Most of the devices currently being produced have the function of connecting to the Internet via Wi-Fi. Thanks to the adapter already built into the gadget by the manufacturer, the user can connect to the Internet almost immediately, as soon as he took out the purchased device from the package, for example, a laptop, camera, smartphone, tablet, etc.

You only need to turn on the necessary function and you can enjoy Internet surfing. But what to do when you need to provide access to world wide web through a desktop computer? In this article, owners of such PCs will find detailed instructions to solve this topical modern world question.

What additional accessories will be needed?

If the computer is not equipped necessary equipment to connect to the Internet via WiFi, you can equip it with one. Below we will consider the types of devices that can allow a stationary PC to recognize wireless networks.

Outdoor WiFi Adapter

Adapters that provide connection to Wi-Fi, related to the category external devices, have the ability to connect to a computer via USB connectors.

Sometimes such devices are equipped with a special antenna that amplifies the received Wi-Fi. The device is easy to use and connect, since you only need to insert its USB plug into system unit computer and install drivers for the adapter. The software on CD is always included with the instrument. Below will be presented step-by-step instruction for the following settings if you select the adapter as an external Wi-Fi receiver.

Internal type WiFi adapter

Connection to a wireless network of a stationary PC is often provided by another method. You can use the built-in type WiFi receiver by connecting it through the computer motherboard.

Distinctive advantages and disadvantages of external and internal adapters

The cost of these devices is almost the same. Software installation and configuration is also not very complicated. For owners of several computers, it is advisable to purchase an external type of device, since it can be quickly disconnected from one PC and immediately easily connected to another computer to access the Internet. However, an outdoor device takes up valuable desktop space, so for aesthetics and lack of space, it is recommended to purchase a built-in adapter, the pluses of which also include the absence of the risk of breakage as a result of external influence.

Wireless Source

Obviously, without the presence, near the location of the computer with the installed Wi-Fi network receiver, its source, and more specifically the router, it will be impossible to connect to the Internet.

In turn, himself wifi router must be connected to the global network via an Internet cable. Next, you can already turn on the router to distribute the Wi-Fi network to the PC and other gadgets.

Outdoor WiFi adapter installation procedure and subsequent configuration

The procedure will be described for "TP-LINK TL-WN721N", but all steps are similarly applicable to other devices of this type.

Stage 1

Remove all of the following items from the packaging:

  1. Adapter;
  2. USB cable;
  3. User's manual;
  4. CD with software.

Stage 2

Connect the PC system unit to the Wi-Fi receiver via a USB cable. It is recommended not to pay attention to the output of notifications on the PC monitor that the software for the equipment has been found and installed, since the drivers must be installed manually from the CD.

Stage 3

Insert the CD into the drive and activate the installation procedure. In the installation wizard window that appears, find and specify the model of the WiFi receiver and click "Install driver and utility".

After that, the installation wizard will guide you through intuitive menus, where the user will only need to follow the sequential instructions of pop-up windows.

When the procedure is completed, an image of an icon about the start of the Wi-Fi device will appear in the system tray.

Stage 4

In the next menu that appears, type in the WiFi access code and click OK.

Ready! Now you can turn on the browser on your PC and start active Internet surfing.

The procedure for installing the built-in WiFi adapter and subsequent configuration

The procedure will be described for "TP-Link TL-WN751ND", but all steps are similar and applicable to other devices of this type.

Stage 1

Remove the device from the packaging and disconnect the antenna from it.

Stage 2

Turn off the PC and open the system unit. Insert the device into the PCI slot.

Install the antenna back to the regular place of the wireless Internet receiver.

Stage 3

The process for setting up the built-in receiver is exactly the same as described above for the outdoor unit.

After WiFi settings router, many people have a question, but how now to connect an ordinary stationary computer to the Internet that does not have Wi-Fi. Previously, the Internet was connected to the computer via cable, but now what to do? I do not really want to lay a network cable from the router to the computer. After all, we installed a router in order to get rid of the wires in the house.

