Owners of the S7 smartphone from the South Korean giant should not rush to save money for a new generation device. Although, undoubtedly, with an almost frameless display, it makes an incredible impression. But is it worth buying a smartphone for more than 50 thousand rubles solely because of the display? Or maybe it's not just the screen, but there are some other serious differences between the Galaxy S8 and S7? Now let's try to figure it out.

Differences in ergonomics or which is more convenient - Galaxy S7 or S8?

The appearance of the smartphone has not changed very much (and to be honest, in modern realities it is very difficult to create any very unique design), but at the same time, Samsung tried to surprise us with a few things in the new flagship S8, and we must admit, in to some extent it worked out.

Exclusive display - the way to win?

Comparing appearance two "competitors", of course, a person makes a choice in favor of S8. Since we have not seen such a display from Samsung flagships before. It catches the eye and looks really like something unique.

The screen diagonal has increased from 5.1 inches (in the Galaxy S7), to 5.8 inches (in the S8) and 6.2 inches (in the S8 Plus).

By the way, remembering the S8 Plus, it is worth noting that we have already compared two top-end devices presented by Samsung's mobile division in 2017 -.

In order to make the display not only look great, but also allow you to work comfortably with it, Samsung made it rounded at the edges, further reducing the width of the frame both at the top and bottom.

In short, let's make the following conclusion - the display is really a strong feature of the Galaxy S8. Galaxy S7 against its background does not look so presentable and solid.

Transferring the fingerprint sensor is a bold decision

Unlike the Galaxy S7, where the fingerprint scanner was built into the Home button and was located under the screen of the phone, in the Galaxy S8, the South Korean company went to the experiment and placed the fingerprint sensor on the back of the smartphone. Yes, such an operation was performed in order to increase the display of the flagship, while not greatly increasing its physical dimensions.

But how convenient has it become? Big question. Still, most users are accustomed to the "classic" location of the scanner on the front panel. Yes, and by missing a finger on the scanner, we can splatter the device's camera - also no good.

From the previous two paragraphs, we can conclude ...

Galaxy S7 is a leader in terms of convenience

If the appearance of the device is beautiful, it does not mean at all that it will be comfortable to work with it. Still, the wide frame of the predecessor S7 was much more convenient. Since the smartphone could be safely held in the hand, being sure that our hand would not accidentally touch the display and would not perform any actions.

In addition, we will repeat about the fingerprint scanner. In the S7 it really does have its place. Even if the smartphone is on the surface, we can unlock it. The S8 has a scanner on the back of the panel, which means you have to hold it in your hand to unlock it. But, in fairness, it is worth noting that the new product has an iris scanner - it can partially compensate for the inconvenience when unlocking the device.

Performance and Specifications

It is clear that the Galaxy S8, in comparison with its predecessor, has become “faster, higher, stronger” - if it were otherwise, no one would understand Samsung. But is it much? Let's compare specifications these models.

Battery and run time

The battery remained completely unchanged - both here and there its capacity is 3000 mAh. Of course, we can assume that the Galaxy S8 will last longer than the S7, due to a more energy efficient processor. But at the same time, in our opinion, the increased diagonal of the display will "eat" this advantage.

Ports and Connectors

The Galaxy S8 has the only change from the Samsung S7 - the microUSB port for charging and syncing has been replaced with a more high-tech one. USB Type-C. And of course, it's good that the 3.5 mm headphone jack has not disappeared.

Map support microSD memory also available - you can always add "extra" 256 GB.

Camera

The S8 has improved the camera, but the improvements are more likely to occur at the software level. . Why hasn't there been a technical change to the 12-megapixel camera? Unclear. Samsung somehow frivolously approached the improvement of the camera. While Apple installs dual cameras, tries to surpass all its developments, Samsung just makes small improvements. We do not observe special differences and innovations from the Galaxy S7.

Performance

A faster processor was installed - despite the fact that "megahertz and cores" increased slightly, the main difference is in the technical process.

  • Galaxy S7 - 8-core, 64-bit, made by 14 nm process.
  • Galaxy S8 - 8-core, 64-bit, made by 10 nm process.

It would seem that the difference is small, but sometimes it is the process technology (the size of transistors on a processor chip) that gives a greater performance boost than an insane increase in the number of cores.

Samsung S8 also allows you to work with the latest mobile communication– gigabit LTE (cat. 16 versus cat. 9 in Galaxy S7).

