a slot for throwing in correspondence. We nail or fasten the piano hinge to the door, and also cut out the keyhole to equip the lock. Having installed the door, we carefully clean the entire box, and then cover it with a layer of paint or varnish.

Anyone could make a mailbox with their own hands. It is only important to objectively assess your skills and abilities in creating such things and choose a model, the manufacture of which will be within the power of the master. Do-it-yourself mailboxes can be made according to simple circuits, it will work even for beginners. But more complex forms require enough experience and knowledge from the manufacturer.

It will be easiest to make a mailbox from wood or plywood, the main thing is not to forget to soak the parts with an antiseptic.

What is important to consider when starting to create a mailbox

For those who have not yet chosen what the future mailbox will look like, it is important to determine the fundamental parameters before creating it:

  1. What material will it be made from?
  2. What will be its dimensions.
  3. What design to choose for him.

After the choice is made, you can proceed to the drawings, the acquisition of the necessary materials and the creation of the product itself.

Wooden mailbox - manufacturing

For beginners, the easiest way is to make a mailbox according to a very easy scheme from an affordable and easy-to-handle material - wood. The manufacturing process for this type of mailbox is described below.

A homemade wooden mailbox will require the following materials and tools:

  • a wooden beam made of inexpensive wood (pine, for example) with a length of at least 30 cm;
  • dense plywood sheet with good moisture resistance;
  • substances for the protective treatment of wood;
  • self-tapping screws for wooden products;
  • two hinges for the door;
  • door lock and hinge;
  • metal sheet 30 cm long;
  • screwdriver;
  • hacksaw or jigsaw.

From a wooden beam, you need to prepare four guide rails, the thickness of which will be 1 cm, width - 2 cm and length - 30 cm. Then you should make plywood blanks for the walls of the future mailbox. The dimensions of the front and back walls will be 30 cm long and 25 cm wide. Side panels, there should be only two pieces - they will have the following dimensions: length 30 cm, width 6 cm. The dimensions of the top and bottom panels should be 25 cm wide and 6 cm long.

Since all these parts are wooden, even before the mailbox is assembled, they should be treated with substances that will permanently protect the finished product from rain, snow and insects. This will allow for a very long time to use the future mailbox for a private house.

After all the main parts are ready and processed, you can begin to assemble the product. All four guide rails must be connected to the back wall, bottom and side panels. To do this, it is best to use prepared screws and a screwdriver.

Although there is another option - you can put all the parts on glue, in which case it would be better if you use good wood glue.

The top panel of a wooden mailbox should contain a slot into which the postman can drop letters, newspapers and other correspondence. A skilled craftsman will easily make the desired gap one centimeter wide in the middle. For beginners, there is an easier recipe. The remaining plywood panel, 25 cm long and 6 cm wide, can be cut with a jigsaw (or hacksaw) and made into two panels 25 cm long and 2.5 cm wide. Thus, the master will be able to make a slot 1 cm wide by attaching these two thin panels to the finished frame on top. This simple trick will make it easier to make a homemade mailbox.

Since the slot for the press is located in the upper part of the structure, it is reasonable to provide for strengthening a visor above it, which would protect all newspapers and letters from possible precipitation. Such a protective panel can be made from a metal plate. Here it is important to fit its dimensions well to the size of the mailbox itself, and then attach the metal cornice to the top of the product on the hinges. At the same time, it is important to take into account that the cornice itself does not prevent the postman from throwing mail into the slot.

Lastly, the front wall is fixed, since it will serve as the mailbox door. With its help, the owner will be able to take all correspondence from him. To do this, use prepared loops and a lock. Loops should be small and not bulky. At the same time, it is necessary that they be very durable and ensure the smooth and reliable movement of the door itself. Hinges for a padlock are attached on the opposite side, one on the door and the other on the side panel.

You can improve the finished product by installing an alarm that will notify the owners of the receipt of mail. To do this, you need to make another lower plywood bar and attach it below, forming a double bottom. The second plywood is attached to the springs. Contact plates from the telephone switch should be placed between these springs. Connecting wires from the box must be laid into the house to the battery and the lamp, the latter will light up every time the correspondence gets inside. This simple mechanism will always notify hosts about the arrival of mail.

Models of homemade mailboxes

Mailboxes come in a variety of shapes and designs. These products can differ in form and cost, they are made from various materials, and the design can be limited only by the imagination and skill of the one who creates them.