Yes, after installing the router and wifi settings networks at home or in the office, all laptops, tablets, phones and a number of other devices will be able to connect to a Wi-Fi network, "over the air". These devices have a built-in Wi-Fi receiver. And if you still have a stationary computer to which you also need to connect the Internet, then there are only two options:

  1. Lay a network cable from the router to the desktop computer. But, this option is not often suitable, because you don’t always want to fiddle with cables, and sometimes it’s simply not possible to run this cable to a PC.
  2. Well, the second option, which we will talk about in this article, is connecting an external or internal Wi-Fi adapter to your computer. With it, a regular, stationary computer will be able to connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi.

I faced exactly the same situation at home. After installing the router, all devices connected wirelessly. But the computer that I had to leave, I connected via Wi-Fi using USB WiFi receiver. It is about these receivers that I will now tell in more detail.

Connecting a computer to Wi-Fi using an adapter. Without cable

As I wrote above, for ordinary computers that do not have built-in wireless network receivers, there are a large number of network adapters on sale. These adapters are both external and internal. As for the prices, they are not very expensive. There are, of course, different models different manufacturers. But, the cheapest one will cost you about 6-7 dollars (these are devices of popular manufacturers). Tenda has inexpensive models. For example, I also have an inexpensive, external USB Wi-Fi adapter TP-LINK TL-WN721N. It looks like this:

Works great. You will need to prepare instructions for setting it up on a PC. By the way, many people call such adapters "flash drives for connecting to Wi-Fi" :)

How to choose a Wi-Fi adapter for a computer: external and internal

Let's see what these adapters are, and how to choose such an adapter for your PC. So, they are external and internal.

External adapters

Connect to the USB port of the computer. To install it, you do not need to open the system unit, this is undoubtedly a plus. They look like ordinary flash drives. There are small ones, there are ones like in the picture above, and there are also antennas. Those with antennas, I advise you to buy if the room where you have a computer is not very strong wifi signal networks.

If you are not very computer savvy, then I recommend buying an external Wi-Fi receiver. Almost anyone will do. The installation is not false: we connected the adapter to the USB connector of the computer, installed the drivers, and that's it, you can.

Here is another photo of external adapters:

Internal adapters

These adapters plug into PCI (or PCI Express) connector on your computer's motherboard. It is clear that to install such an adapter, you need to disassemble the system unit. Installation is also not difficult at all. They removed the cover from the system unit, installed the adapter in the PCI slot, rebooted the computer, installed the driver and that's it.

Outside the system unit, the adapter antenna will peek out, or even several. This is all for the best reception. After all, if regular USB the receiver can be connected via an extension cable, so that it would better receive the signal, then this will not work with an internal adapter.

Here's what the internal PCI adapters look like:

What is the best adapter to buy to connect a regular computer to Wi-Fi? Yes, basically, what's the difference. But for some reason it seems to me that external USB adapters are more convenient and practical. They can be easily connected to another computer. The connection and installation process is a little easier.

As you can see, connecting a desktop computer to a Wi-Fi network is not at all difficult. But, you can get rid of the wires. This is especially true if the router is far from the computer.

In order to connect the computer to the required wireless network and the World Wide Web, we need 2 devices that will be:

  1. Distribute the Internet, thereby creating this network at the place of its installation
  2. P surf the internet on your home computer

Connecting and installing a router

The main center distributing the Internet is a router (router). First of all, it must be configured correctly; without this step, sites will not open. So what do we do:

  • We place the router in the apartment in such a way that our network is accessible from anywhere in the apartment. In an ordinary apartment, almost any convenient place is suitable (so that it does not interfere), but if the signal is weak later, you will have to rearrange the device.
  • We plug it into a regular 220 volt outlet and turn it on by pressing a special button. (See instructions for specific model if necessary)
  • We connect a network cable from your Internet provider to a special socket. Also make sure that you have a username and password from your operator, because without this our router will not be able to access the Internet and distribute it to everyone. It is usually given when concluding a contract for Internet services.

The first stage is completed, upon completion, we have a turned on router, which automatically creates a network and you can connect to it, but in order to make it possible to access the Internet, at least you need to specify the same login and password from the provider in its settings (for example, Beeline, Dom.ru, etc.) about which it was written above.

Connecting a Wi-Fi adapter to a PC

Even though it's on sale now. motherboards with a built-in Wi-Fi adapter to which the antenna is connected, however, a desktop computer usually does not have any built-in wireless network signal receiver. Therefore, we need a special gadget - a Wi-Fi adapter with a USB connector. As a rule, it can work in networks of the IEEE 802.11 b/g/n standard with a rate limit of up to 300 Mbps. New models of adapters are designed for speeds up to 1300 Mbps (802.11ac technology).

