Laser printing in the office

Today, a laser printer is an almost mandatory and indispensable attribute of any office. The most actively exploited category of such devices belongs to the working group scale devices. These models have print speeds ranging from 15 to 35 ppm and generally support network printing.

A feature of recent times has been the widespread use of color laser printers on the scale of the working group. The process of replacing monochrome devices with color ones was especially active when the price of the latter decreased significantly, and the cost and quality of black-and-white prints became almost identical. According to a number of industry analysts and specialists from manufacturing companies, this trend will continue.

The segment of color laser printers has recently become one of the most dynamically developing in the printer market, its share is constantly increasing from year to year. This happens for a number of interrelated reasons. First, as a result of a significant reduction in the prices of such devices, color laser printers have become affordable and attractive to a wider range of users. Secondly, the volume of printing of various office documents in color (tables, graphs, presentations, reports, etc.) is growing. In addition, such devices provide high quality printing, are reliable in operation and allow you to receive qualitatively different documents - in color.

For printer equipment in the workgroup category, an important indicator is the cost of printing. The bulk of printing in the office (90-95%) is usually black and white documents. To print them, a monochrome printer is enough, the cost of printing on which (not to mention the printers themselves) was lower than on color devices. Now the situation has changed - the cost of printing black and white documents on a color laser printer has become about the same as on a conventional monochrome device of the same class. So color laser printers today are able to compete with their monochrome counterparts in all respects.

Now consumers just have to make the right choice in the variety of monochrome and color workgroup-scale printers offered by many manufacturers.

MV Company announced the establishment special price for MB 218 and MB 216 printers. Now it is possible to purchase MB 218 with standard toner and MB 216 complete with two additional toners at reduced prices.

The MB 218 and MB 216 are compact, low cost black and white printers.

These devices allow you to print with a resolution of 600x1200 dots per inch. This resolution, in combination with the PostScript 3 page description language (optional), provides best quality both text and photographs. The resulting prints are able to satisfy even the most demanding user. The MB 216 printer is equipped with a memory capacity of 8 MB, which can be increased up to 40 MB. The memory capacity of the MB 218, which is 16 MB as standard, can be increased up to 48 MB. A large amount of memory allows you to quickly process almost any job. Max Speed Both devices print at 18 pages per minute and print the first page in less than 7 seconds. The MB 216/218 has a wide selection of paper feeders. The paper feeder is a standard paper tray with a capacity of up to 250 sheets and a manual feed tray that eliminates the possibility of paper jams. Paper exits either to the 150-sheet output tray (face down) or the 50-sheet output tray (face up). In addition, it is possible to additionally equip the model with a 100-sheet multi-purpose tray and a 500-sheet tray. Printers allow the use of paper with a density of 60 to 120 g/m². It should be noted that working on these devices will allow the user to save money, since both models have separate toner and photoconductor, which reduces the cost of printing. Expendable materials MB are simple and easy to replace, which the user can easily carry out independently. Thanks to the built-in Russian fonts, the MB 218/216 printer can print in Russian from DOS applications, which makes this printer a universal device. Hardware Russification and emulation support dot matrix printers also provide compatibility with older DOS programs.

MB, a well-known supplier of copiers and workflow solutions, doesn't get much publicity, so the announcement of the company's entry into the printer market immediately attracted attention.

According to IDC, MB is the third most popular brand on the copier market in Russia. In 2000, in terms of the number of sold copiers with a print speed of over 10 copies per minute (in the market as a whole, excluding personal copiers), MW ranked first. Growth amounted to 56%, which is several times higher than the market average. And over the past two years, deliveries of MB equipment, depending on the segment, amounted to from 25 to 35% of the total market volume.

The MB company acts as an OEM partner of a number of foreign companies, such as Konica, Oki, etc., which produce equipment for it at the enterprises of Southeast Asia and Japan.

As is known, the copier market both in the world and in Russia is growing at a much slower pace than the printer market.

And now MB, as the company's leaders say, "invades" the printer market. According to Dmitry Myslin, MB Marketing Director, over 6,000 MB monochrome laser printers with print speeds from 8 to 45 ppm were sold in the first six months of 2001 alone, which is almost twice as high as in the same period last year. . In addition, 2.5 times more color printers were sold in the first half of 2001 than in the same period in 2000.