Memory - operational and permanent

In this case, practically nothing has changed - both smartphones have 4 gigabytes of RAM (although there will be a version of the Galaxy S8 for the Chinese market with 6 gigabytes).

Internal storage capacity: The Galaxy S8 is the only variant with 64 gigabytes of storage. The 32 GB version, as it was in S7, is no longer available.

What has been added or Galaxy S8 chips?

In fact, when compared with the Galaxy S7, then, in addition to the above, there are not so many changes in the Galaxy S8:

  • The device initially operates under Android control 7.0.
  • Added identification by retina.
  • Bixby Voice Assistant - .
  • The new docking station Samsung Dex and its full support(by connecting it to a monitor, you can turn your phone into a full-fledged computer).
  • The main "trick" - the Samsung inscription was transferred from the front side to the back cover. It would seem - laughter and nothing more, but this annoyed many users.
  • Price. At the "start" of sales, it became much higher.

Outcome or what to choose?

If you use S7, and the huge screen does not attract you, we do not recommend buying a new product - you will not see anything in it that could cost fifty thousand rubles. Of course, there was an upgrade that made the S8 somewhat better than its predecessor. The main “horse” of the novelty is the display, but not everyone is ready to give a lot of money for it.

If you are still thinking about whether to buy S8 or S7, here are a couple of tips:

  • For those wishing to save money, we recommend taking the predecessor, since its price will drop after the release of the new product to at least 30 thousand rubles. While S8 in the first months after the start of sales will cost at least 55 thousand rubles. In terms of "price - quality" S7 is the undisputed leader.
  • For those who want everything at once, you can safely take the Galaxy S8. It is this smartphone this moment- the most advanced both in aesthetic and technological terms.

P.S. What is your opinion? Galaxy S8 much better than its predecessor? Write in the comments!

Samsung has released its flagship smartphone 2017 called Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus. As you may have noticed, there is no Edge model this year, which is logical, because the new devices have a completely bezel-less design. The South Korean manufacturer has done a great job on new smartphones, keeping the main details of the Galaxy S series, while adding innovative features such as a borderless screen and Bixby smart assistant.

However, we decided to compare the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and S8 to find out if you really need to buy a new smartphone if you already have the previous generation. Let's look at the main differences and features of smartphones.

Comparison of Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and S8: Design

The "Edge" model is gone because both Galaxy versions S8 have a screen with curved edges. However, the Galaxy S8 Plus can be considered a direct successor to the Galaxy S7 Edge.

In terms of looks, the Galaxy S8 Plus is an evolutionary upgrade. This is Samsung's big step towards the bezel-less smartphones we've all dreamed of. The bezels around the Galaxy S8 Plus display are significantly smaller than the Galaxy S7 Edge. Thin bezels are not just a joy to the eyes, but also the ability to use a larger screen. The Galaxy S8 Plus has a 6.2-inch display, while the Galaxy S7 Edge only boasts 5.5 inches.

Of course, the bezel-less design draws the main attention, but the Galaxy S8 Plus should also appeal to those users who appreciate minimalism. There is now no Samsung logo on the front, and since the bottom bezel has been shrunk, the home button and capacitive keys below the screen have been replaced with on-screen soft keys.

The fingerprint scanner, which is located in the Galaxy S7 Edge's home button, is now on the back. Whether it's convenient or not is up to users to decide, but Samsung had no other choice.

Luckily, you may not need a fingerprint scanner since the Galaxy S8 has new technology retinal scanning and face recognition. They should help increase the strength of user authentication.

Overall, the design of the Galaxy S8 Plus hasn't changed much compared to the Galaxy S7 Edge. This is the same metal case with glass panels front and back. However, the Galaxy S8 Plus has a more rounded and curved design. You won't be able to imagine how comfortable the Galaxy S8 is to hold in your hand until you try it yourself.

Comparison of Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and S8: Display

We are moving on to the main change of the Galaxy S8 compared to the Galaxy S7 Edge - the screen. While the Galaxy S7 Edge and S8 use AMOLED technology, which is to be expected, Samsung uses an 18.5:9 aspect ratio in the new smartphone, making the screen look narrower and taller than the Galaxy S7 Edge.

The tall format also means there are more pixels on the long side of the display despite the same QuadHD resolution. To be precise, QuadHD+.

