Based on the name, a reasonable question arises: why do you need to connect a router through a router, what is the meaning of these actions. The fact is that users are often faced with a situation where the Wi-Fi signal is not able to cover the entire area of their homes. This is not uncommon for large private houses, for example, with an area of 100 m3 or more. Regardless of the model, routers have a limited coverage area, and in order to increase it, repeaters are used that can greatly "expand" the space. For the same purpose, two routers are connected to each other using a connection to the same network. The second router performs the function of a repeater, thus, both and its expansion are achieved simultaneously.

It's important to know! When setting up such a connection scheme, when you need to connect two routers in order to expand the existing Wi-Fi network, you will need to configure the router in repeater mode. But this method is not suitable for all devices, some models do not support this function.

To connect a router to a router, a LAN cable is most often used. It is easy to do: no special skills are required, and it does not take much time. But not everyone knows how to connect a router to another router via a cable. It is naive to believe that it is enough to connect one device to another, and everything will work. No, of course, you will need to delve a little into the process and understand the intricacies, since there are two completely different connection schemes. Before taking any action, you should familiarize yourself with both, and then choose the most suitable option for yourself.

Network of routers cascaded LAN-WAN

This scheme is preferable for the majority of users, in any case, it is used more often. First you need to figure out how to properly connect two routers with a cable: from the LAN outlet to the WAN input. This is done for a simplified way to set up the Internet, which will be a feasible task even for beginners in this matter. According to this principle, a tree-like “wi-fi” bridge is built: in this way, you can connect an innumerable number of routers using one access point.

But first, this chain needs to be established. It is noteworthy that the last device in this chain uses the settings of the previous one, this is the simplification of the task. The process of how to connect and connect two routers actually boils down to enabling the dhcp function on the main router:

After the changes are saved, wait until the connection appears and work quietly.

Communication between routers according to the equivalent LAN-LAN scheme

With this option, it is necessary to connect the routers with LAN ports, using a cable to sequentially insert it into the LAN port of one device, and in the opposite direction. Such a connection creates one logical segment, while wireless networks must have different SSID names with the same addressing. To configure and connect, unlike the previous method, you need, on the contrary, to disable the DHCP server. To do this, first go to the web interface of the primary router, the tab with the DHCP server, remember the pool of distributed addresses. By default, the range of values is between 2 and 100:

  1. Open the settings of the secondary device, go to "Network" - "Local Area Network".
  2. If they have the same IP address, it needs to be changed. The address is not selected from the DHCP server pool, that is, we set the value to 192.168.1.101 or something like that.
  3. Go to "DHCP Settings", disable the server by checking the box next to "Disable".
  4. Click on the "Save" button, then reload. Connect succeeded.

Wireless connection

There is another recognized option on how to connect a router to another router via wifi. Connect them to each other by creating a wireless “wi-fi” bridge, as a result of which, it turns out to install routers on long distance from each other, while increasing the coverage area. Cables in this case will not be needed, in this positive moment: they will not interfere. But this option is not without its negative sides: it is easy to connect, but the network loses stability, which is accompanied by a decrease in speed. If there are good reasons not to use a cable for the connection, this is not the worst option. When using the wireless method of connecting and connecting routers, it should be borne in mind that not all devices support WDS mode, this mainly concerns older models.

Wireless bridge based on WDS

A wireless network bridge is created simply by connecting two routers into one Wi-Fi network, but the process itself is complex and lengthy. The settings methods in detail differ on different routers, but the principle of creating such a bridge with your own hands is unchanged: this requires WDS support.

To expand coverage, it is recommended to connect and connect one router to another via Wi-Fi, using devices of the same brand. In other words, if the main router is Asus for example, the operation and connection will be more stable when using additional device the same brand.

