Probably, everyone is familiar with the situation when a scan of a document, for example, the pages of a book, needs to be converted into printed text. For this there are special programs, but most of them are very little known. Everyone knows, perhaps, only ABBYY FineReader. Indeed, FineReader is beyond competition. it the best program for scanning and text recognition in Russian, however, it is available exclusively in paid versions and is very expensive. How many are ready to pay almost 7,000 rubles for the most budget license if they are going to process one or two books a year?

If you consider the purchase of an expensive commercial product unjustified, why not use analogues, among which there are free ones? Yes, they are not so rich in functions, but they cope quite successfully with many tasks that, according to many, only FineReader is “too tough”. So let's take a look at a few alternatives available. And at the same time, let's see how they differ from the generally accepted standard.

To compare other programs with ABBYY FineReader, let's find out why it is so good. Here is a list of its main features:

  • Working with photographs, scans and paper documents.
  • Editing the content of pdf files - text, individual blocks, interactive elements and more.
  • Convert pdf to Microsoft Word format and vice versa. Create pdf files from any text documents.
  • Compare the contents of documents in 35 languages, such as scanned paper and electronic (not in all editions).
  • Recognition and conversion of scanned texts, tables, mathematical formulas.
  • Automatic execution routine operations (not in all editions).
  • Support for 192 national alphabets.
  • Check spelling of recognized text in Russian, Ukrainian and 46 other languages.
  • Support for 10 graphic and 10 text input file formats, not counting pdf.
  • Saving files in graphic and text formats, and also in the form e-books EPUB and FB2.
  • Reading barcodes.
  • Interface in 20 languages, including Russian and Ukrainian.
  • Support for most existing scanner models.

The capabilities of the program are great, but for home users who do not process documents in industrial volumes, they are redundant. However, for those who need to recognize only a few pages, ABBYY provides services for free - through the FineReaderOnline web service. After registration, processing of 10 pages of scanned or photographed text is available, in the future - 5 pages per month. More - for a fee.

The cost of the most inexpensive FineReader license for installation on a computer is 6990 rubles (Standard version).

A tiny and extremely simple free utility, of course, is not able to compete with the monster, but it solves the main task - the recognition of scanned text, as it should be. Moreover, for this it does not even require installation on a PC (portable). And it is controlled by only three buttons.

To recognize text using WinScan2PDF, click "Select source" and select the connected scanner (the program, unfortunately, does not work with ready-made files). Place a document in the scanner and click "Scan". If you want to cancel the operation, click Cancel. That's all the instructions.

The utility supports 23 languages, including Russian, and works with multi-page files. The finished result is saved in pdf format, the scanned document is saved in jpg.

Web service Free-OCR.com

Free-OCR.com (OCR - Optical character recognition, optical character recognition) is a free Internet service for recognizing scanned or photographed texts saved in graphic image format (jpg, gif, tiff, bmp) or pdf. Supports 29 languages, including Russian and Ukrainian, and the user can choose not one, but several, if the source text contains them.

Free-OCR does not require registration and does not have any restrictions on the number of documents uploaded. Only the file size is limited - up to 6 Mb. The service does not process multi-page documents, more precisely, it ignores everything except the first sheet.

The speed of recognition of scanned text is quite high. An A4 sheet with a fragment of a book in Russian was processed in about 5 seconds, but the quality was not pleasing. Large fonts - like in children's books, he recognizes by 100%, and medium and small - by about 80%. With English-language documents, things are somewhat better - small and low-contrast font was recognized correctly by about 95%.

Free Online OCR Web Service

- another free web service, very similar to the previous one, but with extended functionality. He:

  • Supports 106 languages.
  • Handles multi-page documents, including those in multiple languages.
  • Recognizes texts on scans and photo documents of many types. In addition to 10 graphic image formats, it handles pdf, djvu, doxc, odt documents, zip archives and compressed Unix files.
  • Saves output files in one of 3 formats: txt, doc and pdf.
  • Supports recognition of mathematical equations.
  • Allows you to rotate the image 90-180° in both directions.
  • Correctly recognizes text in multiple columns on the same page.
  • Can recognize one selected fragment.
  • After processing, it offers to copy the file to the clipboard, download it to a computer, upload it to the Google Docs service, or publish it on the Internet. Also available is the ability to immediately translate the text into another language using Google Translate or Bing Translator.

We must give credit to Free Online OCR for the fact that it reads low-resolution and low-contrast images quite well. The result of recognition of all Russian-language texts fed to him refused to be 100% or close to it.

Free Online OCR is, in our opinion, one of the best alternatives FineReader, but it only processes 20 pages for free (however, it is not specified for what period). Further use of the service costs from $0.5 per page.

