Packaging (package set ZTE Grand Memo N5)

The packaging design is rather strict and minimalistic. Inside is the phone itself, a charger and a headset with spare ear pads.

The headset is made quite well, but it often falls out of my ears at the slightest pull on the not-so-long wire. The sound is clear and very loud.

Display and appearance

The display is made according to IPS technology, its brightness is at its best even in bright light, viewing angles are standardly good for displays of this type.

The size of the device does not allow one-handed operation, it is impossible to reach all corners of the screen with your thumb while holding the device in your hand (at least in mine). But given the screen size, this is not surprising and expected. The official website stated special abilities for one-handed control, but I did not find them. Although if we are to be quite picky, then the size of the frames could be smaller.

Screen resolution 1280×720, i.e. “just” HD, with a pixel density of 257 (this is the figure stated on the manufacturer's website, but AnTuTu Benchmark in the device information shows 320 dpi). None of these numbers are anything out of the ordinary, but for day-to-day work it's enough. The image looks great, graininess is not visible at all.

It feels like the screen is covered with an oleophobic coating, because the prints from it disappear immediately after putting the smart in your pocket. Regarding coatings, such as Gorilla Glass, there is no information anywhere. Of course, I did not try to scratch the screen, but for 2 weeks of use, not a single scratch appeared on the screen.

On the front side of the smartphone, on the right in the upper part of the smartphone, there is a 0.9MP camera, almost in the middle is led indicator, which will light up for missed calls, unread messages, when the battery level is low or when the battery is being charged. Next to it is a proximity sensor.

Below are the standard touch buttons"Back", "Home" and "Menu".

At the top end there is a power button and a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

The volume rocker is located on the right side of the smartphone.

On the left side there are slots for a SIM card and memory cards covered with plastic covers that easily open and rotate for easy access. On the same side, at the bottom, there is a microUSB connector, which is not covered by anything.

Nothing on the bottom but a microphone hole.

On top of the back of the device is a camera that protrudes quite a lot from the lid. At the bottom is a fairly large speaker with Dolby Digital Plus.

Case material - glossy plastic. After 2 weeks of use, a few small scratches appeared on the back cover at the bottom. When bending, no squeaks are heard. Several different back cover colors have been announced: white, black, blue and purple (which is exactly what I got).

Photo and video

The ZTE Grand Memo smartphone has a 12.6MP main camera with LED flash (although 13MP is written on the camera itself) and a 0.9MP front camera. When shooting, you can choose the size of pictures, adjust the white balance, ISO, sharpness, saturation, etc. It is possible to use built-in effects and filters. In addition, there is a function of continuous high-speed shooting, panoramic shooting, a smile detection function. There is the possibility of shooting in HDR mode. While blurry images are visible at the highest settings, on specialized forums it is advised to reduce the quality of images to 8MP. Perhaps this is a software bug and it will be fixed in new firmware.

Smartphone performance ZTE Grand Memo

The smartphone has a quad-core Qualcomm processor APQ8064 operating at 1.5 GHz and GPU Adreno 320 volume random access memory- 2 GB. With such characteristics, the brakes in games, videos, and even more so in the OS interface simply cannot exist! The results in various benchmarks show consistently high results, at the level of top-end devices from other vendors.

Battery and autonomy

The smartphone has a fairly capacious 3200mAh battery. And for this, at everyday use it is enough for 2 days of use in the mode: calls + constant wifi + sometimes 3G + music and books in transport.

The strange thing for me was the power charger with such a battery: only 300mA. The next incomprehensible point related to the battery is its charging after full discharge. The smartphone completely refuses to turn on for about 1.5 hours after putting it on charge. My samsung galaxy S after complete discharge and switching on “on the wire”, it was possible to turn it on after 5 minutes.

Standard software and firmware MIUI

The device uses a proprietary MiFavor shell installed on top of the operating system Google Android 4.1.2. An update to 4.2 is expected.

Home screen and application list

Everything here is more or less standard. There is another inconvenience caused by the size of the screen - to scroll through the screens to the right / to the left, you need to stretch your finger almost from edge to edge, which is not always possible. There are no settings responsible for the paging area. Although, it is worth noting that I did not see them at all on any firmware with which I worked.

Also, the standard launcher does not support the rotation of the home screen and the list of applications in landscape orientation, which is very strange, given the size of the screen.

There are only 4 themes in the delivery.

It is assumed that the shell allows you to control Grand Memo with one hand, but I did not find anything other than such a “feint” in the caller. The keyboard can be pushed to one of the edges of the screen for easier access to it with the thumb of the hand that holds the smartphone. But, due to its rather large size, such an action leads to the fact that the upper part of the phone begins to seriously outweigh in the hand.

The dialer supports both portrait and landscape orientation. Although in landscape orientation there is no Russian language on the buttons.

The firmware contains an excellent program for creating backups, which seriously helped me in my experiments with firmware.

AT standard firmware there are a few more apps added by ZTE that are worth checking out.

Task Manager. From it, you can close the background process, view system settings, including memory usage and other data.

Quite a solid audio player, very similar to my favorite CyanogenMod Apollo. There is work with playlists, playback by artist and album.

After a week of using the default shell, I got the urge to try something else. Unfortunately, CyanogenMod, which is familiar to me, is not yet available for this device. Therefore, it was downloaded and, after a couple of hours of experiments with the bootloader, MIUI version 3.9.6 was installed. After the standard shell from ZTE, MIUI looks very bright, maybe even a little “cartoonish”, but this does not prevent this shell from conquering more and more new users, including me!

The firmware also contains a proprietary utility for Reserve copy And she does her job well too. She does not understand backups from the stock firmware.