Configuring the main router for WDS mode

Different routers have their own settings, a lot of manuals have been released on this subject. But the process and sequence of actions described in them are so complicated and confusing that a novice user is simply lost. And the principle of how to set up a router (main) in order to connect with an additional one comes down to one, regardless of the device model:

Configuring a Second Router for WDS Mode

Everything is a little more complicated here, but figuring out how to set up a WDS wireless bridge for a second router before connecting is also not difficult. Setting up a router in bridge mode for an additional device looks like this:

  1. First change the IP address of this device.
  2. Set an identical channel as the main one, the same value is indicated.
  3. Connect the bridge function (WDS) by checking the box.
  4. Indicate the network name (SSID) used by the main unit.
  5. Next, you need to enter the mac-address of the main router.
  6. Specify its password, key type and Wi-Fi network password.
  7. When the WDS function is enabled, a Search button will appear. Click on it to scan available networks.
  8. Choose desired network- "Connect".
  9. Specify the "Key type" and "Password" of the network of the main device, then - "Save".
  10. Go to "DHCP Settings", disable the DHCP server.
  11. Click the "Save" button and reload. Connect succeeded.

Connecting an access point (AP) to a router

Before connecting both routers to create and configure a wireless bridge, connect them together, you will need to update the firmware and proceed with the settings of the access point, which helps to expand the coverage radius. The connection will help to create a distributed network using multiple APs to get a connection through both devices.

Connecting APs to each other

In order to connect two devices, the process begins by entering on a computer or laptop in the browser's search engine the address of the router through: http://192.168.1.1. Then press Enter, in the registration window specify the user data: admin and admin. Next, go to the web interface of the router:

  1. Select "Wireless networks" in the settings.
  2. In the network name - SSID - specify a name, for example, WL550gE, and in the WPA2-PSK column, come up with a password for wireless network. Remember it or write it down.
  3. In the IP Config folder, open WAN & LAN, where the IP address of the first access point is indicated. Remember it.
  4. In the "Wireless Networks" folder, select "Bridge".
  5. In the new window, find AP Mode, where select "Mixed Mode", and as a bridge - the WDS Only option.
  6. Here select a fixed WDS channel, value 1, 6 or 11.
  7. Activate the "Connect to access points in the list of remote bridges" function.
  8. Enter the MAC address of the second access point with the value 00:0E:A6:A1:3F:6E - "Add".
  9. Click on the “Finish” button, then “Save and Reload”.

Setting up a second AP

To connect a second router to an access point and connect to the first, a similar sequence of actions is used. Then go directly to the device settings:

  1. Open the menu and specify the network name (SSID), it must match the first AP.
  2. In the IP Config menu, open the DHCP server.
  3. In the "Enable DHCP server" line, select the "No" option, then - "Apply".
  4. In the "Bridge" menu, specify the same channel as the first AP.
  5. Enter the MAC address of the first access point with the value 00:0E:A6:A1:3F:87 - "Add".
  6. In the "Password" field, you must enter the code word invented by the user for "WPA2-PSK" in the first router.
  7. Click on the "Finish" button, and then "Save and Reload".

Conclusion

The process of how to connect and connect one router through another can be complicated or easy depending on the option chosen. But first you need to ask yourself questions: is it worth it and why do we combine routers? If the answer is yes, and the goal is clear, it remains to choose the most preferred method to combine both devices into one.

Wireless Distribution System (WDS) - a technology that allows you to expand the coverage of a wireless network by combining several WiFi hotspots access to a single network without the need for a wired connection between them (which is mandatory in the traditional scheme of building a network). In other words, if you have installed a Wi-Fi router, but the Wi-Fi network does not work in some places (rooms or outdoors) or very weak signal, in such cases it is advisable to install a second router (or access point), which will act as a repeater (repeater) and expand the Wi-Fi coverage area. At the same time, thanks to WDS technology, there is no need to pull network cable from the first router, the connection will occur via a Wi-Fi network (it is worth noting that it is pointless to install a second router where a very weak signal is pointless, the second router should be located in the area of \u200b\u200ba confident or average Wi-Fi level). In this article, I will describe step by step how to configure 2 TP-Link TL WR841DN routers (for TP-Link TL WR841D router this instruction will also be relevant) to work using WDS technology.

First, let's set up the main router to which the Internet is connected.

Setting up the main router.

We connect to the web interface of the rotator, set up the Internet (if it is not configured), set up a Wi-Fi network, this process is described step by step in the article TP-Link WR841ND firmware update and initial router setup (Internet, Wi-Fi) and aboutb TP-Link WR841N firmware update and initial router setup (Internet, Wi-Fi) .

AT this example I will use the Wi-Fi network name- PK_HELP.COM_TP-LINK, it is also necessary to manually specify Channel, I used 7.

