Android system practically has no competitors. That is why most devices work on its basis. But developers keep up with the times, so they are constantly working on improving the existing functions and capabilities of the system.

This material will be devoted to the OS Android 8.0(also called android oreo , which is abbreviated as Android O) and find out what advantages the latest version will have.

So, let's first define short list features that users of the latest version of Android will be able to enjoy:

  • faster speed of work, if we draw a parallel with older versions;
  • advanced protection system;
  • improved artificial intelligence will be able to cover a wider range of devices;
  • development of VR;
  • wide palette of colors;
  • classic Android apps are optimized;
  • Google adds Bluetooth Codec - LDAC from Sony. This will significantly improve the audio quality.

At the first stage, Android 8.0 will be able to support devices android one, tablets and smartphones from Google. It will also be able to support all flagship devices and samsung galaxy S8 / S8 Edge / S8 Plus. The public version will be released in the third quarter of 2017. It will probably happen in August-September this year.

Features and settings in Android 8

Background apps

Google in a new public version operating system began to eliminate aimlessly “hanging” applications that devour the charge of a smartphone and do not bring obvious benefit to the user. Developers are working to increase battery life from a single charge. In their work, developers are struggling with meaningless broadcasts, various working help desks. The new version of the system will carefully check each program for the parameter of need.

How has the notification shade changed?

Getting into the notification shade, the user will be able to see a number of visual adjustments in the latest version of Android.

The six-row strip of top derailleurs now covers more area than before. The order of the toggle switches is now somewhat changed when compared with the previously popular . The current date font, pleasant to look at, makes it possible to cover a small area. This is convenient for the reason that there are now many more shortcuts found in the status bar.
From now on, the most visible elements are flashlight, network, Wi-fi, as well as Bluetooth.

Notifications and nuances of working with them

The developers have made some changes to the notification processing area. If you click on a specific notification a couple of times in a row, you will notice a special switch that allows you to disable all notifications of a particular application without exception. Users will no doubt appreciate these changes.

Swiping on a specific notification in either direction allows the user to perform two actions: either set up all kinds of notifications, or the function of setting a delay for this notification for a certain period of time - 15 seconds, half a minute or 1 minute.

Quick Settings Features

If you go to the quick settings screen, then the shutter new version Android will display the same color scheme to the user as the Google Android Nougat.

But in the special quick settings menu, there have been changes to some key things. From now on, LTE settings, Bluetooth and other settings have received a dual function. If you touch the icon once, it will simple activation functions. If you long press on it, an auxiliary mini-settings menu will open. The new version, like the previous one, will allow you to edit existing quick settings, for example, it will be possible to include a flashlight and other functions important to the user in the notification curtain.

Counters on app shortcuts

The latest version of Android received the long-awaited for many users built-in support for counter programs that are designed for application icons. We are talking about a miniature shortcut that shows missed messages or calls by the user right in the frame of the application icon. It should be emphasized that this solution Google decided to implement, repeating for iOS.

Features of the new settings menu

The Settings menu of the highly anticipated Android O has received a large number of visual changes. Two devices, the Pixel and also the Nexus, are known to get a black and white color format, but with a slight difference in hues. Also, the developers have adjusted the settings menu. You may notice that the hamburger menu icon, which used to be reserved for developers, is missing.

But this is not the key change. The "Settings" menu has changed dramatically. It has shortened. Unlike the old android versions N, it has now ceased to have such familiar categories as “device”, “wireless networks and networks”. The loss of these functions is compensated by the detailed sections that appeared in the updated improved version. Now users will be able to see "Networks and the Internet", "Applications and notifications" and other important, but unusual categories. Thanks to this, the menu is now much clearer.

Numerous subsections of the "Settings" menu have also received a new look. It can be argued that all significant settings old version left, you just have to take the time to find them.

What is now typical for the updated status bar?

To find Ui Tuner in Android O System, you will have to follow this path: select "menu settings", then go to the "System" section. The user will see four areas. These are: a clear and simple navigation bar, a lock screen, a panel that reflects the status of programs and applications, as well as a Do Not Disturb mode. The status bar, as before, contains a list of switches to enable or disable shortcuts. If the user needs to remove any icon, this can be easily done.

The option to display the remaining battery percentage as a percentage has completely disappeared (remember, this feature was available in the System UI Tuner in Nougat). But this disappeared moment is compensated by the appeared option "Show percentage" in the new version of Android that we are discussing. The percentage remaining can be seen next to the battery icon.

