Everything flows, everything changes, the development of electronics in our turbulent age simply cannot stand still, the emergence of some technologies pushes the birth of others. In unison with the revolutionary changes in the model ranges of Intel desktop and mobile processors, which absorbed the north bridge of the system logic set (graphic core, memory controller and PCI Express controller) and thus made the platform two-component (processor - south bridge), changes followed in the series " atomic" processors, focused on economical, inexpensive, but not very productive systems - netbooks and nettops.

The new 45nm Atom (codenamed Pineview) packs the graphics core (Intel GMA 3150) and memory controller into the same package, eliminating the northbridge of the chipset, reducing the size by 60%. printed circuit board and simplifying the manufacturing process (four-layer wiring instead of the six-layer wiring used in the previous generation platform). In addition, by getting rid of the hot chipsets of the previous generation, the overall consumption of the updated "atomic" platform should be significantly reduced.

Tests of the new platform became possible thanks to the hero of our today's review, which is the 10-inch representative of the ASUS Seashell line - Eee PC 1001PX, in whose chest the Intel Atom N450 beats.

In addition to the configuration, which is based on the new "atomic" Pine Trail platform, the laptop is notable for its absolute dullness, contrary to the glossy fashion trends that have been so popular among laptop manufacturers in recent years. But more on that later. First, we traditionally examine the contents of the box in which the ASUS Eee PC 1001PX is packed.

Packing and scope of delivery

In accordance with the relatively low cost of the laptop (at the time of writing the review, it was about 12 thousand rubles, ASUS Eee PC 1001PX is packaged in a simple cardboard box of rather modest dimensions, by which it is easy to determine the form factor of the portable computer itself. On the side faces there are white wavy lines and the unchanged designation of the ASUS netbook family - "Eee PC". There are also two stickers on the box: one indicates the presence of a trial (60-day) version in the list of supplied software Microsoft office 2007, the other one informs about the configuration of the netbook.

ASUS Eee PC 1001PX: packing box

With the exception of the ASUS Eee PC 1001PX itself, a concise minimum was found in the box, which for ASUS products means a “very budget solution”: a 4400 mAh battery (6-cell), an AC adapter with a blue light indicator on the case and a power cable, warranty card for one year and user manual in Russian.

ASUS Eee PC 1001PX: package contents

In more expensive models, the manufacturer often includes a mouse and a carrying bag, but the Eee PC series, with the exception of some older models, has not received such an honor.

Preinstalled Software

The ASUS Eee PC 1001PX comes pre-installed with a 32-bit Microsoft Windows 7 starter. In case of unstable work operating system or other serious troubles and failures, the manufacturer traditionally completes the netbook with a Recovery system, which can be launched in two ways: using the hidden recovery partition on the hard drive (pressing the "F9" key when turning on the laptop, after which you need to follow simple instructions), or using a pre-recorded USB flash drive (at least 16 GB in size). It's easy to see that the ASUS Eee PC 1001PX is the first Eee PC laptop in our lab that doesn't use DVDs as a recovery tool. This decision seems to be the right one, since netbooks are rarely equipped with optical drives, and therefore, to recover from DVD, you will need to purchase an external drive. The advantages of a "flash drive" are obvious: the cost about a thousand rubles, less time to restore the system compared to resuscitators on optical discs and the ability to bring the operating system to the factory state, even if you changed Windows 7 to another OS. The process of writing a flash drive is simple: when you start the netbook, you must press the F9 key, as when restoring a computer from a hidden hard drive partition, and then select Backup. To resuscitate a netbook using a flash drive, press “Esc” at the moment it is turned on and select a USB drive, then the recovery is similar to the resuscitation process from the Recovery partition on the hard drive, only it takes a little longer.

Due to the low cost of the ASUS Eee PC 1001PX and its rather modest capabilities, the preinstalled software quite poor. Let's start with the ASUS Eee Docking program, typical for the Seashell family, which is a control center for a set of proprietary utilities.

ASUS Eee Docking

The software package includes several modules: Access, Sharing, Experience and Tools. The Access panel is designed to access the built-in Game Park casual game manager (which contains a number of demos), the ASUS @Vibe digital content multimedia storage, the ASUS AP Bank software resource, and the free ASUS WebStorage online data storage.

