Imagine the following picture: we take a laptop on a modern mobile platform and cut off the display, keyboard and battery from it in turn. The rest of the filling is placed in a compact case. As a result, we get a mini-PC, which, despite its small size, has all the capabilities of older brothers. What is the name of this computer? Kraftway Urban KU23.

The outside reflects the inside

The external data of the Urban KU23 is just wonderful: a neat black box a little larger than an external DVD drive. It is not shameful to put such a system unit in the living room. The surface of the case is glossy, you should rearrange it, holding on to the side inserts, otherwise you will not end up with stains. On the front side there are: a power button, a card reader, a USB port, a hole for loading a disk, and an eject button.

Urban is based on mobile platform Intel Centrino. Processor used Core 2 Duo T5600 operates at a frequency of 1.83 GHz, random access memory- 2 GB, which is the standard by today's standards. Completes the picture built-in graphics core Intel GMA 950, the possibilities of which are clearly not enough for modern games, but for the installed Windows Vista Home Premium enough with your head.

The volume of the built-in hard drive is 120 GB. For an impressive collection of films and music, this is not enough, in such a case, you can attach an external HDD from western digital or Seagate. Both manufacturers have black models - they will complement each other perfectly.

The latest products and sophisticated infrastructure solutions are developed and tested at the Center for Research and Expertise, which brings together unique research and expert laboratories. The intellectual potential of the company, multiplied by large investments in research and development, allows Kraftway to compete on equal terms with international giants. To ensure the highest quality of equipment under its own brand, Kraftway invested 20 million dollars in the creation of new production facilities in the city of Obninsk, Kaluga Region, where the company can already produce up to a million units of products per year.

To fulfill our obligations to customers Kraftway created a wide service network, including more than 260 service centers in all corners of the country. The round-the-clock work of the User Support Center, long warranty periods and the availability of quality service in all regions of the Russian Federation have become the corporate style of the company.

Last year we talked about the previous generation of Kraftway Credo VV23 nettops. With the update of the line, the general concept of the device has not changed: the modern VV25 model is still packed in a compact but durable metal case, which is also a radiator. The nettop is absolutely silent, although the structure of the cooling system has changed a little - now there are no heat pipes, and the processor, as the only, in fact, hot element of the system, gives off heat to a massive aluminum cylinder, which, in turn, dissipates it on the surface of one of the ribbed side covers of the case.

The nettop uses no longer Atom, but a very good fresh Intel Celeron N2930 with four cores operating at a frequency of 1.83 GHz, a two-megabyte L2 cache and integrated Intel HD Graphics. This, in general, is not just a CPU, but quite a SoC - there are memory controllers, PCI-E, USB, SATA-II. The motherboard in the Kraftway Credo VV25 is slightly smaller than the standard Mini-ITX format. However, it has two SO-DIMM slots that can accommodate up to 8 GB of DDR3L-1333 memory in total. We got just such a configuration. In addition, the manufacturer has abandoned the use of conventional hard drives, and new PCs are equipped with an SSD up to 512 GB. The test instance had a 120 GB Foxline FLSSD120X3 drive installed.

In general, the configuration turns out to be balanced, although it does not imply any significant upgrade. However, the board has two Mini PCI-E slots, into which you can insert, for example, a wireless module. By default, it is not, which is quite logical from the point of view of security, but there is a hole with a plug on the case, into which the antenna can be brought out. As before, the nettop has an optical network adapter. In our configuration, it was a 100 Mbps D-Link DEM-211 multimode module. The advantage of such a connection is better protection against hidden eavesdropping and a greater operating range compared to a conventional LAN connection. However, the device also has a built-in Realtek gigabit Ethernet adapter. The Kraftway Credo VV25 is powered by a small external PSU with a capacity of 36 watts.

The set of external interfaces has expanded significantly. As many as six USB 2.0 ports are brought out - four at the back and two at the front. The front panel also has various indicators, one USB 3.0 port and the usual ISO 7816 Class A / B / C smart card reader, due to which the built-in security system works, which we will discuss below. 3.5 mm audio jacks for connecting speakers and a microphone, a power jack and two HDMI port. The presence of at least one D-SUB or DVI video output would make the nettop even more attractive, but, alas, the manufacturer decided otherwise. On the back wall there is also a slot for installing an SFP module with its own activity indicators.

In general, the filling of Kraftway Credo VV25, in our opinion, is perfectly balanced and is perfect for office tasks, for which the nettop is designed. The body of the device is painted black. It is supposed to rest on a table, as indicated by the rubber feet on the bottom. Although, I think, with a strong desire, it can still be attached to the back of the monitor. The only thing missing is a slot for a Kensington lock. The process of assembling and disassembling the device cannot be called very simple, but in this case this is only a plus, because, for example, to initialize or reset the protection system, you still have to climb inside the case. So extra obstacles in the way of a potential attacker will not interfere. Yes, this is how harsh it is, the world of secure systems. Let's tell about it in more detail.

