The dual main camera has long ceased to be the prerogative of top-end smartphones. Many manufacturers use such modules in medium-sized devices. price segment, and someone even in state employees. However, often additional sensor- nothing more than a desire to somehow stand out from the competition or simply marketing. Is it relevant for ZTE Blade V8 - let's try to figure it out.

First impression

ZTE Blade V8 is quite narrow, thin and handy smartphone. It lies well in the hand and practically does not slip. From the point of view of design, it does not evoke any emotions, everything is somehow simple and tasteless. This applies to both the front panel, where for some reason the resolution of the front camera is indicated (albeit barely noticeable), and the back panel with a protruding elongated photomodule. The only nice detail is the ribbed power button, which is easy to grope blindly.

The base of the case is made of aircraft-grade aluminum, but the back has not done without two traditional plastic inserts, easily distinguishable from the outside. At the bottom end there are trendy holes on both sides of the microUSB connector. As it usually happens, there is only one speaker. On top is the headphone port and microphone. SIM tray and microSD memory smartphone on the right.

On the front, the entire panel is covered with 2.5D glass. The screen has a thin black frame, above it in the left upper corner placed LED-diode for alerts. Below the display are two touch buttons backlit in the form of dots and a mechanical key with a fingerprint scanner.

I must say right away that the sensor is slow and its recognition accuracy is far from ideal. When holding the device with one hand, reaching it is problematic. In general, the button was used purely as a navigation "Home".

The smartphone is clearly not for “visuals”, who need the gadget to please with only one appearance. At the same time, it is not particularly suitable for the role of a solution for “practitioners” - the elongated shape of the case when used with one hand does not allow you to easily reach the button under the screen or to the edges of the display itself.

Screen

The display has a diagonal of 5.2 "and a resolution of 1920x1080 pixels. This is an IPS-matrix, and it is quite high-quality with excellent viewing angles and without any accents. At first, the picture is as neutral as possible, but using the settings you can adjust the saturation and hue, set it to a colder or or warm.

You can also select the type of interface scaling, font size and, if necessary, activate the blue light filter to reduce the harmful effects on eyesight. The option can be enabled automatically according to the schedule you set.

Additionally, in the display settings, you can activate display of the number of steps taken on the lock screen, which is becoming a trend among Chinese manufacturers. The error in the calculation, by the way, is small - in comparison with Xiaomi Mi Band 2, it was about + 10%.

Performance

ZTE Blade V8 is equipped with an octa-core Snapdragon processor 435 with a clock speed of 1.4 GHz and an Adreno 505 accelerator. Paired with 3 GB of RAM, it will provide enough performance for most games. The picture will not be top, but quite pleasing to the eye. The main thing is to pre-select the appropriate operating mode (“high performance”) in the power settings.

In benchmarks, the results are slightly below average for their class. Typically, analogues at a price in the same AnTuTu show about 60,000 points, but in practice, the 435th does an excellent job with all tasks, including watching FHD video, web browsing, working with documents in the clouds, and so on.

The amount of internal memory was 32 GB, but if desired, it can be expanded microSD card, while sacrificing a second SIM card. Everything is as usual with hybrid slots.

System

The smartphone runs on Android 7.0 Nougat with an ascetic shell Mi Favor 4.2. It will not please you with a lot of customization options, but it will not upset you with a bunch of unnecessary settings. Everything is quite simple, without a separate application menu, with the usual settings curtain, the position of which can be varied.

There are five fairly repetitive themes, an interactive lock screen with automatic image change, and a floating back button that you can press to return to the previous screen, and swipe to reveal additional controls: lock screen, home, menu running applications, screenshot.

Also among the unusual and generally useful features can be considered the ability to save backup desktop. This option saves and allows, if necessary, to restore all elements on the screen, returning them to their places. The function works only within one device, that is, it is a local backup, which can also be used as a toggle switch to change the operating modes of the device. Simply, for example, make two presets with the services you need for work and for home, and change them as needed.

