Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3 appeared on the market a little later than the rest of the Pine Trail netbooks, and at the same time its cost at the time of the announcement was above the average bar for devices of this class. How did Lenovo decide to win users over? Apparently, the developers of the IdeaPad S10-3 decided to "beat" their competitors with an original design solution, which potential users of this netbook should appreciate more than ordinary offers from this segment. About what else is remarkable about the device, we will tell further.

Appearance and design features

The Lenovo IdeaPad S10 has already gone through three "revisions", and compared to the original version, it is the latest modification that can be called the most innovative. And not only because the S10-3, unlike the first and second reincarnations, is made on the Pine Trail platform. This device is strikingly different from its predecessors with a new elegant design. It is felt that when creating this netbook, the developers sought to make it the most visible among the homogeneous mass of other Atom-devices.

For the IdeaPad S10-3, Lenovo designers have developed a thin and fairly light case. When closed, the thickness of the netbook, taking into account the height of the legs, is 27.8 mm, and if only the thickness of the case is taken into account, then even less - 25.4 mm. In addition to the small thickness, netbook fans will obviously be pleased with the modest weight of the model, which is 1185 g without a battery.

To get away from the “pop” fashion for gloss, the designers cut the glossy outer part of the lid with a textured pattern, reminiscent of the surface of a chessboard with small cells. Compared to normal gloss this decision looks much more interesting. In addition, it is more practical, since fingerprints are not visible on it.

The only purely glossy surface on the S10-3 is the bezel around the display, which was probably chosen to match the material of the screen itself. The working surface under the keyboard is made of matte plastic painted to look like rough metal. Separate elements that make their decorative contribution to the exterior of the netbook are the touchpad and keyboard, but we'll talk about them a little later.

The appearance of the netbook is somewhat diversified by additional buttons located on the display frame. Traditionally, the laptop on / off button is placed on the working panel above the keyboard. But Lenovo decided to deviate from tradition and placed it on the left margin of the frame. Above this button is a lone indicator informing the user that CapsLock is enabled.

To the right of the display on the frame are two more hard keys: QS and Recovery Key. With the help of the first, when the netbook is turned off, you can run a lightweight OS that will allow you to use the browser and some applications for Internet communication without loading the main operating system. If the netbook is turned on, then by pressing the QS button, you can launch any application assigned to it. The Recovery Key button, as its name implies, calls the system recovery utility.

Built-in stereo speakers (1.5 W each) are located on the front end of the case. Like the speakers in most netbooks, the S10's built-in stereo is of little use. Its volume is quite large, but it only works with high frequencies.

Input Devices

The keyboard in the S10-3 is simply gorgeous, there is no other way to say it. Island-style keys separated from each other short distance, have small depressions in the center under the fingertips. The keys are pressed very softly, but despite this, the actuation moment is felt very well. The substrate is rigid around the perimeter and slightly flexes in the center.

The keyboard is well suited for long-term typing: hands do not get tired on it, and fingers do not start to get confused in the keys. long distance between the centers of the keys allows you to comfortably work with the keyboard even for a person with large hands. There are no complaints about the layout: everything is within the traditional limits. The only remark could be attributed to the design of the Cyrillic and Latin alphabets: many would obviously be more comfortable if they were applied in different colors, and not just different fonts.

The touchpad in the IdeaPad S10-3 is very reminiscent of the Apple MacBook's touchpad, with no additional buttons at the bottom, but itself being one big button. In a netbook, the touchpad is also veiled under one large button, but it is not pressed at any point. If roughly divided, then pressing the left half is similar to triggering the left mouse button, and the right half - right button mice. Only here in the center and at the top of the touchpad is not pressed.

Along the right side of the touchpad is an unmarked vertical scroll area. The IdeaPad S10-3 touchpad also supports multi-touch, but the feature is disabled by default. Working with the touchpad is quite convenient - no less convenient than with a traditional type touchpad. Although, of course, before technology Apple companies Lenovo is still very far away.

Display

The S10-3 we tested had a 10.1-inch sensor from Chunghwa Picture Tubes. Its resolution is standard for netbooks and is 1024x600 pixels. When you turn on the device for the first time, you immediately feel that the brightness of the backlight is very high and causes the colors on the screen to burn out, which is why they are perceived as pale and dull. The highest brightness is achieved in the center of the display: at this point it is 239 cd/m 2 . This value is quite enough to freely work with a netbook on the street. However, in direct sunlight, even this brightness is not enough to avoid glare on the glossy coating of the matrix.