How has Do Not Disturb changed?

The Do Not Disturb option now has a couple of toggles. The first is required in order to enable the "do not disturb" mode (it can be found under the visual volume slider). The second is needed in order to add a shortcut to the button responsible for the volume.

What's new in the navigation bar?

The navigation bar will delight users with many interesting features. In the new version we are discussing, you will notice a display template option. This function will allow you to choose between normal, as well as right and left departure of labels to the overall edge. This innovation will be highly appreciated by users who have devices with large screens.

The new version of the system will also allow you to add additional buttons to the left and right of the usual navigation buttons on the display. You can, for example, select the clipboard or keyboard switcher.
It is impossible not to say about the "Clipboard" button, which will allow you to save the necessary piece of text (or all text) to the clipboard. After that, you can drag the copied text fragment to any place. This moment will be highly appreciated by those users who constantly work with text, and also often copy phone numbers and a number of other elements.

What changes has the lock screen undergone?

At first it may seem that the lock screen in the new version of Android under discussion is practically no different from the version of Android 7. But the difference is that now the user will have the opportunity to customize it and configure it. The shortcuts that can be seen at the bottom left and also in the right corner (these are the camera shortcut and the voice assistant) can now be changed to whatever your heart desires. This change is one of the most anticipated and useful things in the new progressive version of Android O.

In addition, the developers decided to revise the Ambient Display mode. From now on, on a slightly muted device screen, the user will be able to see not only the clock, but also other important information.

Other small changes worth noticing

Small changes also take place in Android O. For example, the familiar Downloads app has changed its name. It was simply called "Files". The user will have to search for the "Memory" section for a long time. And all because he went to the developer tab.

What is audio now?

Audio sounds are now improved. This happened due to the fact that Sony gave Google its LDAC codec. This means that now all users of the new version of Android who have Bluetooth headphones that support LDAC will be able to enjoy excellent sound quality. But the audio can be improved not only thanks to the support of this codec. Support for aptx is provided, as well as aptX HD. The developers have not forgotten about SBC and AAC. For music lovers, there are settings for audio sample rates and bits. In addition, the system adds its own API for special applications that need high-fidelity audio.

Developer work on notification channels

So far, notification channels have not been appreciated by users to the extent that developers expected. But it's only a matter of time. In fact, their significance is significant. They help the application divide the entire range of notifications into a wide variety of topics, which can be blocked individually or allowed.
The user will be able to manage them instantly by holding down on the application notification in the curtain of the notifications that appear.

How is the installation of applications from unverified sources now?

In the previous version, when installing web applications from an unknown source (except for Google Play) the user was required to pay attention to the security settings and select "Unknown sources". But in the described new version, now everything is not so. From now on, the user must give their permission to the applications used for the ARC boot process.

Responsive Icons

These icons are used by Google to communicate that in the near future, working android screens will receive a single style and will have the same appearance. This moment was borrowed from IOS.

A number of other innovations

In addition to the innovations listed above, there is another pleasant moment for users - this is wifi function Awareness. It is necessary so that the new version of Android can interact with other devices and web applications from Wi-Fi, without obliging the user to actually connect to the Global Network. By the way, Android Run-Time, which is responsible for the processing speed telephone applications, now works in a slightly different way, since now some optimization points are taken into account here.

Summing up

As you can see, Android 8 will get a lot of new useful features. At the same time, some old functions have been removed and transformed into a more user-friendly format. Users will appreciate the ability to manage notifications, updated design settings menu. Speaking about my personal impressions, I can say the following: I am pleasantly impressed with the set of new features and pleased with the adjustments that the developers have made. Therefore, I recommend that everyone quickly evaluate all the innovations that the Android O version has proposed.

First of all, the updated Settings menu is striking. It is now decorated in black and white and looks very stylish. Convenient sidebar navigation, which appeared in Android Nougat, disappeared. In addition, some settings have been changed.

2. Limit processes in the background to save battery

Increasing autonomy has become one of the main tasks that developers set themselves when working on . To do this, they completely redesigned the Doze feature, which originally appeared in Marshmallow. The list of actions that applications can perform in the background has also been revised. New, more stringent restrictions can significantly extend the battery life of gadgets.

3. Quiet mode for individual notifications

AT latest versions On Android, you can turn on silent mode, as a result of which you will not be disturbed by notifications, calls, and messages for a while. In Android O, it will be possible to activate this mode for individual applications. To do this, move the notification to the side and click on the clock icon.