On the menu - Protection wireless mode , in the PSK password line we write the password, in this case I used www.pk.help.coM.

This completes the settings for the main TP-Link TL WR841DN / TP-Link TL WR841D router. Now you need to connect the Internet to it and proceed to setting up the second router.

Setting up a second router.

Connecting to the web interface of the second router, go to the tab "DHCP" - "Setting DHCP" and disable DHCP server, since the network must have one device "distributing" network settings.

After that we go to "Network" - "Local network" and change IP TP link address TL WR841DN/ TP-Link TL WR841D on 192.168.0.2 since the network should not have two devices with the same IP addresses (I remind you that the first router has IP 192.168.0.1). After pressing the button "Save" the router will reboot.

The next step is setting up a Wi-Fi network. We write the name of the Wi-Fi network, in this example PK_HELP.COM_TP-LINK-2, in the line Channel set 7 . Put a tick " Enable WDS"and press the button" Search".

You will see the entire list of available WiFi networks, find the previously created PK_HELP.COM_TP-LINK and press the button "Connect".

As a result, the SSiD and BSSID fields will be automatically filled in, it remains to select the type of security key and enter the password that was used in the main router, in this example, the type is WPA-PSK / WPA2-PSK and the password pk.help.com. We press the button "Save".

The configuration of the second TP-Link TL WR841DN router can be considered completed.

Now it remains to spread these routers and get an extended Wi-Fi network.

At the end I want to add that in this example TP Link routers TL WR841DN/ TP-Link TL WR841D are used as a special case, on this moment many routers support the WDS function and you can do similar operations with them, the only thing I would like to add is that it is desirable to use routers from the same manufacturer for WDS communication, and ideally the same model.

Not enough. If, for example, you have a two-story house or a large apartment, then the coverage area is often not enough, so you cannot use the Internet in certain rooms . Easy shopping best model device is not as efficient as adding another access point on the same network.

Routers are interconnected by cable, but in different ways.

Two routers can be connected using a cable or wirelessly, via WI-Fi connection. Consider all the options in turn.

Immediately decide which router will be the "master". It is better to choose a device with more power, unless, of course, you have two identical models. There are two types of connection using a LAN cable - LAN-WAN or LAN-LAN, but the first one is more popular, so we will start with it.

Setting up a LAN-WAN connection

How does this type of connection work? One of the routers becomes the main one - it receives the Internet, and the second device plays the role of a secondary network and receives data from the "main" access point.

This connection has the following advantages:

  • The secondary network can be controlled and restricted access to some sites, for example, if you are worried about children not being able to access "adult" sites.
  • The connection becomes more secure from outside interference.
  • It is this connection method that in most cases is recommended by experts, since it is considered the most correct and problems rarely occur when using it (compared to the LAN-LAN type).

To connect LAN-WAN, make sure that when the main router is running, you can access the Internet without interference, and the following parameters are set in the settings (they are universal for most models):

  • a server called DHCP is enabled;
  • The IP address is distributed automatically.

If you are not sure that you have the same settings or do not know how to check them, follow these steps:

  • Enter your IP address in the browser line and you will see the device parameters.
  • In the LAN section, there should be a checkmark next to the DHCP server.
  • The WAN section sets the connection type to Dynamic IP.

We figured out the first router, let's move on to the second one - it's better to reset all settings on it. This is especially true if you previously used the services of another provider (it could have completely different parameters). Therefore, press the Reset button located next to the connectors and hold it for about ten seconds, after which the basic settings will be restored.

Now you need to properly connect the cable to both devices. In the main router, we use the LAN connector, in the second - the WAN cell. Check the light indicators - on the body of each of them a light should light up near the inscriptions of the same name.

In the main router, we do not change anything else, and in the second we check if the connection type is set to dynamic (we have already considered how to do this earlier). Do not forget to come up with a password to access the Internet - for this you need to go to the settings of the Wireless section, the Wireless Security item.

LAN-LAN connection

This type of connection is different in that here the equipment for accessing the Internet is located in one network segment, and in the previous case, the second router created its own separate network. To establish a LAN-LAN connection in the main device, all data remains by default.

