Bestsellers: smartphones in the first half of 2014

Zoom.CNews continues to acquaint readers with the dynamics of sales of the most popular high-tech devices, and today, in a new article in the Bestseller series, we will talk about the best-selling smartphones in the first half of 2014.

Everyone has tried to save money at some point. After all, we often buy used wheels from Germany, wait for sales in stores, someone asks the seller for a discount ... There are many examples, and one of them is inexpensive smartphones. Everyone has their own reasons for buying such a gadget. This is either a matter of money, or low requirements for the device. It used to be difficult to get inexpensive smartphone and get from him everything that could only come to mind. Not only were the devices not fast without it, but then a couple of updates completely destroyed the rest of the performance margin. But these smartphones could simply work as dialers, give access to mail and social networks. For some this was enough. Now the budget and medium sectors are filled with not only affordable, but also quite interesting devices.

Once I myself was a user of such a smartphone. I bought it in order to look at Android and see if the system is suitable for me. The speed at which the smartphone worked is a different story. I got acquainted with Android, at the same time I made a conclusion about cheap smartphones. For a person who wants to stay Up-to-Date and strives for the comfortable operation of a smartphone, an inexpensive device will not help in any way. You can, of course, change it every six months, but will it be cheaper? A lot has changed recently, including the “inexpensive” sector. Entry-to-midrange smartphones already represent a lot more. And today we look at the evolution of HTC in this context: what is the HTC Desire 300.

First Impressions

If you do not immediately look at the price tag, you may not understand that the device is cheap. The bundle is standard - pieces of paper, charging with a removable USB-Micro USB cable, a headset and the smartphone itself. The packaging is cute, it will not be a shame to give it to someone. After opening the package, the first thing I did was check the smartphone by touch. Such a plastic coating is quite standard for HTC and I personally really like it. But more on that. Among HTC Android devices, I have always had pleasant emotions from the first meeting, and the Desire 300 is no exception. And everything was fine until it came to installing applications. First of all, you need to install everything you need and try to launch some kind of toy, right?

Even in the process of installing everything, the phone began to stutter, it took a long time to install small applications, and this was alarming. And when it came to downloading Real Racing 3 content, a message popped up that the machine needed more free space(1.6 GB to be exact). I was surprised, because the smartphone should have enough space - the largest programs were RR3, Dead Trigger and a couple of tests (~ 300 MB each). Well, 8 GB (that's how much intuition suggested, but was wrong) was always enough for this. And here the user was given only 4 GB, of which 2.6 were occupied by the system. Everything will not be moved to the memory card. Also what, in RR3 not to gash? Later, after reading the Internet, I found out that there is an update that fixes the handling of the memory card and helps with applications. The smartphone does not report about it, if that. But it turned out to be updated without problems, and then everything went smoothly.

Design, buttons...

Externally, I always liked HTC devices very much. The Taiwanese managed to make balanced devices that looked good in the hands of any user, regardless of lifestyle and clothing style. The Desire 300 is available in two classic color options - black and white. In this case, only the color of the rear panel changes - the front side under the glass will remain black. Outwardly, this is a simplified version of the flagship HTC One, only in Soft-touch plastic. Looks cool, feels good, feels even better in the hand. Case dimensions - 131 x 66 x 10 mm, weight - only 120 grams. You can comfortably use it with one hand.

The case is collapsible, but the design is very cool. The cover is removed from the lower left corner, just take it and open it will not work. Ten latches hold the lid. I can’t say that you can find fault with something - there are no squeaks or backlashes. Moreover, at first you will not say that the cover is removed. The body feels solid, there are no pull-outs or any gaps. All this adds to the pleasant sensations of the device. And given its low cost, it is completely surprising. On the other hand, if the user frequently changes SIM cards, memory cards or batteries, there is a chance that the whole thing will be weakened or damaged. But I think this is a very rare case.

You won't have to get used to the location of the main elements for a long time. Top - power button and headset jack. I would swap them, subjectively, the power button is more convenient from the other side. Below is a small microphone hole and a Micro USB connector. On the right is the volume rocker, and the left side is empty. The front part of the glass closes only in the area of the display and two touch buttons below it. Above the display is the HTC logo (still under the glass), speaker and the front camera (already on a separate socket). The front and back cover are separated by a black glossy edging, all physical buttons are made in the same style. In combination with the matte plastic back cover looks great. On the bottom of the back cover there is a speaker hole, a printed HTC logo in the center and a camera window on top.

