Paint tool SAI is a very easy to learn and use program. It does not take up much space on the computer, but gives a lot of tools and additional features for those who like to create bitmaps. Even a “teapot” can master SAI. The program is much lighter than Photoshop. All you need is the desire to draw.

How to draw in Paint tool SAI - basic tools

Those who first decided to get creative and do not know the English names of the instruments cannot skip this point. Be sure to learn the names of the tools so that you understand what you should use when drawing in SAI.

Tool (tool) :

  • Pen (Pen);
  • Airbrush (Airbrush);
  • Brush (Brush);
  • Watercolor (Watercolor);
  • Eraser (Eraser);
  • Marker
  • Eraser (Eraser);
  • Binary pen (Binary);
  • Fill (Bucket).

How to draw in Paint tool SAI - the beginning

First, install the program on your computer. After running it, click on "File" - "New". Set the size of the canvas (your work surface where you will draw), give your drawing a title and click “Ok”. You will see a sheet of white "paper" - a canvas. To understand the principle of the Sai program, you do not need to take on all the tools. As a beginner, you will need the Pen tool and the Eraser tool to erase your mistakes.

How to draw in Paint tool SAI - more about the Pen tool

To understand the principle of drawing with this tool, imagine that you are drawing with a pencil on paper. You choose the color of the pencil, its thickness. If you press harder on the pencil, you will get a thick line, if you press lightly - a barely noticeable line. In Sai on the panel on the left you choose the color of the Pen tool, at the bottom you can adjust its size and density.

How to draw in Paint tool SAI - the better to draw

So, you understand where to start, and this is already half the battle. Is it possible to draw with the mouse in Sai? You can, but the drawing will not be as smooth and realistic. It is difficult to draw a long smooth line with the mouse. If you are working on a large drawing, then it is better to use special drawing tablets. In the picture you can see what can be drawn using only the Pen and Eraser tool. Playing with the density tool helps in creating shadows and highlights in the drawing. With other tools, the principle of operation will be the same. The line type will be different. The Brush brush draws lines that are blurry at the edges, with Binary the line itself turns out to be hard, Marker gives the effect a clear and beautiful line. Try to compare these tools yourself, so you will understand what you have to work with.

How to draw in Paint tool SAI - layers

Drawing in Sai has its own little “difficulties”. On the right side of the panel you will see a panel where your layers will be lined up one by one. Why do you need it? If you draw everything on one layer, then you will no longer be able to freely change your image. If you are drawing, for example, a smiley face, then try drawing a yellow body on one layer, eyes on another layer, a smile on a third. What will it give you? You want to make fun sad emoticon. You will not need to erase the lips with an eraser, sketch the body again with yellow. You simply turn off the layer you don't need (the eye symbol opposite the layer), create a new one and draw a smile. To make it clearer, imagine that you are cutting out this smiley from paper and putting it together. The first layer of paper is your body, the second layer is black eyes, the third is a smile. Then you put your smile aside and put your lips in a bow, etc. Now imagine that you glued all the pieces with glue (draw a smiley face on one layer in Sai). What do you have to do to change the shape of your smile?

Sai is a pleasure to work with. This program is not overloaded with tools. There is everything you need, which allows you to create very beautiful pictures. At first, just study the interface, get used to it, click on each window. You will definitely love this program!

Lesson author: Miyok is a wonderful girl, to whom we are all very grateful for the translations into Russian of such cartoons as Ever After High. Miyok also recorded several video lessons on SAI program paint tool. If you always wanted to learn how to draw in AIS, but you didn't know where to start, then this lesson will help you. As well as all subsequent ones, which we will publish a little later.
In this lesson you will get acquainted with the basics of working in AIS, as well as the basic brushes.
As we know, many do not have blender brushes in the starter kit, so we found a file with similar brushes for you.

Download brush blender for Paint Tool SAI

Now another very important point, which may be useful to you in the future - how to install new brushes in Paint Tool SAI.

To install brushes, find the folder with installed program, most often it is located at: c:\Program files\Paint Tool SAI
How to add brushes to the Paint Tool Sai:

1. Copy the files from the blotmap (shape brush) and elemap (shape brush) folders and paste them into the corresponding folders in your Sai.

