Lenovo IdeaPad G500 is a budget model, which, with a fairly modest price tag, impresses with its versatility and functionality. The power of this device is enough not only for work and office tasks, but also for entertainment, as well as using it as a home multimedia station.

Appearance

The exterior of this model is quite attractive. Possessing some rigor and conciseness, it nevertheless pleases with pleasant and smooth lines, which, combined with a black glossy case, leaves a pretty good impression.

As for the build quality, in general, everything is done at a fairly high level, without gaps and cracks. The only thing that does not inspire confidence is the quality of the lid. Even with slight pressure, its deflection is felt. However, it is unlikely that the matrix will be damaged in this way.

The working surface of the interior has good rigidity, which cannot be said about the keyboard substrate. It bends, albeit slightly, over almost the entire area. At the first acquaintance, this can lead to some discomfort in the process of work.

Device weight 2.6 kg, dimensions 37.7x25.0x3.4 cm.

Screen Lenovo IdeaPad G500 - look with joy

What frankly pleased is the screen. With dimensions of 15.6 inches and a resolution of 1366 × 768 pixels, it is equipped with high-quality LED backlighting, which significantly improves the image display. It is also worth adding good viewing angles, competent color reproduction and a normal color balance. Despite the glossy finish of the screen, using the device is equally comfortable both indoors and out, even under intense sunlight.

Input devices - when nothing distracts from work

This component, despite the budget segment of the Lenovo IdeaPad G500, is also made at a fairly high level. There is a standard island-style keyboard, supplemented by a block of numeric keys. Their course is average, no special inconveniences were found during typing. The main thing is not to put too much pressure on the panel. There is no backlight, which, by the way, rather a rule than an exception for this price segment.

High-quality touchpad makes you forget about the mouse. Despite the rather modest size, it has high sensitivity, short response time and competent positioning. You don't have to worry about misses or false positives.

Connectors and communications - do not expect anything supernatural

The model offers a standard range of interfaces inherent in the vast majority of such devices. It includes: DVD-drive with support for two-way recording, HDMI, RJ-45, VGA, card reader, combined audio port, 2 USB 2.0 and 1 USB 3.0.

Technical parameters - when budget is not a hindrance

The hardware component is represented by a fairly impressive set that allows you to use a laptop both in the office and at home. The basis of the system is latest intel Core i3 processor, up to 2.5 GHz and 2 cores, DDR3 RAM memory from 4 to 6 GB, integrated video adapter ATI Radeon HD 8570 and hard drive, from 500 GB to 1 TB.

Autonomy in the model is slightly above average - with standard operating parameters, the laptop is able to last about 5 hours.

Summarizing all of the above, it is worth recognizing that the Lenovo IdeaPad G500 laptop turned out to be very, very successful. Excellent ergonomics, a fairly high level of performance, a high-quality screen - working with this device can be a real pleasure. And more than an attractive price tag will help to forget about minor shortcomings.

Getting to know Lenovo g500 you understand that this is actually a fairly high-quality laptop, however, which has some drawbacks, which we will talk about a little lower. So, the device in the maximum configuration is 4 nuclear processor and 8 GB random access memory, such a configuration even now makes it possible to run programs that are quite demanding on hardware, as well as some modern games. In addition, we have a high-quality assembly and a pleasant appearance laptop, and a comfortable keyboard with a nice touchpad. Separately, it is worth mentioning that the device does not overheat and works quite quietly, which is a definite plus. In general, we would recommend Lenovo g500 to a closer acquaintance. We also add that this laptop will suit a wide range of users because of its inexpensive price, as well as a relatively powerful system.

Describe in a few words this device how can cheap office laptop without any frills. The main feature of this model in comparison with laptops of previous generations is a significantly reduced case thickness. In the specification, it is worth highlighting a weak Intel Pentium 2020M processor, a 500 GB hard drive, pre-installed Windows 8 and a price of 17,000 rubles.

Cheap laptops for this moment it's hard to surprise anyone, the market is literally flooded with budget models. Lenovo also decided to contribute to this segment something new, they tried to make the laptop case as compact and thin as possible, which is typical for more expensive models.
In this review, we will try to describe as much as possible all the features of the Lenovo G500s and compare it with other budget models from well-known manufacturers.

Frame

The G500s series of notebooks is equipped with a black matte plastic case, annoying soiled gloss is present only directly on the screen. The texture of the plastic on the inside of the laptop case has a pattern of vertical stripes, which is very reminiscent of the appearance of brushed structured aluminum. Top cover has a ribbed structure. The plastic is not particularly easily soiled, but fingerprints still often remain.
Unlike previous models of the G series (G580, G585), the G500s has a much thinner case (about 8 mm thinner). Lenovo follows a fairly correct trend to reduce the size of the case, while the main competitors Dell and Toshiba do not think about it at all and continue to release thick budget laptops.

