Superbly implemented one-handed control. You can choose the diagonal of the control area that is convenient for you or turn on the Touch Assistant - an additional floating multifunction key.

cameras

The main camera uses a 16-megapixel module from an unnamed manufacturer. Art lovers mobile photography It is worth taking a closer look at the flagship model. The rear camera will not leave anyone indifferent. Examples of photos both under artificial lighting and in bright sun can be seen below.

The native application for shooting pleases with a large number of settings. Filters, blur, fisheye effect, face, age and gender detection are supported. And even - the elimination of flickering screens, and you can choose the refresh rate.

The flash is sufficient not only for shooting, but also for use as a flashlight. Maximum quality video - 1080p (Full HD, 30 frames per second). Front-camera allows you to take great selfies.

autonomy

Representatives of Xiaomi promised a phenomenal operating time of the device. In fact, Mi Max does not set records, but its results cannot be called bad either.

When playing Full HD video at medium screen brightness, the battery life is 10 hours. At maximum brightness - 8 hours. Half an hour of playing World Of Tanks via Wi-Fi reduces battery power by 7%. In mixed usage mode (with LTE/GPS/Wi-Fi enabled and medium brightness), the smartphone is enough for 4 hours of surfing the Internet and chatting in instant messengers, 1 hour of gaming, 3 hours of listening to music with headphones. If necessary, the gluttony of the gadget can be reduced directly in the system.

A full charge takes over 4 hours. However, the process can be accelerated. Technology Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 allows you to charge the battery by 80% in 30 minutes due to increased voltage and current. True, you will have to use a proprietary or certified Qualcomm charger.

Wireless interfaces and communication

Voice communication works great. The interlocutor is heard clearly, he also does not complain. Interruptions in work cellular communication during testing it was not noticed, the work protocol corresponds to the coverage areas. In the presence of LTE coverage the smartphone consistently shows good Internet speed, if necessary, instantly switching to 2G to make calls. Unfortunately, VoLTE, a promising standard for voice transmission in fourth-generation networks, has not yet been implemented in Russia, so it was not possible to test it.

Communication with satellites is stable. GPS turns on in 20 seconds if there is no information about the location of satellites and in 3-5 seconds if it is available.

By using infrared port and MiHome or ZaZaRemote (“Telecontrol Master”) applications, you can control home appliances: both Xiaomi gadgets and familiar TVs or air conditioners.

Results

Despite the huge diagonal, Xiaomi Mi Max turned out to be an extremely convenient smartphone with good stuffing and optimized software. In the near future, we should expect firmware updates that will increase autonomy. But now, taking into account the current exchange rate, this is a replacement for the Xperia Z Ultra.

The basic version reviewed in this review costs around $250 today. The flagship Mi Max (4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal memory) will cost the Russian buyer about $ 305. An intermediate 3/64 GB option costs $251.

The performance of the smartphone will be enough for another couple of years. In general, you need a phablet - choose Xiaomi.

With shooting in difficult lighting conditions, Xiaomi Mi Max 2 does not cope well. Yes, there is no noise in the image, but this is not an advantage of optics, but of software processing - and due to the aggressive work of the local “noise reduction”, the image loses much detail.

The front camera of Xiaomi Mi Max 2 shoots well – it is enough not only for video calls, but also for selfies.

There are very few models on the mobile market with a display diagonal of 6.44 "inch, in fact, they can be counted on the fingers of one hand. And if we restrict ourselves to this price segment, then there is no choice at all. The hero of the review, and his predecessor already mentioned in the introduction, Xiaomi Mi Max - that's all.

Lenovo Phab 2 Pro is noticeably more expensive than the Xiaomi novelty. It is offered to overpay for a screen with a resolution of 2K, as well as for a slightly more powerful SoC. However, the battery capacity Lenovo models less, and if we take into account the more "gluttonous" hardware platform, then the time battery life too.

for 10,000 rubles: a miser pays twice?

Do you want a lot of smartphone for little money? After all, the larger the diagonal of the display, the better the information on it is perceived. With such a device, it is more convenient to read, watch videos, play games or just chat on social networks. Budget "tablet phones" exist, but they are often one big compromise. We have selected the most interesting solutions for you.
Choose android-"tablet phone"
for 20,000 rubles: Xiaomi Mi Max 2 against everyone

We continue to choose the optimal "tablet phone", now within the framework of a doubled budget. They are usually inconvenient or even impossible to use with one hand.! The real star here is the recently announced Xiaomi Mi Max 2. But does it really deserve so much attention?
Choose android-"tablet phone"
for 30,000 rubles: retail against China

Many companies have ceased to pay attention to the market of "tablet phones" of the middle price segment. Recall that such models mean smartphones with large screens. There is no clear gradation, but it is generally accepted that the border runs somewhere around 5.5 inches (although many will not agree with this). But we still found a lot of interesting offers, so there are plenty to choose from.