Wooden mailbox. This is a very simple and affordable version of the mailbox. Depending on the skills of the master, such boxes can be very simple in execution, or they can be carved and show the pinnacle of craftsmanship if they are made by professionals who have been working with wood for a long time.

You can build a simple mailbox from a plastic bottle and two metal staples.

Mailbox from a plastic bottle. This is a small and compact option, large packages of correspondence will not fit here, but it will always look original. Moreover, it is very easy to make such mailboxes from a plastic bottle with your own hands. To do this, a plastic container is placed in a metal or plastic pipe of the appropriate size and fixed in a place accessible to the postman.

Metal mailbox. To make such a device, you need to be able to work with metal, use more complex tools - a drill, welding, grinder, etc. However, such a box will last a long time, so the time and effort spent on it is worth it.

Plexiglas or plastic mailbox. It is not always easy to make it, because plastic parts will have to be fastened with glue or sealant. Here it is important to choose a good substance for gluing, otherwise the master will have to fiddle with such a model for a long time.

Clock mailbox. For this option, you need an old cuckoo clock. The clock mechanism should be disassembled and the front part former watches fasten to a wooden box. In this case, the hole from which the cuckoo used to jump out must coincide with the hole in the wooden base box. This will be the slot into which the postman will be able to lower the correspondence. At the same time, do not forget about the door through which the owners can take the press and letters.

Timber mailbox. First of all, you need to choose a good and thick log. Wood should be cut out of it and a pre-prepared metal box should be inserted into the resulting hole. The mail door should be on the front of the box.

The door itself can be trimmed with bark so that it does not “fall out” of the overall design of the mailbox.

Mail box installation

After the wooden mailbox is ready, it still needs to be installed in a place that will be convenient and accessible for both the postman and the owners waiting for mail. There are different options for installing mailboxes, they can be attached to different surfaces:

  • to the fence - the product is attached to the clamps;
  • to the wall of the house - the product is attached to dowels or anchors (their size depends on the wall itself);
  • to another hard surface, for example, to a wooden or metal gate;
  • to a separate rack (US mount).

Here is such a simple recipe that will help you with the question of how to make a mailbox easily and quickly, using simple and affordable tools and materials.

A mailbox is an essential part of any home. How to make a mailbox yourself, unique in design and having the function of notifying you of the arrival of mail, is described in this article.

If you have a house, then you have your own address, to which you receive postal items- press, letters and other notices. To receive correspondence, you can buy a mailbox in any appropriate store and hang it on the front door. Such a solution, in addition to high cost, and high-quality mailboxes are quite expensive, it is also bad that the ready-made options are faceless and, accordingly, are not able to decorate your home. We will tell you how you can make a unique mailbox with two undeniable advantages before purchased:

  • located on the inside of the fence, that is, being on the territory of a personal plot, and having a decorative look, it will serve as a decoration for the garden;
  • the mailbox is equipped with an autonomous mechanical signaling of mail receipt, that is, the box device will have a simple, reliable and trouble-free mechanism that works when mail arrives, thereby informing the owner that the mail has arrived.

Such a mailbox, in the end, will cost you less than a purchased one, and you can make it yourself in one day.

So let's get started.

Tools and materials

To make a mailbox house, we need:

  1. Circular saw or hand saw.
  2. Drill or screwdriver.
  3. Sheet metal or any other sheet material. A cut tin can is fine.
  4. Lumber trimmings.
  5. Wooden skewers. We will use them as dowels.

Manufacturing instructions

1. We start with the manufacture of the base platform. To do this, use a rectangular piece of plywood 20 mm thick. We cut out a rectangle according to the dimensions indicated in the photo, process it with sandpaper and cover it with soil.

2. We cover the edges with decorative facings.

4. After painting the platform to the bottom with the help of self-tapping screws, we fix the stand and the slope, which are made of a profile pipe.

5. We fix the platform at the installation site of the mailbox.

6. From the outside of the fence we make a damper. We cut a vertical hole in the profiled sheet of the fence. From a metal plate with a thickness of 1.5 mm we make linings for the slot and the damper itself. We fix the damper with a self-tapping screw in its upper part to the plates on the slot. The shutter moves to the left or right, thereby opening the entrance to the slot through which the mail enters.