Microsoft OneNote

The Microsoft OneNote note-taking program, excluding the very old and latest version 17, also contains OCR functionality. It is not as advanced as in specialized applications, but still usable if there are no other options.

To recognize text from an image using OneNote, paste the picture into a file (Picture - Paste), right-click on it and select "Copy text from picture."

After that, paste the copied text anywhere in the note.

The default recognition language is English. If you need Russian or any other, change the setting manually.

The quality of Russian-language text recognition in Microsoft OneNote leaves much to be desired, so it cannot be named full replacement FineReader. Yes, and it is very inconvenient to process large multi-page documents in it.

simpleocr

The old free SimpleOCR program is also a very worthy text recognition tool from electronic images and scans, but, unfortunately, without the support of the Russian language. But it has a unique function of reading handwritten words, as well as an editor that allows you to correct errors before saving the finished result.

Other features of SimpleOCR:

  • Spell check with the ability to replenish the dictionary manually.
  • Reading documents in low resolution and with blots (there is an option to clean up the "noise").
  • The closest selection of font and transfer of writing styles (bold, italic). You can disable the feature if you wish.
  • Simultaneous processing of several sheets or a single fragment.
  • Highlighting possible errors in the finished text for manual editing.
  • Support for many modifications of scanners.
  • Input formats of electronic documents: tif, jpg, bmp, ink, as well as scans.
  • Saving the finished text in txt and doc formats.

The quality of recognition of both printed texts and manuscripts is quite high.

The program could be called universal, if not for the limited language support. latest version only supports english, french and danish, others are not likely to be added. The interface is completely in English, but easy to understand. In addition, there is a "Demo" button in the main window, which launches a tutorial video on working with SimpleOCR.

The program of the Belgian developer I.R.I.S is really a real competitor to the Russian ABBYY FineReader. Powerful, fast, cross-platform, based on a proprietary OCR engine used by manufacturers Adobe, HP and Canon, it perfectly recognizes even the most difficult-to-read texts. Supports 137 languages, including Russian and Ukrainian.

Features and functions of Readiris:

  • The highest file processing speed among applications of this class, designed for large volumes.
  • Preservation of the formatting of the source text (fonts, size, writing style).
  • Single and batch processing files, support for multi-page documents.
  • Recognition of mathematical equations, special characters and barcodes.
  • Cleaning text from "noise" - lines, blots, etc.
  • Integration with various cloud servicesGoogle Docs, Evernote, Dropbox, SharePoint and some others.
  • Support for all modern scanner models.
  • Input data formats: pdf, djvu, jpg, png and others in which to save graphic images, as well as received directly from the scanner.
  • Output formats: doc, docx, xls, xlsx, txt, rtf, html, csv, pdf. Supports conversion to djvu.

The program interface is Russian-language, the use is intuitive. It does not provide users with the ability to edit the contents of pdf files, like FineReader, but, in our opinion, it does an excellent job with the main task - text recognition.

Readiris is available in two paid versions. Price Pro licenses is €99.00, Corporate is €199. Almost like ABBYY.

Freemore OCR

Freemore OCR - (! program website http://freemoresoft.com/freeocr/index.php can be blocked by antiviruses due to the advertising "garbage" built into the installer) is another simple, compact and free utility that also recognizes texts well, but by default only in English. Other language packs must be downloaded and installed separately.

Other features and functionality of Freemore OCR:

  • Simultaneous work with several scanners.
  • Support for many graphic data formats, including proprietary ones like psd ( Adobe file photoshop). All standard graphics formats are supported.
  • PDF support.
  • Saving the finished result in pdf, txt or docx format, and to export the text to Word, just click one button on the toolbar.
  • Built-in editor (unfortunately, the program does not save the formatting of the original document).
  • View document properties.
  • Print recognized text directly from the main window.
  • Password protection of pdf files.

At first glance, the interface of the program may seem complicated, but it is actually very easy to use. Tools are divided into groups, as on the Microsoft Office ribbon. If you look at them more closely, the purpose of a particular button will quickly become clear.

To download electronic document into the Freemore OCR window, first select its type - image or pdf file, and then click the corresponding "Load" button. To start the recognition process, click on the "OCR" button in group of the same name tools next to the image of a magic wand (shown in the screenshot).

The result of scanning English-language texts from both well-readable and poorly readable pictures turned out to be quite satisfactory. The only thing I didn’t like was that along with the program, all sorts of rubbish is installed on the computer - some kind of fake anti-virus scanners, optimizers and other unnecessary things, and without the ability to refuse them during installation. In a word, if not for this shortcoming, the application could be recommended as a good free alternative FineReader.