⇡ Security

When the computer is turned on, the first thing the user will see on the screen is not the usual POST report on the health of the device components, but a report on checking the system with Kaspersky Anti-Virus for UEFI. Yes, UEFI not only makes it easier to work with a PC before booting the OS, but also to protect the latter from third-party interference. Strictly speaking, UEFI is also not simple here - the mini-computer uses its own Kraftway Secure Shell (KSS) shell, which is equipped with various security modules, and antivirus is just one of them. Kraftway has its own modules, but third-party developers can also integrate their solutions into UEFI. Once again, it is worth emphasizing that all this works at the “lowest” level. The manufacturer claims that the only way to bypass the system is to gain physical access to the insides of the PC and flash the BIOS.

In the test instance, in addition to the antivirus that checks the boot areas, the boot loader and the OS kernel, critical system files / folders and application components, as well as the registry, there were other modules. Immediately after checking for malware, the protection module is turned on file system. It checks the hash sums of files preselected by the administrator and can work with FAT16/32, NTFS and EXT 2/3/4 file systems. Modules for monitoring logical disks on the drive and the integrity of the equipment work in a similar way. In addition, KSS has its own hypervisor built into it, and any actions are logged. If at any stage of the check a violation of the integrity of the system was detected, then its loading immediately stops. Thus, the possibilities of unauthorized access to the system are maximally limited.

The KSS shell itself also has a number of standard security settings, such as disabling booting from external drives, self-integrity checks, shell entry time limits, and so on. It also integrates with the Kraftway Security Center security server for remote PC configuration, inventory, advanced authentication settings, access control and many other functions to simplify the work with the fleet of machines without sacrificing their protection. Finally, the most important and most important part of the shell is the Krypton-Vityaz trusted boot hardware and software module (APMDZ). It is launched after system checks by antivirus and integrity modules of the file system and equipment. The tasks of the module include procedures for identification, authentication and authorization of users.

Users are identified by means of a smart card, they are authenticated using their password, and then the user is authorized in accordance with the role model. There are three levels of access. The first is the level system administrator, which configures and initializes the APMDZ. To turn it on, you need to move the switches located on the motherboard to certain position. Only after that you can initialize the protection module and create a system administrator profile that has full access and to APMDZ, and to all other system settings. The second and third access levels are, respectively, administrators and ordinary users. It is also possible for administrators to separate permissions for access to certain sections of the settings.

In any case, without a smart card and password previously registered with Krypton-Vityaz, it will not be possible to change anything BIOS settings or Kraftway Secure Shell, but just boot the OS. Naturally, all sorts of standard security measures are applied here - a limited password validity period, a limit on the number of login attempts for a specific user or all users at once, setting a minimum password length, logging, OS boot control, and so on. Separately, it is worth noting that the Kraftway Credo VV25 is one of the few such solutions that has been certified by the FSTEC and is being certified by the FSB of Russia. In addition to the above modules, other extensions are available within the KSS platform for creating secure storages, creating secure network connections, identification and authentication and so on.

⇡ Performance

In the PCMark 7 Basic benchmark, the Kraftway Credo VV25 model scored more than three times more than its predecessor VV23 - whole. In GeekBench 3, the novelty received points. For an office machine, the performance is more than enough, because now it is no longer a thin client, but a good working computer. Of course, you won’t play games, but there won’t be any problems with simple image processing, and even more so with working with documentation. About absolute noiselessness has already been said at the very beginning. It is worth adding that during operation, even with a serious load, the body of the device, or rather its top cover, which is a heatsink for the CPU, heats up slightly. In general, there is progress.

⇡ Conclusion

The Kraftway Credo VV25 is a significant step forward for Kraftway in rugged computing. First, the performance of the platform has significantly increased. Now this is not just a terminal station, but a completely modern office computer for working with important documentation. Secondly, the protection system has also undergone updates and improvements. The most interesting thing is, of course, the built-in UEFI-level antivirus and the trusted boot hardware and software module. Both allow you to reliably protect your PC from penetration. Of course, you should not forget about OS-level security tools, and about the distribution of rights when working with documents, and about other security measures. Third, Kraftway Credo VV25 inherited from past generations key strengths— compactness, noiselessness and durability. In general, the creators turned out to be a completely modern and reliable secure platform. Naturally, not the cheapest, in the opinion of a simple layman, but there’s nowhere to go - you always have to pay for the safety of critical data. The recommended price for the PC configuration we tested is 23,000 rubles. The cost of a finished PC depends on both the components and the selected security modules.