The backlight uniformity is quite high and for this matrix is 87%. But the contrast ratio is quite small, only 176:1. Such a low contrast is due to the fact that, due to too powerful backlighting, the brightness of the black glow is very high.

The value of viewing angles is traditional for devices of this class: a narrow vertical angle (information on the screen remains readable without distortion within 20 degrees from the normal to the screen plane) and a wider horizontal angle (within 40 degrees from the normal).

Interfaces and Expansion Ports

Lenovo developers have scattered the ports in the S10-3 on the right and left ends of the case, for some reason leaving the rest of the sides out of work (the entire back end is given over to the battery, and the front end is too smoothed to the bottom).

On the left side are a USB port, an analog D-Sub video output, a card reader that supports SD/MMC/MS/MS PRO/xD formats, and a power supply connector. It is very correct that the manufacturer decided to place the video output closer to the back of the case, where the cable extending from it will not interfere with other connected devices. The card reader, on the contrary, is located closer to the front end, so that when working with memory cards you don’t have to stretch far.

On the right side there is an RJ-45 network connector, two more USB port 2.0 and a pair of 3.5mm audio jacks. And in this part, rationality is felt in the location of the interfaces: the connector to which the cable is connected for a long time (RJ-45) is located closer to the rear end, and those that are often used are moved closer to the front.

The S10-3 we tested had an Ericsson F3607gw HSPA module installed. This module broadband access for HSPA/GPRS/EDGE networks allows remote control computer. Even when the netbook itself is turned off, the module will maintain an Internet connection and, if necessary, can transfer the computer to any state. For example, if the device is stolen or lost, the user can block access to it and to the data on the hard disk. This remote control feature must be supported by the broadband internet service provider.

Battery life

Lenovo positions its IdeaPad S10-3 as a netbook with a fairly long battery life, especially for the battery installed in it. battery life- 7 o'clock. The capacity of the battery supplied with this unit is 48Wh. So if the model can really work for 7 hours, it will be very good.

Let's start with record-breaking battery life test results. In the Battery Eater reader's test, with wireless communications off and backlight at minimum brightness, battery life was 9 hours and 3 minutes. It is worth noting that with the minimum brightness that the adjustment allows you to set, you can quite comfortably work indoors.

However, the reading mode in everyday life is almost unattainable, so let's move on to more real simulations. In classic mode, at maximum brightness and with wireless connections, S10-3 was able to last 4 hours and 47 minutes. As for the actual operating conditions, it is in them that the netbook “pulls out” its legal 7 hours of operation without a fixed network. One charge of the standard battery is enough for 7 hours and 17 minutes to be able to surf the network via Wi-Fi at 50% screen brightness (more indoors and not necessary) and at the same time listen to music through the built-in speakers.

In general, such indicators of autonomy can be called very good. Of course, it was possible to install a more capacious battery in the S10-3, but in this case, the weight of the device would noticeably increase and the dimensions would change somewhat. So a standard 48 Wh battery is the best solution in this case.

To optimize power consumption, the S10-3 has Lenovo utility energy management. The essence of its work is no different from the proprietary utilities of other laptop manufacturers: there are five power profiles that allow you to optimize power consumption for specific operating conditions.

The power supply supplied with the device is very small and almost weightless (about 150 g). The cable that goes from the network to the power supply will weigh more. So carrying this tiny unit with you will not be difficult. It's nice that manufacturers began to pay attention to such a trifle as a power supply. About a year and a half ago, you could meet a netbook with a power supply, which is comparable in weight to the computer itself.

Heat and noise

The IdeaPad S10-3 is one of the quietest netbooks around. In idle mode, the cooler is absolutely silent. If it were not for a light breeze from the ventilation window, it would be impossible to guess at all that the fan is working.

The noise from the cooler becomes audible only during a sharp and heavy load or during a prolonged load on the system. In the first case, the fan speed increases sharply, but then, after a few seconds, it drops to a level where the cooler becomes barely audible. With a continuous load, a weak hum from the "propeller" that cools the system is constantly heard, but in an office environment it is unlikely to be noticed.

