LTE is modern technology mobile communications, which is being actively developed and implemented by the largest mobile operators in Russia. Because of this technology is relatively new, LTE coverage in our country is on this moment does not cover the entire area. In this regard, many users want to know where LTE works.

AT this moment networks fourth generation available only to residents of the largest cities in the European part of Russia. In Siberia and the Far East, LTE covers only a few major cities.

1. Which carriers have LTE?

As you know, in 2011 Yota signed a memorandum on the promotion and development of LTE networks in Russia. It is noteworthy that initially, as the 4th generation of communication, it was planned to use WiMAX technology, but due to a number of undeniable and obvious advantages, LTE technology, which has the greatest prospects, came out on top. It is LTE that is actively and everywhere being introduced into existing networks.

The main reason for this decision is the unique ability of LTE technology to integrate into existing 3G networks. At the same time, the introduction is gradual and imperceptible to subscribers, since LTE devices are able to work in 3G networks, and in the LTE coverage area, you can also use ordinary 3G subscriber devices.

Nowadays, LTE services are provided only by the largest operators in the country - these are " big three”, which includes the following mobile operators:

  • Beeline;
  • Megaphone.

In addition, LTE services are provided by Rostelecom. Under the terms of the signed agreement, the participants in the transaction received access to the existing 4G network infrastructure, which was created by Yota. However, at the same time, mobile operators that have gained access are required to build a full-fledged fourth-generation network by 2019, and coverage LTE networks should cover almost the entire territory of the country.

3. Advantages of LTE technology

The main advantage of this technology is the high data transfer rate. At the moment, there are no voice connections in the LTE network, since in the first place it is an Internet connection, however, in the near future, operators will begin to provide LTE voice traffic, which is different higher connection quality.

Currently, LTE providers are only able to provide high speed connection to the Internet. This significantly expands the range of services provided by mobile operators. In addition, subscribers have new opportunities that have no boundaries. Residents of large cities such as Moscow and St. Petersburg already have the opportunity to appreciate the high quality and speed of LTE communication.

MegaFon has the best 4G coverage in Moscow among the Big Three operators, although the gap with competitors is small, Content Review analysts found out. The companies themselves questioned the methodology of the study

First in three

Content Review agency analyzed the 4G coverage of Russian operators"big three" - "VympelCom" (brand "Beeline"), "MegaFon", MTS. The Content Review study is based on December 2015 data from Opensignal, which collects information from users who have downloaded its app in the background. Analysts considered the capital region, limited on a map of 50x50 km in size - this is the territory of Moscow and the nearest suburbs, the author of the study and editor of Content Review Sergey Polovnikov explains the choice of such parameters.

The result of the study is the calculation of what part of the study area is covered by 4G networks for each of the Big Three operators. As a result, the leader was MegaFon, whose 4G network coverage density is 32.2%. “The company's leadership among the Big Three is due to the fact that MegaFon was the first to build 4G networks in Moscow and the region, which is why the company managed to get ahead,” says Polovnikov. As of the end of the third quarter of 2015, MegaFon had 6,000 base stations operating in the capital and the region with LTE support, according to the company itself.

The second place in the study was occupied by the MTS operator with an indicator of 30.9%, the third - Beeline with a result of 28.8%. Neither MTS nor Beeline disclose the number of base stations. Tele2, the fourth operator by the number of subscribers in Russia, which launched in the capital region on October 22, 2015, is not included in the Content Review study. “Data on the coverage of Opensignal service networks become relevant and understandable after about a year of measurements,” Polovnikov explained.

Within the Moscow Ring Road, all three operators show similar results, in the capital they are trying to provide maximum coverage, said Polovnikov. But outside the administrative boundaries of Moscow, carrier coverage differs more, as they pay unequal attention to one city or another, he explained. When planning the construction of its networks, the company relies on the analysis of "big data" in order to develop communications where it is really needed, Anna Aibasheva, a representative of VimpelCom, told RBC.

The Opensignal application has been downloaded by users around the world about 15 million times, the service does not publish separate data on users in each region. At the same time, only in Moscow and the region, as of the end of September 2015, operators served 41.3 million SIM cards, Vedomosti wrote with reference to AC&M-Consulting.

Differing in ratings

Analysts interviewed by RBC did not conduct studies similar to Content Review, and found it difficult to assess the coverage of 4G networks of Russian operators. It would be more correct to conduct such a study not throughout Moscow and the region, but only where people really live or are located, then the coverage rate from 30% would increase to 70-80%, says Denis Kuskov, CEO of the Telecom Daily agency. However, in his opinion, the results of the Content Review study are correct.