Conclusion

The new Xiaomi smartphone turned out to be successful: one of the weakest points of its predecessor - the main camera - was replaced with a more successful module, which, although there are not enough stars from the sky, is capable of producing good pictures.

But replacing the SoC with a less productive one will not be to everyone's taste - after all, when buying a new model in the line, you believe that it will be at least no worse in performance than the previous one. Here the situation is different - the new SoC is precisely what is less productive. In everyday use, this is not at all noticeable, but when playing “heavy” games, it is quite. But the new SoC is more energy efficient, and thanks to this, as well as increased battery capacity, Xiaomi Mi Max 2 provides excellent battery life.

Speaking frankly, Xiaomi new belongs to a specific class of devices, and if you need a “tablet phone” with a very large screen diagonal, then the choice is not so great - in its price category In terms of price / quality ratio, the device has no equal. But the owners of the version of the previous generation should switch to new smartphone there is no point - the changes that have taken place are not so important.

August 14, 2018

This year, Xiaomi is holding some kind of crazy parade of presentations: we didn’t have time to really get to know one new product, as we are immediately shown the next one. And at the end of July, in this parade, the turn came to the largest Xiaomi model among smartphones - this is the novelty of the Mi Max series. In the phablet category, the fresh Mi Max 3 looks advantageous. Largely due to the fact that it has very few competitors: it will not be easy to find something with the same diagonal and at the same price. But in this review, we will prove that the new Mi Max should be taken not because there is “no choice”, but because it is a really cool device. Go!

Appearance

The novelty deserves to be mentioned in a separate block about its size and ergonomics - in this we are talking only about the design and arrangement of elements. And with the appearance, Xiaomi decided not to bother: Mi Max 3 looks the same as Mi A2 (only its dimensions, of course, are larger). But is it bad?

  • The display occupies 85.19% of the front panel area. But at first glance it seems that almost all 95%. It is logical - for the most important detail in a phablet, not a millimeter can be spared. The frames are completely invisible. And we also record a clear progress in comparison with Mi Max 2: the dimensions of the case remained approximately the same, but the display was noticeably increased;
  • The body of Mi Max 3 is all-metal, and communications are hidden under neat strips - no plastic. All corners are rounded, the side edges of the body are also rounded - the device is pleasant to hold in your hand;

On the left side there is a hybrid card tray: you can install two SIM cards or a SIM card and a flash drive. On the top edge, there is a 3.5mm headphone jack, an infrared port, and a noise-canceling microphone. And on the bottom end there are two grilles (behind one is a microphone, behind the other is a multimedia speaker), between which there is a Type-C connector. The dual camera module in the “traffic light” format is a typical solution for Xiaomi in 2018. This element also flaunts on the back panel of Mi Max 3, protruding slightly above the surface of the case. Above the screen of the smartphone are a speaker, a front camera, a flash and a single-color notification indicator. The control keys are on-screen, and the area under the display is empty. The novelty is available in three colors: blue, gold and black.

Dimensions and ergonomics

Of course, the 6.9-inch Mi Max 3 looks more like a tablet than a smartphone. Although you can’t call it compact, the characteristic “bulky” does not suit him either. This is facilitated by 2 factors: the aspect ratio of 18 to 9 (case height - 176.2 mm, width - 87.4 mm) and a small thickness (only 8 mm). The device does not crash into the hand and is very comfortable in the palm of your hand. And the fashionable, elongated 2:1 screen allows you to make the case as narrow as possible, which looks good and is correct in terms of ergonomics. With the thumb of the same hand that you hold the smartphone, you can reach the opposite bottom edge of the display. But, of course, not every pocket is suitable for transporting the Mi Max 3. Yes, and for a full-fledged work, you will, of course, need a second hand. Because you will not reach the top of the display without her help.

However, these are the features of the Mi Max 3 form factor. If you buy it, then you are ready for such nuances. But it was not without some frank miscalculations on the part of the developers. So, the fingerprint scanner is installed, as always with Xiaomi, on the back of the device. But reaching it with your index finger is not easy - you need to intercept the smartphone with your second hand. It would be correct to place the sensor lower. There are no complaints about the work of the element itself: it reacts unmistakably and instantly to every touch of the owner. The same claim to the power / volume keys on the right side - too high. True, you can “wake up” Mi Max 3 alternative way, using the face unlock feature. The method works flawlessly, even in complete darkness. Another drawback of the novelty case is that it is very slippery. Wearing Mi Max 3 in a clip case or a case (which, alas, is not included in the kit) will be calmer. The phone weighs 221 grams.