"Sharing" includes only one E-CAM - a program for working with the built-in webcam, much simpler than the usual ASUS LifeFrame laptop users.

E-CAM: main window

The utility has the ability to use special effects (distorting and mirror effects, filters, funny frames and animation), the shooting resolution is 320x240 pixels. There is a function of continuous photography up to 10 frames with an interval of 1 to 5 seconds and a photograph delay set by the user. To view the footage in the program there is a special player E-Player, completely devoid of any possibility of editing.

E-CAM: Footage Player

Usually "Experience" contains applications for optimizing sound quality, but in the case of the ASUS Eee PC 1001PX, a simplified version is included in the panel ASUS technology Splendid Video Enhancement. With the help of the utility, color reproduction is controlled by choosing from predefined modes that change color saturation and color temperature. In addition to the five modes laid down by the manufacturer (“Normal”, “Splendid”, “Vivid”, “Soft” and “Theater”), you can also create your own for watching videos. To do this, select the “Video Splendid” tab in the application, and then use the proposed settings to achieve the desired image.

The last module, Tools, is a set of useful tools, including Live Update (automatic update), Font Resizer (font size management) and settings for the ASUS Eee Docking itself.

ASUS Font Resizer

The Eee Docking tab can be located on either side of the netbook's screen, and when not in use, it automatically hides, leaving only a small tail on the display. The settings allow you to set its transparency, as well as adjust the list of programs installed by default in the corresponding panels.

The netbook is very generously endowed by the manufacturer with programs for working with text documents. As with any other laptop, the ASUS Eee PC 1001PX comes with free app Adobe Reader 9.3.0 for working with pdf files.

Adobe Reader 9.3.0

Also included is Microsoft Works 9.0. The program includes a text editor, spreadsheet, database, calendar and PowerPoint presentation viewer.

Microsoft Works

Plus, as mentioned above, the ASUS Eee PC 1001PX comes with a trial version of Microsoft Office 2007 with a limited 60-day license.

To protect against viruses and prevent various Internet attacks, ASUS offers a trial version of Trend Micro Internet Security. The app scans inbox mail messages, detects and removes spyware, limits the user's access to sites that, in the opinion of the program, contain data dangerous for the computer.

The last of the pre-installed software on the netbook is the Super Hybrid Engine utility that manages energy savings. The application has three operating modes: "Super Performance", "High Performance" and "Power Saving". Two more modes "Auto High-Perfomance" and "Auto Power-Saving" are also possible, available only when the power supply is connected or disconnected, respectively.

Exterior: design and ergonomics

ASUS Eee PC 1001PX: case colors

ASUS Eee PC 1001PX is one of the miniature representatives of the "seashell" family. The profile of the netbook due to the thickening in the middle remotely resembles a real shell. Contrary to nature, "shells" with the index 1001PX come in three colors: white, black and blue. Instead of the easily soiled glossy coating, which has recently been worn out by manufacturers of portable equipment, the lid has a matte ornament, consisting of a huge number of small squares imitating a carbon coating.

ASUS Eee PC 1001PX: coating texture

All corners are gently contoured, making the ASUS Eee PC 1001PX look smaller and slimmer than it really is. Despite the small size of the lid and the apparent rigidity, when pressed lightly, it easily bends, and streaks appear on the LCD matrix.

ASUS Eee PC 1001PX front view

There is no display lock. The lid is held at the required angle or in the lowered state due to tight hinges, which are located in the protruding parts of the lower part of the frame around the screen. There is a small protrusion on the front of the cover to make it easier to lift the display. The protruding elements of the hinge loops cut quite deeply into the base of the case, due to which the maximum opening angle of the netbook decently falls short of 180 degrees, amounting to only about 130 °.

ASUS Eee PC 1001PX: opening angle

Having opened the “shell”, we find complete consonance with the external design: everything is black and everything is matte (even the surface of the matrix!), The only exception is the chrome touchpad button. The ornament on the platforms under the wrists exactly repeats the pattern on the lid. The frame around the screen is stylized as rough polishing, there are six rubber pads around its perimeter.