Comparison of Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and S8: Camera

In terms of cameras, the Galaxy S8 Plus is very similar to the S7 Edge. The sensor has the same 12-megapixel af/1.7 aperture and the same insanely fast Dual Pixel autofocus that we loved on the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. However, Samsung claims that the new smartphones have received improvements in the camera software.

The Samsung S8 Plus captures three images at once each time you press the shutter button, with two frames being used to enhance the quality of the third and final frame. Another advantage of the S8 Plus is the front camera autofocus, which is equipped with an 8-megapixel sensor.

Comparison of Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and S8: Connections

The Galaxy S8 Plus received a new USB Type-C port, replacing the microUSB used in the Galaxy S7 Edge. The rest of the connections are intact, including IP68 dust and water resistance, multi-standard wireless charging, expandable storage and a headphone jack. Thankfully, the rumors that claimed Samsung would follow Apple's lead and remove the 3.5mm headphone jack turned out to be false.

Comparison of Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and S8: Battery

Despite the fact that the new smartphone has become larger, the battery has decreased, albeit slightly. Buying the Galaxy S8 will get you a 3500 mAh battery instead of the 3600 mAh you bought last year's Galaxy S7 Edge. We doubt that 100 mAh will play great importance for time battery life, especially if Samsung has optimized the software and hardware.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge vs S8 Comparison: Software

Galaxy S8 Plus runs on latest version Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box. New smartphone has a significantly improved user interface, which is much cleaner and more pleasing to the eye than the old TouchWiz firmware on the Galaxy S7 Edge.

Following the main trend in the mobile industry, the Galaxy S8 received its own Bixby assistant. The phone also comes with Google Assistant so you can choose which one is more convenient for you.

Comparison of Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and S8: Specs

In terms of specs, the Galaxy S7 Edge is equipped with Snapdragon processor 820 and 4 GB random access memory, while the S8 Plus is powered by the latest flagship Snapdradon 835 processor in the United States and Exynos 8895 in the rest of the world. It also has 4 GB of RAM.

Conclusion

It's time to wrap up our Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge vs S8 comparison. Even though the Galaxy S8 Plus is truly an evolutionary upgrade and the changes are visible even to the naked eye, we are still left with the question - should you upgrade your Galaxy S7 Edge to S8?

It depends on how important these changes are for you, namely frameless design, compact size, Bixby assistant.

What's more, if you like the classic physical home button and the fingerprint scanner underneath, then the Galaxy S7 Edge remains a great option for you.

Comparison includes: Samsung Galaxy S7 (bottom left), Samsung Galaxy Note 5 (top left), Huawei Nova(top right; selfie only), Samsung Galaxy S6 (bottom right), Samsung Galaxy S8 (center).

Good day. I have been writing about smartphones for a long time, and the main thing for me is their photo capabilities. It became interesting to me how the cameras of one of the market leaders are developing. After I got the Galaxy S8 in my hands, I decided to compare the pictures in the same conditions on the flagships over the past three years. And let me tell you, there is something to see.

I will make a small digression about the mobile photo opportunity. A camera in a smartphone for me (and a digital camera in general) is not just a hole in the case, but an attempt by a person to recreate the eye, one of the most complex organs of perception in the world. The camera in a smartphone is the mutual and simultaneous operation of the matrix, optics, processor, memory, ISP-chip, focusing elements, stabilization, etc. within a matter of milliseconds. And, of course, the operation of the software.

If in hardware terms the development of the camera in a smartphone is limited due to its compactness, then things are much better on the software front. A lot of developers are constantly working on perfecting photo processing in a smartphone and you got a good result.

An interesting fact is that with relatively the same hardware, different smartphones can shoot with completely different quality. This is the merit of the software part, which Samsung has at a high level.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 became one of the best camera phones in smartphone history in 2016 and remains so to this day. Whether the next flagship Galaxy S8 will be able to surpass its predecessor, and how the pictures from the previous top-end devices of the Korean company look against their background, we will find out in this material.

In each story I will award points (from 1 to 4) and in the end I will identify the winner. There you will also find a link to the original photos at the end of this article.

Samsung Galaxy S7

Overall plan

In the photo below, the sun is opposite, but not in the frame. Such conditions are not ideal for a smartphone, but not critical either.

Samsung Galaxy S6 and Note 5, the flagships of 2015, coped with the task worst of all and at about the same level. Color rendition is lame due to the sun opposite, and the colors are muted. Note 5 completely displayed the beam, illuminating a section of the image. I assume that this problem is due to optics.