It doesn’t take long to get used to the location of all these elements. If the power button is not very conveniently located, then the volume rocker is where you need it. Touch buttons under the display are not illuminated. Traditionally, HTC did without the Menu button or multitasking. Access to open applications is carried out by double tapping on the "Home" button. It's up to you to judge how convenient it is, but I would like a third button. I would also like the buttons to be illuminated, but they saved on this, as well as on the printed logo on the back instead of pressed letters. Otherwise, everything is great. Simple, but tasteful. The style of the line was kept, the distinctive features of the design were not forgotten either. The question "Convenient / inconvenient?" the user must decide for himself, but personally I was pleased with the device both externally and in everyday tests.

Display

The quality of displays in cheap smartphones is no longer what it used to be. Now the colors are nicer, the viewing angles are maximum, the resolution is normal. These displays include the one in the HTC Desire 300. 4.3-inch TFT display with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels, which gives a pixel density of 217 ppi. There is a light sensor, and the brightness itself should be enough for a sunny day (unfortunately, this is just an assumption, sunny days were not found during the tests). Minimum value I also found the brightness to be comfortable. The colors are soft, the acidic Evernote and Feedly icons don't provoke.

A plus to the design is the lack of air between the display and protective glass. The touch part of the display accepts up to 10 simultaneous touches. I have not seen any misses or failures during the time spent with the device. The touch buttons also work well, but, again, it would be better to have three of them and backlit. Someone could say that a few more pixels would not hurt, but we must not forget that a smartphone is inexpensive, and I would not ask for more from such a device.

Cameras, photo and video

As usual, let's start talking about cameras from the front. This is a simple 0.3-megapixel camera, but with nice features. If there is enough lighting, then you can shoot a completely suitable self-portrait, and even more so, talk on Skype. Hand on heart, I will say that I use these cameras extremely rarely and would be pleased with the quality of this one. It's nice that you can set a filter using "native" means, and when shooting self-portraits, the camera sets a delay of two seconds by default. She can also record video - 640 x 480.

The main camera in HTC Desire 300 received a 5 megapixel sensor. Yes, I know what you are going to say now. But let's not compare with flagships, because we are talking about a smartphone that is one of the cheapest in the latest line of Taiwanese. As you probably already noticed, we saved on the flash. Of course, with such a camera you will have to rely only on good lighting. And, in daylight or a well-lit room, the pictures come out quite well. There are also filters and a basic set of settings. The video camera will record 800 x 480, but with a low amount of FPS. In a word, it will be tolerable for a beginner instagrammer, but on vacation it will not replace a soap dish. Among such cameras, it is average and you should not rely on its capabilities in any serious tasks.

Hardware, software and battery

Again, I ask you not to judge the smartphone strictly. Desire 300 is not the most powerful in its category. Moreover, if you remember last year's Desire X, then in terms of hardware, the 300 is the same, just with more advanced Android and a slightly smaller (!) amount of RAM. Don't ask me how, I don't know. Under the cover of our today's guest, there is a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Play MSM8225 with two cores and a frequency of 1 GHz, 512 MB of RAM and Adreno 203. There is very little storage memory - 4 GB, fortunately, a memory card (Micro SD) can be installed. Thanks again for fixing the feil with transferring applications to the card. In tests, for some reason, the Desire 300 scored a little more than the same hardware a year ago. But still, it is difficult to call it super-productive.

Android 4.1.2 with Sense 5.0 works with slight delays. Alas, but how active user I did not really like the work of the device. In addition to the fact that the interface itself does not work smoothly, there are often “crashes” of applications. It's a pity to see this, because it is HTC who manages to make excellent, in my opinion, software. BlinkFeed slows down, there are spontaneous reboots ... Such things spoil the experience of using a smartphone. Small games work well, even Dead Trigger is playable. Real Racing 3 will already be a bit difficult, but, nevertheless, you can play.

The smartphone does not suffer from excessive heating. Even during the maximum load on the processor, the back cover is just warm. And, despite the rather old hardware configuration, the smartphone does not differ in serious autonomy. The 1650 mAh battery will drain the device in a day, and if you often use navigation, it is better to always have a charging cable with you. But for people who do not torment the phone every 10 minutes, the charge will last for a couple of days, which, in principle, is quite normal. Desire 300 is absolutely not designed for an advanced user, and this will be quite enough for an undemanding user of his smartphone.

