Omen X did not appear out of nowhere: real professionals who left the VoodooPC team were responsible for its development. Since its founding in 1991, this company has been creating exclusive computers for gamers and successfully continued to do so after 2006, when it was acquired by Hewlett-Packard Corporation. So experienced gamers have been familiar with the current Omen logo for a long time.

The Omen series of gaming computers began with gaming laptops, then the familiar Omen desktops appeared. But the Omen X isn't just another ultra-powerful desktop PC, it's designed to serve a broader purpose - to be a computer that boggles the mind.

And the first thing that impresses in Omen X is its design and dimensions. The cubic body is simply huge, while it is specially placed on the edge, and seems to be floating in the air. It becomes obvious that such a miracle cannot and should not stand under the table in any way - only in the most visible place, being the semantic center of the interior. So the table should be of the appropriate size.

Appearance and interfaces

The front panel of the cube is divided into four squares, which together form the letter X. All sides of the squares are highlighted, and in a special proprietary HP utility, you can not only set the LEDs to any color, but also the lighting scenario. Direct color-musical installation!

The bottom panel of the front side - with a secret. It is mounted on a magnet, and under it is a tool compartment and a set of hex screws for attaching expansion cards. Owners of the Omen X thus don't need to think about tools for upgrading - everything is always at hand.

Instead of the usual screwdriver, the manufacturer offers a compact hexagon. We tested it in action by disassembling and reassembling the desktop. It must be admitted that a miniature screwdriver would be more convenient in some cases, but the solution with a hidden tool compartment is still pretty.

Another face of the cube-shaped body is given over to compartments for hard drives, which can be up to four in a RAID array. We open the stub and get access to any of them - very convenient. Initially, there is one SATA drive, but the potential for expansion is very serious.

An inconspicuous optical drive shutter is hidden at the bottom of the case. In such a gaming monster, a drive is still present, although discs are used less and less today. But you never know, it might come in handy.

The rear panel has an HDMI connector, six USB 3.0 ports, an optical audio output, an RJ-45 connector, and a 2 × 3.5 mm audio output jack for headphones and a microphone. One more face is occupied by two additional USB port, two ports USB Type-C, an audio-in jack, an audio-in/audio-out combo jack, and an SD/SDHC/MMC card reader. Next door is a power button with a power indicator, as well as a wireless network indicator.

One of the "chips" Omen X - easy access to the insides of the computer. It is necessary to unscrew one fixing screw, then press the EJECT button. The transparent panel is easily removed, and the designer for an upgrade is in front of you.

We note right away that the HP range includes not only ready-made Omen X computers, but also an empty case, which can also be purchased. Surely it will appeal to those who want to build their own "cube" from scratch. However, the already finished Omen X is a great platform for future improvements.

Equipment and internal arrangement

Omen X is available in several versions. We received a 900-177ur model for testing with an Intel Core i7-7700K processor, 16 GB random access memory, NVIDIA graphics card GeForce GTX 1080 with 8 GB of GDDR5 video memory, as well as a 2 TB Seagate SATA drive and a 256 GB Samsung SSD drive. The recommended price of this modification for Russian market is about 239,990 rubles.

Used to remove heat from the processor water cooling and it's just amazing. The video card, which is the GeForce GTX 1080, unfortunately remains air-cooled, so you can hear the noise of the fans quite clearly under high load. Although, if desired, of course, nothing prevents you from adding an additional "dropsy" - such an opportunity is provided in the case. After all, as we noted above, in Omen X everything motivates you to build up power almost to infinity.

Cable management deserves special praise - it's just great here. The power supply is hidden in a separate chamber under motherboard. There are no tangles of wires in sight, inner space very neatly organized. And in Omen X, it is openly demonstrated through a transparent wall. system block.

Test results

Omen X is a powerful gaming computer. And it is purchased, obviously, to play without brakes in 4K resolution. So a second graphic card is clearly suggested for installation.

But we can wait a bit with it: in the configuration we tested, the Omen X only falls short in the 3DMark Time Spy and Fire Strike Ultra tests to the calculated parameters of a 4K gaming computer.

In general, we can say that in practical tasks the machine copes with everything. The table below clearly shows the results.

We also checked how the graphics card behaves under stress. In the FurMark utility, at a resolution of 3840 × 2160, the video processor heated up to 81 ° C and worked stably at the same time.

Thanks in large part to the fast SSD drive, Windows fully starts in just 7 seconds. Below are screenshots from CrystalDiskMark and AS SSD Benchmark tests.

And here are the results of PC Mark 8. As you can see, everything is very, very worthy. Note that we ran this test three times in succession. In the screenshot below - the result of the first tests - 8331 points. The second and third runs gave 8307 and 8329 points, respectively.