We present to your attention programs for text recognition and scanning, with the help of which you can optimize the process of digitizing documents, handwritten or paper books.

The applications we are considering easily convert png, jpg, pdf and “paper files” into a format convenient for editing in Word and other office software, edit printed or photographed material into full text.

Greetings to all readers and subscribers of the site! Every person who worked with printed materials faced the situation when it was necessary to quickly scan a document in order to further process it on a computer. Many people purchase paid utilities for these purposes, but it is not necessary to spend money - it is enough to install free programs for scanning documents. These applications will be discussed below. So let's go!

Advice! We have recently launched a project entirely dedicated to programs for document recognition and scanning, the project is located at the following address - softforscan.ru The pages of this site contain absolutely all high-quality tools for scanning documents.

PaperScan Free

PaperScan Free is a scanner program with good functionality. Supports a large number of scanner models, can open and recognize text from PDF documents (related article - programs for editing PDF documents), allows you to customize the scanned image (change brightness, contrast, saturation, add filters and effects, remove punched holes and etc) and save it to various formats, including JBIG2 (with very strong compression).

At the same time, the utility is not overloaded with unnecessary settings and functions, so any user can figure out all its options. It is enough to download a free program for scanning documents to Word and other formats PaperScan Free, install it - and you can immediately get to work.

ScanTool is a small program for scanning documents, which you can download for free in Russian without any restrictions. In addition to free and Russian localization, the utility has a number of useful functions: it can process a scanned document (correct brightness, convert to grayscale, flip the image), supports hot keys, saves the scan result in PDF formats and JPEG or immediately sends to print.

If desired, the user can install the utility or use the portable version, which does not require installation and is available for use immediately after downloading.

ScanLite is an application with a minimum of features. While other free document scanning software offers users many options like image editing and OCR, ScanLite only does one task - the actual scanning. The main window of the utility contains several items where you can specify the name of the document to be scanned, specify the save path and start the process.

In the settings, you can set the desired scan quality, color gamut and save format.

ScanCorrector - free utility from a local developer. This program allows you to quickly scan, correct, save in various formats and print documents. Simple and intuitive clear interface makes it possible to get used to the application even for novice PC users.

When scanning, the ScanCorrector program prompts you to select a device model, adjust brightness and contrast, set image colors. If you check the Fill box, the scanned image will fit the A4 sheet size. The result of a scan can be saved to JPG format or BMP, as well as send for printing.
An important advantage of the ScanCorrector utility is its small size (about 1 MB), as well as the fact that the user can download the program for free if it is necessary to scan documents and immediately start working, since it does not require installation. This saves time and allows you to always carry the program with you on removable media to use it at any time.

OCR CuneiForm

OCR CuneiForm is one of the best and most functional scanner software. It can be used as a full-fledged alternative to the FineReader utility, however, unlike the ABBYY product, any user can download the hp document scanning program for free, as it is distributed without charging money for use. OCR CuneiForm uses special algorithms to detect fonts in order to best recognize scanned text.

Among useful features Applications users will find the following:

  • support for network and local scanning
  • automatic detection of the area in which you want to recognize text
  • selection of scan options, import and export to various file formats - both images and text formats
  • recognition of languages, fonts, tables, symbols, footnotes, indexes
  • use of dictionaries, spell checking, self-learning utilities.

Thus, according to the results of this article, we were able to find out that there are free software for scanning documents, that do not require any material costs and have the same functionality as their paid counterparts. That's all for me, subscribe to updates (the subscription form is on the right upper corner) and thank you very much for the retweets and likes, I'm very pleased! See you soon!

Text recognition is a very handy feature. You no longer need to reprint large volumes of books and articles. For teachers, students and researchers, such software applications are a real gift. Consider different applications and determine which program for text recognition from a picture is the best.

How it works

Optical Character Recognition (OCR - Optical Character Recognition) is the ability to convert text from a graphical form (photo, scan, pdf) into a regular format. The converted text can be edited.
Any raster image consists of dots. The recognition software highlights the letters in the picture and translates them into text. The structure of the document is analyzed. Text blocks are highlighted. Then lines are built, which are divided into words, and then into symbols. Each character is matched against patterns. After that, hypotheses are made about what kind of symbol it is. Based on them, the software analyzes different options for splitting strings into words, and words into characters. The number of such hypotheses is enormous. In the end, the program makes a decision and produces the text.

Software Overview

Conventionally, all applications can be divided into three categories:

Consider a few options from each section.

Paid and free programs

OCR CuneiForm

Free program to recognize scanned text, which can be downloaded here.