2. Copy files from toolnrm (tools) to your sai toolnrm folder. Files from this folder should be renamed depending on your own tools (meaning numbering) (for example, if the name of the last tool is 09.ini, then new ones should be named starting from 10: 10.ini, 11.ini, 12 .ini and so on).

3. If the new textures and\or blotmaps\elemaps have the same names as the ones you already have, you need to rename the files and add them to your sai appropriate folders, and make changes to those ini files from the toolnrm folder, applies to those textures\blotmaps\elemaps. Open the INI file, find the fields "brfnam" and "texnam" and enter your new filenames there without the extension.

EXAMPLE:
brfnam=Your_new_brush_form_name
texnam=Your_new_texture_name

4. Edit brushform.conf (the notepad that contains all the brush names) to add the names of the files you just copied.

If you don't change any filename, add this to the list:

2, elemap\Bristle.bmp
2, elemap\Bristle2.bmp
1, blotmap\spread.bmp
1, blotmap\Spread & Noise.bmp

If you have changed some file names (see point 3), what follows, instead of adding new file names, as per the scheme:

1, blotmap\Your_new_blotmap_name.bmp
2, elemap\Your_new_elemap_name.bmp

It's important to keep it all together: all filenames and paths must match! This means that if you change something, you must make sure that you change every name related to the brush/texture itself.

Hello! Today we will try to understand graphics editor Paint Tool S.A.I. So what is it? SAI or Paint Tool SAI is a program designed for digital drawing in the environment Microsoft Windows, developed by the Japanese company SYSTEMAX. Lots of digital works, which can now be seen on the Internet, were created using this program.

Why is this program so popular with artists? It has a number of advantages:

  • The first advantage is the ability of the editor to create large files, which is important for getting good quality finished work.
  • Ability to work with a graphics tablet. (A graphics tablet is a device for entering freehand drawings directly into a computer. It consists of a pen and a flat tablet that is sensitive to pressure or proximity to the pen.)
  • Supports many file types. Such as:
  1. sai is the program's own file type;
  2. jpg - is used mainly for image compression, I do not advise saving images in it, quality loss is guaranteed;
  3. bmp - large files;
  4. png is the best way to save your work.

And some others.

  • Another plus that cannot be overlooked is the small weight of the program with a fairly fast launch.

And so, we open the Paint Tool SAI, now we will deal with the controls superficially. Opening the editor, we see this:

In the left upper corner find the button "File" -> "New"

The following window appears:

We are asked to choose the width and height of the canvas. The canvas format depends on what you are going to draw. I usually choose 3000x3000 for a square canvas, 4000x7000 for a vertical painting and 7000x4000 for a horizontal one. But this is very approximate and almost always changes. The OK button means that you have defined the properties of the canvas and are ready to create it.

After creating the canvas, we have an active settings menu. We will talk about it now.

  1. In the upper left corner we have a navigator, a navigator is present in any editor. It includes such buttons as: + and - with which you can zoom in or out of the canvas. Rotation buttons left and right, allowing you to change the angle of the canvas in one direction or another. The "squares" on the right side of the navigator return the canvas to its original form.
  2. We look below and notice the layer settings and the window where all your layers are located. What are LAYERS and how to use them I will tell later.
  3. To the right of the navigator is the palette. There are several types of palettes in SAI, you can choose a palette that is convenient for you by clicking on one of them. Click on the open palette button to hide it.
  4. Under the palette are tools, which we will also analyze later.
  5. Below the tools are the tool settings.

What are layers? Where to begin?

There are two types of layers in SAI: RASTER and VECTOR. We will now examine each of them separately.

Both types of layers have some of the same features:

  • Layers can be divided into folders (groups). For creating new group click on the "folder" icon on the same layer control panel. A folder is a very handy feature that helps you not get confused in different layers, which are often very numerous.
  • The second common function is to clear the layer. The clear layer button looks like a sheet of paper with a large eraser. This button is located under the folder button. Clicking on it will remove all content from the selected raster or vector layer. This feature is convenient because you do not have to erase something for a long time.
  • Each layer can be made visible or disabled by clicking on the eye icon on the layer itself.
  • Opacity is adjusted for both layers using the slider in the layer control menu.
  • Also, both types of layers can be simply deleted by clicking on the trash can icon on the same panel.

To create a raster layer, click on the icon with clean slate. A raster layer can be used for both contouring and painting.