The body plastic is quite typical for the budget segment, there are noticeable deflections of the material in the most vulnerable places, to the left and right of the keyboard, under the touchpad, in the left upper corner. The lid plastic is also quite flimsy, there are significant deflections when pressed, which leads to slight distortion of the image on the screen. The hinges are made of plastic, they hold the lid quite tightly, you can open it with one hand, but you should be very careful.

The bottom cover of the laptop is also made of matte plastic, there are four rubber feet, which are quite successful in preventing slipping and vibration.

The main set of wired interfaces is located on the left side of the device. Here is: a connector for connecting power, D-Sub (VGA), Ethernet (RJ45), HDMI and two USB port 3.0. There is also a rather massive grille through which hot air is blown out by the cooling system.

On the right, we found a combo audio jack, an SD/SDHC and MMC card reader, one USB2.0 port, a DVD drive, and Kensington lock holes.

Communications

Atheros modules are responsible for all wireless communications in the G500s. The WiFi module (AR9485) supports 802.11 b / g / n standards, we did not notice any problems with it, the signal is confident both a few meters from the router and two floors away. To our surprise, Lenovo didn't equip its G500s with a Gigabit-Ethernet interface, but only with Fast-Ethernet (model AR8172/8176/8178-family).

Input Devices

Lenovo G500s is equipped with a non-backlit keyboard, the Chiclet keyboard type. The main keys are approximately 15x15 mm in size. The keys are flat and smooth, have a very short stroke, to press it is enough to apply very little pressure. During heavy use, there is a slight dent in the left side of the keyboard. These keys are suitable for everyday use an ordinary user, but writers and those who simply print very often may be dissatisfied.
It is worth noting that the keyboard in the G500s turned out to be much worse than in other budget models from Lenovo, such as the B575e or G580. The left Shift has a very limited length, like BackSpace, but the Enter key is large, two-level.

The touchpad measures 10.2 by 5.4 cm (4 x 2.1 inches) and supports multi-touch gestures. The surface is a bit rough, but fingers glide over it very easily. Multi-touch support can be enabled or disabled in the touchpad settings. The two touchpad buttons have a short travel and a characteristic click when pressed.

Display

The laptop display is glossy, has a resolution of 1366 by 768 pixels and a size of 15.6 inches, manufactured by Samsung (model LATLTN156AT30L01). The average brightness is 201.8 cd / m2, which is a rather modest figure. The contrast is not high, only 313:1. The coverage of the AdobeRGB and SRGB ranges is at a deplorable level, this laptop is definitely not worth buying for photographers. In addition, the blue screen is pronounced.
The glossy surface glares quite strongly in bright light, so the laptop is best used in the shade or in room lighting.

Viewing angles are typical for a cheap TN matrix. If the horizontal degradation of colors is not very pronounced, then in the vertical plane the colors change dramatically and it is impossible to make out anything with a strong screen deviation.

Performance

In the G500s line of laptops, the manufacturer offers several configurations aimed at office use. For these devices, the main areas of application are Internet surfing, Skype communication, work with text editors and view content. If you want to run games on a laptop, then it is better to choose a configuration with a discrete GeForce graphics card GT720M. Our laptop model is currently one of the cheapest and costs about 16-17 thousand rubles. Other models differ in processor performance (from Pentium to Core i7), capacity hard drive, RAM and GPU. At the moment, the cheapest version with discrete graphics and more or less productive Core processor i3-2328M costs about 23 thousand rubles.

CPU.

The G500s is powered by a dual-core Intel Pentium 2020M (Ivy Bridge) processor clocked at 2.4 GHz, turbo boost not provided. Thanks to architectural improvements, this processor should outperform its predecessor Pentium B980 (Sandy Bridge).
Testing the processor in the Cinebench utility showed quite tolerable results, it turned out that the Pentium 2020M in this case can even compete with a laptop with a Core i3 2328M processor, this is possible due to the higher clock frequency of the 2020M.

Overall system performance.

In general, the laptop runs quite smoothly, which is confirmed by PCMark tests. You can further increase the performance of the G500s by installing a second memory bar and achieving dual-channel RAM operation. Having tested a laptop with two sticks of memory, we got an overall performance increase of about 4%.

Index Windows performance as follows.

Video card.

The laptop is equipped with a built-in Intel HD Graphics. Its clock speed is 350-1100 MHz and it supports DirectX 11. The performance of the HD2500 is, as expected, between the HD2000 and HD3000.
The 3DMark test results are quite expected. Lenovo G500s again shows slightly higher results than its competitors in the price segment.

Performance in games.

From given processor and integrated graphics, you should not expect any miracles, but still a few fairly new 3D games on low settings go quite comfortably. It is also worth noting that the installation of a second RAM module has a very positive effect on the frame rate in games. So in our case with two memory sticks, fps increased by 5-10%.
If games are critical for you, then you should pay attention to the configuration of a laptop with a GaForce GT720M video card, which costs a little more.

Battery life

The Lenovo G500s lasted 6 hours and 1 minute in standby mode, tested using the Battery Eater Reader utility at the lowest screen brightness and WiFi turned off. Under load, the laptop worked for only 1 hour 9 minutes, the load scenario was again generated using the same utility, while the brightness was at maximum and WiFi was turned on. When surfing the Internet, the battery was discharged in 3 hours and 7 minutes.

