Hello dear friends!

Today we will touch on such a topic as MTK - a platform for Chinese phones. In a nutshell, the platform got its name after the appearance of a number of processors produced by MediaTekInc. The fact that it occupies the fourth (!) place in the world in the production of semiconductors and processors for mobile technologies. Another achievement that added to its weight in the global market was the accession in 2010 to the OHA mobile alliance ( openhandsetAlliance), which includes the largest manufacturers of components for mobile devices, cellular operators, developers software and even some famous manufacturers mobile phones.

But, nevertheless, let's get back to our topic ... So, what is the MTK platform? In fact, this is a platform based on a single chip, which integrates many functions, both hardware and software level. Perhaps, to simplify the understanding of the principle of operation, it will be enough for you to draw an analogy with popular computer Intel processors(i3, i5, i7). As you know, Intel Corporation has laid in them support for high-quality video integrated into the processor, the operation of several cores and several threads, PCI-Express, USB3.0 and much more. With this decision, the developers reduced the number of chips (previously, other chips were used to perform the same tasks, in addition to the processor). Another positive effect from the introduction of the all-in-one system was a significant reduction in production costs without compromising speed and reliability, which generally had a beneficial effect on the global computer equipment market.

Literally the same approach, but for mobile devices, was also applied by MediaTek. Depending on the application (phones, smartphones or ), the platform uses a single chip, in which the manufacturer has built support for a decent set of functions ( Mobile Internet, bluetooth, WiFi, built-in user interface). From the hardware side, it should be noted support for the latest touch displays, high-quality photo / video cameras, uninterrupted operation of two SIM cards and a bluetooth module integrated into the chip). The main task of developing the MTK universal platform was to create an inexpensive chip with the most favorable parameters. Considering that for more simple phones quite often an old generation processor is used (and besides, it is necessary to develop software almost from scratch), the costs of the manufacturer are very high. That is why, when the MTK platform was announced and the first chips with an integrated hardware and software system appeared on the market, many major manufacturers of mobile communication devices breathed a sigh of relief. Indeed, thanks to the revolutionary solutions of engineers from MediaTek, the financial and time costs associated with the release of new devices have significantly decreased. For example, by changing the built-in operating system(or universal firmware), now the manufacturer can immediately start implementing the new product, without spending extra time on developing and running software. At the same time, for end users, the price is also significantly reduced. That's why Chinese smartphones today they have become available to literally all segments of the population, and the quality of mobile devices from the Middle Kingdom is going uphill at an incredible pace.

We hope that the introductory information on MTK, a platform for Chinese phones and other mobile devices, will serve as the basis for a whole series of articles that will be useful to our wholesale buyers when choosing a product. In the near future, we plan to review the most successful MediaTek processors used by the best Chinese factories to manufacture their products.

MediaTek Inc is a factoryless (fabless) semiconductor company, is the largest Taiwanese designer of microelectronic chips for wireless communication and digital media devices. The company was founded on May 28, 1997. The headquarters is located in Hsinchu Industrial and Science Park (Taiwan); divisions exist in China, Denmark, UAE, India, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, UK, USA and Sweden. MediaTek is the fourth largest factoryless company in the world and the second largest chipset company for mobile devices.

We spoke with MediaTek General Manager for International Sales and Marketing, Dr. Finbar Moynihan, and learned from him what MTK plans for the near future, how important the Russian market is for the company, and much more.

Dr. Finbar Moynihan is MediaTek's General Manager of International Sales and Marketing. Prior to that, he served as Director of Product Marketing for MediaTek's Smartphones division located in Hsinchu, Taiwan. Dr. Moynihan joined MediaTek in 2008 after MediaTek acquired a chip maker for wireless devices Analog Devices, where he worked as director of product marketing. In 1988 he received a bachelor's degree from University College Cork (Cork, Ireland). In 1990, he received a Master's degree in Engineering and in 1994 a Ph.D. from the same university.

site, hereinafter MR. It's no secret that most MTK-based smartphones are devices from small and medium-sized Chinese manufacturers. However, recently there have been rumors that many smartphones from Sony, Lenovo, Huawei will soon appear based on MTK. Will there be other companies on this list?

MediaTek, hereinafter MTK. First, I'd like to dispel the misconception that MediaTek-based smartphones are mostly made by small to medium sized Chinese manufacturers. Large Chinese companies Lenovo, Alcatel/TCL, Huawei and ZTE, as well as other global brands have been cooperating with MediaTek for many years, these are our long-term and strategic partners.