Conclusions and personal impressions

HTC Desire 300 is now almost the youngest model in the Taiwanese line (the most basic is Desire 200). Nevertheless, it is difficult to call it an average both in terms of price and characteristics. Yes, there are alternatives, but at this price, I liked the Desire 300 the most. Outwardly, it is quite beautiful, in the hand it feels almost better than all, even more sophisticated smartphones. Weak performance and a completely unremarkable camera is a matter of saving money on the device itself. In principle, when buying a device for that kind of money, a person should not think about a heavy-duty production component. I'm sorry, but you can't get a super-luxe feel from a cheap car, unfortunately.

I spent a week with a smartphone. And during this time I managed to like him. Honestly, if you do not take pictures of everything and do not plan to replace yourself with a smartphone game console he is quite good. For its $225, this is an excellent means of communication. First of all, it looks better than many others and it is a pleasure to hold it in your hands. Secondly, it has a nice display, from which it is convenient to both conduct any correspondence and hang out in in social networks. It is also a good gift for a person who is not at all picky about the capabilities of his own phone and has long been using a phone that has already seen everything. old phone. But anyway, it's a compromise. Those who are demanding on photography and performance are better off looking for something cooler.

Devices manufactured by HTC stand out among the general mass for their solidity. Even the outdated Desire 300 intrigues and attracts attention.

Appearance

Design HTC Desire 300 is quite similar to previous devices released by the company. The body has not undergone fundamental changes. All the same, the smartphone is made of high-quality plastic, without any metal elements.

The device is quite compact and fits comfortably in the hand. With its dimensions, the device weighs only 120 grams. Accordingly, it will be more than convenient to work with the phone with one hand.

The HTC Desire 300 phone is produced in the usual colors for the company, namely black and white.

The front of the device has a screen, a speaker, sensors, a camera, a logo and two touch buttons.

The back of the device sheltered the speaker, the main camera and the same company logo.

Bottom edge got USB connector and a microphone, and the top one has a headphone jack and a power button. On the side is the volume control.

In general, the design is without any frills. The body of the device is assembled very well, and it may seem that it is integral.

Screen

Installed display HTC Desire 300 has a diagonal of 4.3 inches. The screen has nothing to brag about. Resolution 800 by 480 does not add image quality. If you look closely, you can see the pixels. Smoothes the impression of good behavior in the sun, as well as the brightness of the display.

In principle, the screen is relatively good due to the use of an LCD matrix. Multi-touch and sensor response also live up to expectations.

The company also took care of the protection of the display, setting Of course, the quality is not up to but also acceptable. If you remember that the device was released back in 2013, then many shortcomings will be written off by themselves.

Camera

The characteristics of the HTC Desire 300 allow you to take good quality pictures. Despite the fact that the camera is only 5 megapixels, the resolution in it is 2592 by 1944. The photos will turn out to be slightly better than average quality.

But the video recording leaves much to be desired. The resolution is only 800 by 480, so using this feature will be one disappointment.

In dark places, you will not be able to work with the camera. The lack of flash makes itself felt. It is strange that the company did not attend to the installation of such an important part.

The front camera has only 0.3 megapixels, which is only suitable for video communication and no more.

Filling

The hardware is not able to provide proper performance. Although the HTC Desire 300 has snapdragon processor with two cores, it doesn't solve the problem. Despite the performance of 1 GHz, the device only manages a good interface, but very poorly ensures the functioning of applications, and even more so games.

One more painful place of HTC Desire 300 is 512 Mb of RAM. Even for the device of 2013, this characteristic is critically insufficient. Actually, you should not expect advanced programs to work.

The phone has 4 GB of memory, but in reality - 2.5, because part of it takes installed system. You can, of course, increase the capacity with a memory card. With it, the device works stably, without freezes and problems.

Sound

For smartphone with operating system Android speakers work great. You don’t have to wait for an amazing sound, but there will be no wheezing either.

The speaker will allow you to easily hear the interlocutor, it does not differ in particular volume, but it is difficult to call it quiet either.

System

The HTC Desire 300 is supported by "Android" version 4.1.2. For a device, this is a great choice, although most apps won't run smoothly. Moreover, there is not enough RAM to fulfill all the requests of such a new "Android".

A system update is also available. 4.3 will install without problems, possibly a more modern version. Of course, this will not bring any special changes in terms of performance.

Multimedia

Even a standard player will handle most music formats just fine. In fact, the smartphone player has a lot useful features, which make it easier to manage the playlist.

But to start the video, especially in HD quality, you need additional program. Demanding videos are played without incident. Even with HD viewing, the device can easily cope.