7. Let's start manufacturing the details of the mailbox.

8. We assemble the frame. Details in the places of gluing are additionally fixed with wooden dowels.

9. We fix the left side wall to the frame and start making the signaling device. It consists of two metal plates interconnected by a metal axis and located relative to each other in perpendicular planes. We fix the plates to the axis with metal rivets. On the plate, which will be outside the mailbox, we apply a thematic drawing (postman), cut it out along the contour of the drawing with metal scissors and paint it with acrylic paints. The second plate should cover the inlet from the inside of the box. Thus, the empty box is made ready by lifting the right plate. When mail is placed in the box, the plate falls down, lifting the left plate with the postman painted on it. It is his appearance that signals the presence of mail.

10. The axis of the signaling device is fixed with the help of corner metal loops to the platform with self-tapping screws.

11. We fix the front wall and insert the thematic drawing into the opening of the future window.

12. We make window frame parts. Before installing the frame, insert glass into the opening.

13. Glue the right side wall. In the center of the wall we make an imitation of a door and decorative cashing from fiberboard. We also make a back wall with a vertical slot from fiberboard, into which mail will enter the mailbox.

14. We decorate the outer corners of the house and the lower part with wooden corners.

15. Let's start making the roof. We glue the frame of the base of the roof.

16. Glue a piece of fiberboard to the bottom. Next, glue two pairs of rafters onto the frame. All connections must be additionally fixed with dowels.

17. We attach the roof frame to the house with the help of small eyelets, since the roof will act as a mailbox cover.

18. We make the gables of the roof from fiberboard and glue the ebb from the front side.

19. On the rafters we attach a rough roof from scraps of boards or lining.

20. On the rough roof, with the help of small nails, we fix the tiles cut out of tin.

21. After fixing the tiles, we make a ridge and wind slats.

22. Making a porch.

23. We install the structure in place. The unique mailbox is ready.

Evgeny Dubinin, rmnt.ru (based on material from Valley user)

There are many options for making a box from improvised materials. They differ in shape and design, as well as the material used to build them, and the price. Many models can be easily created with your own hands, using fairly cheap materials. Some are made with the help of certain skills that require great effort and considerable expense.

What types exist?

When choosing a design, first of all, you should pay special attention to the general style of the house, the estimated capacity, as well as the location of the box. It is very important that the owners initially decide whether it will be used only for its intended purpose or whether it will have to perform additional decorative functions.

The style of the product can be very diverse. The most commonly seen types are:

  • standard or traditional;
  • English;
  • American;
  • original.

Traditional mailboxes with a special slot for placing letters, newspapers and other correspondence are the most common in post-Soviet countries and can be made from any material.

Today, traditional designs are increasingly being decorated, thereby giving them a more unique and interesting look. Standard boxes are most often installed on gates or fences. They are very easy to make and use in the future.

For example, an American mailbox: they are all similar in structure, but as far as decor is concerned, each of them has no equal.

Each type has a special flag that, when raised, indicates the presence of a letter in it, which must be sent as soon as possible. Postmen in America take out such letters and mail them themselves. In post-Soviet countries, you can also work according to this scheme, but for this you need to agree in advance on this service with the postman.

Such structures are mainly installed on some kind of separate support made of any material: wood, metal or others.

Traditional drawer options are more spacious than American ones. Based on this, before deciding to make an American-style box, it is necessary to know exactly the amount of correspondence received.

As for the English mailboxes, they are presented in the form of a kind of bollard made of brick or any other durable material. It is customary to install them on the ground just a few meters from the threshold of the house or the entrance to the territory of your site. Outwardly, they resemble a small house, they are very roomy, and their strength cannot but surprise.

If we talk about the original types, then they include all models that have a very interesting and attractive design solution. Even various household items can be used in such a way that it will be impossible to look away.

For the manufacture of a box of any type and type, you can use brick, plastic, wood, metal. If you make it yourself, then it is best to give preference to a wooden or plastic variation, the construction of which does not take much time. If you decide to make a box of metal, then you need to resort to the use of additional tools, to have welding skills.

The most durable and very reliable boxes are considered to be made on the basis of brick or metal, in other words - for the press, English style.

A beautiful mailbox, reliable and very durable, you can make it yourself. There are several main recommendations that are responsible for the quality of the product:

  1. If the product is made of wood, then each element of the future design is best fastened with special corners, which will give the mailbox additional strength, and in case of urgent need, it will facilitate repair work.
  2. In the event that the slot intended for receiving correspondence is located on top, a special protective visor should be made to prevent precipitation from entering the box.
  3. In order to retrieve letters, the door is best done at the bottom. It would be nice if the whole Bottom part designs.
  4. If the mail release door is located on the front of the structure, all necessary dimensions must be calculated accurately, as well as adjusting the main parts to prevent gaps.
  5. So that no one can extract your correspondence except you, especially during your absence, you need to install a lock.
  6. To prevent all kinds of flyers and flyers from being thrown into your mailbox, install a separate wooden cabinet next to it, designed for this information.

