Video reviews

Huawei continues to expand its line of smartphones and release various versions of full-fledged devices. One of these devices is Honor 8 Lite. The middle price segment of the mobile market is full of monotonous devices that copy each other from design to technical filling. However, the novelty from Huawei has become an exception. Why? Will tell you about it Huawei review Honor 8 Lite - specifications, appearance, performance and more.

The Honor line has long been familiar to users due to appearance, as well as performance. If with the second full order many competitors, then there are obvious problems with the first paragraph. The market lacks new ideas and solutions, so gray background stands out bright blue Huawei smartphone Honor 8 Lite. The release of the device entailed a cost of about 18 thousand rubles at the start of sales. Now this figure is 16 thousand. The company has already presented to the public regular version Honor, and now it remains to release the "lite". How is she different from the rest? Let's start with the technical specifications.

What's inside and outside?

First, some dry numbers that will help you get an idea about the device and power:

Characteristics meet all requirements modern smartphone middle price segment. On paper, everything looks great - it remains to check the device in action and draw the appropriate conclusions. On sale there are two versions that differ in the amount of RAM and ROM, but these figures have little effect on the difference in performance.

Equipment

Any acquaintance with a new technical equipment begins with unpacking. The standard box for all models of the Honor series does not hide anything new or interesting. In the kit you will find the phone itself, a charger with a USB cable, a needle for a SIM card tray, instructions. The bundle does not imply the presence of headphones, as is the case with any similar device.

Appearance

The appearance of Honor 8 Lite is one of the main features this device. On the one hand, the device almost exactly repeats the design and solutions of previous generations of the Honor line, but on the other hand, it looks fresher and more interesting than any of the competitors from other companies.

The stylish body of the phone immediately catches the eye. The case is available in 4 colors - black, silver, gold and blue. All edges of the body are rounded, there is 2.5D glass in front. The back panel is made entirely of glass. On the front side, in addition to the screen, there is a brand logo. At the top of the smartphone is a speaker, front camera and indicator.

The rear panel has a fingerprint scanner, a main camera with flash and a logo at the bottom of the body. The phone looks great, but everything has its price.

Firstly, the younger version was deprived of an oleophobic coating on both sides, so the glass is constantly streaked, fingers do not slide well, etc. It is extremely inconvenient to use the device with sweaty hands. The rest of the design and case does not cause any complaints - excellent assembly, lightness of the device and ease of use.

At the bottom there is a speaker hole and a USB connector. On one side, traditionally, there is an on / off button and a volume key. On the other side is a SIM card tray.

Screen quality

Bright and rich display with a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels is not satisfactory. The viewing angles of the screen are maximum, the color reproduction is correct. At maximum brightness, you can work with the phone in the sun, but you can’t get away from the glare on the glass. There is a sensor auto tuning brightness, which is a very convenient feature in everyday use.

Camera overview

In the Light version, the developers decided to reduce the number of cameras to one main and one front. It also has a single flash. Like all smartphones of the company, the camera in Light shoots well in the daytime, a little worse indoors. At night, you can get good pictures with several attempts. You can see examples of photos in our review.

Honor 8 Lite shoots videos at 30 frames per second and FullHD resolution. The number of settings is small, and the software work with video leaves much to be desired - low definition, viewing angle, lack of stabilization. You can see the camera test in any video review and compare it personally with the result of older models.

The front camera is to be commended. All selfie shots are excellent, the viewing angle is wide, clarity and sharpness on high level. Now the Honor 8 Lite review moves on to the most important thing - optimization and performance.

Device performance

Specifications contribute to the fact that the entire smartphone interface does not slow down, applications open quickly and do not freeze. For performance testing, we used AnTuTu program. In it, the device scored 59 thousand points, which is approximately equal to the results of all competitors. But Antutu is just numbers. In practice, many devices under 20 thousand rubles behave strangely and start to slow down after a few months. Therefore, we recommend buying a version with 4GB of RAM in order to have a performance margin. The 7 version of the Android operating system with the EMUI 5.0 shell is convenient and understandable. You can figure it out in just 5 minutes. When flipping through the screens, the phone does not slow down or freeze, which is already good for everyday use. In games, the smartphone does not overheat. In demanding applications, you can lower the graphics quality settings to medium and enjoy "gameplaya".

autonomy

The smartphone has a non-removable battery with a capacity of 3000 mAh. The autonomy of the device depends on the intensity of use. If the phone is in call mode and social networks, then he can work for more than a day. When playing video at maximum brightness and high picture quality, the device works up to 9 hours. You can play for 4 hours, and surf the Internet through a standard browser with LTE enabled - up to 6 hours. With moderate use, the phone's charge will be enough for the whole working day and evening.