The MediaTek Mobile Phone solution is supplied directly or through intermediaries to the world's largest, Chinese and Russian OEMs. We plan to ship over 500 million mobile phone chipsets in 2013, which should give us a market share of around 30% globally.

mr. The Fly brand is very popular in Russia, and it is this company that offers many smartphones based on MTK - how important is this brand for you and are there any plans to create separate versions of platforms for Fly in the future, for example, “overclocked” or with additional features?

MTK. Fly is the largest and one of the most important partners of MediaTek in Russia for the entire product line for mobile phones and smartphones. When MediaTek launches new chipset for mobile phones, we are considering Fly to launch the solution on the Russian market as soon as possible. And we are always ready to promptly provide technical support in case Fly needs additional customization for the local market.

mr. China has its own 3G standard and practically no LTE in the form in which this technology is developing today, however, smartphones from MTK are increasingly being sold outside of China. Does the company plan to create a platform with support for European and American LTE frequencies?

MTK. AT this moment we are not prepared to reveal details of our LTE solutions.

mr. Recently, MTK introduced their first octa-core chip - it's very cool! In what direction, according to the company, technology will develop in the next few years? A further increase in the number of processor cores or their optimization and increase in frequency?

MTK. The main trends of personal devices of the future are ubiquity, intuitiveness and power. "Smart" mobile devices will have to meet the increasingly diverse needs of users. Thus, a more intuitive interface and a powerful platform that supports multitasking and cutting-edge multimedia technologies, as well as ubiquitous connectivity through advanced communication technologies, will be required.

For MediaTek, new opportunities in the field of microprocessors are not only to increase the number of cores in the CPU and GPU, but also to increase their performance and operating frequency. In our execution, all this is accompanied by architecture, operational technologies and the right balance of software optimization and hardware which also reduces energy consumption. To sum up, we do not view energy optimization and performance improvement as independent priorities, but as a single task that requires an adequate balance between these conflicting requirements.

We are already working in this direction. Reaffirming its reputation as a developer of innovative and breakthrough platforms, MediaTek has implemented an advanced processor task scheduler algorithm, which, together with adaptive control, temperature management and power consumption, can improve the performance and energy efficiency of a multi-core architecture. With this technology, applications can access all processors at the same time, providing a truly diverse user experience.

mr. A few years ago it was believed (at least in Russia) that the MTK platforms are very weak and only the cheapest and slowest devices are created on them. And then it turned out that platforms from MTK are almost catching up with Qualcomm and Samsung in terms of performance, and sometimes even ahead. In reality, smartphones on MTK also work quickly and efficiently. However, users will find out about this by directly purchasing a smartphone with MTK on board. Does the company plan to increase the literacy of customers in this matter with advertising, some promotions? After all, now some people do not take smartphones to MTK simply because they still think that they are slow. That is, they are in captivity of a stereotype that was popular a few years ago.

MTK. Indeed, MediaTek is expanding its portfolio towards higher-end products in terms of performance and functionality. This year, MediaTek has launched several campaigns around the world (global and local) aimed at increasing mediatek brand awareness and repositioning in the minds of consumers from a low-end and ultra-low-end solution provider to a one-stop manufacturer operating in all segments, including mid-range and premium. Next year we plan to increase the number of such communications with consumers.

We will announce some of them this year.

mr. Almost everyone who hears about MediaTek believes that this is a Chinese company, because smartphones with MTK are mostly Chinese. In fact, MTK is a Taiwanese brand, how important is it to you or, on the contrary, is it unimportant that MTK is associated with the Chinese market and not with the Taiwanese one?

MTK. It doesn't matter to us that some consumers associate the company with the Chinese market. MTK's mission today is to continue to establish itself in the minds of consumers as a fast-growing and global semiconductor chip supplier whose solutions are used by OEMs and ODMs around the world.

mr. Many users have heard about MTK and even know what kind of company it is - but they have absolutely no idea about the process of creating chipsets and their production. After all, MTK is only engaged in development, as far as I know, and everything is produced at partner factories. Can you tell, at least briefly, how the whole system is built from the moment the platform is developed to the appearance on the shelf of a smartphone with MTK inside?

MTK. MediaTek is a leading non-manufacturing semiconductor chip manufacturer providing chipsets for wireless communications and digital media solutions. One of our key competitive advantages is the "Total Solution" or "Turnkey Solution". The "Total Solution" concept reflects MediaTek's commitment to providing our customers with the most complete system level solutions. Unlike competitors that may offer unfinished or unoptimized platforms, MediaTek strengthens and improves solutions in terms of "system optimization", which is achieved through various aspects of hardware and software integration.

Integrated solutions simplify the development process, as well as reduce its costs, thus, the freed up resources can be directed to expanding the range, improving user experience, optimizing marketing and sales. As a result, mobile phone manufacturers have revolutionized the market with new products, greatly reduced development costs, and reduced time-to-market for new devices.