MiFavor 4.2 has enough simple animation and generally works very well. Impressions from the interface are mostly positive, but visual settings the shell is clearly missing. Developers are very confused over simple background pictures, in which you can even change the blur level, but at the same time they did not bother to make different icons in the themes. A banal change in their color is not serious for such a large company as ZTE.

Camera

The main camera of the smartphone is dual, the main sensor is 13 megapixels, while the additional one is 2 megapixels - it is designed to create a 3D photo and get the effect of “blurring” the background.

AT normal mode the camera shoots well. In natural light, color reproduction and sharpness will please, but the camera does not always cope with abundant backlight.

The night shots of the smartphone work well. Photos are obtained with a minimum of artifacts and distortions, but a lot depends on the focus object. You will have to sacrifice either clarity or light by choosing auto mode or touch focus.

Macro has always been easy on ZTE smartphones, and the Blade V8 is no exception. It is enough just to “turn on” non-shaking hands and, like a sniper, press the shutter button while exhaling. It is easy to do this outdoors during the day, but it will be more difficult indoors.

The interface of the application for shooting is very convenient and has everything you need. There is full manual adjustments, long exposure photo, the ability to combine images and, of course, two special treatment using the second camera.

blur the background and focus on the background (Bokeh effect mode)

The first allows you to take a 3D photo for viewing through VR glasses, and the second allows you to change the focus in the frame already on the finished pictures. It “soaps” not quite accurately, so it is unlikely that anyone will use it on an ongoing basis.

The front 13-megapixel camera is also not bad. She has a fairly wide angle, but if that is not enough, there is a wide-angle selfie mode. It's not perfect and sticks together pictures with a slight curvature, but for group photos it will do just fine. It also provides retouching and an auto-photo option when a smile is detected - it works, by the way, instantly.

autonomy

The smartphone received a 2730 mAh battery. Such a reserve in the average mode of use for a full working day is not enough for the device. Constantly “eating” energy background tasks land it by the evening, by 5 o'clock. And this is not about user applications, but about some dubious processes that can be tracked in the battery consumption statistics.

For the same reason, a smartphone can lose 10-15% of its charge overnight, which is completely unacceptable. Perhaps the reason for this is an insufficiently optimized shell, which constantly accesses the device’s memory and “pulls” other resources. Of course, autonomy is the most weak point Blade V8.

VR

The box of a smartphone is analogous to Google Cardboard and similarly allows you to view VR videos. You don’t need to assemble it like origami, just combine the two parts by placing your smartphone on the bottom of one of them. The tightness of the connection of the halves of the box will determine the accuracy of focusing.

A resolution of 1920x1080 pixels at a diagonal of 5.2 "provides a pixel density of about 423 ppi, which is quite enough to minimize the "grain". The picture is quite clear, not pressing on the eyes. Its quality will be quite enough to view a 3D photo or video in 360 format degrees, for which there is also a pre-installed GoVR Player application.

Summary

The ZTE Blade V8 is a fairly common smartphone for its class, with two drawbacks: an inaccurate fingerprint scanner and modest autonomy. If this is one scale, then the other is VR content “out of the box” and high-quality cameras, front and rear. The secondary sensor of the rear module should not be considered as a clear plus, this is nothing more than a decision to please the trends.

I fully admit that someone for the sake of high-quality photos will be able to put up with both the scanner and insufficient autonomy. This is the usual compromise that could be made if alternatives were available. The Blade V8 has a competitor with exactly the same positioning, a dual PV module and an identical recommended price of 16,990 rubles. It's about. A separate material will be devoted to comparing these two smartphones and their cameras, which will not be long in coming. Follow the site for updates.

They made an unambiguously good impression - these are not very outstanding in terms of characteristics, but they are well-assembled and confidently working devices of the middle class. Metal case, Full HD-display, a normal set of features for our time and average performance. About what you expect from a smartphone for 15-16 thousand rubles. But they obviously lacked zest, and in some ways they even lagged behind modern trends.