Display

The model received an IPS screen with Full HD + resolution (1080 by 2160 pixels). The density is 350 ppi, which means that everything will be fine with the detailing of the picture. The display is good both in terms of contrast ratio (1500 to 1, which is 1.5 times better than it was in Mi Max 2), and in terms of brightness (520 nits), and wide viewing angles are pleasing. The color temperature here can be very finely tuned for yourself. Alas, when working with Mi Max 3 for a long time, the feeling that something is missing does not leave. Firstly, the phone sometimes wants to be turned upside down. landscape orientation, but it is not available for working on the main screen (for videos, games and everything else - of course, yes). Secondly, for some use cases (drawing, notepad, etc.), a stylus is required, which is not in the box. But the overall impression of the display is positive. The screen is the main thing for which we love the Mi Max series in particular and phablets in general. Therefore, the Xiaomi developers had no right to make a mistake.

OS and hardware

Mi Max 3 works on Android based 8.1 Oreo, and MIUI 9.5 acts as a proprietary launcher. Not everyone loves this firmware, but with each update it gets more fans: Xiaomi specialists improve performance, optimization and appearance shells. So the software part of Xiaomi smartphones is progressing along with other components. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 chipset, made using 14nm technology, is responsible for the operation of the phablet. It consists of eight Kryo 260 cores with a frequency of up to 1.8 GHz, and Adreno 509 helps to cope with complex graphics. Mi Max 3 uses LPDDR4X RAM and constant memory of the eMMC 5.1 standard. The smartphone is available in two versions: 4/64 GB and 6/128 GB. We remind you that the standard ROM capacity can be expanded with a microSD card (combined slot).

Performance and benchmarks

In AnTuTu, the novelty is gaining 118 thousand points. In GeekBench, as always, we ran two tests: single-core (1329 points) and multi-core (4907 points). The model received a good mid-range chipset. The smooth operation of the system and the flawless performance of ordinary tasks are ensured, but it’s still hard to call this phone a gaming phone. For this, the third Mi Max does not have enough power. But in fairness, it must be said that the smartphone pulls out all modern toys, just in some of them you will have to set the average graphics settings. PUBG, for example, works on 5 points. World Of Tanks at max. settings with shadows and effects turned on, maximum rendering of details are also going well. At 40-60 fps. Sometimes there are subsidences up to 20-30 fps, but these are one-time problems that almost do not interfere with the game.

cameras

The novelty has three cameras, in all three cases sensors from Samsung are involved. Let's start with the main dual module. This is a pair of a 12-megapixel sensor with f/1.9 aperture and a pixel size of 1.4 microns, as well as a 5-megapixel f/2.4 sensor that provides portrait mode. We will not surprise you with a list of all the gadgets and functions that are available when working with this camera: there is an LED flash, and Dual Pixel technology, and video in 4K quality at 30 fps. Let's take a closer look at the modes:

  • HDR mode works just fine here. I pressed the button and immediately got the finished picture, no need to wait another ages for the frame to be processed;
  • For video recording, there are Slow Motion and Time Lapse modes;
  • The "Macro" mode pleases with excellent detailing of photos;
  • Portrait mode is not just for show: the background is blurred effectively and correctly. However, remember that it is not suitable for all scenes;
  • There are also panorama modes, Beauty-mode, night mode and a mode for group selfies.

It is impossible not to praise shooting in low light: forget about blurry, darkened, spoiled shots. All cameras in the new Xiaomi models can shoot cool in the dark. In other respects, everything is also excellent: the right colors, effective stabilization and good sound during video recording, high detail. The front camera of the Mi Max 3 is an 8-megapixel one with an f/2.0 aperture and a pixel size of 1.12 microns. Video recording is possible in 1080p at 30 frames per second. AI functionality is available for all cameras, which can also be called the trend of 2018 among Xiaomi phones.

Battery

The new phablet received a 5500 mAh battery. Impressive, although for such a giant a large battery is a must. What indicators of autonomy can be expected?

  • you can watch YouTube videos in 720p quality for up to 17 hours;
  • listen to music - more than two hundred hours;
  • You can play for at least 5 hours if we are talking about voracious projects at maximum settings. Something lighter and less fresh can be played for up to 10 hours without recharging.
Mi Max 3 is able to withstand two or even three days with an average load on the hardware. And if you load it full program, then all the same, the smartphone must stand for a day without recharge. A nice bonus is the Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging function. In half an hour, the Mi Max 3 battery restores exactly a third of its charge.