A raster layer includes several types of brushes:

  1. A pen.
  2. Spray can.
  3. Brush.
  4. Watercolor.
  5. Marker.
  6. Eraser.
  7. Fill.

Each brush has different properties:

Here you can see how the main brushes of the raster layer behave, the brush settings are initial, I did not change them. (No. 6 - eraser, not shown in the picture).

Consider how a brush can change using the example of a regular pen.

In the brush settings, you can choose the type of edge. Rounded = softer, squared = sharper.

You can also change the size, minimum click size and density.

  • The larger the brush size, the correspondingly larger brush.
  • The larger the percentage of the minimum size, the less the brush reacts to pressure in terms of thickness.
  • The density of the brush can be replaced by the word transparency, i.e. the smaller it is, the weaker the brush mark will be.

A couple of examples of brush settings:

After we've dealt with the raster layer, let's talk about the VECTOR layer.

To create a vector layer, click on the icon with the image of a sheet and an ink pen - the icon is located on the same layer control panel. Vector layer used to create a neat outline, line. A number of vector layer tools allow you to make a neat path, even if you draw with the mouse.

Vector includes a number of tools such as:

  1. A pen.
  2. Curve.
  3. Line.
  4. Eraser.
  5. Parameter.
  6. Editor.
  7. Pressure.
  8. Color.

The curve tool is a line that follows the cursor. Each click creates a new point on which the line is fixed. When creating a subsequent point, the line between them is automatically rounded. Each of the points can then be edited (moved, dragged) using the "editor" tool.

For straight lines, there is a "line" tool that acts like a "curve", but without rounding the gaps.

An unlimited number of points can be created on each type of line.

Lines also have a minimum size, but this is created using the pressure tool. To change the size of the line in some place, you need to hold the point in this place with "pressure" and move the cursor up or down.

An example of using "pressure" on a regular curve:

  • With the color tool, you can change the color of an already finished line by simply clicking on it with the tool.
  • "Parameter" allows you to change the size and transparency of the finished line as well.

Now you can distinguish between raster and vector layers, as well as use them a little.

When the work is finished, the layers can be merged, this is done like this:

We are looking for the section "LAYER" at the very top -\u003e Merge with the layer below. You can also merge all layers or merge visible ones.

  • "File" -> Save As.
  • We select the “Desktop” save folder, name the file in “File Name”, the file type is already familiar to us PNG.

For today, our lesson can be completed, thanks to those who read it, I hope this lesson was useful to someone.

She is very much loved by teenagers and manga artists.

SAI graphics editor

The program offers a greater variety of tools for creating a picture, which for the most part can be further configured. In addition, "AI" has some important effects and filters that help the artist to achieve greater expressiveness in the drawing.

How to draw in SAI? Using raster or vector drawing tools. They help to make a complete sketch of a manga character without resorting to other image processing programs.

How to draw in SAI?

Allows the user to open multiple documents at the same time. Using the sliders on the navigator or hotkeys that are configured on the keyboard, the canvas can be scaled, rotated and distorted. It is also possible to keep several different areas of the same drawing open. A palette or panel is saved between sessions, and colors can be saved in a swatch panel.

Layers

How to draw in "AI" using several layers?

On the canvas, you can use individual layers. It is possible to group them and change the opacity masks. In addition, levels can be collected on the bottom layer and masked, allowing you to apply highlighting and shading to an area without having to create new masks for additional levels.

Drawing tools

How to draw in "Sai" anime? Using raster and vector tools.

The program implements a variety of raster tools. For example, "Watercolor", "Marker" and "Sprayer". Each of them can be easily customized as well as stored in an empty slot in the application's interface.

How to draw in SAI with a mouse? Here, vector tools are in a hurry to help the user. With the "Pen" you can easily draw in the program even in the absence of Vector tools, just like raster tools, can be easily configured and saved. Also, if you are drawing graphics tablet, they can be made pressure sensitive.

A very convenient tool of the program is "Fill" at the raster level: it works very correctly, filling without gaps and gaps.

Selection and transformation tools

"Rectangular Selection", "Magic Wand" and "Lasso" are the selection tools in AIS. There is also a selection like a brush that can be customized for painting. can be adjusted for smoothing.