From the point of view of IDC Russia Director Robert Farish (see CRN/RE No. 11/2001, p. 14), it was the segment of color laser printers that became the most profitable printer market in 2001. If previously these devices were mainly interested in graphics specialists, now color printers are turning into a commodity of interest to corporate customers. It is assumed that by 2005 the volume of the Russian market for color laser printers and copiers will reach $70 million, with the main sales of this equipment going to the corporate sector. In 2000, HP was the leader in the color laser printer segment, but Xerox/Tektronix achieved more than the leader in sales growth - 130% (HP - 110%). In addition, there is a significant (about 185%) growth in sales of Konica color printers. At the same time, it is known that for this success the supplier had to sacrifice his name, since all of its equipment was sold under the MB brand.

Among MB products, the most popular in the first half of the year were monochrome printers MB 326 with a print speed of 26 ppm and MB 508 with a print speed of 8 ppm.

The MB 326 is a compact A3 network laser printer. The first page out speed is 6.5 seconds. Resolution 1200 x 1200 dpi. The standard configuration includes the PostScript language, the MB 326N comes with a network board. Among the additional devices is a four-cell mailbox that allows you to separate documents from different user groups. A confidential printing function is also provided, when the user receives his documents only after entering the password on the printer.

The MB 508 is a 1200 x 600 dpi personal printer. The model is compatible with Windows, Windows NT and DOS (moreover, the printer is hardware-Russian for DOS and has 12 Russian fonts). The press is carried out on the most different paper (even made from recycled materials) of the size from A6 to A4, with a density up to 120 g/sq.m. m. The mass of the printer is 4.3 kg.

Office applications require very large amounts of personalized information to be printed. In this case, the documents must be sorted, brochure. Very often, as MB experts note, in such a situation, the client is forced to buy a copier-printer system with similar capabilities (these are expensive systems with a print speed of 40 to 100 ppm). Responding to market demand, MB offers two high performance models with a range of finishing devices.

The MB 375 runs at 75 ppm and is designed for peak workloads of up to a million prints per month. The MB 375 display allows you to fully control the operation of the printer. A printer interface is provided - ProfiRIP, which has advanced software that allows you to turn the MB 375 into a processing, printing and document management center.

The MB 738 A3 color laser printer has a resolution of 1200 x 1200 dpi. First print out time - 12 s (for color), support for PostScript 3 language. The device is also equipped with finishing devices, and, according to the company, outperforms competitors in print speed by 2 times (28 color or 38 black and white pages per minute ). The main and optional trays can hold 3,100 sheets. As additional equipment, a 2,000-sheet finisher is provided that allows you to staple finished prints and punch holes for folders in them, as well as a four-bin mailbox.

introduced new line color multifunction devices MB OfiiceCenter. It was the first press conference of the company over the past two years, and MV representatives did not limit themselves to just announcing new products, they also spoke about the past restructuring of business processes and a new development strategy.

We started with a little excursion into history. The MV company was founded in 1990 and began its work with the service of copiers, soon expanding its activities to the supply of equipment to Russia. The trademark "MV" was registered in 1996, and since 1997 the company began to produce copiers under its own brand. Later, the company began selling more air conditioners and office furniture. This was done to ensure that customers have the opportunity to equip the office with everything necessary, resorting to the services of just one company. In 2006, a rapid reorganization of the company began, the management changed, and the new team of top managers almost completely changed the course of development of MV - Office Equipment.

Vyacheslav Siver, General Director of the company, spoke in some detail about why the representatives of MV have not shown public activity for so long and what exactly the company has been doing for the past two years.

It's no secret that Moscow is one of the most expensive cities in the world, and this has a serious impact on companies trying to do business in the capital. This was the main reason for the relocation of the MV headquarters to the near Moscow region. This idea, of course, does not belong to the management of MV, and they do not deny it. On the contrary, they emphasize that they largely act according to the experience of Western companies, whose headquarters are most often located very far from big cities. Following the example of Xerox, MV has built several houses for out-of-town employees, as well as cottages, which it is going to sell at cost to its best employees. As a result, serious savings on the maintenance of offices and warehouses made it possible to fix prices for many goods, in particular consumables, which in turn improved the loyalty of the company's customers.

Again, for reasons of economy, several regional representative offices were closed in 2007, and a dealer network began to develop instead. However, for the qualifications of dealership personnel service centers still answers "MV". Employees of the company are trained in their own training center, and visiting master classes are arranged for partners.