Verdict

The Lenovo G500s has decent performance for the price, decent build quality, no noise or heat, and a two-year warranty. The keyboard and display quality are not very convincing, but for a budget laptop, this is quite forgivable.

Finally, if you look at budget laptop for an office, the Lenovo G500s will suit you, but do not forget that there are quite a few alternatives for this price, such as the Toshiba Satellite C850-1LX or the Dell Vostro 2520.

In 2013, Lenovo updated its series of devices under the G. Updated line was designed to replace the inexpensive devices of office workers. One of the key gadgets in the line was the G500, which was later updated and re-released in a lighter and slim body and was named Lenovo G500S (which probably means Slim or Small). Let's take a closer look at the gadget. Will it have enough power for comfortable work and is it worth spending your hard-earned money on it?

Design and communications

The external design of the laptop is rather boring. The main material for the case is matte black plastic. The laptop has a strict and calm style and does not stand out in any way. There are no glossy elements, which has a positive effect on the presentability of the laptop. The inside of the laptop, unlike the lid, is textured in the form of thin longitudinal stripes. The computer is very thin and light. You will have to pay for this with the fragility of the case. There are noticeable deflections over the entire area of the laptop and squeaks. Distinctive feature case is its easy-to-modify and repair design. Since it is very easy to disassemble the Lenovo G500S, it is easier to care for and maintain.

Communication interfaces are located on two faces. On the right side are a Kensington lock, a CD drive, a USB 2.0 port, a card reader, and a combined audio port. On the left side there is a socket for connecting the power supply, a VGA port, a standard network port, HDMI port, two USB 3.0 ports.

Keyboard and touchpad

The keyboard is the weak point of the Lenovo G500S. The first problem is the mechanism, built on the basis of a rubber membrane, due to which the keyboard flexes a lot during typing. The second problem is cropped Shift key and Backspace, which will cause discomfort when typing quickly. The keys are flat, with a slight curve at the bottom of each. For everyday use of the keyboard, of course, enough, but journalists will not last long.

Under the keyboard is a small touchpad with a rough surface. The finger glides well, there are no streaks left on it. The touchpad recognizes the touch of multiple fingers at once.

Display

The device has Touchpad manufactured by Samsung with a diagonal of 15.6 inches. The display resolution reaches 1366 x 768 pixels. The aspect ratio is 16:9, which favorably affects the viewing of media content. Almost all YouTube videos and most of the latest movies support this aspect ratio. The display is built on a basic TN-matrix, which, alas, does not shine with quality. The color range is limited, the brightness is much worse than the competition. The glossy panel does not correct the situation, but only exacerbates it, adding glare and reflections when working in the sun. Viewing angles are not maximum.

Performance and Memory

Characteristics can not be called brilliant. This computer is suitable only for simple office work or chatting on Skype. The heart of the laptop is the power-hungry Intel Pentium 2020M chip with maximum frequency 2400 megahertz. Its power is enough for comfortable work with built-in system applications, but when running programs that require large computing power, problems arise, up to the system freezing.

Most of the time, graphics performance is handled by the built-in video subsystem, which operates while browsing, mailing, and reading. When you start games, discrete Nvidia graphics that support DirectX 11 are connected. The computer copes with simple games with a bang, but it cannot cope with AAA-class game projects, you can count on more or less intelligible performance only in games produced in 2010-2012.

Also in the laptop there was a place for 4 gigabytes of RAM and a hard drive with a capacity of 500 gigabytes. The volume is not the most impressive, but this is enough for the bulk of users. The rest can make an “upgrade” and supplement it with another 4 gigabytes of RAM, as well as a modern SSD drive, which, despite the presence of an old processor, can give the computer a second life.

Autonomy, heating and noise

Despite the fact that the "stuffing" of the gadget is rather weak and was clearly created with a focus on long-term autonomy, during the tests the laptop showed no best result operating time on a single charge. Thanks to testing, it turned out that the laptop is able to live:

  • 6 hours standby;
  • 1 hour under maximum load;
  • 3 hours in mixed use;
  • 3 hours when watching HD video.

A rather modest result, which will worsen over time, and quickly.

The temperature of the laptop is stable within 25-30 degrees over the entire surface, with rare exceptions. At maximum load, the upper left corner warms up to 40.

The noise level is minimal. Even when working with "heavy" applications and games, the noise level rarely rises above 30 decibels. It is almost impossible to hear it, especially in a working environment.

Instead of a conclusion

In general, the gadget can hardly be called successful, but if we consider the price as the main criterion, then the impression changes a little. Considering the low cost (from 21 thousand rubles), a lot is forgiven for this computer, and the reviews on the Lenovo G500S confirm this.

Pros:

  • Very thin and light for its category.
  • More affordable than major competitors.

Minuses:

  • Lenovo G500S BIOS needs updating.
  • Very weak processor.
  • Low resolution screen.