ASUS Eee PC 1001PX: open

In the center of the upper part of the frame around the screen, a 0.3-megapixel webcam is built-in, framed by a chrome rim and deprived of the possibility of independent rotation (where the cover is looking, the “look” of the lens is directed there). A blue activity indicator is mounted to the left of the “eye”, which is almost invisible when the LED is off. Symmetrically on both sides, the camera is surrounded by a pair of microphone holes.

ASUS Eee PC 1001PX: webcam and microphones

ASUS Eee PC 1001PX is equipped with a widescreen (16:9 aspect ratio) 10.1-inch matrix with a maximum resolution of 1024x600 pixels. The horizontal viewing angles are not huge, but they are quite comfortable for work, which cannot be said about the vertical ones: a strong raising of the lid leads the picture to the negative, when you look at the matrix from above, the picture noticeably brightens. On the other hand, no glare was found on the matte surface of the screen, the netbook is ideally adapted to work on the go and in any light - unlike popular glossy models, which catch glare too easily with their screens. The number of brightness gradations in the studied laptop is non-standard for ASUS - eleven. The lower levels make it possible to work comfortably not only in the dark, but also in dim daylight. Brightness is adjusted by pressing the "Fn" and "F5" or "F6" keys together.

Despite the fact that the larger "shells" actively use now fashionable keyboards with freestanding keys, inexpensive and miniature ASUS Eee PC 1001PX is equipped with a conventional input device, however, with keys as close as possible in size to adult laptops. There are only 82 buttons, they are all black with a slight roughness and without any recession in the middle. The keys have a soft and rather deep stroke, quiet when pressed, the actuation moment is well felt. The very execution of the buttons is rather non-standard, about a millimeter from each edge they have a cut in the form of a small step, thereby increasing the distance between the keys. The bottom row of the keyboard is equipped with buttons slightly increased in height, it also fits the cursor block, which even before touching the “arrows” hurts the eyes. The thing is that the left and right "arrows" are large, and "up" and "down" are half the height, which for many users may be an unpleasant surprise.

In addition to standard functions, the "arrows" are also assigned the powers of the "Home", "Page Up", "Page Down" and "End" keys, activated via the "Fn" button. It is easy to guess that the vertical column of sounded keys, due to the small width of the base, has been abolished. As always, there is a conditional (combined with the main) numeric keypad and one special Microsoft Windows button. The function keys are heavily truncated in height and slightly in width, Pause, Print Screen, Insert and Delete close them on the right. Latin letters are highlighted in white, Russian letters are greenish (smaller size), the keys, to use the hidden functions of which you need to press and hold "Fn", are painted pale blue, like the "numeric keypad" buttons.

ASUS Eee PC 1001PX: keyboard

The ASUS Eee PC 1001PX is free of unnecessary clutter with extra keys, the netbook has only one chrome-plated blue backlit laptop power button, located directly below the right hinge.

ASUS Eee PC 1001PX: power button

Surface touch panel black, devoid of the texture of the surrounding surface of the base, but located on the same level with it. The exit of the finger beyond the touchpad is tactilely well felt thanks to a slight roughness and a barely noticeable rim located around the perimeter of the panel. The reaction to the touch of the fingers is excellent. The touchpad supports "MultiTouch", and therefore, touching the touchpad with one finger performs the standard functions of moving the cursor, pressing the left mouse button and entering (quick double tap), using two fingers simultaneously allows vertical and horizontal scrolling, while pressing the right button is simulated with three mice. There are also zoom functions, for which you need to close or spread your fingers diagonally across the panel (from the lower left corner to the upper right corner) and rotate objects by scrolling two spread fingers on the touchpad surface. At the base of the touchpad, there is one chrome-plated swing key with a shallow travel when pressed and a well-tangible actuation moment with a characteristic click.

All available indicators are placed on the left end of the base (from left to right):

ASUS Eee PC 1001PX: system indicators

Power indicator (lights blue when the laptop is turned on; blinks when the PC is in standby mode; when the computer is turned off, the indicator is off);
Battery charging indicator (lights up orange when the battery is charging; off - completely discharged; blinks orange when the battery charge is less than 10%, lights up green when the battery is more than 95% charged and the laptop is plugged in);
Activity indicator (shows the computer is accessing the hard drive, lighting up at the time of access);
Wireless interfaces indicator.