Additional functions

On Huawei Honor 8 Lite, the review should end with a description additional features. The device does not have an NFC chip for contactless payment with bank card, but the fingerprint scanner is available, there is even an FM radio that works with connected headphones. The volume of the external speaker is low, but the sound is clear and pleasant to the ear. The main thing is missing extraneous sounds and rattling during music playback or a call. This indicates the quality of the body parts and good assembly. Smartphone Honor 8 Lite loses a little in sound quality. The creators have added interesting features. The first is Wi-Fi+. With its help, the smartphone independently connects to the fastest and most stable WiFi networks. The second chip is Signal+. In this case, the device does the same, only with respect to mobile communications– The reception quality is automatically improved. These features do not fundamentally change the essence of the smartphone, but will be a nice addition to the main functionality.

Conclusion

Is it worth taking? If you are switching to Huawei from another company and do not want to spend money on a flagship model, then you can get acquainted with the company's products from a Lite smartphone. The advantages include:

  • Interesting design;
  • technical filling;
  • front-camera;
  • 2 days of work without recharging.

Flaws:

  • No oleophobic coating;
  • Mediocre video footage.

For the cost of 15 thousand rubles, Honor 8 Lite in Russia is one of the best contenders for a purchase in the price category up to 20 thousand. The device outperforms rivals Meizu and Xiaomi in terms of design and quality of photography, and also quietly competes with them in terms of performance and autonomy.

Smartphones under 20 thousand rubles are now more relevant than the rest. And all then, that people do not have much money, but they would like to use something modern and technological. Honor 8 Lite is one of those devices. functional, smart, affordable smartphone, however it has one problem. AT review I'll tell you which one.

Equipment

Honor devices issued to journalists for testing do not indulge them with complete sets. Therefore, I will simply list what can be found in the box when unpacking Honor 8 Lite:

  • telephone
  • Charger
  • USB cable
  • quick start guide
  • warranty card
  • sim extraction tool

There is no wired headset in the kit, so we select something of our own. I don’t get tired and won’t stop getting tired of recommending headphones from Xiaomi - here. They cost 16 bucks, and the pleasure is a sea.

Design

The continuity of the Honor line is visible to the naked eye. The device is very similar to his grandfather in the face, and to his contemporary -.

Appearance is calm, without frills, but without failures. Just a smartphone that you took out of the box, set up and use. You don’t get much euphoria, but there’s nothing to dig into either. This is how our hero came out.

By tradition, there are no touch buttons under the screen. They are part of the interface, when necessary (though not always) they hide and stop eating away the usable screen area.

There is a plus in this approach - it is convenient to watch videos and play on a smartphone. You calmly hold the device with your hands in a horizontal position and there is no risk of accidentally touching the touch button at the most inopportune moment.

They say glass is installed in front and behind. What exactly - history is silent. Both panels have a 2.5D effect, so the design is streamlined, pleasant, and feels very comfortable in the hand.

The body base is plastic. It is quite simple, runs along the frame of the device. It seems to be plastic, fu, but it still does not cause any rejection. You shouldn't be upset about this.

Is the glass surface scratched? And how. Therefore, the use of a cover or double-sided film is only welcome.

But now I will scold the smartphone and I think that it is absolutely justified.

The protective glass of the Honor 8 Lite screen does not have an oleophobic coating!

It’s hard for me to imagine how in 2017 a smartphone, even if relatively inexpensive, can not have such a must-have functionality. But what is not there is not, so the screen is extremely willing to collect fingerprints, dust and other nonsense.

Hence the conclusion - to glue protective glass(film) necessarily. First, it will save the display from scratches. Second, you have nothing to lose. Fortunately, now there are glasses with the very “oleophobic”.

The fingerprint scanner is located on the back - this is not the best place for it, but Huawei / Honor do not practice otherwise. Nevertheless, the index finger always fits clearly on the contact pad, and the scanner itself works very sensitively and quickly. 10 out of 10 attempts are successful, and the unlock speed is really good. Even my background looks slow-witted against his background.