The Galaxy S7 and S8, 2016 and 2017 release, are doing much better. The colors are saturated, the dynamic range is wide, which is clearly indicated by the blue sky, which is completely overexposed in previous opponents.

Let's take a closer look at this photo.

Smartphones Galaxy S6 and Note 5 show sharper pictures, and this is not surprising. After all, they have a 16 megapixel matrix, unlike 12 megapixels in the Galaxy S8 and S7. But as the general plan showed, this does not give them an advantage.

The fact is that the number of pixels plays an indirect role in the overall quality of the photo. As a photo, the dimensions of these pixels, the size of the matrix itself and the aperture play a larger role. Aperture or aperture is the opening of the camera itself, through which light enters the matrix. The wider it is, the more light falls on the matrix, as a result of which a larger light range can be covered by the camera, in more difficult conditions for shooting a good picture will be taken (light differences or poor lighting). Accordingly, the larger the pixel, the more correct color it can absorb in a shorter period.

Samsung Galaxy S8

The other side of the coin is that the larger the pixel, the fewer pixels will fit on the matrix, since its size is limited in smartphones. As a result, the image will be less detailed when enlarged.

It's time to compare the characteristics of the cameras of the reviewed smartphones:

Well, let's sum up the results of the first production. If you need a smartphone that will take pictures of objects from afar, and the image clarity is best at high magnification, then the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Note 5 are your choice. But such a scenario is useful to few people, right?

If you want to see the best overall picture with color reproduction and contrast, then the S7 and S8 will not let you down in this regard.

The points were distributed as follows (I remind you, the more the better):

  1. Samsung Galaxy S8 - 4 Korean carrots;
  2. Samsung Galaxy S7 - 3 Korean carrots;
  3. Samsung Galaxy S6 - 2 Korean carrots;
  4. Samsung Galaxy Note 5 - 1 Korean carrot.

Product shooting (macro)

Here the result surprised me, and more saturated with details and correct color rendering showed the 2015 flagship phablet Note 5. We covered the details in the last section, but it outperformed both the S6 with the same pixel count and the newer and more advanced Galaxy S7 with the S8.

Maybe this is a matter of chance, but we have what we have. Galaxy S6 completely fell into the darkness, failing to rebuild the exposure, it even has much lower detail than the rest. The Galaxy S7 is overexposed, and noise is a little visible in the shadow from the leaf. The details are slightly better than the S6.

The novelty of 2017 (S8) showed good detail and color reproduction, but still lost a step to Note 7.

Why did it happen? I confess that this is a difficult question for me. But I believe that it was the software that played a big role here - the software that is responsible for processing the image.

If you need a camera phone for macro and subject shooting in good light (!), then Note 5 should not let you down. Of course, we can say that the processor of the S8 is new, and there has not yet been an update that will make the camera better. But you see, this is far from a fact, and it is not known how much more time will pass for this to happen, and whether it will happen at all.

Samsung Galaxy S6

Back to carrots:

  1. Galaxy Note 5 - 4;
  2. Galaxy S8 - 3;
  3. Galaxy S7 - 2;
  4. Galaxy S6 - 1.

And now we got directly to the camera software.

Shooting in HDR mode

I will not explain for a long time how it works and what HDR mode is in a smartphone. I will say that this mode directly reflects the quality of the software with semiconductors responsible for shooting.

Shooting with the sun in the frame difficult conditions for any camera. Let's see how smartphone software can cope with this task.

I'm more and more inclined to believe that buying a Galaxy S8 just for the camera is not worth it. If the update will correct the situation for the better, then I do not think that by much. The Galaxy S7 is my favorite.

The points were distributed as follows:

  1. S7 - 4;
  2. S6 - 3;
  3. Note 5 - 2;
  4. S8-1.

Samsung Galaxy Note 5

Landscape

The following shooting conditions can be called the most ideal, only clouds are missing. But the weather was like this. With landscapes in good light, any device, even a budget level, will do well. But when compared, someone may have a lame color rendition or detail.

The Samsung S6 is the winner here. Not only because the clarity is better, but the orientation of the original photo itself is more suitable for landscapes. If 12 megapixels in the seven and eight get an aspect ratio of 3 to 2, then the predecessors with their 16 megapixels have almost 2 to 1.