4. New features of the fingerprint scanner

For the first time, smartphones have the ability to perform some actions using gestures on the fingerprint scanner. However, this feature will be further developed in the new version of Android. Most importantly, the new API will allow you to use vertical and horizontal swipes, long and short taps on the scanner in third-party applications.

5. Navigation bar settings

Android Marshmallow first introduced a hidden menu called the System UI Tuner, which allows you to customize the appearance of elements of the operating system. In the new version, its capabilities have been significantly expanded. The best part is that you can now change the appearance and functionality of the buttons on the bottom navigation bar.

6. Application shortcuts on the lockscreen

In Android O, it will be possible to place in the left and right corner of the lock screen not only buttons to launch the dialer and camera, but also any other applications.

7. Picture-in-Picture Mode

The multi-window mode from Nougat has been further developed. Now it will be possible to put the video in a separate floating window and watch it on top of all other applications. This feature will be especially useful on tablets.

8. Improved battery usage statistics

The energy efficiency settings section has received more than just visual changes. You will finally know which tasks drain the battery of the device the most. With the names of processes and applications by name.

9. New autocomplete feature

Everyone roughly knows how the autocomplete function in the browser works. You enter your data once, and then they can be substituted into the required fields with one click of the mouse. Now the same opportunity will appear in Android O. The developers promise that all important personal data will be reliably protected at the operating system level, so there is nothing to worry about.

10. Dark theme

After eight years of existence, Android is finally here dark theme design.

11. Notification channels

The notification system in each new version of Android is getting better and better. In Android O, apps will be able to create channels that post notifications related to the same topic. For each channel, you can set your own display options.

12. Responsive icons

Older versions of Android used free-form icons, Nougat recommends round icons, many third-party firmware prefer square icons. So that the application icon looks organic on any system on Android based, developers have to embed icons in them for all occasions. Android O solved this problem. Now the operating system itself will make sure that the icon of any program looks beautiful.

13. Hi-Fi Bluetooth codecs

Bluetooth has always been criticized for poor sound quality compared to wired headphones. Thankfully, Google has added new codecs to Android O for Bluetooth audio transmission and playback, including Sony's LDAC. This should greatly improve audio quality on compatible Bluetooth devices.

14. Improve the display of colors in applications

To facilitate image editing, Android O will be able to use in applications color profiles AdobeRGB and Pro Photo RGB. And this means that what you see in the photo editor on the smartphone screen will look the same on any other displays.

15. Wi-Fi Aware

This is a promising new technology that allows two devices under Android control O communicate with each other even if they are on different Wi-Fi networks. It is not yet clear how this will be used in practice. Perhaps for file transfer or media streaming.

16. Display the number of unread notifications on icons

Many third-party launchers have been able to do this for a long time. Now support for the function of displaying the number of unread notifications has appeared at the operating system level. If the form of a three-digit number unread emails icon annoys you, you can disable this feature in the settings.

Of course, this is not an exhaustive list, since we did not mention some minor visual changes and those features that are hidden too deep in the bowels of the operating system.

In addition, do not forget that for now we only have a development assembly, which will be finalized and changed. But now Android O looks very attractive, so it's worth the wait.

The final release of Android O is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2017.

Next update Android will.

Update: Motorola has confirmed that most latest phones will receive an update soon, including the Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus, which were originally excluded from the update list (marketing error). It has now been confirmed that the Essential Phone will be updated to Oreo in the next few months.

Android Oreo is the official name next version popular mobile operating system Google systems, available now for select devices.

In terms of core features, Oreo focuses on speed and efficiency. For most smartphones updated to Android 8.0, otherwise known as Oreo, download speeds will be as much as double what we've already seen on the Google Pixel. In addition, the operating system update will pay attention to background activity that drains your battery and mobile data.

While Oreo has some subtle visual changes, some promise to be useful, including a picture-in-picture (PiP) mode for apps like YouTube, Hangouts, and more, and a redesigned notification shape that promises to make notifications easier to check.

Below you will learn more about best features available with the Android Oreo update. But first check which phones are compatible with software from Google.

Didn't find your phone? There is no reason to worry yet as more manufacturers are claiming their phones to be updated day by day, including Essential, Huawei, Samsung, Motorola, LG, HDM Global (Nokia), Sony and more.

The list of supported devices will no doubt grow with time, for example, Google Pixel 2 comes out on October 4th.

Along with the likely improvements to the Doze feature, which intelligently saves battery when your phone is idle, it's possible that Android Oreo will be able to squeeze a few more hours out of your phone.