At the bottom, we have Micro USB (not a tragedy at all!) And symmetrical perforation for a microphone (left) and speaker (right). The speaker is average in quality and volume. At maximum volume, there are no wheezing and other crimes. Hooray!

Display

On this point, it is both worth worrying about and not. I'll explain now.

The LTPS panel itself is great. Yes, we have an IPS screen, so a light fog appears at extreme angles. However, if you regularly look at your smartphones from this angle, be sure to write to me in any situations. Really interesting!

I compared the screen of our hero with the display (pictured below or on the right). The last one we have is actually the flagship and should plug some upstart in the belt at half price.

In fact, it turned out that the Honor 8 Lite display has a larger margin of brightness, and at the maximum deviation, the inversion does not turn the colors into green.

We continue to praise the display. A resolution of 1920 x 1080 (and you don't need more), coupled with a diagonal of 5.2 inches, gives us excellent picture smoothness. 423 ppi is a chic indicator for all tasks, except for VR, perhaps. On the other hand, QHD screens have not yet got rid of graininess, and it is for this reason that I consider the current incarnation of technology virtual reality nothing more than a prank. Expensive pampering.

And now it's time to scold the screen.

Due to the lack of an oleophobic coating, a ton of fingerprints accumulate on the glass, so it is very difficult to see anything on the display in the sun.

You need to constantly rub the screen with a cloth or just on your thigh. Constantly!

Only the same protective glass with “oleophobic” will help out. Sold separately if so.

A few words about the Kirin 655 processor. This 8-core "stone" was introduced in January 2016. He is about a year and a half old, but he feels quite confident. In fact, it's a great competitor to the hugely popular Qualcomm Snapdragon 625, just developed in-house by Huawei.

The chipset will definitely be relevant all this year. I'm not going to judge what happens next.

In games, performance is enough. So, in the World of Tank Blitz You can safely play on medium graphics settings. The frame rate will be within 24 - 35 FPS.

4K video of our hero is not scary. Everything plays without problems.

As for the interface and smoothness of work, I can say the following. There are no lags and brakes at all. However, it is felt that the smartphone is not reactive. It works quite cheerfully, it's just clear that this is clearly not a flagship. On the other hand, after unlocking the first 10 seconds, it also cannot come to its senses. And this is a smartphone of a completely different level. So think...

Synthetics clearly shows that our hero is not so far gone from many top-end devices of the past year. This is good.

On hardware, the only thing that upsets is the lack of NFC. In 2017, you buy a phone and are left out of contactless smartphone payments. Android Pay came to Russia, they feel great, many use it, but you don’t.

Yes, you can still wait a year, but I would like to use this feature right now. Okay, not fatal. Move on.

cameras

The front camera uses an 8MP sensor. For some reason, Honor does not disclose data on lens aperture, although the indicators are quite standard. The front camera has an aperture of f / 2.0, and the main camera has f / 2.2. The optics, of course, are a bit dark, but when shooting macro objects, the blur is still not bad.

I liked the quality of the pictures on the front sensor. Good detail and white balance. Less contrast would be great. On the other hand, excessive contrast can be easily removed in the camera settings, so we will not write it down as a minus.

The main camera is 12 megapixels. Phase autofocus is used, the pixel size is 1.25 microns - nothing outstanding, but nothing bad either.

The quality of the pictures is average, there are not enough stars from the sky. Photos look good on a smartphone screen, not so great on a computer.

As for me, two things are missing: detail and more elaborate algorithms. White balance almost always suffers: separate sections are dark, others are overexposed.

HDR mode brings the picture to the level that should be present on the machine. But to name frames with a real extended dynamic range, I somehow can’t turn my tongue.

HDR didn't work well

HDR worked well

As soon as the lighting is no longer enough, the automation stifles the noise and turns the photo into a watercolor painting. If you do not enlarge the image, everything is fine, but if you zoom in, you can immediately see the lack of detail. Such is the feature.

For the originals of all examples, please click here.

Video device can record in Full HD at 30 frames per second. Rollers turn out normal, no more.

Shell

The device works on Android based 7.0, however, it is tightly closed by its own EMUI 5.0 shell. And it's never bad.

Yes, some citizens have questions about the design of icons, interface elements and a suspicious similarity with Apple's iOS.