Other

Pleased with the support of a huge number of LTE bands: both the third, and the seventh, and the twentieth Band are supported. Those. with a 4G connection everything will be fine. By the way, the maximum possible data transfer rate in LTE on Mi Max 3 is 600 Mbps. modules wireless communication many, but among them, alas, there is no NFC. But there is Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac with support WiFi Direct, Infrared, radio and the ability to navigate using GPS and GLONASS. We also note the stereo function, the sound in Mi Max 3 comes from two speakers: the lower one (it is louder) and the upper one, conversational (quieter). But there is no need to talk about some outstanding audio capabilities of Mi Max 3.

Outcome

The new phablet from Xiaomi has drawbacks: the lack of an NFC module that is so relevant today, a “boring” design (because everyone has already seen it many times), not the most successful equipment (we regretted the clip case and stylus), and technical filling could have been fresher. But let's be aware that sometimes we want too much. With a Snapdragon 710 or even Snapdragon 660 on board, a new phablet would cost more, because the cost of production would increase. The same can be said about the stylus, NFC and other things that Mi Max 3 lacks. Xiaomi turned out to be a nice, bright, functional device with good cameras, durable battery and good price. The phone is clearly stronger than its predecessor and is ideal for those who are looking for a device with a large screen for multimedia content consumption.

Today we have another unboxing and full review smartphone from Xiaomi. This time we are testing a real phablet and the biggest smartphone of the Chinese manufacturer in 2018 - Xiaomi Mi Max 3. Despite its large size, the dimensions have not changed much from Mi Max 2. On the other hand, take a look at the image below. looks so small compared to Mi Max 3. That's because it has a 6.9-inch display.

Xiaomi Mi Max 3 also comes with a Snapdragon 636 processor, a 5500 mAh battery, a slot for microSD cards memory, a 3.5mm audio jack, and even a dual speaker. These features make it an ideal multimedia device. Well, let's start the review!

Xiaomi Mi Max 3: Unboxing

Xiaomi Mi Max 3 comes in a white box with the Mi logo on the right upper corner and large MAX 3 lettering at the bottom. On the back you can find specifications. Everything is in Chinese because this smartphone has not been released internationally yet.

Inside the box, you can see Mi Max 3 with factory films on the front and back, an envelope with a SIM needle and a user manual, USB cable Type-C and power adapter supporting fast charging 12V/1.5A.

You know, I don't see a silicone case in the package. Too bad, because it even comes with a protective case.

Okay, now let's look at the design.

Xiaomi Mi Max 3: Design

Xiaomi Mi Max 3 is available in three color options: black, blue and gold. As you already understood, I have a black version, and, in my opinion, it looks better than others.

The back panel is made of metal. First of all, this means that the smartphone does not support wireless charging. Antenna lines are located on the upper and lower ends, but they are almost invisible.

In general, the rear panel of Xiaomi Mi Max 3 is no different from other Xiaomi smartphones in 2018. In the left corner is a dual vertical camera and a fingerprint scanner in the center.

On the front of the Mi Max 3 is a stunning 6.9-inch display. The bezels are very thin, especially against this huge screen. Above the display, you can see the front camera, speaker, and flash.

On the top panel there is a 3.5 mm audio jack, a microphone and an IR sensor. At the bottom is a USB Type-C port and a speaker. On the right side, you can find the power button and volume rocker, while the hybrid slot is located on the left side. The slot supports two SIM cards at the same time, or one SIM card and a card microSD memory.

What can I say about the design of Xiaomi Mi Max 3? It is not much different from other Xiaomi smartphones in 2018, especially. I think that Mi Max 3 and Mi A2 have a completely identical design, only the large display of Mi Max 3 makes it interesting. So, let's talk about the display.

Xiaomi Mi Max 3: Display

Yes, the display is the main feature of this smartphone. It will be quite difficult to find a mobile device in 2018 with a similar diagonal - 6.9 inches. Full HD+ resolution, 1080 x 2160 pixels. Thanks to the 18:9 aspect ratio and thin bezels on the sides, Mi Max 3 is not that big and you can even hold it in one hand. By the way, the display occupies 79.8% of the front panel.

The main advantage of such a diagonal is that watching movies and playing games provides an amazing experience. As for the rest, this is a standard IPS panel with good contrast and viewing angles. The brightness is enough for outdoor use.

Xiaomi Mi Max 3: Performance

Of course, we shouldn't expect flagship performance from a $270 smartphone. And no need to remind me of Xiaomi Poco F1! This is a big exception to the rule.

