Thanks to Emoji, there is no shortage of emoticons on the iOS platform, and on any other platform either. Moreover, Apple plans to make text communication through various messengers even more, shall we say, emotional. But there is always room for experimentation, and I propose to conduct one of them in this review using the application. SmileyMe, which allows you to turn your own face into a smiley.

A bit of history

And you know that smiley- it's not a product digital age and it appeared long before the total computerization of the world? Moreover, it has a creator, an American Harvey Bell. He spent as much as 10 minutes of his time creating the first emoticon, received $45 for his work and, in fact, this is all the profit he earned from the symbol, which was distributed not even in millions of copies, but in billions. A cheerful yellow face was born in 1963 when representatives State Mutual Life Assurance Cos. of America wanted to raise the morale and mood of their discouraged employees due to instability and turned to Bell with a request to come up with an interesting advertising chip.

Meet Harvey Bell, the creator of the emoticon

The first emoji was released in the form of a badge and was such a huge hit with the State Mutual Life Assurance Cos staff. of America that the company ordered 10,000 of these trinkets for customers, partners, and other employees.

The emoticon gained worldwide fame in 70s of the last century, when a couple of brothers from Spain came up with the slogan " Have a Happy Day” (“Happy Day”), with which he appeared on everything that can be sold, from T-shirts to postcards, emblems, etc.

The classic computer smiley was born only in 1982 year through the efforts of an American scientist Scott Fahlman from Carnegie Mellon University. He suggested using emoticons consisting of a dash and a colon on the information board of the university.

Today, emoticons are almost everywhere and it is difficult to imagine text communication without them. They reinforce the simple printed symbols of the emotional component and, when reading messages from friends and acquaintances, you literally see the interlocutor in front of you, his emotions, feel the mood. Although at the moment emoticons have acquired many more functions, and in addition to expressing emotions, they also carry a lot of semantic load. Moreover, it became possible to use your own face as a smiley, which I will demonstrate below.

Turn yourself into a smiley

To turn ourselves into a smiley, we will use a simple and funny program SmileyMe, which immediately after launch meets with convenient help:

As you can see, everything is simple - choose the emoticon you like from a fairly wide set, take a picture or specify a ready-made picture from the gallery, and get a ready-made set of emoticons with your own face. However, there are several nuances and interesting features.

I'll start with something interesting. The application has a well-implemented shooting module (the front camera is used) with markings where it is desirable to squeeze your face for the best result:

Emoticons can be saved in the gallery (where they end up in animated GIF format), from where they can be transferred to a computer, or used in any instant messengers, including WhatsApp. In addition, directly from the application you can send emoticon via E-mail, SMS or publish on social networks Facebook, Twitter, Vkontakte and Odnoklassniki.

I note that when sending a smiley in a message, it is inserted into it from the clipboard. If the interlocutor has iMessage connected, then everything happens beautifully and without unnecessary questions, but when working with a standard service of a cellular operator, a smiley can only be sent via MMS. Or use third-party messengers, as mentioned above.

If, when creating a smiley, you select an existing photo from the iPhone gallery, then the program automatically finds the face in the photo and highlights the features, no manipulation is required. But it is desirable that the necessary face be the only one in the photograph and occupy most of it. I also had misfires when the program could not determine the physiognomy in the picture. But in general, the algorithm works well. For example, this set of emoticons…

... came from this photo:

Faces fit very harmoniously, however, the process of generating emoticons on the iPhone 5s takes 20-30 seconds.

Each set of emoticons can be generate an unlimited number of times using different faces. For example, it's fun to troll your friends in this way by generating emoticons from their photos available to you. Although, why troll? From this fun, cool entertainment is obtained, such as " Guess whose face it is on the smiley?».

Now let's talk about money. The app is free, but there are in-app purchases. In particular, one set of cowboy emoticons is given for free (which can be used an unlimited number of times with different photos). You will receive another free emoji by logging into your SmileyMe profile through any of the supported social networks. I got the Blonde set. The rest of the emoticons will have to be bought at 33 rubles for each set. That's exactly what I did, having purchased a set with a jock surfer and a comic April 1 (in the screenshot below it is on the right):

Of course, for the most part, SmileyMe is an entertaining joke program that does not carry a special semantic load, but it is made with high quality. Yes, the interface is simple and does not seek to fit into the ideology of iOS 7, but any child can figure it out. You will have to buy most of the emoticons, but they are made cool and the faces from the photos fit just fine. Plus, a quiz organized at home like “Guess who is in the smiley” turned out to be very fun and cheered up my whole family, which I wish you too.