The rest of the shell is perfectly optimized and very functional.

For example, in file manager there is a "Personal" folder, which can be additionally protected with a password and a fingerprint. The files in it are encrypted and the wife or the villain will definitely not be able to get access there. Useful thing!

In addition, the system is constantly vigilant and issues recommendations from the category “Do you know that this application consumes excessive processor energy? Can we close it?" The tips are really helpful and really work. It is for this that I have loved the shell from Huawei for a very long time.

In general, having your own launcher is one of the main advantages of any Huawei and Honor.

You always know that you get a device that works stably and is perfectly optimized in terms of software. Here is an analogy. The MIUI shell from Xiaomi is also very good, but for the first 2-3 months after the release, you are guaranteed to catch a wide variety of glitches. Then, with updates, the situation improves, but this takes some time. With EMUI, this happens extremely rarely, and then only before the official start of sales, when only journalists have time to use gadgets.

That would be even less software garbage, pre-installed initially, and it would be very good. Fortunately, most of the advertising and affiliate applications can be removed.

Sound quality

You don't have to worry about this either. The headphones sound good, at the level of any modern smartphone. Yes, if you need something special, then this is not for Honor, but I repeat, the sound is still very decent.

Of the improvements, there is only one setting - a certain SWS. It increases the volume, adds bass. In other words, it may or may not be used.

In this case, the glow time of the screen will be about 3 hours. Notifications and all wireless interfaces, including GPS, are activated. If you use the device more intensively (5-6 hours of screen operation), then the smartphone will easily last 1 full working day. I think it's a great score!

Outcome

When they ask me what phone to buy under 20 thousand rubles so that with a guarantee to go and buy, I often advise either Huawei / Honor or Asus. You won't find anything better in this price range. Yes, there is also China with all Xiaomi, Meizu and other brands, but there are many risks for a simple layman, so we return to the same brands again.

Actually, my favorite is . For 17 thousand rubles, it is simply impossible to find something more interesting in terms of characteristics in official retail. Has my opinion changed after the Honor 8 Lite test? No, because our today's hero looks weaker against the background of 6X. The latter has two excellent cameras, NFC and no issues with the oleophobic coating. Plus, the body is made of metal. 8 Lite cannot boast of anything like that.

Let me remind you that the current Honor 8 Lite price- 15,990 rubles. Only a thousand less than the 6X. On the side of the "eight" there is only one advantage - a more compact body. Still, there are plenty of users for whom the iPhone 6 looks like a big beast.

Honor 8 Lite would cost around 13 thousand rubles - yes, one could safely recommend it for purchase. But all the raspberries for our hero are spoiled by a competitor from their own product line. What can you do?

Introduction

In this case, everything is quite simple: Huawei already has an advanced Honor 8, an even more sophisticated Honor 8 Pro, so it was logical to release a simpler device, which was called Honor 8 Lite. Despite the Lite prefix, the smartphone has not the most primitive parameters: 8 cores, 4 GB of RAM, a high resolution FullHD screen, relatively capacious 3000 mAh battery.

The cost of Honor 8 Lite in Russia is 16,000 rubles.

Design, dimensions, controls

From the point of view of appearance, the device 8 Lite repeats all the previous "eights": a slick body, glass, bright colors: blue, gold, white. There is also a version in black. In the picture, it is difficult to distinguish 8 Lite from just 8, mainly the absence of a second camera is striking. However, in real life, 8 Lite is much more primitive. This is expressed in the materials used. For example, in the younger version, the glass on both sides seems to be plastic to the touch, the side faces are also plastic, and, in my opinion, very simple and cheap. In addition, the main disadvantage is the lack of an oleophobic coating on both the front and back panels. If the front glass gets dirty, the finger slides badly, then the rear glass feels constantly wet. I don’t even know how to explain it correctly: you just have to take the phone in your hand, and it immediately becomes slippery.

Frankly, I don’t understand what’s happening with Huawei: Honor 8 and 8 Pro have an oleophobic coating, while the flagships P10/P10 Plus and the affordable 8 Lite don’t. Silly economy or strange miscalculation?

Otherwise, there are no problems: excellent assembly, no squeaks and backlashes, thickness is only 7.6 mm, weight is small - 147 grams, fits perfectly in the hand.