We work closely with manufacturing partners to enable manufacturers and partners to achieve market success through broad functionality, streamlined development, minimized resources, reduced time-to-market, and high levels of cost efficiency.

mr. How has MTK managed to create very fast and at the same time extremely inexpensive chipsets?

MTK. Our team has developers of the highest level, both in software and hardware. Our engineers offer innovative ways of working that enable continuous optimization and improvement of our designs and book value structure. We are confident that the focus on market needs and in-house developments will continue to bring us success.

mr. What can we expect from MTK in the near future? Ultra-low-cost platforms for the most simple smartphones? Or is this direction in the past? Development of the most powerful platforms for flagships?

MTK. The trend towards multi-tasking devices, increased performance requirements coupled with improved cost and power efficiency that can only be achieved through an optimized multi-core approach to the system. This means that data processing by several cores at once becomes the most important property mobile solutions SoC in mass markets too. MediaTek aims to improve battery life in next-generation mobile devices and tablets by providing the flexibility to attach the right size core for specific tasks, allowing for better processing of numerical, graphical and multimedia data.

We are also the first supplier in the world to implement mid-level and entry-level (MT6572) and quad-core (MT6589) platforms using 28nm technology. We are constantly introducing new media solutions that improve the performance of the display, camera, throughput memory, video recording and playback. These solutions combine high quality functionality with an optimized system architecture that reduces power consumption without any loss to users. As a recent example, our latest smartphone and tablet platforms contain a technology we call MiraVision that allows us to port solutions implemented on viewing hardware digital television, to mobile devices. This includes features such as AAL (Ambient-light Adaptive Luma), LABC: Light-based Adaptive Backlight Control, and CABC: Content-based Adaptive Dynamic Backlight Control, which adjusts brightness and power consumption based on ambient light, content, etc. ., thereby reducing the power consumption of the display by up to 50%.

mr. One of the "chips" of many smartphones based on MTK chipsets is support for simultaneous operation with two SIM-cards. However, at the same time, all such smartphones use one radio module - what is the reason for this and can we expect a smartphone with MTK with support for two SIM cards and two radio modules? So that even when you are talking on one SIM card, for example, the second one could be used to access the Internet?

MTK. To support dual SIM cards, the device must have a CPU that supports two modems and two built-in antennas. This in itself is an easy decision. Currently, the MediaTek MT6589 platform supports Dual-SIM Dual-Active mode.

mr. Thanks for the replies!

MTK Droid Tools. Users who are fond of flashing their Android devices, or who perform this procedure when they need to restore their smartphone or tablet, need a number of software tools. It's good when the device manufacturer has developed a full-featured high-quality tool - a flasher program, but such cases are extremely rare. Fortunately, third-party developers come to the rescue, sometimes offering very interesting solutions. One such proposal is the MTK Droid Tools utility.

When working with memory sections of Android devices based on the MTK hardware platform, in most cases the SP Flash Tool application is used. This is a really powerful tool for flashing, but the developers did not provide in it the ability to call some, often very desired functions. In order to eliminate such an oversight of Mediatek programmers and provide users with a really full set tools for operations with the software part of MTK devices, the MTK Droid Tools utility was developed.

The development of MTK Droid Tools was probably carried out by a small community of like-minded people, and perhaps a program was created for their own needs, but the resulting tool is so functional and complements Mediatek's proprietary utility - SP Flash Tool so well that it has taken its rightful place among the most commonly used programs for firmware by specialists MTK devices.

Important warning! Some actions in the program while working with devices whose bootloader is locked by the manufacturer may damage the device!

Interface

Since the utility performs service functions and is intended more for professionals who are fully aware of the purpose and consequences of their actions, the program interface is not full of unnecessary "beauties". A small window with a few buttons, in general, nothing remarkable. At the same time, the author of the application took care of its users and provided each button with detailed hints about its purpose when hovering the mouse pointer. Thus, even a novice user, if desired, can master the functionality.

Device information, root shell

By default, when you launch MTK Droid Tools, the " Phone information". When you connect the device, the program immediately displays basic information about the hardware and software components of the device. Thus, it is very easy to find out the processor model, Android assembly, kernel version, modem version, and IMEI. All information can be immediately copied to the clipboard using the special button (1). For more serious manipulations through the program, you will need root rights. However, this should not bother users of MTK Droid Tools, the utility allows you to get root, albeit temporarily, until the next reboot, but in one click. To get a temporary root shell there is a dedicated button ROOT».