ZTE Blade V8 just corrects their mistakes. Firstly, a fingerprint scanner appeared here - without it, in our time, it’s a shame to enter the market even basic models with a price of up to 10 thousand rubles. Secondly, an important competitive advantage- a serious selfie camera with 13 megapixels. And thirdly, that very highlight appeared - a dual camera, which does not add optical zoom to the device and does not improve shooting in the dark, but helps with software blurring of the background and 3D shooting. Only we, as she suddenly surfaced in the most unexpected place.

Otherwise, the Blade V8 is exactly what you expect from an older smartphone of this family: a metal bar with a diagonally average display and an up-to-date, but not the most powerful system-on-a-chip. But there is a surprise here too - instead of the usual Mediatek solution, the Blade V8 revealed the Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 platform. And this is definitely good news.

Design, ergonomics and software

ZTE, when developing the Blade V8, decided to rely on a strict style, even if everything is the other way around now - cheerful tones and unusual shapes, for example, with a display covering almost the entire front panel (see or). But black and gray are still the most popular colors (see iPhone 7 Jet Black in particular), and we are already used to not standing out from others when choosing a phone. However, grayness, as you know, has quite a few shades: even against the background of Blade V7 or the new Blade looks boring.

In addition to the gray-black version that I got for the test, there is a gold one (moreover, the front panel is also covered with golden color) - it looks a little ridiculous, which does not prevent it, unlike the pink-white modification, from being officially delivered to Russia. In general, at the first glance, two color versions feel the Chinese approach - the gray-black against their background looks really more advantageous for the European eye.

Several specific details attract attention: a large front camera lens with a signature (in this case, the number of megapixels is indicated, and in the Chinese version it says "Beauty Shot"), the "Home" button, which, of course, has a built-in fingerprint scanner, and a die with two cameras on the back panel, in which there was a place for a single LED flash. The die protrudes slightly above the body, while the smartphone cannot be reproached for being too thin - 7.7 mm is a completely ordinary indicator.

And above the display, and under it left quite a lot of space - from this, as well as from the noticeable side frames, you are already starting to wean. Nevertheless, you can use a smartphone with a 5.2-inch screen with one hand, ZTE has not crossed the line of acceptable dimensions in this case. At the same time, the gadget, despite the metal casing, is quite light - 142 grams. I cannot make any significant claims to its ergonomics.

All controls are in the usual places. Near the mechanical button "Home" are touch-sensitive navigation keys. They are highlighted only at the moment of touch, and which of them is responsible for which function (returning to the previous screen and calling the menu of open applications) can be adjusted in the settings.

The editors of the Treshbox were the first to get it new smartphone ZTE Blade V8. It was introduced in early January at CES 2017. The Blade V7 successor has a dual camera, runs on Android 7.0 Nougat and is relatively inexpensive. We have thoroughly tested the novelty and are ready to tell you how it behaves in everyday life.

Equipment

ZTE Blade V8 comes in a classic black and blue cardboard box with a circular pattern. The packaging is made in interesting design and hints at the VR capabilities of the smartphone. For example, two circles depicting glasses (8) are drawn on the front surface with thin lines, and the box itself is transformed into a helmet. To do this, you need to perform only 3 steps - they are simple and are shown at the bottom of the package.

In the package, we found a clip to remove the universal tray for the SIM card and MicroSD, documentation, cable charger, power supply (input 100-240V at 300 mA; output 5V at 1500 mA) and standard headphones. Everything is packed neatly and separately in small boxes. Cable length - half a meter. The sound quality of the headset is not bad, but noise appears at full volume. As for conversations, the interlocutor hears me averagely. I hear the interlocutor in the same way. I can say that in a noisy place (for example, in the subway) such a headset will not help you.

Appearance

The appearance of the ZTE Blade V8 is pleasant, but without features. The smartphone is equipped with a metal case with plastic inserts at the top and bottom for antennas. There is also a beautiful thin chamfer around the end. On the front, there is a 2.5D Gorilla Glass 3 protective glass and a Samsung-style physical button with an integrated fingerprint scanner. If you are a perfectionist, then you will not like the location of the button - it is not centered. In the hand, the smartphone lies comfortably thanks to the sloping body, it does not feel heavy.