Contextual click options

Tried to copy the address to e-mail so you can paste it into Google Maps? No more, says Android 8.0 Oreo.

Using machine learning, the OS can now recognize which application is best for the character sequence you are working with. Another example: the ability to highlight a phone number or insert it into a set.

Responsive Icons

As the name suggests, Google has put in place strict development guidelines that developers adhere to in order to create a consistent visual style for more apps.

Also, these new app icons will animate based on user interaction and… have you seen the animation demo? Look. Looks amazing.

It looks like Google hasn't released these awesome icons yet, but we hope and look forward to seeing them in the next Android 8 update.

Sound Performance Improvement

Android update Oreo now offers native support for LDAC, the Bluetooth enabled Bluetooth audio codec.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 is the first Android smartphone to come preloaded with Bluetooth 5, a technology that will expand the bandwidth and increase the wireless bandwidth limit for your content and thus improve the quality of the audio content transmitted over wireless network between smartphone and headphones.

And while many devices will follow suit, audio quality on Android will be even better thanks to support for Android 8.0 Oreo LDAC, a Bluetooth audio codec with high resolution from Sony.

In the developer options, we already see a lot of options for tweaking the audio bitrate, and we expect more progress to be made in the future. This can be especially important for those users who are planning to buy the best wireless headphones.

That's great news, especially since the Google Pixel 2 doesn't have a headphone jack.

Notification dots

Notification dots are new to the Android Oreo update.

Ancient users who have used iOS and some third-party launchers for years are familiar with the notification shortcut on home screen app icons as a built-in Android feature.

Unlike iOS, Android Oreo doesn't tell you how many pending alerts there are within this application, but now you know where to look, which is good.

New emoji

Here are the new emojis forAndroid 8.

Google has finally replaced the generic emoji style from older versions of Android and now offers round emoji for Android Oreo.

There are also new emojis in the form of fairies, mermaids, giraffes, wizards and many more.

Easter eggs

An Android update wouldn't be complete without Easter eggs. Oddly enough, Oreo also comes with a mini-game that continues the Android Nougat idea.

But on Oreo, clicking and holding on the OS logo takes you to a mysterious blank screen with nothing but an octopus. This mini-game is quite simple and not too much of a game.

You can drag the octopus around the screen while watching its tentacles float around. That's all. This game hit the web before we knew about the sweet new name of Android 8.

Other featuresAndroidoreo

Google is pushing a number of features with the Android Oreo update that we've already seen, but that means we'll likely see more from each feature in the future.

Android Instant Apps - the way you can use apps without installing them, use your web browser instead - is getting a boost with Android 8, so expect developer support to expand soon.

Google is also including an auto-fill option in Android 8 so you can sign in to some of your favorite apps faster.

There are new accessibility options, including simple controls for sound and fast access from the navigation bar for functions such as magnifying or highlighting for a dialog.

In addition, there are even more features such as new downloadable fonts, background location limitation, package notification, new feature Wi-Fi Assistant, a support window called "Tip Tips" and notification categories so you can have more control over what you see.

We'll update this section with new features as Google showcases them, and as new smartphones come out ready for the Android 8.0 Oreo update.

That is, if your smartphone is on this list, do not rejoice too much. Also, on the contrary, if you did not find your smartphone in this list, do not get upset ahead of time. The timing of the update should also be considered indicative, as they can be postponed indefinitely. The latest generation flagships will be the first to receive the update, after which Android 8.0 will gradually reach older and lower-end models.

Recall what new Google promised in Android 8:

  1. Picture-in-picture mode. Unfortunately for the desired application- YouTube - this only works with a Red subscription.
  2. aptX HD and LDAC support.
  3. Specifying specific application installation sources.

There were other changes and improvements as well. But they are either intended for application developers, or they affect the internals of the system without showing any interface to the user.

Desktops and application menus

Stock Android uses a desktop/menu split scheme. Installed application icons are placed on the desktop by default, but you can remove them.

The menu contains all applications. One line is reserved for the most frequently used applications (detected automatically), followed by a list that scrolls vertically.

Also in the menu is available to search for applications. If the application is not found on the smartphone, it is suggested to search for it in Google Play.

On the desktop, when you long press on the application icon, a menu of special actions with the application appears (similar to Force Touch in iOS, but since the press is not strong, but just long, it works on any screen).

But if you start dragging the icon, it disappears and the standard menu of actions with the application appears: remove (from the desktop) and delete (not available for system applications).