Indicators for fixing the upper case (Caps Lock) and the numeric keypad (Num Lock) are absent, instead of them, when the function is activated, a small information window lights up on the screen.

The lowered top cover does not interfere with the visibility of the LEDs, hiding only their symbols.

ASUS Eee PC 1001PX is equipped with a 4400 mAh (6-cell) battery. The battery is designed for a voltage of 10.8 V, which, when converted to watt-hours, gives us 48 Wh.

ASUS Eee PC 1001PX: Battery

At the bottom of the laptop there are: two latches battery(spring and mechanical), a compartment for RAM modules, where one bar is installed, a sticker with the operating system number and a pair of quiet stereo speakers playing “table”. To get to the rest ASUS components Eee PC 1001PX, the bottom cover must be completely removed.

Internal content

As mentioned at the beginning, ASUS Eee PC 1001PX is based on a single-core Intel Atom N450 processor with a clock speed of 1.66 GHz, which is based on the Pineview-M core, manufactured using a 45 nm process technology and having 512 KB L2 cache . The typical heat dissipation of the new Atom processors is 5.5W.

Intel Atom N450 in two test power modes

The Atom processor supports the Enhanced Intel SpeedStep (EIST) energy-saving technology, which allows you to reduce the multiplier and, accordingly, the operating frequency during idle periods. Thanks to the presence Intel technologies Hyper-Threading, a single-core Atom processor is represented by two virtual cores in the operating system and in some cases is capable of processing two data streams simultaneously. The Intel Atom N450 has support for 64-bit operating systems.

The graphics core is integrated into the processor Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 3150 supporting DirectX 9, Vertex Shader 3.0, Pixel Shader 2.0, 200 MHz core clock and maximum volume RAM 256 MB (this is not local video memory, it is allocated from the main system memory netbook). The RAM controller built into the Intel Atom N450 supports modules up to 2 GB in size.

The ASUS Eee PC 1001PX uses Intel Tiger Point NM10 as the chipset. The HMC has USB 2.0 support, up to two SATA ports and up to four PCI Express x1 lines, through which additional peripheral controllers can be connected to it, there is also an integrated Intel High Definition Audio sound core.

The netbook is equipped with an Atheros AR2427 Wireless Network Adapter supporting 802.11b/g/n data transfer standards and a WDC WD1600BEVT-80A23T0 2.5" hard drive with a 5400 rpm spindle speed, SATA interface and 160 GB.

The laptop's only RAM slot is occupied by a gigabyte DDR2 module with a frequency of 800 MHz.

ASUS Eee PC 1001PX: RAM compartment

According to technical specifications, the installed amount of RAM can be increased to two gigabytes by replacing the existing module.

Test Methodology

Before starting testing, the ASUS Eee PC 1001PX had its hard drive formatted under file system NTFS, then operating system installed Microsoft system Windows 7 Ultimate x64 (English version). Drivers were taken from manufacturer's website.

During testing, the following parameters were set:

Screen Saver - disabled;
Windows Defender - disabled;
System Protection - disabled;
Windows Update - disabled;
Scheduled disk defragmentation - disabled;
Enabled deleting files immediately after placing them in the trash;
Screen brightness set to maximum;
Resolution of the liquid crystal matrix - maximum, 1024x600;
Aero-interface - activated;
Desktop Theme - Windows 7;
Volume level - 10%.

The test package is divided into two parts:

1st part: tests to measure the performance of both the system as a whole and its individual components:

Synthetic benchmarks for overall performance (PCMark Vantage 1.0.2 and SYSmark 2007);
Game performance tests (3DMark 2006 1.2.0, Half Life 2: Episode Two, F.E.A.R.).

Part 2 is focused on determining the battery life of a portable computer from a battery, measurements are made using the MobileMark 2007 test application.