But not only that I liked it more. The Samsung Galaxy S6 has close to natural colors of the sky and grass. The "seven" and "eight" are also doing well with colors, but the oversharp is most noticeable (an excess of contrast achieved programmatically), but the last flagship has less.

The Note 5 did a poor job of color reproduction, with the least visible gradient in the sky from clear at the top to gassed at the bottom. And the grass seems withered, which was not really. That's why I give him the lowest score.

So, a bunch of oriental delicacy was distributed like this:

  1. Galaxy S6 - 4;
  2. Galaxy S8 - 3;
  3. Galaxy S7 - 2;
  4. Note 5 - 1.

Shooting in low light

Best of all, the quality of shooting smartphones can be determined in low light in automatic mode. This type of shooting is actually the most requested, since most of us take pictures in the evening. At night, if the camera is good, the pictures are more interesting and mysterious. Some objects are emphasized with shadows, while others are highlighted with light. What about sunsets or sunrises?

But for such shooting you need a good light-sensitive camera in your smartphone. This is exactly what the modules in the Galaxy S7 and S8 are on paper. They have a wide aperture, and large pixels, but in practice, the latter did not work out smoothly.

In poor light, the number of pixels this time did not save the flagships of 2015. Here, the amount of noise, and sharpness, and the color reproduction of the Note 5 is completely useless. Galaxy S6 showed the worst detail.

The S8 smartphone is not far from them. There is a bit of everything here, but the redness is not all over the image, but more from the right edge, gradually aligning to the left. The picture blushed a little with shame. But S7 pleased. Everything as befits a flagship.

I consider this scenario the most important and indicative in this material, so I do x2 with points:

  1. Galaxy S7 - 8;
  2. Galaxy S8 - 6;
  3. Galaxy S6 - 4;
  4. Note 5 - 2.

Selfie camera

Selfie shooting is very popular in the east, and in their markets, manufacturers (Oppo, Vivo, Huawei and others) pay a lot of attention to the front camera. In our smartphones, in most cases, it is good. Just this year, Samsung started focusing on narcissistic natures, and introduced 16 MP cameras into its A series (2017) at the beginning of the year. There was little sense from this, since the pixels there are small, the aperture ratio is small.

The Galaxy S7 also has noise, but much less. Samsung Galaxy S8 is the best of the four, and the result is in the face, in the literal sense. The skin even shows details that are not in other pictures. Color rendering is top notch.

So, smartphones were distributed in the following hierarchy:

  1. Galaxy S8 - 4;
  2. Galaxy S7 - 3;
  3. Galaxy S6 - 2;
  4. Note 5 - 1.

You may have noticed that the article preview contains Huawei smartphone Nova, and he's not there for symmetry. I already did comparative test this smartphone before, and compared it with its closest competitors in price category(about $400). It proved to be not bad, and the manufacturer features this line as a smartphone with a good selfie camera.

That is why I decided to compare the Nova selfie camera with the flagships, but on closer examination I see only software processing. The image turned out as painted with paints, without small details. Beautiful, nothing to say, but not for real. Huawei Nova gets 1 point for a good attempt.

Determination of the winner

We got to the most interesting. I confess, I myself do not know the result yet, and it is wildly interesting. We believe:

  1. Galaxy S7 - 22 points;
  2. Galaxy S8 - 21 points;
  3. Galaxy S6 - 16 points;
  4. Note 5 - 11 points.

YES! This is exactly the result I wanted to see. The Galaxy S8 not only shoots the same as the S7, but is worse in some scenarios.

I do not want to talk about the fact that the software is not yet optimized, and perhaps in the future the camera in the S8 will shoot better. If a company launches a smartphone on the market, then it should be regarded as a finished product, and no concessions should be given to any updates. Yes, and not the fact that they will appear.

My total

As I said at the beginning of the article, the camera in a smartphone is the most important thing for me. Now is the moment when I'm eyeing a new smartphone, and my favorites at the moment are the Google Pixel, Galaxy S7 and the new HTC U11, which scored the highest score in the test of the authoritative DxOMark laboratory. HTC has not yet gone on sale, but I have no reason not to believe the experts.

Why not iPhone 7 Plus? I have already done a comparison of Google Pixel and iPhone 7 Plus, and the latter lost this battle. Although it is difficult to call his camera bad.

Regarding the Galaxy S8, it cannot be said that it is a failed product. The smartphone is actually good, but this is a story for a separate article written by Alexander Navagin in his article.

These original photographs were used for comparison.