The application was developed in 1993 by Cognitive Technologies. One of its main features at that time was the ability to recognize a mixture of Russian and English. In 2009, a branch was added that allows you to recognize a mixture of other languages. The software product was supplied with scanners and MFPs from leading manufacturers: Hewlet-Pachard, Epson, Xerox, etc. The latest version was released in 2009.
After downloading and installing, we try to recognize the text. Let's take this article as an example.

The program interface is simple, the menu is in Russian.

Click the folder icon and upload the image. Press the recognize button.

The result is not impressive. Multi-colored text is not recognized.

Despite the stated use of different dictionaries, English was also poorly recognized.

In general, a perfect photo can be translated into symbols, but the lower the quality of the original image, the lower the quality of the result.
It should be noted that this is the only Russified text recognition program for scanning, which we managed to download for free legally. All others at best have a free trial period.

RiDoc

A program for OCR from a photo or from a scanner with a free period of 30 days. You can download it here.

The application has good functionality and an accessible interface. To download the image, click the "Open" button.

Then the "Recognize" button.

As a result, we get the finished result. It can be opened in Word or OpenOffice.

Here is the result.

Also not perfect, but much more than in the previous case.
You can also apply a watermark or glue several pictures together.

ReadIris

Paid software product with a trial version of 100 pages or 10 days. You can download the program for the OCR scanner from the official website here.

The developer is the Belgian company IRIS, established in 1986. The main specialization is technologies and products for intelligent document recognition.

The program converts the image PDF file or a scanned document into a fully editable text file. Extracts text from your documents while maintaining layout source file. Has the following features:

  • convert Word files, Excel and PowerPoint to indexed PDFs;
  • converting documents with context menu;
  • quality indicator for imported documents;
  • automatic detection of scanners;
  • perspective correction module.

The program interface is Russified (specified during installation) and is quite simple.

We press the button "From file" and select our picture. The program automatically divided it into two blocks.

For recognition, click the "Open" button and specify the path for the image. The format is specified on the line above.

The result exceeded all expectations. Even the inscription has been preserved.

You can send the document by mail or to the cloud. To do this, click on the list above and select. Saved to file by default.

This program costs about 6000 rubles.

ABBYY FineReader

The most famous and promoted program. Download trial version you can here.

Paid costs 6990 rubles. The Russian development of 1993 is still considered one of the best in the world. Key features:

  • Recognition of tables and graphs, mathematical formulas.
  • View and navigate pdf.
  • Creation and direct editing of pdf.
  • Work with digital signature.
  • Comparison of documents.
  • Adding comments.

The program has many possibilities. The interface is Russified and accessible.

After pressing the "Open" button and selecting a picture, its automatic division into blocks begins.

Click the appropriate button to start the process.

Then it remains to choose in which format to save and specify the folder in which the document should be saved.

Let's open the result. As you can see, the recognition went perfectly.

Let's compare it with ReadIris again.

The first option (Finereader) is executed flawlessly. Therefore, perhaps, we give the palm to this program. They are comparable in price, so the difference of 600-700 rubles does not play a special role.

Text recognition from photo online

IMGonline

Online image processing service. Tools on the site:

  • Image compression and resizing
  • Cropping, cropping
  • Handling Embedded Metadata
  • effects
  • Improvements
  • Determining the color palette of a picture
  • Getting the background
  • Determining the percentage of similarity, etc.

A convenient site that provides many options for processing images. The interface is simple and clear.

Offers two programs. Let's compare. Upload the file and click the OK button.

Next, click on the link.

The result is not happy.

Let's try the second program.

Also doubtful.

Let's set an additional language.

We check the result.

A little better, but far from perfect.

img2txt

The program for OCR with photos online, does not allow scanning.

The site has been operating since 2014. The developers do not plan other services, except for the current one.

Select a file and click "Upload". Then click "Start Recognition".

The result is also far from perfect.

Сonvertio

A fairly large paid portal where you can take advantage of the following features:

  • Convert video, audio, pictures.
  • PDF conversion in Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Split PDF.
  • Compress PDF, PNG, etc.

The principle of operation is absolutely similar, but there are more settings. Pictures can be dragged.

You can specify several languages and the type of document where the result is saved.

Unregistered users have access to only 10 pages for recognition.
After clicking on the captcha, select "Convert".

Click download.

The result exceeded all expectations.

It turns out that even simple online services have the possibility of high-quality recognition. So Convertio is declared the clear winner in this nomination. But, like any great product, it comes at a cost.

So, we have considered various OCR tools. It turned out that free ones can help, but the quality remains not up to par. So, if you constantly need to translate text from print to electronic, you will have to fork out.

Have a great day!