Emoticons have long been a tool for expressing emotions online. If earlier there were only two emoticons - sad and cheerful, now there are a lot of variations on this theme. Do you also want to create your own unique emoticon? Then this guide is for you. Build Your Own Website with Wix.com

Instruction

  • Create a new document in Photoshop. Keep in mind that to create a smiley, a very small document is needed, because the work is carried out using the pixelart technique, that is, we will work with very small pixels. So, create a new document of 50x50 pixels, that's enough. Zoom in on the sheet with a magnifying glass to make it easier to work.

  • Create a new layer. Draw a circle using the Elliptical Marquee Tool. To keep the circle even, hold Shift key.

  • Fill the circle with dark brown. You can use, for example, the color # 411d14.

  • Create a new layer. On it, create a circular selection inside the brown circle, but a little smaller. Select the Gradient Tool and make a gradient from white to any color you choose. The color depends on what color the emoticon should be. Gradient select circular.

  • Now with the Gradient Tool create a gradient by dragging it from the top right corner to the bottom left.

  • Now apply the following styles to the top layer:
  • Inner Shadow:Blend Mode - Normal (choose a light color that matches the color of the smiley)

  • Create a new layer. Now on it with a dark brown color draw the eyes and mouth of the emoticon. Apply the "Drop Shadow" style to this layer, set the settings as in the previous step.
  • Your smiley is ready, now merge all layers with the command Ctrl + E and save. By changing the colors and playing with the layer settings, you can create many of these emojis. You can add new elements to them, texts, and even add animation if necessary. If you want to upload your emoticon somewhere so that it is functional, then convert it to gif format. Good luck to you.

Hello friends. Today's post will be not only useful, but also fun - we will talk about emoticons for the social network Vkontakte. Funny faces and funny pictures have already become an integral part of any communication on the Internet and everyone wants to diversify their texts with new and original ones.

The legs of all emoji grow out of text symbols when it was first invented to denote emotions with symbols. For me, the first emoticon was a smile symbol, represented as a closing bracket “)”, the expanded version of the smile designation additionally has a colon “:)” - this spelling is familiar to everyone, almost everyone online services automatically transform this code into a cheerful smiling face, but it turns out that this is not according to the Feng Shui GOST Unicode standard.

Unicode is a standard where all letters, numbers, icons, and other printed elements are represented as a unique numeric code. This code is understood by any device and displays any character correctly. Using the Unicode format, you can include any icon in your text, even if it's not on your keyboard. For example, if you want to write the character "乔", put its code "𠁒" and you're done.

The widespread use of emoticons has led to the fact that many of their codes have been included in Unicode, along with other characters and signs.

Of course, social networks have become active consumers of emoticons on an industrial scale, Vkontakte is no exception. For the convenience of users, so that people do not have to remember and manually write codes to display certain pictures, Contact uses a tooltip - a special drop-down list where you can visually select the desired emoticon and insert it into a message or post on the wall. But this list does not contain all the emoticon codes supported by VK, only the most popular ones (otherwise the list would be too cumbersome).

The remaining emoticons are, as it were, hidden, but they can be easily used knowing the Unicode designation code. In addition to dialogues and walls, codes hidden emoticons you can also use it in the status, we will analyze how to make statuses in VK with emoticons below.

I want to reveal the topic of emoji in as much detail as possible, but if this description tires you and you yourself know how to insert everything and you just need to get the necessary codes, go straight to. And with the curious, we will delve a little more into history and other interesting points.

What emoticons work in VK and what is the peculiarity of Emoji

Briefly about main reason I mentioned the appearance of emoticons at the beginning of the post - this is the need to convey emotions that are difficult or long to describe in words. As soon as the Internet ceased to be a purely business tool and moved into the category of entertainment, the need to express smiles, sadness and much more began to go off scale. What makes communication alive and humane (facial expressions, gestures) is very difficult to convey through text, not every writer copes with this task perfectly, let alone ordinary people flirting through ICQ.