On the top of the front panel there are a camera, sensors, an indicator of missed events (on the right in the corner) and speaker. It is loud, the interlocutor is heard clearly and legibly, the sound is mid-frequency.

At the bottom end on the left is a microphone, in the center is a microUSB connector (why not Type-C?), on the right is a speakerphone.

The power button and volume rocker are on the right edge, and on the left is a combo slot (2XnanoSIM,nanoSIM+microSD). At the top there is a 3.5 mm headphone jack and an additional microphone.

On the reverse side are the flash and cameras, both elements are flush with the body. Just below is a fingerprint scanner.

Display

This device uses a 5.2-inch screen. The physical size is 64.5x115 mm, the frame is 15 mm at the top, 16.5 mm at the bottom, and approximately 4 mm each on the right and left. There is an anti-reflective coating, effective.

The display resolution of Honor 8 Lite is FullHD, i.e. 1080x1920 pixels, the aspect ratio is 16:9, the density is 423 pixels per inch. Matrix IPS (LTPS LCD TFT) without air gap.

Maximum brightness of white color is 620 cd/m2, maximum brightness of black color is 0.5 cd/m2, contrast ratio is 1240:1.

The brightness graph is below normal, the gamma strongly depends on the brightness (on minimum values 2.2, and at the maximum - 2.8), judging by the color levels, there is a clear dip in red, the temperature is within 7200 - 6800 - 7500 K. The data obtained is much higher than the values of the sRGB triangle, but the triangle itself is shifted upwards.

Judging by the calibrator data, the color reproduction is typical for a simple IPS matrices, brightness and contrast are excellent, gamma jumps a lot - which means that at minimum brightness there will be a loss in bright areas, and at maximum - in dark areas.

The device has an eye protection mode that reduces the level of UV radiation of the screen, prevents eye fatigue during prolonged use of the smartphone.

Viewing angles

Battery

This model uses a 3,000 mAh non-removable lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery.

In my mode of operation, the gadget functioned for 24 hours: about 30 minutes of calls, constant synchronization with Wi-Fi (from 9.00 to 02.00, Twitter, mail, Skype, Whatsapp), several hours of LTE. The glow of the screen in this mode is 3 - 3.5 hours. If you turn on LTE and work in the same mode from 12 noon, the device will be discharged to 20-30% by 12 at night. The glow of the screen will be about 3 hours.

  • Video - 9 hours at maximum brightness
  • Games - 4 hours 30 minutes at maximum brightness
  • WEB surfing - 5 hours 40 minutes at maximum brightness

Communication options

The device works not only in 2G networks (850/900/1800/1900 MHz)/3G (HSPA+ up to 42 Mbps), but also 4G CAT 6 up to 300 Mbps:

  • 4G TDD LTE: Band 38/39/40
  • 4G FDD LTE: Band 1/3/5/7/8/20

The gadget has implemented the "Signal +" function - it improves the quality of signal reception. Another feature is Wi-Fi +. The gadget automatically connects to the most stable and powerful network (or mobile transmission data, or Wi-Fi).

The rest is standard for any expensive Android smartphone: GPS and GLONASS, Wi-Fi b/g/n (only 2.4 GHz), Bluetooth 4.1, USB 2.0 with OTG support.

Memory and memory card

Considering the cost of 16,000 rubles, in Smartphone Honor 8 Lite uses a large amount of RAM - 4 GB LPDDR3 (speed 5800 MB / s). Built-in memory 32 GB (read 135 MB / s, write only 51 MB / s), memory cards up to 128 GB are supported.

cameras

Unlike Honor 8 and 8 Pro, the Lite models one main camera module is used at 12 MP (f = 2.2, pixel size 1.25 microns). Front camera 8 MP (f=2.0). There is a single flash.

Traditionally for Huawei, the camera shoots very well during the day, decently in the evening and quite normally at night. Pleased with accurate white balance, correct focus, a small amount of noise and artifacts.

Selfies come out cool: with the right BB, sharp, wide-angle. Pure pleasure.

As for the video (FullHD 30 fps), it seemed to me somewhat primitive: a small viewing angle, low definition. "Frontalka" writes only HD.

Performance

The “heart” of the device is the chipset of its own production - HiSilicon Kirin 655 (Q4 2016): 16 nm with FinFET + technology, 64-bit, 8 cores (2.12 (4xA53) 1.7 (4xA53)), Mali-T830 graphics.