However, no matter how beneficially the restructuring and relocation may have had a beneficial effect on the company's future affairs, two years of turbulent internal changes have significantly reduced MV's market share. You can even say that many have forgotten about the existence of this brand. Of course, customers who have been working with MV for a long time still receive full service, but there was practically no influx of new ones. "MV" produced and produces large office equipment, expensive copiers, which ordinary user can only be interested out of curiosity. A few years ago, the share of "MV" on Russian market was about 20%, not least due to a well-developed service scheme. Now this share does not exceed 7% and is maintained almost exclusively by old customers. MV's plans for the next two years include returning its 20% market share, while further ideas are less ambitious - gradually increasing its share to 25%. Regarding the development of the line of devices, the bulk of which are still large and expensive copiers, Alexander Stepanov, marketing director, said that MV, like other manufacturers, plans to develop the desktop device segment. So far, there are no such devices in the company's lineup, but the development department is working hard on them.

Alexander Stepanov presented three new multifunctional devices of the MB OfficeCenter series. The MB OfficeCenter 120C was shown first. This full-color A4 MFP is equipped with fax, printer and scanner functions and is close to the cost of prints to monochrome devices. 120C is designed for medium and small workgroups and is equipped with a network interface.

According to the manufacturer, this is the most compact device in its class. The difference in size is hardly striking, but it is significant when placing the MFP directly in the office, especially a small one, where literally every centimeter counts. In addition, the required working space in 120C is significantly less than in other similar devices. That is, a certain distance must be observed so that a person is comfortable working near the MFP and to provide access to the device during service. At 120C, all main units open up, so that when replacing a cartridge or removing jammed paper, none of the close-seated employees will be disturbed. Yes, and this procedure itself is simple enough to do without calling a specially trained person - however, now in most more or less compact MFPs, these procedures require minimal knowledge and effort. And one more thing allows you to place this MFP close to the workplace - the air outlet in it is made vertical, so that all the warm air goes up and does not bother anyone.

And most importantly - what is the secret of the low cost of full-color prints. Firstly, the 120C uses a low-cost toner, and secondly, the device is four-pass. That is, only one photoconductor is used for all four toners, instead of the usual "one toner cartridge + one photoconductor" system. Using one photoconductor significantly reduces the cost of a print, since in this case you will have to replace one consumable instead of four. On the other hand, it may also wear out faster, because the load on it is much greater than in single-pass systems. But representatives of "MV" promise a high resource of their consumables, including this photodrum.

This device has one more feature that is not very necessary in an office MFP - a PictBridge interface for connecting digital cameras. In case one of the employees wants to print their photos, but does not want to bother with transferring files to a computer, and then to a printer. USB flash drives cannot be connected through this interface; it works exclusively with cameras.

It was not possible to find out the exact price of the device - about 1000 dollars. But company representatives emphasized that it is 15% cheaper than similar MFPs from other manufacturers.

The other two MFPs, the MB OfficeCenter 25C and 40C, are large office equipment for large workgroups. In principle, they can also be called mini-printing houses, especially since their functionality is quite enough for this. The models are identical in technical specifications and differ only in printing speed, which, by the way, is reflected in their names. The OfficeCenter 25C prints and copies A4 monochrome and color pages at 25 ppm, while the OfficeCenter 40C prints at 40 ppm.

The machines use a new polymerized toner and an oil-free fixing system, resulting in matte prints that are close to print quality.

The machines have a USB flash drive connector so that documents can be scanned directly to a removable drive. But the best thing about this connector is that you can also connect a keyboard through it to enter user data, email addresses etc.

The automatic document feeders for scanning in these MFPs are non-reversing, that is, two-sided documents do not turn over, which can be very important when processing dilapidated originals or originals on thin paper. And, of course, the scanning speed is significantly increased.

Finally, both the 25C and 40C can be installed in tandem to increase performance. This process is quite simple - just two devices are connected in local network, after which they work as one device.

The cost of devices, depending on the configuration, is: 25C - 7-7.5 thousand euros; 40C - 9.5-10 thousand euros.

Well, the most interesting question, probably, to the Russian manufacturer of MFPs - where and how are these devices manufactured? The MV company has a full production cycle - from development to sales and service. The devices are produced on leased lines at foreign, of course, factories, in particular, in Korea. The development of the device takes place in the company's office. MV engineers, of course, do not reinvent the MFP, they take existing devices as a basis and modify them in accordance with their desires and the capabilities of the production lines. Consumables are produced according to the same scheme, but it is worth paying special attention to the fact that MV takes care of all maintenance, including the replacement of cartridges. Therefore, their consumables are not supplied to retail, and those that can be found are fake. Alas, this trouble concerns not only large Western brands, and domestic manufacturer I have to participate in raids on the Savelovsky market.
