When working in Photoshop, a sign appears " boot disk full.." or "insufficient memory..."
What to do?

I received this question from a member of our community.
I didn't have this problem, but I decided to look into it. What could be causing this and how to get rid of it?
I describe it as I understand it, perhaps in some ways I will turn out to be not quite right.

Allocating RAM for Photoshop

RAM - RANDOM MEMORY. Simply put, the RAM of a computer or other device (RAM). Serves for entering data into temporary memory. When you restart your computer, the content random access memory is not saved.

Photoshop displays the volume available memory and ideal memory range required for its operation (percentage of total available memory).
The value "Busy for Photoshop" is the default, but if desired, it can be changed to about 75%

Assignment of working disks

If the system does not have enough RAM to complete the operation, Photoshop uses its own technology virtual memory also called working disks. A scratch disk is any disk or disk partition with free space. By default, Photoshop uses as the main scratch disk HDD on which is installed operating system, usually Drive C

Photoshop detects and renders all available internal drives on the Settings panel. Using the "Settings" panel, you can enable other scratch disks that will be used after the main disk is full.

For CS2, this can be done: Edit-Settings-External modules and working disks

For CS5 this can be done: Editing-Settings-Performance

Main working disk must have the fastest hard drive; make sure it has plenty of free defragmented space.
To turn on virtual memory(paging file), check the box next to the drive that has free space.
Click the "OK" button.
Restart Photoshop for the changes to take effect.

PS: Virtual Memory will be used only when there is not enough memory on the Main working disk for further work in Photoshop, when you exit Photoshop, it will finish its work, i.e. you can safely use the swap file, no savings to disk will be made.

Free memory

Team " Delete from memory" allows you to free up memory used by: the Undo command, the History palette, and the clipboard.

Select menu Edit - Delete from memory and select the element type or buffer you want to clear. If the element type or buffer is already cleared , it will be dimmed .

Note: Team " Delete from memory" permanently removes from memory operations stored using commands or automatically in the buffer. Deleting from memory impossible to cancel.
For example, if you select Edit-Delete History from memory, all archived states from the History palette will be deleted. Use the "Delete from memory" command when the amount of information in memory is so large that it is noticeable affects performance Photoshop.
I think it will be useful for everyone to know

operating room Windows system 7 is much more voracious than the previous famous XP. And this is reflected, first of all, in random access memory (RAM) - only for system needs, it reserves 1-1.5 GB. And if your computer has 2GB of RAM or less installed, then after running resource-intensive programs, the computer may start to slow down hard. This happens due to the fact that with a shortage of physical RAM, the system starts using a virtual one - the so-called paging file on the hard drive. Indeed, there free space is always much more, but the speed of such memory is much lower, so the overall performance from this unacceptably falls sharply. But there is a need to work with powerful programs on an existing computer. What are the options for resolving the issue?

The most correct and obvious, of course, option is to go to any store or service that repairs laptops (http://ant.sc/remont-noutbukov), buy and install another RAM bar. But this method is not always good, and here it is a few reasons:

  1. - It's a waste of time and money. As of today, 2015, a 4GB kit costs about 30-40 USD.
  2. - It is not always possible to physically increase the amount of memory. This is especially critical for motherboards manufactured before 2005-2007 (approximately), which may simply not be able to address large amounts of memory. In other words - no matter how much you install it, the motherboard will be able to use only a limited amount.
  3. - If you have 32-bit installed Windows version 7 (aka x86), then it can work with a maximum of 3.25 GB of memory, the rest simply will not be seen. Therefore, for correct operation, it may be necessary to reinstall the system to the x64 version - this is also inconvenient.

Among other things, it often happens that RAM is wasted by programs, performing functions that you can do without - freeing up resources for useful tasks.

Internet browsers use the most memory and professional programs graphics, video and audio processing. Classic "gluttons" in terms of graphics - Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw; video - Sony Vegas Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro; audio - Cubase, Logic Pro. Browsers use a lot of RAM if they have more than a dozen tabs open, especially this suffers Google Chrome- on 15 tabs, he can bite off more than 1GB without a twinge of conscience.

But it happens that you need to periodically work with a large number of tabs, do not close them to save memory and reopen each time? And in general, many users have a habit of leaving information found on the Internet on open tabs as a reminder to yourself. And there can be many tabs.

In a sense, it is precisely by closing the tabs that the issue is resolved - but this is not entirely true. Browser extensions come to the rescue, which periodically unload tab data that has not been used for some time from RAM to permanent memory. The time limit can be adjusted to your liking - 1, 5, 10 minutes, half an hour, 2 hours, etc. When accessing an "unloaded" page, its data is loaded again from hard drive into the RAM, and work with it continues in normal mode. At the same time, the entire session with visited pages, cookies and other data is restored completely. True, when accessing the "archived" tab, there is a delay of 2-3 seconds, which is necessary to move data from the HDD to RAM - this is a necessary evil. Once loaded, the tab works at normal speed again until the next time it goes to sleep.