Like any other peripheral device, Wi-Fi adapter needs to install special software and driver, which should come with it. They must be installed and after that in Windows in a special program - Device Manager, our receiver should appear in the " Network adapters".

When it becomes possible to access the Internet through a computer, it will not be superfluous to check for driver updates on the manufacturer's website. And if it is, then download it and install it. It may also be necessary to right-click on the corresponding adapter in the list and update manually.

Entering settings for the router

In the next step, we need to set special settings for our router. For different models, this procedure is somewhat different, and in order to do everything correctly, you need to find instructions from your router, which will tell you how you can enter it for configuration. This option is possible:

  • Opening the browser
  • In the field for entering the site address, we drive in something like "192.168.0.1" without quotes, there may be other options "tplinklogin.net", "192.168.1.1" and press Enter
  • A page will open asking you to enter your username and password. This is the username and password for logging into the router. They are usually indicated either in the same instructions or on the box from the router. Attention! Do not confuse them with a password and login for accessing the Internet. For example, it can be login: admin, passwod: admin or 1234. Enter ours and press enter.
  • Following the instructions, we indicate in right place login and password settings for Internet access
  • Specify the settings for the wireless network. At this stage, you need to come up with your own password, which will be used to connect a PC and other devices to Wi-Fi

For example, for Zyxel models go to the “Internet” tab, find the “PPPoE / VPN” parameter and click on the “Add connection” button.

In the "Connection settings" window, make sure that this compound activated and used to access the Internet. You must specify PPPoE as the protocol type. The fields “Username” and “Password” indicate the data provided by the provider in the contract for connecting to the Internet. Usually the IP address from the provider is issued automatically.

If everything is done correctly, then the corresponding web space access profile will be added in the “Connections” tab. After that, the network web can be used by any device connected to the access point of the network.

After setting up the adapter in Windows, the corresponding wireless network icon will appear on the bottom right, by clicking on which you can find our network and connect to it by entering the password created in the previous step.

It should also be noted that the configuration can also be performed by wire by connecting the router to the PC with the network cable that comes with the kit. The process itself, described above, will not differ.

Most routers support the WPS function - quick setup wireless connection . On the adapter itself there is a special button for this.

Using the proprietary software for the Wi-Fi adapter, you can easily connect to the router by activating the WPS function. To do this, you just need to press the button on the adapter, and then immediately the same WPS button on the access point.

Some problems connecting a computer to Wi-Fi

Sometimes there are problems connecting the computer to the router. We find the list of connected devices in the corresponding parameters of the router, for example, in the “System Monitor”. Here we pay attention to the current connection speed.

If the connection speed is significantly different from that stated in the instructions, then it is advisable to increase it. This is done in the submenu, which is responsible for the Wi-Fi network.

WiFi may be interfered with by other devices, such as a keyboard or wireless headphones. Therefore, you can try to change the channel number on which data is transmitted. If the computer is far from the access point, then it is necessary to increase the signal strength to 75 - 100%.

You can also bring the WiFi adapter as close as possible to the router when USB help extension cable that comes with the kit.

To improve the speed of your Wi-Fi network, you need to constantly monitor updates software the Internet center itself, since now it is available directly through the monitoring panel without going to the manufacturer's website.

Mobile technology has completely changed our lives. With their introduction, the need for wireless networks arose. Strictly following the instructions on the router and adapter, you can achieve comfortable work from any phone, tablet or computer. A personal computer is a stationary device, therefore, for maximum connection speed, it is necessary that the Wi-Fi receiver connected to it has a sufficient level of reception from the router.

To begin with, let's discuss, why do we actually need this WiFi? Is it worth joining at all? And I'll tell you what it's worth! WiFi currently solves several problems at once. The first is, of course, getting rid of long and always tangled wires that get in the way. Agree, it's nice when there are no heaps of wires under your feet that constantly interfere with you and your children. Honestly, I don’t know what I would do without Wi-Fi, now my daughter, at her 9 months old, strives to tear something off.