Battery

The native battery is not able to provide continuous operation of HTC Desire 300. The battery capacity is only 1650 mAh. Maybe with such a filling, such a capacity looks acceptable, but in reality everything is fundamentally wrong. The load on the smartphone depletes the entire battery capacity in three hours. In standby mode, the device can live for 15-20 hours. To slightly smooth the problem, reducing the brightness of the display and sensitive supervision of the working functions will help. In this case, the work can be extended up to six hours.

Price

The price of HTC Desire 300 is alarming - about 7000-8000 rubles. The device was produced as a budget, but in reality received the cost of a middle-class model.

Comparing the characteristics of the device with other smartphones, you can seriously think about the advisability of purchasing a phone. Devices similar in parameters cost almost twice as much. Taking into account the fact that the device is hopelessly outdated, the asking price for the HTC Desire 300 does not justify itself at all.

Equipment

The Desire 300 comes with a charger, a cable of quite good quality, instructions and a battery. The device is delivered in an interesting, rounded box, which gives solidity.

Flaws

Painful places in the Desire 300 are many. It's worth starting with a smaller one - a battery. The owner of the device will be very dependent on charging using the native battery.

No less unpleasant fact was the camera without a flash. Of course, the problem is not particularly big, but it significantly reduces the efficiency of the device.

But the RAM becomes the most painful place. Working by default, the phone consumes 200 MB, and there are only 512 of them. There is absolutely no performance left for applications, and even a solid processor does not save.

Advantages

Oddly enough, even in an outdated device you can find its advantages. Naturally, there are not so many of them, but they exist.

For example, despite its resolution, the screen provides a good picture. For 2013, there is quite decent protection for the display and its operation in the sun.

A dubious advantage is the use of not the oldest "Android". It's nice to have an advanced system, but to realize this plus is not particularly possible because of the filling.

The camera is also a plus. In the light, the photos turn out pretty decent. The camera installed in the device even now surpasses some budget models.

From the start, consider the design of HTC Desire 300. It is quite classic for this manufacturer mobile devices and is not much different from the previous models of this company, since high-quality plastic is already used according to the standard, there is no metal in the device. But there is also a peculiar plus of using this material - no doubt, this is the ideal basis for budget devices.

In relation to the weight (120 g), the dimensions of HTC Desire 300 seem to be quite overall -131.78×66.23×10.12 mm. That is, it is average in size on the market. Fits comfortably in your hand and fits easily into your pocket.

The colors of this model do not surprise either with variety or unusualness for HTC smartphones. Already classic. this model It was presented in two ordinary colors - white and black.

Performance this device predictably low. The processor works quite fast, there are no noticeable shortcomings in the processing of the main processes. But significantly worsens the impression RAM its insufficient volume as for the requests of modern users. Therefore, many tasks become difficult to accomplish. But with simple tasks, such as, for example, playing videos in HD format, the smartphone copes very well.

Regarding the screen. HTC Desire 300 has a 4.3-inch liquid crystal display based on the Super LCD 2 matrix with a screen resolution of 800×480 pixels. Not very impressive, but the graininess is not particularly intrusive. Due to this, the picture looks quite smooth and clear. Medium contrast, high brightness, which allows you to comfortably work with the display in almost any lighting conditions - both artificial and in sunlight, the image is quite readable. Brightness adjustment is fast, correct and accurate.

The touch screen of the communicator is capacitive, which makes it really convenient to work with your fingers. There is a multi-touch - a function of multiple touches, the smartphone responds to several touches (up to 10) at the same time. The sensor has excellent sensitivity, fast and sensitive response to touch.

As for photos and videos, HTC Desire 300 has two built-in cameras: a 5-megapixel main camera and a 0.3-megapixel front camera. Quality front camera leaves much to be desired, can serve for video communication, but not more than that. The main camera also does not shine with the quality of shooting, although there is an auto focus system. Unfortunately, there is no LED flash. Although the quality of the shooting is so-so, but various settings The camera has many shooting modes. You can choose a variety of color effects and shooting scenes, manually set the white balance, exposure settings, and the like. Such a function as face and smile recognition is supported, although this does not greatly save the overall situation.

But very well HTC smartphone Desire 300 with multimedia capabilities. The built-in speaker pleases with quality, clarity and volume. The included headphones are also good in sound quality. The following audio formats are supported: aac, amr, ogg, m4a, mid, mp3, wav and video 3gp, 3g2, mp4, avi.
There is an FM radio.

How budget model, the smartphone fully justifies its price, but you should not expect anything beyond measure from it. And the 1650 mAh battery will upset most buyers.