For Chrome, one of the most popular extensions of this kind is The Great Suspender. Similar plugins can be found for Firefox, Opera and other browsers.

Get it for yourself good rule close unused programs, and not minimize (a la "tomorrow will be needed anyway"). This will make the computer easier to work with. Memory-hungry programs can be detected using the Processes tab in the standard Windows Task Manager.

But with powerful programs, you will either have to close resource-intensive browsers and other programs beforehand, or play with their settings (there are plenty of them in professional software), or fork out and install an additional set of RAM. There are a great many models, and it is better to entrust the choice either to a familiar system administrator / IT specialist, or to type in Google "computer repair Kyiv (http://ant.sc/remont-kompyuterov)" and contact the nearest service center, where they will pick up a set of RAM compatible with your computer, and immediately install it. The installation itself takes 5 minutes, it does not require any drivers or settings. For classic use, a system with 4GB of memory is usually enough, for resource-intensive tasks - 6 or 8, this volume is enough to even run several powerful applications simultaneously. More than 8 gigabytes is difficult to score with anything.

The only point: after installing additional memory, you can disable the file Windows paging, because for a certain range of tasks the system will still try to use it, regardless of the free RAM. It can also improve performance.

No matter how fancy your computer is, Photoshop is such a monster that will gobble up all its resources. And sooner or later everyone will have to deal with it.

Recently, I also encountered such a problem as lack of memory when saving animated postcard for WEB in Photoshop.
For this reason, the collage had to be redone three times.
I don’t know what the reason is, but I had to sweat over one collage ...
The search for reasons brought me to the Internet.
The first reason, as it turned out, lies in the TEMP folder itself.

this folder is in the system and it needs to be cleaned from recorded operations in Photoshop

(you can delete from it everything that is deleted- by the way, the computer's RAM is also cleared).

Remember:
The more and more globally you perform manipulations with one picture (photo), the more memory you need to store all these operations.

Remember:
The RAM swap file Photoshop takes the resource from hard logical drives.

Remember:

Causes of "glitches":

  • 1.Photoiop is buggy if Adobe Photoshop CS is broken.
  • 2.To work with Adobe Photoshop CS, you need at least 1 GB. RAM (ideally 2 GB.)
  • 3. In order for Photoshop not to be buggy, you need to close all unnecessary programs.
  • 4.Look at the task manager and disable unnecessary ones.
  • 5.Check Photoshop properties and see system requirements your computer.

Photoshop can be made easier by deleting a bunch of unnecessary and hardly used sets:
textures, brushes, color swatches, actions, styles, gradients, etc.
To do this, it is desirable, of course, to be able to create the set of brushes, gradients or actions you need for a particular case, for example.

In the Info palette, turn on additional settings panel display

and review your work.

Open Photoshop, bring up the Info window in Photoshop.

It will be something like this:

information about your photoshop:

Helpful Hint: Disc selection:

To work with graphics, allocate a separate empty disk for 20 gigabytes for a temporary Photoshop file

and set these Photo-Graph settings as shown:
The drive must be COMPLETELY empty.

Edit-Delete from memory and select the type of element or buffer that we need to clear.

If the element type or buffer is cleared, it will be dimmed.
Command "Delete from memory" permanently removes operations from memory and you will not be able to undo effects that have already been made on the layer. Memory deletion cannot be undone.
Use the "Delete from memory" command when the amount of information in memory is large

or you are sure that you will not cancel the old commands and also when it noticeably affects the performance of photoshop.

If Photoshop "slows down" for you, and you not enough RAM to solve your problems,

Here is some more advice to help you. Go to Photoshop and open it.

Here you need to set the following parameters:

  • Memory Usage .
  • history & cache .
  • Scratch Discs .
  • GPU Settings .

In the first column, you can set the total available RAM that the program will refer to, either in numerical format or as a percentage of the total memory.

Here you need to set the level of history steps (their number), the cache level and its size.

Working disks can be both system and auxiliary.

And finally, you can check the box next to the item GPU Settings .

Thus, we will enable the possibility of hardware acceleration of our GPU.

If your Adobe Photoshop program still does not work as you expected,

then you can try to clear the RAM of unnecessary components.
To do this, go to the menu

Here you will see 4 options:

Previous actions, clipboard, history, all actions:

Click on them and delete from memory one by one in each paragraph.

Thus you have the opportunity clear the history

from RAM, or clipboard, etc.