We change the parameters on the second router using the following steps:

  • We connect it to the PC.
  • We go into the hardware settings through the browser, disable the DHCP server.
  • Change the IP address - increase by one the last digit in the original combination specified in the standard settings.

After that, connect both routers with a cable through the LAN ports, you will connect the cable to the first and main device for Internet access.

Connecting two routers via Wi-Fi

In this option, we do not need any cables to connect a pair of devices, so this method seems to many more attractive. As a result, we still have a single network, but with the addition of another access point. Thanks to it, the Wi-Fi coverage area increases without loss of quality. The only requirement for such a connection is that the second router acts as a repeater of the main signal. This feature was once called repeater mode, but today most equipment has WDS technology.

Let's move on to setting up the settings. In the first and main router, we do not change anything, all parameters remain the same. You only need to check the channel number in the Wireless section (Chanel line) - you will set the same value on the second model, otherwise they will not start working together.

Now our task is to set the second device to the signal relay mode. We will consider the sequence of actions in the same order as on most TP-Link brand models, since they are the most common among users.

Make sure that the second router supports WDS technology - this can be checked in the documents or on the manufacturer's website. Then connect it to the computer and go through the browser to the settings.

Here we make the following changes:

  • In the WPS section, turn off the active status, reboot the router.
  • It is recommended to go to the DHCP section and disable the server of the same name, since the function of the relay is to receive network data, and not distribute it.
  • Select the Network section and change the last number in the IP address (you can increase it by one) so that it does not match the combination specified in the working data of the main router. After the reboot, enter a new set of numbers to enter the parameters.
  • Open Wireless:
  1. Change Network Name - come up with a name for the access pointso that you know which device you are connecting to.
  2. Go to Chanel and choose the same number as in basic settings Internet.
  3. Check the box next to Enable WDS Bridging - this will enable the mode of operation as a repeater.
  4. Now that the work in the new mode has begun, new settings will appear, so click on Survey to search for the network to which we will connect.
  5. From the search results, select the main access point, click Connect. In the window that appears, it remains only to set the encryption type (Key Type) and enter a password to access the Internet.

Here you have completed all the necessary steps to configure wireless communication between two routers on the same network. If you want to make sure that you did it right, then on home page the WDS Status line will read Run.

As you can see, there are several ways to combine two routers, and you can choose the most convenient option for your home. After installing a second access point, you will significantly increase the Wi-Fi coverage area without losing the speed and quality of the connection - these indicators will be at their best no matter where you use the Internet in which part of the room.

Greetings, our dear readers. AT modern world almost everyone is faced with Wi-Fi routers. The Internet is firmly established in our lives. Sometimes you have to connect and configure it yourself, let's find out how to set up a Wi-Fi router yourself.

First of all, we need this:

  • the presence of a wired connection to the Internet;
  • PC or laptop;
  • wireless router;
  • connection cable to the network board.

Wi-Fi router setup.

How to set up the Internet through a Wi-Fi router for home? Initially, you need to connect the equipment. For all routers, it is the same, for clarity, everything is clear in the photo.

And sometimes manufacturers just draw a diagram on the modem itself. Very convenient and understandable.

Here's what we need to do:

  • To do this, insert the power supply cord into the router.
  • Next, the provider's cable should be inserted until a characteristic click into one of the ports on the device, which differs in a different color from the rest.
  • We connect our laptop or desktop computer to any of the remaining LAN ports.

Connection via web interface.

Now almost all network routers are managed using a web interface. Therefore, it is worth considering the question of how to set up a Wi-Fi router at home through a computer browser. To use the program, you must first enter it.

To this end, we do the following:

Setting the basic parameters.

In the Wan / Basic settings / Main settings (or something similar) tab, you need to set the following parameters:

  • connection type
  • username and password
  • IP parameters
  • connection mode

At present, in most cases, the type PPPoE connections, for clarification, you can find out from the contract with the provider or in the support service.

Sometimes there is no such parameter, more often the required type of connection is automatically connected there, if not found, we skip it.

The username and password are entered from the documents provided at the conclusion of the contract.

We leave the IP parameters as Disable, or Dinamic IP, depending on the conditions that the operator provides you.

Set the connection mode to Auto so that devices can connect to it automatically and at any time. And don't forget to save your settings! =)

After that, we proceed to setting up a WiFi connection.