MobileMark 2007 contains three modes of operation:

Productivity mode - intermittent, but serious load on the system;
Reader mode - emulation of reading a pdf file (in the "Read" test mode, the page is rewound every 2 minutes);
Movie (DVD) viewing mode.

In addition to the above, 3DMark 2006 1.2.0 scenes were repeatedly run on the netbook, after which, using an infrared remote thermometer, the temperatures of the LCD panel, keyboard, bottom surface, “exhaust” (a point with the maximum temperature was searched for) and processor (using CPUID Hardware Monitor). This test was carried out twice: when working on a hard smooth table surface and a soft fleecy fabric surface.

Performance Testing

As always, testing opens the synthetic application Futuremark PCMark Vantage. The overall test result is calculated by the formula: PCMark Score = 87 x (Geometric mean of the main tests), where the geometric mean is (result 1 * result 2 * ...)^(1 / number of results). In the Vantage version, the results are presented with reference to typical work scenarios, and not to computer components:

The "Memories" scenario is dedicated to evaluating the performance of systems when working with a digital media archive, including amateur photos and home videos.
The TV and Movies test uses high-definition video playback and transcoding as a load.
The "Gaming" test measures the platform's suitability for running 3D gaming applications.
The "Music" scenario is mainly about transcoding audio files of various formats.
The "Communication" test simulates visiting web resources, working with email and use of IP-telephony.
"Productivity" is another simple scenario that simulates working with typical office applications;
And the last one, "HDD", evaluates the performance of the hard disk only.

The power of the single-core Intel Atom N450 cannot be called huge, the processor shows low results corresponding to the family. After changing the power supply to the battery, the energy-saving schemes embedded in the Atom N450 are activated, as a result, the total indicators are reduced in proportion to the core frequency.

The SYSmark test package is aimed at determining the overall performance of the system under various load patterns. SYSmark 2007 models the user experience to solve specific problems in several of the most common applications. At the output, the package issues several indexes that show the performance of systems demonstrated under various scenarios of activity, which measures the performance of systems in real applications when solving specific problems.

Surprisingly, in the SYSmark 2007 package, the inclusion of SpeedStep power saving technology was not noticed, the test results remained practically unchanged after removing the plug from the outlet. Nevertheless, the performance level of the Intel Atom N450 can be described as quite low, in fact, it does not differ from the level of the previous generation Atom processors.

The 3DMark test program is a set of 3D scenes based on its own graphics engine that load the video subsystem in various ways.

It's hard to call the Intel GMA 3150 a gaming graphics adapter: the results shown in the 3DMark 2006 synthetic package are too weak. To be more convincing, here are the results of the GMA 3150 in the old games Half Life 2: Episode Two and F.E.A.R at maximum and minimum quality settings:

It seems that comments are unnecessary: the new Intel GMA 3150 video adapter is not designed even for old games, its maximum is solitaire.

Battery life and thermal performance

Battery life is one of the key characteristics of a portable computer, sometimes even more important than performance. Therefore, the measurement of this particular value is carried out by a test block separate from the performance. Testing was performed using the MobileMark 2007 package. During the tests, the laptop's transitions to the "Stand-by" and "Hibernate" states were disabled.

The first scenario (Productivity) that was used to measure laptop battery life is based on a simulation of the user experience in typical office applications. The load is unstable, the user now and then breaks away from doing work. The second test is to measure the operating time of a laptop on battery power in the case of a simple text reading. Adobe Reader was used as the program that displays the document on the screen. The third and final scenario used in our tests simulated using a mobile computer to play DVD video using an InterVideo WinDVD player.

For testing in the "DVD viewing" mode, together with a portable computer, an external optical drive Optiarc AD-7633A in an Agestar IUB5SA container was used.

The new "atomic" platform looks, if not revolutionary, but very worthy. At full screen brightness, the ASUS Eee PC 1001PX lasted almost six hours. Nevertheless, he did not set a record: we expected a much better result from a netbook on a new, more economical platform - at least eight hours of battery life.

At the end of the test, we present the temperature readings taken by the netbook during idle operation and after a half-hour run of 3DMark 2006, on hard and soft surfaces. The temperature was measured using an infrared thermometer, the room at the time of testing was 23 degrees Celsius. On each of the surfaces, a point with a maximum temperature was searched for. Processor heating was measured using the CPUID Hardware Monitor utility.