Xiaomi Mi Max 3 runs on Snapdragon processor 636. This is a 14nm chipset with a maximum clock speed of 1.8GHz. At first glance, the Snapdragon 660 looks much better than the Snapdragon 636, but below you can see the AnTuTu results from the smartphone and Mi Max 3. The numbers are almost the same - about 120 thousand points.

I have a 4 GB model random access memory and 64 GB of internal memory. You can also buy Mi Max 3 with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage, but I don't think this is necessary because the smartphone supports a microSD card slot.

Xiaomi Mi Max 3 has GPS, FM radio, Bluetooth 5.0, dual-band Wi-Fi. However, there is no NFC, and this is a big drawback. Many people use mobile devices for contactless payments.

Xiaomi Mi Max 3: Software

We have Chinese xiaomi version Mi Max 3, but the seller is on Aliexpress already installed global firmware with Google services. When I received the smartphone, it already had Google Play Store, YouTube, Maps and more. In addition, there are some pre-installed applications from Xiaomi, such as Mi Video, Mi Drop, Mi Remote and others.

I forgot to say that this is Android 8.1 Oreo with user interface MIUI 9.6. The main functions are the same as others Xiaomi devices in 2018, so I won't dwell on it.

Xiaomi Mi Max 3: Camera

In category Xiaomi cameras Mi Max 3 looks worse than Mi A2. On the other hand, we can't talk about it yet because we haven't tested the Mi Max 3 camera yet. In the coming days, we will take photos in different conditions and add them to this article.

The specifications indicate that Mi Max 3 has a 12-megapixel main sensor with f/1.9 aperture and a 5-megapixel secondary sensor for depth effect. On the front is an 8-megapixel camera with f/2.0 aperture.

Xiaomi Mi Max 3: Battery

Xiaomi Mi Max 3 is huge smartphone, so it is not surprising that it is equipped with a large battery. Firstly, it has a 5500mAh battery, and secondly, it supports 18W fast charging technology. This is very important for such big battery. You can expect 2 days of battery life on a single charge.

Xiaomi Mi Max 3: Sound

Many were surprised that Xiaomi Mi Max 3 has a dual speaker. In fact, the smartphone has one speaker at the bottom, and the second speaker is used speaker top of the screen. Yes, it sounds interesting, and maybe even better than many other budget devices with a single speaker, but still the sound quality is far from the Galaxy S9, Huawei P20 Pro or Google Pixel 2.

Another advantage of the Mi Max 3 is the 3.5mm audio jack. You don't need an adapter to listen to music with headphones.

Conclusion

I have the impression that Xiaomi Mi Max 3 is the older brother of Xiaomi Mi A2. These smartphones have the same design and similar performance. On the other hand, the Mi Max 3 comes with an amazing 6.9-inch display, 5500mAh battery, and most importantly, it has a 3.5mm audio jack and a microSD card slot. Xiaomi Mi A2 does not have the last two features.

Xiaomi Mi Max 3 looks like good smartphone for entertainment such as watching videos, social networks and games. Below you can watch a video review of Mi Max 3 from popular bloggers on YouTube.

Xiaomi Mi Max 3 Video review in Russian

In all other respects, the Mi Max screen is good - very bright (although there are no 600 and above cd / m2 in it, at least in manual mode adjustments), the contrast is also good, and the colors are not oversaturated, contrary to the latest vulgar fashion. Tempered glass is durable, does not get dirty and does not collect scratches for no good reason.

The sound in the headphones from Mi Max is peculiar. Xiaomi got a good one audio path Snapdragon 650/652, and this could be limited. But the Chinese went their own way, so initially the phablet sounds dirty, inexpressive and generally worse than it should with such initial data. But in the audio settings there is a bunch of settings for Xiaomi headphones and equalizer.

To be honest, the presets for "native equipment" are not inspiring - for the basic Xiaomi Piston 3, for example, the installation from the Piston 3 Youth Edition headphones came up. And from "just Piston 3", judging by the poor sound, it did not fit.

It’s better to stop doing nonsense and not connect presets, but activate the equalizer and adjust the knobs specifically for your headphones. In this version, the sound will be quite good - no worse than conventional smartphones for non-audiophiles.

The speaker in Mi Max is of average quality, it was clearly introduced into the smartphone after measuring out the space for the battery and processor. That is, the sound is average in volume, but not painfully legible - it doesn’t come to wheezing or squealing, but in general, famous speakers in computer clubs 1990s

Iron

The first thing they love Xiaomi smartphones- they "sleep" in them powerful processors on minimum price. Mi Max was no exception, although the creators did not make it a flagship and limited themselves to "sub-flagship" Qualcomm processors about six and eight cores. Basically, after Redmi note 3 no one is surprised by such components.