Open the tab Wireless networks / WiFI or something similar. In the tab of the main settings of the wireless network, we need to specify:

  • Connection type
  • Network mode
  • Wireless network name SSID
  • Channel

We set the connection type based on the data in the contract, most often as an "Access Point". Sometimes this option is simply not there.

The network mode is set to b/g/n or g/n mixed. The bottom line is that, depending on the network mode, devices with different WiFi standards will be able to work in it. So if you have old phone or a laptop, then it will not be able to connect to the Wi-Fi of the modern standard. If you have a modern device, then it is able to work in most standards.

We set the name of the wireless network as desired - this is the name of your wifi for connection, for example, "My_WiFi".

The channel can be left auto.

However, if devices will not connect in this mode, then you should change it manually to 7 or any other selection method. This is due to the fact that in our time there may be several routers nearby, for example, in a multi-storey building and they can work in the same range, which causes difficulties.

And at the final stage of setting up Wi-Fi on the router, we go to the security settings. Here you need to do the following:

After that, we try to connect to WiFi from a phone or tablet and check the performance. Next, you need to correctly change the network card settings in order to connect the laptop to the network.

Setting up the network card

To fully answer the question, they say, how to set up a Wi-Fi router, we still need to correctly configure the network card. You can perform manipulations in the "Network Connections" menu.

  • The easiest way to get into it is through the entrance to the parameters network adapter through command line, using the key combination Win + R, after executing the ncpa.cpl command.

  • Or just go to the network settings;

  • Next, open the properties of the connection that interests us;

  • After that, you need to go to the "Internet Protocol version 4 (TCP / IPv4)";

  • Where it is worth putting a checkmark in front of the IP and DNS items, allowing them to be automatically received in this way.

  • After that, we connect to the configured WiFi network of our modem as usual!

So we figured out how to set up a Wi-Fi router (Wi-Fi) without a disk using the web interface. That's all for me, leave your comments or questions below, subscribe to our group, bye bye everyone.

There are times when you need to connect a second router in series to one already installed and working router. For example, to connect neighbors, or expand the coverage area of a wireless WiFi networks. For an inexperienced user, this simple task can be confusing. And in fact, everything is done very simply. There are two options for connecting a second router through an existing router:
- wired
- wireless
Let's consider both methods in detail.

Connect the router to the router with a cable

The wired version, that is, connecting a second router via a network cable, is suitable for any model and is especially convenient at long distances - 50-120 meters. Its meaning is that you include a second router in the LAN port of an existing one, that is, expand its network.
There are two connection schemes:

LAN-WAN

That is, we connect the WAN port (on some it is signed as Internet) of the second router with the free LAN port of the first. In this case, on the second device, you must configure the connection type Dynamic IP (Dynamic IP).

It will have its own locale, from which the network of the first router will be perfectly visible. But from there, the grid of the second router will not be visible.

LAN-LAN

We will connect the LAN port of the second router with a free LAN port of the first one with a cable. With this connection method, both routers will be on the same local network and the clients connected to them should see each other without any problems. The only caveat is that the IP addresses of the routers can match. The fact is that on most Wi-Fi routers, IP 192.168.1.1 is used by default (on some models, such as D-Link, there may be such an address: 192.168.0.1). Therefore, you need to go to the web interface of the second router and in the local settings section LAN networks change IP address:

For example, on 192.168.1.2 (it is clear that the first one will have - respectively).
It is also necessary to disable the DHCP server on the second router without fail, otherwise it will turn out that there will be 2 active DHCP servers on the same subnet, which cannot be allowed in any way!

Connecting a second router via WiFi as a repeater

Many modern wireless routers can work in repeater mode and support WDS technology. Then the second router can be connected to the first as a repeater to expand the coverage area of the WiFi network. At the same time, it is very convenient that nothing needs to be changed on the first device.
You just need to go to the settings of the second router, select the repeater mode (or enable WDS):

After that, select the WiFi of the first router and connect to it. Of course, to connect, you need to know the password for his Wi-Fi network and enter it in the settings.
OK it's all over Now. If you didn’t make a mistake anywhere, then now the second router is connected to the first one and distributes its Wi-Fi network.