The hot air exhaust system of the ASUS Eee PC 1001PX is built excellently, the netbook heats up quite moderately without making any noticeable noise. The temperature of the processor, even on a soft fleecy surface and under serious loads, is far from critical values.

Advantages and disadvantages of ASUS Eee PC 1001PX

Advantages:

Spectacular design, despite the budget of the product;
Matte body and matrix coating;
Long battery life;
Access to Eee Storage online storage;
Good operating system recovery system (including the possibility of resuscitation using a flash drive);
Moderate cost.

Flaws:

Low performance;
Poverty of the delivery set;
Small screen resolution;
Limited opening angle;
Inconvenient cursor block of the keyboard;
Lack of a number of wireless interfaces (Bluetooth and WiMAX);
Lack of optical disc drive and HDMI port.

Conclusion

Although ASUS EeePC 1001PX can hardly be called a bright netbook - the manufacturer assigns this role to more expensive models of the Seashell family - but it suits the role of an inexpensive "workhorse" much better than glossy models that are so common now. The lack of gloss on the case, coupled with the original ornament on the top cover and the area under the wrists, is a very practical solution in terms of soiling: the case looks clean and tidy even without regular wiping it with a special cloth, which can be said about glossy models that collect all the dust and fingerprints it is forbidden. The matte finish of the matrix makes it convenient to use laptop in almost any light. Six hours of battery life gives its owner the possibility of long-term use of the netbook in the field. Unfortunately, the manufacturer saved on WiMAX and Bluetooth wireless interfaces, which are very relevant today, the presence of which would make the netbook even more wireless and autonomous. In general, the minuses are overwhelmed by the rather modest cost of the netbook. So, if you don’t need the performance of “adult” laptops and you are quite within the framework of the needs of an ordinary office user, then the ASUS Eee PC 1001PX is an excellent choice as a companion that accompanies you everywhere, able to work on your knees for a long time without burdening them with kilograms. your weight.

Moving away from glossy gloss towards practical and comfortable materials has become for a series of netbooks ASUS Eee PC one of the main trends of the past year. If in expensive models the case is made of solid plates of polished aluminum, then in this model the case is plastic. However, even here it was not without a design trick - the small squares of the coating texture give the impression that the cover is made of a carbon sheet. In white, this is not as noticeable as on dark (black or blue) models.

The rest of the form and functionality of the netbook case ASUS EeePC 1001PX made in the same Seashell style - increased height of the base on the back side, thin front edge, smoothed edges. Two hinges on the edges securely hold the screen cover in any position, with a slight tide in front helping to open it. The screen opening angle is about 130 degrees, the wide frame around the display is also plastic, but its texture is already stylized as a polished coating.

It would not be out of place to mention the low weight and convenient location of ports - in principle, this is a quality inherent in netbooks, but the triangular base of Seashell cases has always contributed to convenient work at the computer.

A few words about the technical filling - the representative of the Atom Pineview platform (N450), although not the newest mobile processor, is widespread and has already proven itself well. Despite the preservation of the general principles of the previous generation Atom, in the PineTrail-M structure, for the first time, a transition was made to a combined configuration of the processor core and the north bridge. On the same substrate with the CPU, the graphics core and the memory controller work. This solution does not provide a dramatic increase in system performance, but improves power consumption.

This netbook has an Intel Atom N450 processor. This is a single-core solution, but the use of Hyper Threading technology allows you to perform calculations in two threads, which slightly increases performance. The N450 processor is made according to the 45-nm process technology, the volume of the cache memory of the first level is 64 KB, the second - 512 KB. Supports extended instruction sets SSE2, SSE3, SSSE3. It has a low power consumption of 5.5W and a total system TDP of 7.8W, compared to 11.8W for N270/N280 based netbooks. The declared clock frequency of the Intel N450 is 1660 MHz, but thanks to the Enhanced Intel SpeedStep and Intel Enhanced Deeper Sleep technologies, the Atom N450 operates at half the frequency most of the time, which significantly increases offline time work. The amount of RAM preinstalled in the slot is 1 GB (manufacturer - ASint Tech., model SSY2128M8-JGE3B).