For example, I can’t imagine how it is possible to convey to the interlocutor by text that I wink at him or show my tongue - it will look stupid and will not produce the desired effect, but a round yellow face with a closed eye or sticking out tongue is what the doctor ordered.

The peak of the distribution of emoticons coincided with the peak of the development of various communication tools - at first it was ICQ with Skype, then millions of Contact, Odnoklassniki and Facebook users were drawn into their networks, now every smartphone owner hangs out on Viber or WhatsApp every day.

Smilies were not always familiar to us now, now VK automatically converts the “:)” code into a cheerful face, initially the entire designation went through symbols, the sender of the message wrote a set of squiggles, the recipient received them in the same form, understanding to the best of his awareness, what is meant. At the initial stage, there were few emoticons, almost all of them were intuitive or easy to remember. If you look closely, then all the main emoticons look like a face turned to one side.

    • Smile - ":)"
    • Laughter - ":D"
    • Sadness - ":("
    • Wink - “;)”
    • Indifference – “:-|”
    • Cry - “:"(“
    • Confused - “:-\”
    • Amazement – “:-o”
    • Surprise – “=-o”
    • Language - “:P”
    • Kiss – “:-*”
    • Restraint – “:-[“
    • Profanity, mat - “:-X”
    • Anger – “:-||”
    • Nausea - ":-!"

You probably noticed that the described codes are displayed on Vkontakte not as symbols, but as beautiful pictures. This is because the social network is programmed that the combination of characters corresponds to the desired emoticon, and in each network the image itself will be slightly different in appearance. The reason for the differences is that such emoticons are not standardized characters from Unicode and there is no standard for their display. On the one hand, this allows each service to make creative images with any level of beauty, on the other hand, devices and services that do not support unofficial encoding of emoticons will not turn them into pictures at all.

But with Unicode characters, the situation is different, emoticons written with this code will be supported everywhere and always. Knowing the smiley codes in the Unicode standard, you can insert absolutely any of almost 1000 smileys anywhere in VK, even in the status, even on the wall.

    Example:

Smiley Laughter, informally denoted as “:D”, this input format will not be converted into a picture everywhere. The standardized Unicode code for this emoji is “😄” and will be displayed as a 😄 icon on all devices.

But Unicode characters have one feature - they are all simple and black and white. And to make them beautiful and colorful, emoji were invented. Each emoji icon corresponds to its own Unicode character. In fact, these are the same characters from Unicode, only displayed differently on devices that support emoji. If there is no support for emoji, then emoticons will still be shown, only with simple icons. Probably confused you, it's better to give an example:

Emoji are emoticons written according to the Unicode standard, but displayed with brighter and more colorful pictures from a special library, if this library is connected on the site or in the service.

Vkontakte Emoji library is included, so all emoticons in the social network are colorful and beautiful.

How to put a smiley in VK status?

The above educational program about emoticons and emoji was carried out for a reason, after it it should become clear to you why writing in the form of a colon with a bracket does not lead to the appearance of a smiley smile, but remains in the form of code - this is not a standard.

    A familiar picture?

For the appearance of the desired emoticon, it is necessary to write not “:)”, but “😄”.

    Now for the steps.

Step 1. Opening the status editor

In order to put a smiley in VK status, go to your page (the top item of the panel on the left is “My Page”) and under the name click the “change status” link:

Step 2. Copy the desired emoticon

An edit field will appear, in which you can write any text and add any emoticon. Recently, in the status of Vkontakte, tooltip support has been introduced with standard set emoticons - if among them there is what you need to choose, if not and the desired emoticon belongs to the hidden category, then there are two ways:

Step 3. Insert an emoticon in the status text

Both inserting the emoticon code and its Unicode symbol will work. Just note that the smiley code must necessarily begin with an ampersand and a hash and end with a semicolon, otherwise VK will not convert it into a picture.

    • Correct: "😄"
    • Wrong: “128516”

    Step 4. Save

How to insert hidden emoticons into messages, discussions and on the VK wall

America in this matter, I will not open. Anyone who has used Contact at least once knows that when you place the mouse cursor in the text box on the wall or in the post discussion box on the right, an icon appears that reveals a huge list of emoticons - you can choose any of them.