Secondly, only thanks to WiFi in one apartment, it is now possible to connect to the Internet simultaneously from several devices. So, for example, my wife is reading a book via the Internet on a laptop, when I turned on YouTube on mine and safely watch videos, while another computer downloads the necessary files. I also very often use WiFi to access the Internet through a tablet and cell phones. Agree, convenient!

Everyone is always comfortable, and this, of course, is only a plus! Today I want to touch on a topic that is of interest to many users, because by default, when buying a computer, a Wi-Fi adapter is not included. The question is what to do then? After all, he does not have a built-in WiFi adapter, which all modern mobile devices and laptops can boast of.

In this situation, you will need to buy a Wi-Fi adapter. They are of two types, which are presented below:

ExternalWiFiadapters. In appearance, they look like a regular USB drive (in common people - a flash drive), but, as I said earlier, they can receive a WiFi signal. You can buy such a thing even for 300-400 rubles, if you search well. It connects to the computer via a regular USB connector, or using a USB cable (if you want to place it in a specific place), the end of which is inserted into the above connector, and the other end is intended for inserting flash drives, or in our case, WiFi receivers .

InternalWiFiadapters. To connect such a device to a computer, you will have to disassemble the computer a little, but it connects very easily, I’ll tell you more below.

We will have to open the system unit and place it there. This type of receiver is much larger than the ones we discussed just above.

By the way, many asked that they want to switch to Wi-Fi, but they are afraid that there will be problems with the Internet or the speed will be lower when downloading files. The answer is no. On Wi-Fi adapters, they are written throughput. For example, your Internet speed is 1 MB per second, and Wi-Fi says up to 54 MB per second. From these figures it follows that your Internet will not slow down, because the bandwidth of the adapter is much higher.

Let's first go from easy to more complex, namely, we will figure out how to connect WiFi to a computer using an external receiver as an example. To go directly to the connection procedure itself, first we will decide what we need for this, a signal receiver, as well as a little care and a maximum of 20 minutes of free time.

How Wi-Fi is connected

First of all, we connect our WiFi signal receiver to the computer via USB. Remember that I use an external one, if you have an internal one, then it must be connected directly to the motherboard in the appropriate connector.

As you can see, it is not quite large, as it may seem to some, when buying online. Slightly larger than a regular flash drive, although there are even smaller ones.

Next, install the drivers from the disk that came with the kit. I won't focus on that. Just follow the installation wizard instructions that will appear on the monitor screen. Usually, you need to select your adapter, since the disk may contain drivers not only for your Wi-Fi. During the installation of the driver, a warning may appear in which you select "Install this driver software anyway".

Follow the next steps with the installation wizard. Next, next and so on ;).

To get around various incidents that can occur when connecting to the Internet, go to "Change adapter settings" and disable all active connections.

In the screenshot below, you can see that I am using the WiFi that is built into the laptop.

I click on the only active connection " Wireless network connection" right click mouse and select Disable.

Now I have no Internet, but we will fix it using an external wi-fi adapter. By the way, my wi-fi adapter does not require a disk, I just plug it in and it starts working right away.

So, I plug it into the USB connector.

Now I have to wait a bit, after which I will be notified in the tray that it is installed and ready to go. To make sure the driver is installed, right-click on "Computer" and select "Properties".

Select Device Manager.

In the window that opens, click " Network adapters”, then a list of devices will appear. As you can see here is my Wi-Fi, model D-lick Wirelless G DWA-110 USB. So the installation was successful, now you can use the Internet.

Connecting a computer to Wi-Fi using an external adapter

You can use external Wi-Fi adapters to connect your computer to Wi-Fi. Such adapters are connected using. Thanks to using USB to connect such a Wi-Fi adapter, there is no need to disassemble the system unit. In addition, external WiFi adapters with USB connection can also be used with laptops. For example, in order to provide a higher connection speed or replace a faulty one.

For example, consider a Wi-Fi adapter ASUS USB-AC56. This adapter is very similar to regular flash drive. On one side of the adapter is USB, and on the other side there is a socket for WiFi connections antennas.

This WiFi The adapter supports 802.11ac connectivity. The manufacturer claims top speed connections up to 867 Mbps. In real tests, this adapter shows data transfer rates up to 25 MB / s, that is, up to 200 Mbps.