The 10-inch matte display (HSD03E9) has a 16:9 aspect ratio, which indicates the working nature of the computer application. The complete absence of glare, combined with the good brightness of the LED backlight, eliminates the problems of using the netbook in bright light.

The camera (0.3 MP) at the top of the frame does not have a protective shutter, which has become a novelty of the series in latest models eee PC.

The Western Digital hard drive (model WDC WD1600BEVT-80A23T0) holds 160 GB of data and rotates at 5400 rpm. This is the minimum volume among modern models using SATA hard drives, but for office work and this volume is enough - and taking into account the low cost of external drives and flash-cards, the problem of finding free space will not be critical.

Expansion ports ASUS EeePC 1001PX distributed over the surface of the case as follows: on the front face from below are LED indicators wireless network and battery performance; on the right side - a combined audio jack, USB port 2.0, security port, LAN network connector; on the left - a power cable input, a VGA video output, another USB 2.0 and a universal card reader. The back side in the opening between the hinges of the screen is entirely given over to the battery slot.

Membrane keyboard evokes a keen sense of nostalgia for the very first models of the Eee PC series - t from the same modest plastic, wide keys with almost no gaps. But some work has been done, the current input device can no longer be compared with the cheapest model (for example, Eee PC 701), the key travel has become softer. There are no additional keys - on the top right there is only a small button for turning on the device, metal with a blue backlight.

The touchpad is highlighted on the common surface of the base with a small rim and has a different texture. Support for multitouch technology helps with simple gestures to scale or rotate objects in the program window. Double-click emulation works great both on the panel itself and on the fused rocker key.

The laptop is equipped with a gigabit network card and a Wi-Fi module (802.11a/b/g) based on an Atheros AR2427 chip.

The set of netbook programs, following the general budgetary orientation of the model, does not strike the imagination, but contains much more than the necessary minimum. In addition to the trial version of MS Office, the MS Works calendar, TrendNet antivirus, and the full package of proprietary EeePc Soft utilities (which will help you adjust system performance and power consumption, screen images, etc.) are installed. The operating system is a simple MS Win XP Home Edition.

Battery life from a 4400 mAh lithium-ion battery - more than 6 hours in read mode, this is the expected figure for netbooks based on the PineTrail platform, which is characterized by just economical compared to the first versions of Intel Atom.

The overall performance of the Atom N450 single-core processor is at a level sufficient for office use - which is demonstrated by the general results of synthetic benchmarks. Of course, the built-in Intel GMA 3150 video adapter is not enough for 3D games, but passing 3DMark'06 tests with a result other than zero - already speaks about the stability of the configuration. Given the small amount of memory and its low operating frequency by today's standards, we can conclude that it is practical to merge the RAM controller with the central chip - but replacing the module with 2GB (removing the bottom cover) does not hurt.

To each his own. Someone needs a laptop for work, someone is looking for a multimedia device for home, for someone the “stuffing” is important, someone is chasing the appearance. Everyone has their own passions, everyone pursues certain goals. So, netbooks, as a rule, are needed for those who want to stay online all the time. They are easy to carry, they can even fit in a lady's handbag. Surfing the Internet is a direct responsibility of netbooks. But the most pleasant thing about netbooks is the affordable price.

A prime example of a mini laptop is the ASUS Eee PC 1001PX. For 10 thousand rubles you will receive a device with an Intel Atom N450 processor, an integrated Intel X3150 graphics card, a 160 GB hard drive and 1 GB of RAM. The main advantage of the netbook is the lack of gloss. Don't worry about appearance laptop - the developers have already taken care of this.

Design

Compact and lightweight. Perhaps these two words can describe any netbook. ASUS Eee PC 1001PX is no exception. But you can’t call a particularly thin device. If the front of the mini-laptop looks sophisticated, then the back is not noticeable. Dry figures eloquently confirm this fact: 262x178x25.9/36.5 mm. The device weighs only 1.1 kg (with a three-cell battery).

The lid of the Eee PC 1001PX is made of matte plastic with a small square texture (“carbon look” coating). The netbook can be black or white. In any case, the ultra-mobile PC will not clog and overwrite.