There is an oleophobic coating, and it is good. Getting prints with clean, dry hands is difficult. In any case, they are quickly removed by wiping the screen. The golden version of the device with a white front panel came to our test - prints are practically invisible on it during daily use. It's a nice little thing.

On the front panel of the Blade V8 there are no identification marks that this is ZTE. The frames around the screen are thin, there is a black edging. Above are standard sensors, speaker and a large eye 13-megapixel front camera. At the bottom there are three main keys: a central physical one with a scanner (Home) and touch-sensitive ones with dotted illumination on the sides (Back and Open Applications). Obviously, their functionality is responsible for navigation in Android.

On the back panel there is a slightly protruding long dual camera module with LED flash, the ZTE logo and certification data.

On the left side, ZTE installed a NanoSIM/MicroSD tray. On the right side are separate volume and power buttons. The power key received a ribbed surface so that it could be felt in the dark. Also, they are all made of metal, like the body of the smartphone. During testing, I did not immediately notice that the buttons were staggering - for some, this is critical. Perhaps this is a problem specifically of our sample, but a fact is a fact.

On the top side you can find a 3.5mm headphone jack and microphone, on the bottom - a MicroUSB port and perforation for speaker and microphone.

Display

The ZTE Blade V8 has a capacitive 5.2-inch display with Full HD resolution (1920x1080 pixels). It is made according to IPS technology LCD and covered protective glass Gorilla Glass 3 with 2.5D effect. The finger glides pleasantly over the surface, and 2.5D only complements this feeling. Supports 5 simultaneous touches.

The picture quality is obviously excellent for Full HD with such a diagonal, the colors are bright and saturated. Viewing angles - maximum. But with a certain slope, some changes appear:

  • The picture loses some brightness.
  • White fades to blue.
  • Black color is inverted (the norm for IPS matrices).
  • You can see the rainbow grid of the matrix.

During normal operation, the listed flaws of the ZTE Blade V8 IPS screen are invisible. If you are not a fan of a bright and saturated picture, then several image modes are available in the settings with adjustment of saturation and hue. So lucky that it was sunny on the day of the test and we were able to identify strengths display. The maximum brightness is enough for comfortable use during the day in sunlight. In complete darkness, the minimum level is too high. However, there is a blue color filter in the settings - it reduces eye strain and reduces the intensity of the impact on vision.

Camera

The smartphone uses a dual photographic module with a resolution of 13 and 2 megapixels. The ZTE Blade V8 camera comes with an LED flash, auto focus, HDR mode and a whole bunch of settings in standard application. The maximum photo resolution is 4160x3120 pixels (4:3 format). Video quality reaches 1080p (1920x1080).

Geotagging, flicker reduction, High Dynamic Range (HDR) mode, as well as dual camera features such as bokeh and 3D are provided for taking photos. In addition to the main functions, the application has built-in Live mode (live broadcast), standard shooting modes (panorama, night mode, exposure, etc.), and several filters, including the popular fisheye. For videos, only filters are supported.

Examples of photo opportunities ZTE Blade V8 are presented in the galleries below.

Photos in different situations are very good. The picture is natural and detailed. Macro photography is quite excellent for 13 megapixels. The front camera with the same 13 megapixels also shows itself very worthy. Pictures from it are sharp and without visible defects.

We expected more from dual camera modes. As a result, we get bokeh photos with not always accurate blur dispersion (objects are blurred), and 3D simply creates two copies of the same image for viewing in VR glasses. It's really sad that there is no 3D mode support for videos - it would be really cool to create your own 3D videos.

System and software

The smartphone is running the current version operating system Android 7.0 Nougat. The interface is customized, because on top of Nougat is the proprietary MiFavor version 4.2 shell. It has built-in wallpapers and themes, there is no separate menu for applications, and the lock screen is interactive with changing images.