Connecting a computer to Wi-Fi using an internal adapter

In addition to external Wi-Fi adapters, you can also use internal adapters to connect your computer to a Wi-Fi network. Internal Wi-Fi adapters have several advantages over their external counterparts:

  • Internal adapters do not take up a USB port;
  • For the same price, internal adapters offer faster connection speeds;

To connect to, PCI or x1 interfaces are used. Therefore, when buying an internal Wi-Fi adapter, you need to make sure that your motherboard supports the interface that the adapter you choose uses. Otherwise, you will not be able to connect it.

For example, consider an internal Wi-Fi adapter ASUS PCE-AC68. This Wi-Fi adapter connects to PCI interface Express x1. Its entire upper part is covered by a large heatsink that protects the components from overheating.

On the outer panel of the adapter there are three connectors for connecting Wi-Fi antennas. This Wi-Fi adapter supports 802.11ac connectivity. The manufacturer claims a maximum connection speed of up to 1900 Mbps. In real testing, the data transfer rate using this adapter reaches 93 MB / s (or 744 Mbps).

Connecting a Computer to Wi-Fi Using a Motherboard Replacement

There are also motherboards with a Wi-Fi adapter. So, if you do not know how to connect your computer to Wi-Fi, then the problem can be solved by replacing the motherboard.

Unfortunately, built-in Wi-Fi adapters are currently only available on compact boards, as well as on expensive top-level motherboards. Therefore, replacement will be the most expensive option for you to connect your computer to Wi-Fi. In addition, replacing the motherboard is a rather troublesome business. That's why this option looks completely uninteresting.

Wi-Fi routers are an indispensable thing in the life of a modern person. Savings on tariffs, using the Internet from several devices at once and the absence of annoying wires made them welcome guests in all homes. The problem can only arise when connecting to a stationary computer that does not know how to work with wireless networks.

You should not despair and call a computer specialist: you can connect your computer to Wi-Fi on your own. There are three simple and understandable ways to install Wi-Fi on a PC, which will be discussed in this article.

Method One: Using an External Adapter

To connect to Wi-Fi using an external adapter, you first need to purchase this device. This is a compact device that connects to a PC via a USB input, and looks like a USB flash drive or mobile modem. On the side, a Wi-Fi antenna is connected to it, the task of which is to catch the signal of the router. And also there can be two antennas.

An external adapter for connecting to Wi-Fi looks like this:

In order to configure the adapter and activate Wi-Fi on a PC, you will need to perform the following sequence of actions:

  1. Connect the adapter to the computer via the USB input, connect the antenna to it. Wait for a message about the successful installation of the drivers.
  2. Insert the driver disk for the device into the PC drive, start the installation. Click "Next" until the installation begins, ignoring possible messages about an unknown driver manufacturer.
  3. When the drivers are installed, the wireless Internet icon will be displayed on the taskbar. Click on it to select the required network and enter the password.

Video review of mini USB adapter:

If you have Windows XP installed, then the icon will not appear, and you will need to find wifi network manually. To do this, go to the "Network Connections" tab, using the RMB, select the "View available wireless networks" item. You will see a list of networks in which you need to find the one you need and enter a password for it. It looks like this:

As you can see, setting up an external adapter is a simple task that even a beginner can handle.

Method two: using an internal adapter

With an internal adapter, the situation is somewhat more complicated. To install this device, you will need to disassemble the system unit, which can scare an inexperienced user. But you should not be afraid: it is much easier than it might seem at first glance.

The internal adapter connects to the motherboard via a dedicated PCI slot. Outwardly, it looks like this:

To properly install Wi-Fi on your computer using an internal adapter, you need to follow these step-by-step steps:

After the external adapter is installed on a desktop computer, it will need to be configured. To do this, you will have to repeat the steps used in the first method: install drivers for the device, wait for the icon to appear, or find the right one. wireless network manually, enter the password.

Video to help you choose between 2 types of adapter:

After completing all these steps, the Internet without a wire should work.

Method Three: Using a Router

Another way to connect a desktop computer to Wi-Fi is to use a router (router). For this method, you will need a stable router and a cable to connect to a PC.

This video will help you understand the Internet equipment:

As you can see, connecting a PC to the Internet without a cable is a simple task. Wireless connection very convenient, and to set it up yourself, you just need to spend a little time studying the instructions.