In terms of thermal emission, the laptop also looks very decent. Unfortunately, it is impossible to say that the S10-3 is an absolutely cold device, but nevertheless it does not heat up as much as some of its counterparts. At idle, the only warm area on the work surface is under the wrist of the left hand. Here the temperature reaches 30-32 degrees Celsius.

At the same time, the lower part of the case heats up more noticeably: in its center the temperature reaches 36-38 degrees, and near the blower outlet - 35 degrees Celsius. When the system is loaded, the case temperature rises, but not too much, by about 2-4 degrees.

At just 16 millimeters thin and light, the IdeaPad S10-3s netbook is the perfect companion for those who constantly move around the city or travel. Stylish netbook equipped with Intel Atom N450 or N470 processors and optional display high definition at 1280x800 pixels. The IdeaPad S10-3s provides a comfortable typing experience with a keyboard with modern design, the dimensions of which are only 2 percent less than the standard dimensions of full-size options.

Tablet mobile computers and so-called convertible laptops (or "tablets") have been around for a long time. A tablet without a keyboard, but with a full Windows could be bought even 10 years ago. It was controlled only by a stylus, but otherwise it was a completely full-fledged laptop. True, over time, interest in them from consumers, and, accordingly, from manufacturers, has weakened.

"Pills" - a thing more interesting. By and large, this is an ordinary laptop, but with a swivel screen that can be folded onto the keyboard. Their share is quite low, but there are plenty to choose from - many companies have one or two models in their assortment. They even passed through our test lab more than once, though not very often.

But in last years the situation began to change dramatically. It all started with cell phones, which will soon definitely be touchy for the most part. Now this “fashion” is spreading to more massive devices. Not the last role in this process is played by Apple, whose tablet iPad has made so much noise.

Well, Microsoft put in its five cents - Windows 7 is better suited for working with touch screens, including for controlling the interface with your fingers. Eventually touch screen began to equip ordinary monitors and monoblocks, and at the same time netbooks-transformers pulled up. Previously, after all, "tablets" cost significantly more than ordinary laptops, but now this is not at all the case. Moreover, very interesting and compact solutions began to appear. One of these is the Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3t.

Specification

The symbol "S" in the name of the IdeaPad S series, apparently "cut off" from the word "Small" (small) - a clear reference to the size of the mobile computers included in it. The S10-2 is one of the first netbooks based on the first generation of the Intel Atom platform. S10-3 received at its disposal the second generation of the platform, which differs from its predecessor. The "t" in the S10-3t is a clear shorthand for "Tablet" or tablet netbook. The difference from the S10-3 is only the swivel touch screen. We can also mention the IdeaPad S12 - a 12-inch netbook based on Intel processors Atom N270 or VIA Nano ULV 2250 and NVIDIA ION platforms.

In principle, the configuration of the S10-3t is quite ordinary, except that our copy is equipped with slightly more efficient components than is usually the case. This, of course, refers to the Atom N470 processor, which was introduced a couple of months later than the N450 and has not yet reached most netbooks. It is slightly faster in frequency. Theoretically, this will give some increase in the speed of work, but it is unlikely to be noticeable to the eye.

The RAM in our delivery version turned out to be 2 GB - the maximum for netbooks of this class. Approximately the same can be said about the hard drive - a 250 GB hard drive does not always come across in netbooks either, although recently much more often than before. So far we haven't seen any more.

Graphics capabilities are standard - as an accelerator, the Intel GMA3150 video core integrated into the processor is used, which does not have particularly high performance. But communication capabilities pleased. Not often manufacturers install a gigabit network card and wifi controller with support for the 802.11n standard. Yes, and Bluetooth is available, which pleases. We also got a variant designed to work in the Yota network, so there is even WiMAX support. Of course, a 3G module is not enough for complete happiness, but this would raise the final cost of the device.

By the way, about the cost. Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3t is available for about 18-19 for our configuration option and somewhere for 16-17 thousand for a slower one with an Atom N450 processor, 1 GB of RAM, a 160 GB hard drive and no WiMAX. Of course, this is almost the level of an average CULV laptop or an expensive netbook, but we expected such a computer to be more expensive due to its screen. But no, he pleasantly surprised us: in our opinion, an additional several thousand rubles is not a very big premium for such additional functionality.