MiFavor 4.2 has several pre-installed services. In addition to the standard applications of the new shell, such as Mirror or File Manager, there are several folders with popular applications on the desktop. So, in "Chat & Shopping" it's Facebook, facebook messenger, AccuWeather, UC Browser and Instagram, and in "Utilities" - TouchPal Keyboard, AVG Antivirus and WeShare. Also available games: Spiderman and Real Football.

Aside from the lack of a menu and a different icon design that can be changed, overall MiFavor 4.2 is a usable interface.

Virtual reality

Virtual reality is currently actively developing thanks to a variety of manufacturers. But so far this segment is still very weak, and the technology itself is more of a toy.

If desired, the smartphone box turns into a cardboard helmet-analogue of Cardboard. The firmware for this use case has special service- GoVR Player. The application catalog contains an unexpectedly large number of videos available for viewing in 2D or 3D - 80 pieces. Also, links to third-party VR videos and VR platforms are built into GoVR Player, which is convenient.

The smartphone heats up significantly in 10-20 minutes of operation in this mode. In this case, you can't even get pleasure from the technology - its implementation leaves much to be desired.

A free helmet in the form of a box, of course, is a plus, but the only one. And yes, it’s so cool, but it’s still a weak toy for a maximum of half an hour.

Battery

Battery capacity ZTE Blade V8 is 2730 mAh. Since the case is almost all-metal, the battery is not possible to get and change at home. In our proprietary test with 50% brightness, the smartphone lasted just over 7 hours offline (7:06) - this is the average.

ZTE Blade V8

At the same time, we used a balanced performance mode and left daily features such as push notifications and GPS enabled. In power saving mode, the figure was a more impressive 9 hours and 13 minutes. As you can see, when saving energy, there are 2 additional hours of work.

The settings offer 3 power distribution schemes:

  • High performance. The device will operate in maximum performance mode (recommended for gaming and watching videos).
  • Balance. Automatic balance between performance and power consumption.
  • Energy saving. Turn off power-consuming options and reduce brightness.

Iron

The processor in the ZTE Blade V8 is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 435. This is a 28nm system-on-a-chip based on 8 ARM Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.4GHz. Graphics accelerator - Adreno 505 with a frame rate of 60 Hz. The amount of user and RAM is 32 and 3 GB, respectively.

AT everyday tasks smartphone performs well. Internet using, social networks, calls and cameras - everything is absolutely stable and works fast. When it comes to 3D gaming and VR mode, be prepared for faster drain and more heat. This is generally normal for modern devices in such tests.

In gaming tests, the smartphone proved to be not very calm. The popular Asphalt 8, Real Racing 3, Modern Combat 5 and World of Tanks heat up the ZTE Blade V8 to over 50 degrees. During testing, our sample notified us twice that it was necessary to close open applications and cool down the processor. Apparently, because of this, some other games did not start for us - an error was given by Real Racing 3 and Mortal Kombat X. But if we were still able to start the races, then MK did not want to do this in any way - the application does not respond and that's it.

If you do not pay attention to the heating of the case, then the ZTE Blade V8 copes with games - Dead Trigger 2, Asphalt 8 and even Modern Combat 5 went without hard freezes and lags in the schedule. Real Racing 3 also displayed all effects, including mirrors.

Outcome

ZTE, amid growing interest in VR, decided to highlight the Blade V8 in the middle class. As a result, the smartphone turned out to be beautiful, balanced and relatively inexpensive. But the novelty does not pull virtual reality, and you can’t write down the low resolution as a plus. However, the Blade V8 might be a good buy. Nice appearance, actual android version and a functional camera show the smartphone well from the side.

The official start of sales of ZTE Blade V8 in Russia will take place in February. The price is 16,990 rubles.

Recently, the market has great amount smartphones, difficult to distinguish from each other, however, ZTE Blade V8 has something to surprise its customers. The device, at a low cost, offers a set of characteristics that is non-standard for its class: the smartphone works on new Android 7.0, comes with a cardboard, equipped with a dual camera with 3D photo support, a fingerprint scanner and a 13-megapixel front camera. You will learn more about the smartphone, the features of its work from the review.