Instructions for making a wooden or plywood box

In order to make a box of wood, you will need to stock up on the following materials:

  • wooden sheet (veneer or plywood) - 65 * 65 cm;
  • plywood 0.9 cm thick - 65 * 43.5 cm;
  • special pine timber - 100 * 0.75 * 0.5 cm;
  • specially prepared piano loop - 13 cm;
  • sandpaper for leveling irregularities;
  • mortise lock;
  • screws;
  • glue for woodworking;
  • colloidal silica;
  • epoxy adhesive, consisting of 2 components.

First of all, the existing pine beam will need to be cut into 3 equal pieces - 33 cm. On one of the bars, you will need to draw 1 main and 2 transverse lines, with a distance of 30 cm. A smooth curved line is drawn using a pattern. Using a hacksaw, the necessary bend is cut out, and the edge is thoroughly cleaned. Thus, the 2 remaining bars should be processed.

Then they need to be glued together well. Plywood measuring 0.9 cm will need to be cut into pieces.

Version of the wooden mailbox

8 sheets of 32 * 16 cm in size are cut out of thin plywood or veneer. After that, all the pieces are carefully glued together. It is important that no gaps form during gluing.

As soon as the glue dries, the already finished cover will need to be properly sanded, as well as adjusted to the required dimensions.

In order for correspondence to be placed in the mailbox, a special opening will need to be cut out on the front wall with a hacksaw. It will be necessary to make the necessary opening for the door.

After that, a piano hinge is cut out across the entire width of the existing door, after which it is attached to the base with screws.

In the same door, it is necessary to determine the place for embedding the lock, then cut the keyhole and install it.

After that, a lid is attached to the top. Then the door is installed and the finished box is polished with sandpaper.

If there is a desire, then the design can be decorated with all sorts of colors or simply varnished.

A wooden mailbox is very easy to make. The main thing is the desire and compliance with all the rules in the manufacturing process.

Instructions for creating an original mailbox

Mailboxes, to which an individual design approach was made, will look very interesting and very unusual on your site. A mailbox can be safely made from unnecessary things in the household and the funds at hand.

So, a plastic bottle mailbox is perfect for those who receive a small amount of press. A huge plus is that its creation and installation will not take much time, money and special efforts.

A beautiful mailbox can be made from an old cuckoo clock. To do this, you will only need to disassemble this watch, and attach the front side to an ordinary wooden box. The place where the cuckoo once jumped out, the postmen will use to accommodate the press.

If you have an old unnecessary system unit from a computer, then make a mailbox out of it. To do this, you only need to gut all the insides of the system unit and place it on some wooden or other sufficiently strong support.

The postal version can also be safely built from cardboard, the main thing is that the material is durable. When creating such a structure, it is necessary to take into account its location.

Installation methods

Most people are interested in installing traditional mailboxes. The most common are the following installation methods:

  1. Fence installation. For this type of installation, you must first make 2 cuts on the back of the box, through which the metal clamps necessary for fastening will be threaded. You need to align by tightening the clamps.
  2. Installation on any hard surface. Very often you can see that mailboxes are installed on metal or wooden gates. In order to make such an installation, it is necessary to prepare in advance a number of holes not only on the back of the box itself, but also on the gate. The finished product should be fastened with nuts and bolts.
  3. Wall mounting. In order to produce it, 2 holes should be made, both on the product itself and on the wall. Attach the structure to the dowels.

Having a great desire and a certain amount of free time, each owner can easily make a mailbox with his own hand, without resorting to the help of professionals.

Country real estate or a private house may have its own address. Therefore, people living here can receive letters, newspapers and other necessary correspondence. So that it does not scatter all over the site, is not spoiled by snow or rain, you need to equip a mailbox. There are many options for such structures today.

Creating mailboxes with your own hands, you can show creativity. In this case, such a product will be original and interesting. There are many simple and more complex options for mailboxes. Even without much experience in the use of hand tools, you can create such designs yourself.