For personal messages, this list is even larger, as it includes several bookmarks - individual emoticons for VK (some of them are paid, but for moderate money, although I see no reason to pay, especially since you can get any emoticon you need from the Unicode table ).

But, not all emoji characters supported by Unicode are included in all these lists. In total, VK shows about 500 different emoticons, the rest (almost the same) remain hidden among the hidden ones. That is, they are not that hidden, just social network considers these emoticons not important and not popular, and therefore does not display them in the gallery, and their work is supported in the same way as in the status bar. Yes, and the insertion algorithm hidden emoticons similar:

All you need to use hidden emoticons is to have their standard codes at hand. Below I will give a table of codes, so bookmark the link to this article so that in the future you will not have to look for codes for the desired pictures for a long time.

Table of emoticon codes for VK

When inserting emoticon codes in Vkontakte, it is mandatory to use opening and closing characters - the emoticon begins with () and ends with (;). In other places you can find codes in their pure form, without these symbols, the codes themselves are correct, but they will not work in VK if the indicated designations are not added.

Some emoticons look like squares when inserted, but don't be alarmed, after saving and updating the page, VK will convert them into beautiful pictures.

For comfort when searching for the desired picture, all emoticons are grouped into semantic sections so that you can immediately go to desired section, click on the name of the required category from the list:

The emoticon document is quite small, because it is carried out using the pixelart technique, that is, we will be with very small pixels. So, create a new document of 50x50 pixels, that's enough. Zoom in on the sheet with a magnifying glass to make it easier to work.

Create a new layer. Draw a circle using the Elliptical Marquee Tool. To make the circle even, hold down the Shift key.

Fill the circle with dark brown. You can use, for example, the color # 411d14.

Create a new layer. On it, create a circular selection inside the brown circle, but a little smaller. Select the Gradient Tool and make a gradient from white to any color you choose. The color depends on what color the emoticon should be. Gradient select circular.

Now with the Gradient Tool create a gradient by dragging it from the top right corner to the bottom left.

Now apply the following styles to the top layer:
Inner Shadow:Blend Mode - Normal (choose a light color that matches the color of the smiley)
    Angle - 135
    distance - 1
    size - 0

Create a new layer. Now on it with a dark brown color draw the eyes and mouth of the emoticon. Apply the "Drop Shadow" style to this layer, set the settings as in the previous step.
Your smiley is ready, now merge all layers with the command Ctrl + E and save. By changing the colors and playing with the layer settings, you can create many of these emojis. You can add new elements to them, texts, and even add animation if necessary. If you want to upload your emoticon somewhere so that it is functional, then convert it to gif format. Good luck to you.

Due to high demand from the public, Apple has finally released multi-racial emoji characters in its latest update iOS. But there are times when you can't find the perfect emoji to express your point. Instead of waiting for Apple's next (probably just around the corner) emoji update, it's time to start designing your own emoji.

With imoji- free application for iOS and Android, you can turn any picture, even one you downloaded from the internet, into a custom emoji to share with your friends via MMS.

    Step 1: Choose a picture.
Open the imoji app and click on the "+" sign to add a new "imoji" (emoji) or "artmoji" (artistic emoticon). Click "imoji" and the camera will open. If you want to use an impromptu photo as a smiley, take a picture with the camera, but remember that you are going to make a smiley by orienting the dotted oval.

If you want to use an existing film photo as a emoji, click "Photos" in the bottom left corner to select an image. Move and scale the image so that the object for the future emoticon is completely within the dotted oval, and then click the arrow.

Step 2: Cut out your emoji.
On the next screen, Imoji will cut out what is not inside the oval. But if you want to define more precise borders around your emoji, here you can use your finger to draw an outline around the future emoji.

You don't have to remove the excess from the photo manually, once you close the path around the object, you can click on the scissors button to cut out additional background noise.

    Step 3: Label it.
By default, all imoji emoji are open and available to the rest of the imoji community. If you want to make your emoji public, go ahead and give it a descriptive name so other users can find it in searches. Otherwise, click on the padlock icon and name it whatever you want (only you will be able to see and share this emoji).