Desktops are formed as needed: a new one is added if, when adding an application, the next shortcut should be placed on the next desktop, or if the user dragged it outside the existing desktop during setup.

To add widgets, you need to long press on an empty area of the screen.

The leftmost desktop is reserved for the Google Now screen.

Dialer and contacts

The application consists of two parts: contacts and dialer. The dialer supports search (smart dial), incl. in Russian.

In "Contacts" there are three tabs: "Favorites", "Contacts" and the call log. Favorites contains tiles with corresponding group numbers.

Contacts are sorted alphabetically: first Russian, then English, then numbers.

Tapping from the contact list opens the contact card.

Tapping on the mini-card in the "Recent" opens a menu of quick actions with a contact.

Tap on the phone icon in "Recent" makes a call.

In the settings, you can enable the search for places nearby. Then, when searching for contacts, it will be possible to see even those organizations whose contacts are not saved in the smartphone.

SMS client

The principles of the SMS client are the same as for any Android device, regardless of the shell. First there is a list of message chains, in each chain - the actual messages.

You can reply to any message directly in the blind.

Ambient Display and splash screen

This is an analogue of such a function as Moto Active Display. When you pick up your smartphone, the clock, date and notification icons appear on the screen. The function even works on devices with IPS screens, such as the Nexus 5x.

Enabled/disabled by the "Raise to check notifications" setting.

When you connect your device to a charger or docking station, you can set it to display a more complex screensaver. These can be clocks (both digital and pointer), news and weather, photos or iridescent colors.

Lock screen

The default lock screen shows notification texts (can be set to hide), as well as icons for accessing the camera (works without unlocking) and Google Assistant (requires unlocking). Icon swipe works in any direction (horizontally, vertically or diagonally).

If you swipe a notification left or right hard, it disappears. If you move it a little, then the actions “Snooze” and “Settings” open. You can snooze the notification for 1 hour, or call up the notification settings for the app.

Notification shade

When opening the curtain, the user sees six switches (without signatures) and notifications. By dragging the area of the switches down, you can open their 3x3 grid (already with captions).

The switch area is customizable, but keep in mind that if you make more than 9 switches available, you will end up with two pages that you have to scroll through with horizontal swipes.

Notification groups expand when you swipe down on the group. A swipe down on a specific notification will reveal its details.

Also in the screenshots you can see that notifications that do not fit in the curtain are displayed as icons in the bottom line.

Notification swipes work similarly to the lock screen.

If the application supports customization of notification categories, then when you click on the settings icon, you can see a suggestion to configure all categories.

If you set the importance to low (no notifications), then notifications will still fall into the curtain, but will be folded into a narrow strip. Example for Gmail and weather:

Additional multitasking features

Starting with Android 7, the application switcher button can handle not only a single press, but also a double one ( fast switching to the previous application), and long (enable split screen mode)

Some applications support picture-in-picture mode.

Do not flatter yourself about the presence of YouTube here - without a subscription Red given function won't work.

It saves the situation a little Play app Movies can display videos purchased from YouTube. And you can already watch them in PiP mode (but you can’t just take a screenshot from the video).

You can also launch the video in the browser and continue watching it in this mode. Of course, if this video is not streamed from YouTube.

Enabling the mode is as follows: launch the desired functionality and press the "Home" key. The application minimizes to a small picture. Then you can simply swipe it down the screen.

In addition to video, you can enable picture-in-picture for navigation.

Although, in my opinion, this makes little sense.

Android Beam

If you need to transfer some data from one device to another and both devices are in your hands, you can use android technology Beam. You open the transferred content (for example, a photo), touch the back of one smartphone to the back of another, the devices connect via NFC, and the “Press to transfer data” prompt appears. Click and the content goes away. A notification appears on the second device.

Actually, for transmission, it is no longer NFC that is used, but Bluetooth. NFC is only required to connect devices to each other.

Zoom settings

Starting with Android 7, in the screen settings, you can select the font size (text scale) and the scale of the image on the screen.

If the font size is configured in all Android devices (and often the shell settings are even richer than the standard version of the OS), then the Chinese like to “cut out” the scaling setting. So, for example, in EMUI and MIUI this setting is missing, which is very inconvenient: you cannot adjust the scaling as comfortably as possible for yourself. Technically, the scaling setting changes the software pixel density (ppi) for the device. And it affects all applications. For more information about these settings and the relationship between scaling and programmatic screen size, see the article "