OMEN Universe

It is understood that in addition to the system unit, the owner of the HP Omen must have an appropriate keyboard, a mouse with a special mat, headphones with a headset, and a branded 32-inch Omen monitor.

The new line of Omen accessories is aimed at professional gamers and has already been baptized in official international tournaments. It includes the Omen 1100 mechanical keyboard, the Omen 600 mouse, the Omen 800 headset and a spacious mat in special material (standard and large size XL).

All accessories feature the Omen brand logo and input devices feature red backlighting. In the case of a mouse, two zones are highlighted: the logo and the scroll wheel. The keyboard has a standard size for devices with digital block. The WASD area used by gamers for movement is red plastic.

Striking design and comfort

Hardcore gamers will surely appreciate the uncompromising keyboard comfort and precision of the Omen 600 mouse, with its customizable 800 to 12,000 DPI sensor and adjustable weight. The keyboard is equipped full set key blocks, including digital and functional.

The button mechanism itself is made using CHERRY MX Blue mechanical click technology and must withstand 50 million clicks. The keys have a long travel, specific and enough loud noise click characteristic of mechanical gaming keyboards. Alas, for the sake of comfort and efficiency in games, the user will have to sacrifice the comfort of others, or prefer a much quieter membrane-type keyboard.

OMEN 800: clear and powerful sound

The performance of the OMEN 800 headset also caused us sincere admiration. It sits comfortably on the head and has a gutta-percha headband. The manufacturer also thought about a soft wire that does not transmit rustling when turning the head. The sound of the headset here is clear and detailed. It is convenient that the microphone, if necessary, can be extended to an adjustable length.

And even if your success in competitions with other players left much to be desired before, do not hesitate - Omen X will inspire and give a new impetus to your esports career. Not to mention that it will be the subject of admiration for everyone who would come to visit you.

Review gaming computer HP Omen X

When the HP Omen X computer was brought to us for testing, we realized that everything was very serious here. First of all, I was impressed by the PC case itself - it is a massive cube weighing more than 20 kg, placed on its edge with the help of stands. This solution has a lot of advantages, which are discussed below.

The HP Omen X is very large and heavy. And for good reason

In addition to the computer, they brought us a branded keyboard, mouse and even a headset. All accessories are of very high quality, and we also want to talk about them in this review.

Appearance and design features

As we have already written, such an unusual form of the HP Omen X computer has many advantages. First of all, there are no problems with the cooling system, despite the fact that the computer is not crammed with fans at all, and the noise level under load is relatively small.

HP Omen X stands steadily on edge

The second point - separate convenient slots for drives. There are four such slots in total, each drive is installed and removed separately and, of course, it is possible to form a RAID array from them. In our case, there was only one drive (HDD), although somewhere inside the case there was also a 256 GB SSD - an operating system was installed on it.

Access to major ports and hard drives- directly on the front panel

It's so easy and simple to replace the HDD or add another one

Thirdly, additional connectors are located quite conveniently here - they seem to be obtained from above. Here you can find an SD memory card slot, two USB-C port, two USB 3.0, a headset jack (not just for headphones, but for a headset - that is, 4-pin) and a microphone input. Yes, yes, if there is a combined headset jack, there is a separate microphone input, for which we say special thanks to the manufacturer. Streamers will be happy - you can use either a regular headset or some kind of free-standing microphone - and not necessarily USB.

Well, the fourth, less obvious point - the glass panel allows you to observe the state of the insides without opening the case. This and the ability to quickly recall the configuration hardware and make sure there are no serious hardware problems (as an option - smoke from overheating). It is a pity that there are no modding accessories inside the case.

The main insides can be seen through the glass

All modding here is concentrated on the outside - the case is beautifully highlighted in red.

Stylish lighting

The computer is powered by a built-in power supply, a standard power connector is located on the back side, at the bottom.

Rear set of ports

Power port - on the bottom of the computer

In general, the configuration of all ports and connectors is made so that the required wires (power, monitor) do not stick out in plain sight.

Hardware

As usual in the PC world, there are several configurations of the HP Omen X computer, but they are all very “above average”. Our test configuration is CPU last Generations of Intel Core i7-7700, NVIDIA graphics card GeForce GTX 1080 (unfortunately, one), 16 GB of RAM. About SSD and HDD have already been written above.

The insides of the HP Omen X

All this is neatly assembled inside the case and works flawlessly.

Access to motherboard(for example, to replace or install additional memory - the theoretical maximum here is 64 GB) is carried out by removing the cover with glass. To do this, unscrew one screw from the side that holds the lock lever spring.