Looking for a camera phone? Ask your questions in the comments!

Samsung Galaxy S7 was recognized as one of the best camera phones last year, and with the release of Galaxy S8, last year's model has become even more attractive, because the price tag has dropped. At the same time, a pertinent question arises: what is more profitable to buy, has the quality of shooting in the new product grown so much to pay extra money for it? Let's arrange a small "battle" between the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S7, and on live pictures taken in the same conditions, we'll see who wins.

Comparison of camera characteristics

Before proceeding to practice, let's analyze the characteristics of the cameras of the two leading South Korean devices. So to say, find one difference.

With the majority general characteristics, different models matrices affect the quality of the S7 and S8 images. But this is not the only difference: do not forget about the redesigned software component. Even with completely the same filling, smartphones with different software will shoot with different quality, fortunately, Samsung is at its best in this area.

Long shot

At first, the devices were tested in not the most favorable shooting conditions for a smartphone - backlight, when the sun is opposite the camera and, accordingly, behind the objects. Executed both times manual focus in the center - on a tree. On both the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S8, the photos came out with rich colors, the wide dynamic range is indicated by the blue sky, which could turn out white on weaker cameras. But still, with the naked eye, the advantage of the current flagship, which produced a more saturated and contrasting frame, is noticeable.

A closer look at the photos on both smartphones shows that the approximation is not their forte. Drops and small features are blurred, detail is lost. But everything is understandable: color and detail are inversely proportional, and Samsung decided that there should be excellent color reproduction.
The fact is that the quality of a photograph largely depends on the size of the matrix, the size of the pixels and the size of the aperture.

The wider the aperture is opened, the more light enters the sensor, and the better pictures are obtained in conditions of imperfect lighting. And with this, everything is OK: the highest aperture of smartphones used in cameras. And the larger the pixel, the more information about the color it will receive in a short time, and the more accurately it will transmit.

But, on the other hand, the matrix is not rubber: the larger the pixel, the less these elements fit on it. As a result, the picture is less detailed in the approximation.

We will give 2 points to a smartphone that surpasses its competitor in photo quality, 1 point to an outsider with slightly worse quality, and 0 points to a significantly inferior one.

macro photography

In the close-up shot, we again see a slight overexposure of the Galaxy S7, there is a little noise on the leaf and in its shadow. The 2017 flagship once again outperformed last year's model with better details and colors.

But, we have to admit that although the Galaxy S8 proved to be better than the Galaxy S7, in macro it is inferior to early models! But the issue is most likely software, which is responsible for processing the image, and, perhaps, the current king camera will receive an update that will bring it to the undisputed macro leaders.

Total: 1:2 in favor of the Samsung Galaxy S8.

Shooting in HDR mode

The quality of the software can be judged by HDR - a mode in which the program combines several pictures taken with different exposures. All objects in the frame should turn out clearer, more saturated colors, without light or, conversely, going dark.

To test how strong it is Samsung flagships, again complicated the task and shot frames with a tree in the backlight.
The Samsung Galaxy S7 produced an excellent photo: HDR removed overexposure from a distant tree and sky, they became more saturated, respectively, in green and blue colors. And also developed a nearby tree, which turned out to be underexposed in auto mode.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 was blown away in HDR: both with and without High Dynamic Range, the frames are overexposed, color reproduction and detail improved slightly compared to its predecessor.

Total: 2:0 in favor of the Samsung Galaxy S7.

landscape shooting

You have to try hard not to shoot a high-quality landscape with a clear sky and bright sun: even budget devices with mediocre cameras can do this task. But there may be flaws in the transfer of color or detail.

As expected, both smartphones coped with color with a bang, as expected, there are also problems with detailing: noise is visible in the approximation due to excessive sharpness. But in the photo of the Galaxy S8, there is a little less oversharpening.

Total: 1:2 in favor of the Samsung Galaxy S8.

Shooting in low light conditions

Nothing so clearly shows the quality of photography as auto mode and poor lighting conditions. In fact, this is the most sought-after combination: not everyone knows how to tweak manual settings or select a mode and not always want to, we relax and take pictures mainly in the evenings. In subdued light or total darkness, photos turn out more mysterious, light and shadow outline objects in a special way, and what colors sunsets play with!

But to capture all this beauty in a photo, you need a camera with good light sensitivity, and the Galaxy S7 and S8 are theoretically suitable: they have the widest aperture on the smartphone market, as well as larger pixels. But only one of them passed the exam.