“It is difficult to comment on the study, since the methodology is incomprehensible,” said Yulia Dorokhin, a representative of MegaFon. She only noted that the operator's fourth-generation network "provides continuous coverage not only in Moscow and nearby satellite cities, but also in 80 other cities of the Moscow region."

Representatives of MTS and Beeline questioned the correctness of the research methodology of the Content Review agency.

“According to the description of the methodology, Opensignal collects information on coverage only in those places visited by its users. It turns out that where they do not exist, there is no coverage, and we cannot agree with this, ”said Aibasheva. As of the end of the third quarter, Beeline’s 4G networks were available to more than 90% of the population of Moscow and 25-30 % of the region's population, she said.

MTS representative Dmitry Solodovnikov agrees with Aibasheva. The Content Review study only takes into account data from a limited number of devices on which the Opensignal application is installed, and therefore cannot reflect network coverage by operators, Solodovnikov said. According to him, subscribers independently assess the quality of communication, “without relying on“ independent measurements ”, which do not provide real information about speeds. mobile internet or quality of communication. The 4G network of MTS operates on more than 95% of the territory of the capital inside the Moscow Ring Road, Solodovnikov said.

However, in assessing the best coverage by 4G networks in the capital region, representatives of MTS and Beeline disagreed. According to Aibasheva, it is at " Beeline » the best 4G coverage in Moscow and in the area up to the Moscow Small Ring zone: she refers to a study by DMTEL conducted in December 2015. An MTS representative claims that MTS has the best 4G coverage in Moscow “due to the use of multi-band networks.” “This is evidenced, in particular, by our comparative tests coverage and mobile Internet speeds,” Solodovnikov said.

Moscow in the lead

The Content Review agency, based on Opersignal data, analyzed 4G coverage not only in Moscow and the region, but also in the metropolitan regions of nine other European countries - Great Britain, Spain, Germany, the Czech Republic, Poland, Denmark, Switzerland, Hungary and Ireland. The choice in Content Review was explained by the "availability of official operator maps of 4G network coverage."

The results of the study showed that the coverage density in Moscow and the nearest cities of the Moscow region is several times higher than the coverage density in the capitals of other countries.

In addition, Content Review found that the official coverage maps of European operators and the real situation are "very different." For example, the Vodafone operator in Berlin claims 89.4% coverage, but research has shown that coverage does not exceed 11.7%. In Prague, the same operator reports coverage of 94.2%, but the study found that coverage was only 7.7%. “In Russia, operators exaggerate coverage much less than their European counterparts,” Polovnikov said.

MTS is constantly increasing the number of base stations, which allowed it to create a modern telecommunications network. To date, the MTS coverage area is recognized as the most extensive, which guarantees the availability of mobile communications even in the most remote regions of the Russian Federation.

MTS cellular communication supports several generations of networks, ranging from 2G to 4G. Thanks to this, subscribers can be sure of high-quality communication, both in their home region and beyond, as well as in high speed the Internet.

MTS coverage map

The most extensive coverage area is typical for the second generation 2G network. And this is quite natural, since it was she who was created first. You can make a call from a phone with an MTS SIM card installed from almost anywhere in Russia. However, there are now fewer and fewer new base stations of this standard, while third and fourth generation towers are opening much more often.

The coverage area of the 3G network is quite extensive and covers almost all cities, even a relatively small area. In suburban areas, the coverage map of the MTS network of the third generation is not as dense as in the city, but, nevertheless, 3G is available to residents of many settlements.

As for the 4G network, at the moment only large regions are served in this standard. However, from year to year, the provider expands the coverage area of the fourth generation network by opening new stations.

MTS coverage map in Moscow

Networks of all formats operate in the city, but the widest coverage area belongs to 2G. Depending on the characteristics mobile device and settings, the phone will try to find the latest generation network. If the subscriber has a device that supports 4G (LTE), then he can use high-speed Internet in almost the entire territory of Moscow. By the way, in order to be able to use 4G, in addition to a phone with LTE support, you need to purchase a special USIM SIM card.