Memory block map

To backup using the SP Flash Tool, you need information about the addresses of memory sections specific device. Using the MTK Droid Tools program, obtaining this information does not cause any problems, just press the " Block map” and a window containing the necessary information will immediately appear. A button is also available here, by clicking on which a scatter file is created.

root, backup, recovery

When you switch to the tab " root, backup, recovery”, the corresponding tab name becomes available to the user. All actions are carried out using buttons, the names of which speak for themselves.

If the user has a clearly defined purpose for using the application, the functionality fulfills itself 100%, just press the appropriate button and wait for the result. For example, to install an application that manages root rights, you need to click the " superuser". Then select a specific program that will be installed on the Android device - " SuperSU" or " superuser". Just two clicks! Other functions of the tab " root, backup, recovery” work in a similar way and are very simple to perform.

Logging

For full control over the process of using the utility, as well as identifying and eliminating errors, MTK Droid Tools maintains a log file, information from which is always available in the corresponding field of the program window.

Additional functions

When using the application, you get the feeling that it was created by a person who has repeatedly flashed Android devices and tried to bring maximum convenience to the process. During the firmware, very often there is a need to call the ADB console, as well as reboot the device into certain mode. For these purposes, the program provides special buttons - " adb terminal " and " Reboot". Such additional functionality significantly saves time spent on manipulating device memory sections.

Advantages

  • Support for a huge list of Android devices, these are almost all MTK devices;
  • Performs functions not available in other applications designed to manipulate memory sections;
  • Simple, convenient, understandable, friendly, and most importantly, Russified interface.

Flaws

  • To unlock the full potential of the application, you will additionally need the SP Flash Tool program;
  • Some actions in the program when working with devices with a locked bootloader can damage the device;
  • If the user does not have knowledge about the processes that occur during the firmware of Android devices, as well as skills and experience, the utility is likely to be of little use.
  • Does not support devices with 64-bit processors.

MTK Droid Tools as an additional tool in the arsenal of a firmware specialist is practically unparalleled. The utility greatly simplifies the procedures and brings acceleration of manipulations to the process of flashing MTK devices, and also provides the user with additional features.

Many of you ask the question: "Why does the tablet have the MTK83..; MTK87.. chip, and in the firmware the scatter files go to MTK65..; MTK67.. ???"

Because MTK83.. is the twin of MT65.., and MTK67.. is the twin of MTK87.. and almost all scatter files and apdb databases in firmware for tablets come with the name of twins...

The name of these files in the firmware is not an indicator, because. developers do not change the names of these files, but change the software part.

Consider the information on twins using the example of MT6592 and MT8392, so that you understand the meaning ...

MediaTek has two clearly separated lines of platforms - one for smartphones (indexes start at "6"), the second for tablets (at "8"). If we compare the top solutions with 8 cores - MT6592 and MT8392 - then according to the specifications and "numbers" they will be the same. But the first is for smart phones", the second - for" tablets.
MT8392 seems to be a twin of MT6592, but there are differences between them. The differences between them are as follows. MediaTek actively applies the concept of "finished platform solution". That is, one in which the device manufacturer is offered not just a chipset and software, but also a reference design system board. So the design of boards with chipsets for smartphones and tablets differs, and quite significantly. Smartphones are smaller than tablets, which means the board layout needs to be tighter. In addition, tablets in the vast majority of cases have more capacious batteries (say, if the average smartphone has 2500 mAh, then the average tablet has 4000 or more). However, users, of course, want to charge them in the same couple of hours as in the case of “smart phones”. Therefore, the MediaTek MT8392 chipset is optimized for more powerful charging device- so that the tablet charges quickly, but without compromising battery life. This is especially important in the situation with tablet computers, since smartphones most often have removable batteries, but tablets have built-in batteries in 99.9% of cases. Next come the differences in the set of drivers - and, above all, those related to working with the screen. Smartphones usually use displays with a resolution of 2560x1440, 1920x1080 or, for example, 1280x720 pixels, that is, a 16:9 format. But in tablets, everything is somewhat different: 2560x1600, 1920x1200 and 1280x800. Therefore, the driver sets that come with the MediaTek MT6592 and MT8392 are different. There are, of course, "Monsieur Loving Perversions" - they are trying to make tablets on the MT6592, trying to take part of the drivers from the package for the MT8392. Such devices work acceptable, but ... In this case, the user is not at all safe from glitches. Finally, the Android builds offered by MediaTek bundled with the MT6592 and MT8392 also differ somewhat. For example, in the case of MT8392, the ability to display the entire interface, including the desktop, is implemented both in vertical and in horizontal mode. Because tablets are usually exploited this way and that. The interface of the "Settings" section is also completely different - simply because the screens tablet computers larger (from 7 inches and above), and in their case it is logical to make this menu with two columns, and not one, like smartphones. There are many such differences - just twist a smartphone on MT6592 and a tablet on MT8392 in your hands.