Opening the laptop, you immediately find yourself in a "matte" country. The only glossy element is the double mouse button (it is made "under chrome"). Oh yes, and the laptop power button, located in the right left corner. The frame around the display, work area, touchpad, buttons - everything is matte. By the way, the display itself is also matte, but first things first.

There is no display lock. The lid is held in place by tight hinges. There is a small protrusion on the front of the cover to make it easier to lift the display. The maximum opening angle of the netbook is only about 130 degrees.

Display

As noted above, the screen surface is matte. This is the main advantage of the matrix. The display diagonal is 10.1 inches, the resolution is 1024x600 pixels. You can work behind a netbook even in the sun - the picture will not disappear and will not be distorted.

A few words about image quality. When compared with glossy screens, the brightness, contrast and color of the display is clearly not enough. But the netbook, in fact, does not need a colorful picture - no one will work with graphics for the ASUS Eee PC 1001PX anyway. The horizontal viewing angles are not huge, but they are quite comfortable for work, which cannot be said about the vertical ones.

Keyboard and touchpad

The keyboard is located across the entire width of the topcase. It consists of 82 matte buttons, the size of which is close to standard. The keys have a soft and rather long travel, quiet when pressed, the actuation moment is felt good. You don’t need to get used to the layout especially - all the buttons are in their places. Designers from ASUS did not work on the arrow block: “right / left” turned out to be large, and “up / down” - indecently small. Latin letters are highlighted in white, Russian letters are in green.

The matte touchpad is devoid of texture, it is quite large and has excellent tactile properties. Fingers on the touch pad glide quickly and easily, the cursor is positioned perfectly. The touchpad supports multi-touch technology, which is good news. Under the panel is a chrome dual mouse button - the only place where fingerprints can remain. All available indicators are placed on the left end of the base.

Processor and performance

The filling of the ASUS Eee PC 1001PX will not surprise you. The package bundle of the laptop is absolutely trivial. The heart of the netbook is the Intel Atom N450 processor clocked at 1660 MHz. This is a single-core CPU with 512 KB L2 cache, manufactured using a 45-nm process technology. The maximum power consumption is 5.5W.

The netbook has 1 GB DDR2 RAM (bus frequency 533 MHz). If this is not enough, then the amount of RAM can be increased to 2 GB (this is the maximum).

The processor has an integrated graphics core Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150. This video card supports DirectX 9, Vertex Shader 3.0, Pixel Shader 2.0, and can take up to 256 MB from RAM.

All documentation and programs will be stored on a hard disk with a rotation speed of 5400 rpm. The volume of the hard drive is 160 GB.

Ports and communications

In terms of functional training, the ASUS Eee PC 1001PX contains only the bare essentials. HDMI interfaces, eSATA, ExpressCard is not worth looking for on the edges. Everything is very modest and stingy. But, in fact, the netbook does not need more. On the left side there is a VGA video output, a power supply connector, a USB 2.0 port and a built-in card reader (Secure Digital High Capacity and Multimedia Card). There is also a ventilation grill for the cooling system.

The right side contains a combined headphone and microphone jack, another USB 2.0 port, Kensington Lock, and an RJ-45 LAN jack.

To access wireless networks, there is wifi adapter(802.11b, 802.11g). But there is no Bluetooth.

The package may include either a 3- or 6-cell lithium-ion battery. With a six-cell battery netbook is able to work for about 9 hours.

Conclusion

ASUS Eee PC 1001PX is a netbook in a practical matte case, with excellent ergonomics at a very reasonable price. Non-Glare display, long battery life, convenient input devices - all these are the undeniable advantages of a netbook. But the model is not without its shortcomings. The disadvantages of the device can safely be written down as low performance, lack of Bluetooth and WiMAX wireless interfaces, and a weak set of ports. But the model is definitely worth the money.

The Asus Eee PC 1001 netbook is a compact laptop with an ergonomic keyboard, slim design, multi-touch touchpad and access to 10 GB Eee Storage online storage. Thanks to its compactness, lightness and long battery life, it is convenient for work on the road.