The coverage area of the MTS 3G standard is not as extensive as the second generation networks. This is due to the fact that 3G towers are located predominantly in settlements. When leaving the city, mobile communications may be interrupted. 4G network coverage is similar to previous generation networks. As you move away from the capital, LTE networks catch signals worse and worse. This is due to the fact that individual base stations they are not able to cover a large territory, and it is unprofitable from an economic point of view to develop a network infrastructure in settlements with a small number of subscribers.

Internet access zone

Many subscribers, choosing a provider, pay special attention to the quality of the Internet provided. Each of the operators makes every effort to make the Internet faster and increase the amount of traffic included in tariff plans. Along with this, the MTS Internet coverage map is expanding, but its speed is different places may differ. It depends on how busy the network is and what is the density of base stations. With the launch of the LTE network, subscribers of large regions have the opportunity to use high-quality high-speed Internet. Thus, while traveling around Russia, MTS subscribers can count on high-quality communications.

Coverage maps of Moscow and the Moscow region MTS, Megafon, Yota, Tele2, Rostelecom, SkyLink LTE are needed to help you choose the best operator mobile internet and cellular communication at our place of residence.

Very often, you and I have to look for a mobile Internet zone for better access with wireless network.
For this purpose, a unique 4G map of the coverage of the Russian network was created. Not a constant signal wireless communication often leaves much to be desired and many cellular subscribers get a lot of trouble with the constant loss of the signal.

Although the coverage area mobile operator MegaFon covers the entire territory of the Russian Federation, but this does not mean at all that if the subscriber is in any corner of the country, the phone will be in the coverage area of the network. In terms of scale, the MegaFon network covers a vast territory, but still not 100% of the entire area of the country. Each subscriber, for sure, at least once, has come across a situation when, while driving along country roads, he could not make a call due to the lack of a network.

What are the features of the MegaFon coverage map

When purchasing a SIM card of any operator, subscribers usually do not pay attention to the coverage area. The thing is that within the city, as a rule, there are no problems with communication. Of course, there are places where it is not possible to pick up a signal from a nearby station. These can be rooms located on the ground floor in buildings with thick walls, various gateways, some construction projects.

You should think about the MegaFon coverage area when changing your place of residence, and not within the city, but when you plan to move to another locality or go on official business outside your region. In such situations, it is important to know whether the network will be caught? As for large regions, then in this case you should not worry. But if you need to visit a small village in the outback, then it’s not a fact that everything will work out without problems.

When studying the MegaFon coverage map, it is clear that there is no network:

  • In a number of regions of the Far East and the Far North;
  • In the tundra and taiga;
  • In the forest belt and in areas without settlements.

The operator installs base stations only in those places where it is economically advantageous. The network may not be in those settlements on the territory of which the coverage of other mobile operators. It is possible that if another network appears, the number of subscribers will not be maintained at the appropriate level, and money and a lot of money will be invested in the creation of communications. This is the main reason why operators do not want to expand the coverage area of the network.

In many mountainous areas there is a network of two or even one provider - in some, the Megafon coverage area prevails, in others - another operator.

Due to the fact that the site contains a computer version of the coverage map that does not take into account the characteristics of radio wave propagation, the coverage area displayed on it may not coincide with real situation. That is, in reality, the network may be absent at those points where, according to the map, it is.

Internet coverage area MegaFon

In modern conditions, access to the network is important for most subscribers, so you should look at the map and find out the Internet coverage areas:

  • The 3G network operates in most of Russia;
  • The 4G network is available only in large regions: in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Orenburg and others. As for other regions, the 4G coverage area operates locally.

3G coverage

4G coverage

MegaFon was among the first to launch a 4G network in Moscow and the Moscow region. It still holds the leading positions, slightly yielding to MTS. As practice shows, it is best to connect to the services of this operator in the Northern, Eastern and Southern administrative districts.

These districts are leading in terms of average and top speed internet connections. But in the rest of the capital, the 4G network coverage area does not work much worse - the backlog does not exceed 1-2 Mb / s.

Where can I see a map of the coverage area

A map of the operator's network coverage areas is available on official resource companies. To view it, you need to go to the page "Support" - "Coverage map". This map will allow you to get a complete picture of the scale of the network in a particular region.

  • The 2G network has the largest coverage area;
  • The 3G network covers a smaller area than 2G;
  • A 4G network with a connection speed of no more than 150 Mb / s mainly operates in large regions and smaller cities;
  • 4G+ network with connection speed no more than 300 Mbps is available in limited quantity cities.

As already mentioned, the maps contain approximate data, which in real conditions may differ.