In terms of size and weight, they are on average smaller than other 10.1-inch netbooks. The S10-3t is slightly stretched horizontally to make it easier to work with it in portrait orientation when the screen is folded.

Design and ergonomics

The design of the Lenovo S10-3t is very interesting. You can start with an unusually narrow body shape. Often, convertible laptops have a screen bezel, like a regular laptop. Immediately, it is made very thin from above, and they tried to shorten it from below, but due to the transfer of speakers there, this did not work out very well. As a result, small “ears” “stick out” on the sides of the netbook screen, although in its width it is no larger than many similar computers.

I really liked the decoration of the back of the screen cover. It is strewn with many multi-colored squares with rounded corners. Looks very original and new. The lid itself is black, with a glossy finish, but against the background of the "squares" it is extremely difficult to notice. The edges of the lid are smoothly beveled, its corners are strongly rounded. And in general, the shape of the netbook is not quite ordinary, a little "barrel-shaped" - on the sides of its body is arched.

Screen bezel and top row the keys are black, while the rest of the keyboard and case inside are white. It is also a very interesting and original combination, which we have not come across before. In general, I must say, Lenovo designers did their job perfectly. All the elements of a classic device of this type are in place, but in the details they differ from analogues, which in total makes the product very different from its competitors. Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3t cannot be called a fashion thing, but it's easy to look original.

As for the assembly, it is excellent. We did not find any backlash. All parts are perfectly fitted to each other, there are no creaks or extra gaps.

As for the keyboard, we generally liked it. Separately, we can note the long right and left Shift , left ctrl, and Enter is moderately convenient. But Tab I had to shrink it to the width of the symbol keys, which at first causes some discomfort. Well, the arrow block also includes the PgUp and PgDn, which leads to periodic random hits on them when working with this block blindly.

The thin bezel of the screen affected the area available touch panel. The touchpad is quite small, especially in height. Its buttons are touch-sensitive, they are part of the panel itself. As a result, using it is not as convenient as the “classic” one - the dimensions are small, the buttons are not tactile. In our opinion, TrackPoint would not hurt here - both more compact and more convenient. On the other hand, the S10-3t's very handy touchpad isn't particularly necessary since it has a touchscreen.

The Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3t isn't the only netbook with a swivel touch screen. For example, there is also the sensational ASUS T91. But not the most flattering reviews were expressed about its screen, since it was made using resistive technology. The display of our netbook is capacitive, just like the most advanced smartphones. However, we would still recommend calibrating it with proprietary software before actively using it. After that, working with this screen becomes much more pleasant.

In general, the interface of Windows 7 is not so well optimized for finger control, but some work has been done. In some places there is even support for multitouch. But Lenovo decided to make it even easier for the owners of its "netbook tablet" and ships ArcSoft's NaturalTouch program with it. It launches as soon as the screen folds onto the keyboard, and provides easier access to apps for viewing photos, videos, listening to music, and more. However, similar tablet computers are still far from the iPad.

The heat dissipation of the Lenovo netbook is very well organized - it practically did not heat up during testing, although ventilation holes he doesn't have much.

As for the upgrade options, they also surprised us. You can easily access the hard drive, memory module and two (!) PCI Express x1 slots. Rarely do netbook manufacturers allow that kind of freedom to upgrade. However, you still cannot install more than 2 GB of RAM, but the ability to install a more capacious HDD may come in handy over time.

Interfaces, screen, sound

The set of connectors on the Lenovo S10-3t is quite small. There is only a standard set.

The left side has Kensington Lock, power connector, RJ-45, air vents, audio output and microphone input. On the right are a D-SUB, two USBs, and a round plug marked . Her purpose remains a mystery to us. There is also a switch for the operation of wireless network controllers. Only the card reader is located in front. The entire rear end is occupied by the battery.

The audio capabilities of the S10-3t are very ordinary, as is the case with most netbooks. Two stereo speakers are located in front directly below the screen. They sound tolerable, although for a better sound we would recommend connecting external speakers or headphones.

We rate the image quality as high. The screen provides a pleasant, bright and juicy picture. Viewing angles are also very good. Well, as for the resolution, 1024x768 pixels is the most common option for a 10.1-inch display - the characters are moderately small and more or less enough for work.

Performance and battery life

We decided to compare the performance of the Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3t with the MSI U135 netbook based on the same hardware platform.
