Everything that is written below about how to change the desktop to Windows 7, NOT related to Windows 7 Starter and Home Basic. There is one desktop background and it is NOT editable or customizable.
The theme is a collection of external parameters operating systems(OS):
- design of the start menu and taskbar,
- color scheme of all windows,
- view of icons on the desktop,
- background Pattern,
- etc.
All of these options usually have the same style for all the details in a particular theme. Thus, by activating a specific theme, you can immediately change the design of Windows as a whole. Typically, the user only makes an exception for the desktop background.
The full set of settings included in the theme is as follows:
- color and background image (photo) of the Desktop;
- screensaver;
- icons for standard icons (recycle bin, Computer, My Documents, etc.);
- cursor set;
- fonts, window style, taskbar design;
- sounds indicating various events in the system.
How to change desktop on Windows 7
We use the context menu. To do this, click right click mouse on an empty spot on the desktop (where there are no icons) and select "Personalization".
If you do without the context menu, then in the Start menu you should select "Control Panel", and in it click on "Personalization".

The theme that is used is always marked with a frame (1 in Fig. 1). Before making any changes, you need to pay attention to what happened before, and it is advisable to remember it so that you can return to it if necessary. Do not rush to change everything at once.
You can create your own theme by adjusting the settings you want in the Personalization window (Figure 1). To do this, in the lower part of the window, you need to select a category for editing (Window color, Table background, etc.) and make the necessary changes. To save all the settings, you must use the "Save theme" link, after which in a new window you will need to specify the name of the created theme and click OK. Thereafter new topic will always be available in the Personalization window. But many users, like myself, prefer to use ready-made themes for their desktop.
To change the "old" theme on the computer to another theme, in the "Personalization" window (Fig. 1), you just need to select the theme you like by clicking on it with the mouse. All affected settings are applied instantly (you don't even need to press anything else), so you can quickly evaluate the changes. After closing the window, the selected theme will remain.
Among the proposed themes (Fig. 1) there are "fancy" Aero themes, which differ in the use of all graphic Windows features 7. There are simplified themes that are less demanding on the hardware resources (hardware) of the computer.
For example, if you select a theme called Classic, you can see the combination of the seventh version with Windows 2000 - strict windows and the inscription Start on the button of the same name.
In the lower part of the "Personalization" window (Fig. 1), you can set the following parameters:
- desktop background - 2 in fig. one,
- window color - 3 in fig. one,
- sounds - 4 in fig. one,
- screensaver (Screen Saver) - 5 in fig. one.
Choosing a desktop background
Open the "Personalization" window by right-clicking on free space on the desktop (Fig. 1). In this window, click on the link "Desktop background" (2 in Fig. 1). The "Desktop Wallpaper" window will open:

You can open the drop-down list "Image location" (1 in Fig. 2) and select one of following options:
- solid colors,
- Windows desktop backgrounds (2 in Figure 2),
- Image Library,
- Most popular photos.
You can search for a desktop wallpaper among these options. Using the "Browse" button (2 in Fig. 2), you can select a folder with your image (photo) on your computer and use it as a desktop background. Such a folder is automatically added to the Image Location list (1 in Figure 2).
The Image Position list (3 in Fig. 2) allows you to position the image on the desktop using one of the following options:
- Padding (the picture will be stretched across the screen, the edges may be cut off),
- By size (when the picture is full screen, but the edges of the screen can spoil the stripes with the background color),
- Stretch (the picture will stretch to fit the screen, but the proportions will be distorted),
- Tile (when the picture is copied to full screen, like a tile on a wall),
- Centered (the picture will be in the center of the screen, the background will protrude along the edges, approximately like a substrate).
If you check the box (4 in Fig. 2) "When running on batteries, pause the slide show to save power", then this allows you to avoid the rapid consumption of laptop batteries.
Using the drop-down list "Change picture every" (5 in Fig. 2), you can set the time interval through which the switch to another background image will take place.
How to make your photo as desktop background
As a background, you can use a photo or any picture in .bmp, .gif, .jpg format. The photo can be preliminarily
- Place a photo or other drawing in the Pictures folder.
- Click on the photo with the right mouse button.
- Select the "Set as Desktop Background" command from the context menu that appears.
Window color and appearance

On fig. Figure 3 shows that the sky color is active on the computer (1 in Fig. 3). Active means that this color is set on the desktop of the computer.
You can choose your own window color by clicking on the link "Show color settings" (2 in Fig. 3). The Hue, Saturation, and Brightness sliders will then appear. By moving them, you can change the corresponding parameters. All changes take effect immediately. True, if you close the window using the Cancel button, the previous settings will be set again.

Here you can evaluate with a master's eye many chips of the selected desktop theme. To do this, pay attention to the "Element", where there is a drop-down list (1 in Fig. 4). Select an element and after that you will see that you can change its size, color and font (2 in Fig. 4).
But do not get carried away with changing the elements, because not all of them are equally useful. But if everything has been changed beyond recognition, then it is better not to try to manually restore the previous settings, but to choose one of the ready-made standard themes.
Sound selection

On fig. Figure 5 shows that the “Login to Windows” program event (1 in Fig. 5) corresponds to the sound “Login to Windows.wav” (2 in Fig. 5). If you click on "Check" (3 in Fig. 5), you can hear and possibly recognize the sound when you enter Windows on your computer.
You can completely remove the sound for a particular program event (events), if it is annoying. To do this, in the "Sounds" list (2 in Fig. 5), select the very first option "No".
If you click on the "Browse" button (3 in Fig. 5), then find a suitable sound on your computer, then there will be a different sound for a particular event. You should not get carried away with changing sounds, because long and loud melodies can have a bad effect on the computer.
Screensaver
What is a Screensaver (5 in Fig. 1)? This is the picture that appears on the computer when the computer is idle, when the user does not press the keyboard, mouse, or touch screen.
Some users sometimes set a password for the screen saver so that an outsider cannot see the information on the screen. How to do it?
In the "Personalization" window, click on the "Screen Saver" link (5 in Fig. 1). Check the box next to "Start from the login screen" (On resume, display logon screen). Then, when you exit Screen Saver mode, the password entry screen will appear. After entering the password, you will be able to see your screen.
To remove the screen saver, just press any button on the keyboard or move the mouse.
However, this method does not work if a password is set on the screensaver. For without a password, an outsider will not remove the screensaver (by the way, neither will you). The main thing is not to overdo it with passwords (for some reason they are forgotten, lost, etc.) and do not forget the password for the splash screen yourself.
I do not use a splash screen, I do not use passwords, I use ready-made desktop themes. But each user determines the degree of convenience, protection and security for his computer independently with all the ensuing consequences.