Glass panel release lever and button

The lever automatically unlocks the lock - just press big button Eject and carefully remove the cap.

The only thing that confuses the HP Omen X is the location of the DVD drive. On the one hand, it’s good that it is here at all, on the other hand, it’s not very convenient to use it (fortunately, in modern realities you often don’t have to do this).

DVD drive tray

The drive is located on one of the lower faces, it has a retractable tray (probably, a slotted one would be more suitable here), and therefore extends at an inclination of 45 degrees.

The video card (recall, in our case, this is the GeForce GTX 1080) is equipped with three DisplayPort outputs, one HDMI and one DVI-D. Also on the rear panel you can find 4 USB 3.0 ports, 2 USB 2.0 ports, a gigabit LAN connector.

Thus, the computer has as many as ten USB ports, of which eight are USB-A and two are USB-C. And, take USB-A, six support USB 3.0. It is difficult to find a computer with a better set of ports.

Performance

We measured the performance of HP Omen X both with benchmarks and real games. 3D Mark acted as a benchmark and it showed excellent marks as expected. It could not have been otherwise in this case - a top-end processor plus a stomping video card do their job.

All the main parameters of the HP Omen X system.

And here is the list of games we played: Forza Motorsport 6, Forza Horizon 3, World Of Tanks (HD),

Battlefield 1 Titanfall 2 Prey Star Wars battlefront.

Clicking on the image will open a full-sized screenshot

Unfortunately, we did not have a 4K monitor in our editorial office at the time of testing, so all tests were in Full-HD resolution. We connected the monitor using an HDMI cable. In all cases, the maximum possible graphics level was set, however automatic detection configuration in most games did it for us.

Graphics settings in World Of Tanks and running the game on HP Omen X

In games where framelock exists - like Forza Horizon and Forza Motorsport - we got a stable 60 FPS even in dynamic scenes. Obviously, a higher frame rate was theoretically possible, but the game did not allow to see it. In World Of Tanks with HD textures, the graphics gave out 115-120 FPS. We did not encounter low framerate in any of the tested games.

Battlefield 1 on ultra settings

The graphics engines of most modern games require mostly a top-end graphics card, but are much more loyal to the processor used. That is why today you can build gaming computers even on Intel Core i3. The presence of the top-end Intel Core i7 of the latest generation, Kaby Lake, in the HP Omen X makes the computer suitable not only for the most modern games, but also for any “heavy” tasks: video editing, audio mixing, complex mathematical calculations.

Forza Horizon 3 on ultra settings

Definitely, the HP Omen X configuration will be enough for any game for a few more years. Probably, sometime in three or four years at Full-HD resolution, you will not have to set the most top-end settings, although of course today it’s not comme il faut to play on a PC in Full-HD - the industry is moving by leaps and bounds to 4K. Recall that the main difference between the GeForce 1080 and GeForce 1070, roughly speaking, is 1070 for Full-HD, and 1080 for 4k. That is, at a resolution of 4k, the GeForce 1080 gives about the same performance as the 1070th in Full-HD.

Accessories

Branded keyboard for HP Omen X is a real gift for a gamer. The keyboard is mechanical, equipped with a backlight (switched by the L1–L4 keys), there are no extra Fn here - a number of function keys work as they should, in addition to this there are 22 programmable keys. And for media control there is a vertical row of 6 keys on the right. Also, the dial block is in place.

A set of accessories for HP Omen X - all in one style

The keyboard backlight has 4 presets

The mouse is quite simple, without additional buttons, but it is quite comfortable and accurate. In the kit, we brought a huge rug to it, which will be especially useful in moments of long and hot battles. In such situations, the hand often sweats and on some surfaces of the tables, optical and laser mice begin to fail. A special mat helps to get rid of this.

Branded mouse - only basic functions, but the mouse itself is very comfortable

Well, the headset combines a very quality headphones and a decent microphone. On the wire is a block with a microphone mute slider and a volume wheel.

Brutal and high-quality headset

Note that the headset itself has separate microphone and headphone jacks, but it came with an adapter for a combo jack. Again - all for the convenience of the user.

Total

Of course, a computer like the HP Omen X cannot be cheap by definition. Depending on the configuration, this monster can be bought from 220 thousand rubles and more. However, Omen X works out its money in full - it is not only a very powerful gaming computer, but also very convenient. Yes, mobility is sacrificed here - but when it comes to home PCs, mobility isn't all that important. But here and the convenience of replacing any components (especially - HDD), and excellent ventilation and a good set of ports and connectors.

Well, we note separately that buying a computer already assembled, firstly, eliminates the torment of searching for components (due to recent events, it is very problematic to find the same GeForce 1080 for sale), and secondly, it removes warranty problems.