Design process

To create a functional and beautiful mailbox with your own hands, you must first design the design itself. First of all, you should consider its dimensions. The correspondence that the owner of a private house will receive can be of different sizes. It doesn't have to be just letters. You may need to place magazines, newspapers, or even books in the mailbox. In this case inner space products must provide this capability.

Next, you should decide on the type of material and style of the box itself. In this case, you can show imagination. There are many options that allow you to create an original and beautiful product. The design style should be selected in accordance with appearance the cottage or house itself, as well as with the landscape design of the site.

When learning how to make a mailbox, you should also consider your abilities and skills. Some materials will be easier to work with, while others will require the use of a special tool.

Style

Mailboxes for a private house can be made in different styles. Today, the most popular are traditional, American, English varieties of design. There are also original developments.

Traditional mailboxes look like an oblong box, which has a slot for correspondence. They are made from various materials. This is a simple, convenient option. Such a box can be installed on a gate or fence. To give an aesthetic appearance, such products are decorated with various additional details, decorated in accordance with the taste preferences of the owners.

The American design style involves applying the same design to all drawers. They differ only in color. Correspondence is inside such a box in a horizontal position. Similar products are installed on a special support.

The English mailbox has the form of a pedestal-table. It is made of steel and is installed in front of the entrance to the site directly on the ground. It is a strong, durable construction.

Original developments involve the use of materials such as plastic or other polymers. In this direction, creative imagination has no limits.

Material

Exists great amount options for creating a mailbox. For this, the most different materials. Metal mailboxes are considered the most reliable. However, not every master has experience working with such material. In order for the design to be reliable, it is necessary to be able to work with a welding machine. If you wish, you can do without it. In this case, metal sheets are pulled together with rivets or even bolts with nuts.

Wood is another popular option. It does not require the use of complex tools. At the same time, various decorative elements for the mailbox can be created from wood. With proper processing of this material, high reliability and durability of the product can be achieved.

One of the most simple options is the creation of a structure made of polymeric materials. For example, it could be a mailbox made from a plastic bottle. This type of mailbox is easy to create. However, these are the most short-lived types of structures.

What needs to be foreseen?

In addition to the fact that the box must be durable, beautiful and in harmony with the overall design of the house and yard, it must be reliable. To do this, several recommendations must be taken into account. Whatever material is chosen for the manufacture of the box, all the subtleties of working with it should be taken into account. For example, when creating a wooden structure, it is necessary to fasten the boards with the help of corners.

It is important that water or snow cannot get inside. If the letter slot is on top, you need to install a visor above it.

Purchase a secure mailbox lock. It can be hinged or internal. When choosing, it is better to give preference to products from trusted manufacturers.

The drawer door should be located at the bottom of the structure. If it is on its front side, it is necessary to ensure its snug fit to the sashes. Otherwise, water can get inside in heavy rain.

When creating mailboxes with your own hands, you should consider a few tips for the design of such products. In the design process, one should take into account what kind of fence the house has, the style of the facade design, and the features of landscape design.

If the country cottage is far from big city, you can give preference to country or Provence style when designing a product. The best material in this case would be wood.

If the fence is made of forged elements, a metal mailbox would be the best option. It must be in harmony with the fence. When designing a product, you can apply the same motifs as for a fence.

Stone fence involves the use of quality materials. In this case, the plastic will most likely look out of place. It is better to give preference to metal.

Making a wooden box

A wooden mailbox will look beautiful and original. To create it, you will need to prepare sheets of plywood or veneer, the length and width of which is 63 cm. Their thickness must be at least 1 cm. You also need a wooden beam with dimensions of 100 x 7.5 x 5 cm. It is necessary to prepare a stainless steel loop (12 cm) and a castle.

You will also need sandpaper, screws, staples, wood glue, colloidal silica.

The beam is sawn into 3 identical parts. On one of them, draw 3 lines. One of them will run in the center, and the other 2 - across. The distance between them should be at least 30 cm. A smooth curve is drawn. It is cut and cleaned. On the remaining segments of the beam, the same procedure is performed. All elements are glued.

8 pieces of 32 x 16 cm are cut out of veneer. The blanks are inserted into the concave section of the block and processed with epoxy glue. The first layer is laid on the beam paper, and then sheets of veneer. The glue will dry, after which the cover is polished.

A slot for letters and newspapers is cut out in the front wall, as well as an opening for the door. It is fixed with screws. The lock is installed. The lid is fixed to the box with silica glue. The finished structure must be varnished and, if desired, paint.