How to draw in SAI? The task is facilitated full set conversion tools. They can work on the selected area. The range of tasks includes moving an object, changing its size, free transformation and rotation. It is possible to create a series of changes, and then apply it immediately to the selected object.

Artists will also need a button with top panel"Mirror Image", which allows you to flip the art in one click, and then return it to its original position without changing its orientation.

Stages of creating art in "SAI"

The first stage in the creation of any work - not only with the help of computer graphics is the creation of an initial sketch or sketch. Remember that it is only an assistant, and not a rule that must be strictly followed. Usually the sketch is done in blue or red, and when completed, the color of the layer is changed to black.

The second stage is Under the sketch layer, a new layer is created, which will be the background. If the sketch is made in dark colors, the background should be light, and vice versa, the background will be dark if the sketch is drawn with light colors.

The third stage is coloring. Colors are applied using the Pen and Eraser tools on a new layer.

The fourth stage is the creation of shadows. There are no clear rules and restrictions. Shadows can be created on existing layers or create new ones for them. The Airbrush tool will be useful - it will help blur the edges of the shadow.

Unimplemented features

Functions such as "Text", "Gradient" and "Shapes", which are inherent in most programs for working with graphics, remained unrealized in "AIS". Basic Functions programs are focused on creating art and painting over it, leaving the final stage of creating a drawing to other applications.

There is also no functionality for printing, however, documents can be exported to many popular formats, in addition to their own * .sai.

Since the program does not focus on editing finished pictures, the only adjustments are "Hue / Saturation" and "Brightness / Contrast". There is no way to change channels, layers, etc.

For more detailed editing, users are encouraged to use another program, but it should be remembered that upon returning to the native format of the AIS program, image properties can be greatly changed.

Many people work with Photoshop to create graphic files. Photoshop is really universal, but still its more common use is not for simple drawing, but for working with visualization.

If you like to draw anime characters or want to start doing it, then good choice will enjoy Paint Tool Sai. It's accessible to everyone graphics application, focused on drawing primarily in the LineArt style. Anime and manga are drawn in this style, so using the Sai Paint Tool application has gained immense popularity among anime fans.

How to use Paint Tool Sai

Let's start with the fact that it is intended for tablet use, but it works much faster than the Photoshop described above, which you will see as soon as you take the first steps.

So, learning to work with Paint Tool Sai:

  • Of course, you should start by installing the program. To do this, go to the official website of Paint Tool Sai (http://www.systemax.jp/en/sai/ is suitable for English) and download it to your computer or tablet.
  • Learn how to use the Paint Tool Sai conveniently from a finished sketch. Therefore, first either draw and scan a sketch, or find a suitable graphic file on the Internet. Then open it in Paint editor Tool Sai.
  • Open a new layer. The buttons to do this in the program can be found in the middle of the right menu. For convenience, we will again focus on English language. We find “Layer” (Layer), then select “New Layer” (New layer) there.
  • Then open the layer for LineArt - first there in the same “Layer”, and then select “New Linework Layer”.
  • Everything you have done should be displayed on the screen: Layer 1- this will be the original drawing, Layer 2- the second layer that you opened, and Linework1— Layer for LineArt.
  • Using the Paint Tool Sai graphics tools is no more difficult than using Abobe Photoshop.
  • As in Photoshop, the tools will greatly facilitate your work, say, Airbrush (airbrush) will make it easy to draw an oval.

    • Let's try to circle the original image. For this, the Curve tool is used - we outline either the entire sketch, or what we consider necessary. If you want the sketch not to interfere, you can turn it off periodically - clicking on the eye icon, which is easy to find on the layers panel, will help.
    • If the line came out in something different than you need, just click "Edit" and correct it to the desired option. You can also correct sketch defects in the Paint Tool Sai - by changing the thickness of the lines, correct all inaccuracies.

  • For coloring, use the Magic Wand tool (in difficult cases, use the Sel Pen as an alternative).
  • First of all, it will be convenient to color the most significant parts of the picture. After that, go to the bottom layer and paint all the small details. Then, for beauty and final touches, go back to the line layer and outline the shadow lines. Then finish the highlights and paint the shadows.

The above instructions are enough to start using Paint program Tool Sai. More detailed studies of drawing techniques and the capabilities of individual tools are easy to master in the future as needed.