Galaxy S7 coped with the task: in the approximation you can see even text, the right color. Galaxy S8 let us down: the frame went pink, the text is more blurry.

Total: 2:1 in favor of the Samsung Galaxy S7.

Results

If you sum up the points, the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S7 scored an equal number, namely 6 each. Roughly speaking, the current flagship shoots in quality comparable to the previous one, each of the Galaxy S is better in some ways and worse than the opponent in some ways.

As you can see, the Samsung Galaxy S8 was better at shooting long and close shots, as well as the landscape in good light. But in terms of HDR and shooting in low light conditions, the Samsung Galaxy S7 wins.

Choose your favorite based on your priority shooting scenarios, but subjectively, the Samsung Galaxy S7 seems like a better investment.

For months of endless leaks and rumors about the next Samsung smartphone, it seems that we know everything. After the Galaxy Note 7 debacle, the company has a lot to prove. However, from everything we've heard so far, hot new will come very soon.

New, of course, is the Galaxy S8 and the larger Galaxy S8 Plus. flagship phone Samsung 2016 is still good. The Galaxy S7 Edge is worth buying without a doubt, although the short wait may pay off as Samsung is preparing some big changes for 2017.

In 2016, Samsung released the Galaxy S7 and big galaxy S7 Edge with curved screen. The phones have got a premium metal design, a water-resistant design, a microSD slot and one of the best cameras on a smartphone. Building on the success of the Galaxy S6, the phones have been redesigned in key areas.

This year we expect more of the same, but in a good way. The continuation of the successful design gets a lot of love from Samsung, making the latter better across the board. Confirmation of this is the updated “Infinity” display with almost no bezel, which has become even larger than on the Galaxy Note 7 without physically increasing the phone. Almost the entire front panel is covered with a screen. Add an upgrade here basic functions and the Galaxy S8 will be a great phone to buy in the first half of the year.

Galaxy S8 VS Galaxy S7: Display

There will be a lot of changes regarding this pair of phones, but nothing will change more than the display. Literally. Well, unless the fingerprint scanner moves to the back in some weird place.

Both the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus will get huge screens. The technology name is Infinity Display. At the same time, the physical size of the phones won't be much larger than the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. This is thanks to the extremely thin bezels of the screen, and the physical home button will be removed for the first time in seven years. Instead, the fingerprint reader will move to the rear panel to the right of the camera.

If what we've heard is accurate, the Galaxy S8 will have a 5.8-inch QHD display. Then the big Galaxy S8 Plus will come with a 6.2-inch screen. Both screens are larger than the panels of any Galaxy Note. Impressive, isn't it?

The new Quad-HD AMOLED panel is thinner, more efficient, offers HDR content, and better colors than any Samsung phone before. Rumor has it that the new panels will come with an 18:9 aspect ratio, so they'll be a bit taller than before, but not too wide. This is mainly done so that you can easily hold and use the phone, even if its screen is huge.

Both screens will be curved. Something that some users might not like. The Samsung Galaxy S7 was flat while the Galaxy S7 Edge had curved panels. This will most likely not happen again in 2017 as both panels will be curved. Just remember that you can disable most of the features. curved screen and enjoy the big screen and fantastic design. If you don't want a massive screen and are eyeing the Galaxy S7, just know that the S8 will be about the same size but with a better visual experience.

Galaxy S8 VS Galaxy S7: Design

The design will be very similar in one sense, but completely different in another. This is because Samsung is using a proven and all metal/glass design, with the idea that it will be like the S7 Edge and Galaxy Note 7.

Why would the phone look different? Because there are no physical buttons on the front panel, none at all, instead the entire front panel will cover the screen. The Samsung Galaxy S8 will use 90% of the screen in relation to the body.

We can still expect curved edges on the front and back, a speaker at the base of the phone, a 3.5mm headphone jack (hopefully) and a new USB port Type-C. The camera bulge will be smaller than ever before, and the sensor will be positioned on the left instead of the right. This is because Samsung has put a fingerprint scanner next to the camera. Most other Android smartphones that didn't have a front-facing fingerprint scanner had them on the back, below the camera. Time will tell how users will adapt to the new scanner location. Some users are not against such a decision, others are unhappy. We are sure that everyone will get used to enjoying the beautiful screen and improved camera.

The photo above comes from @Evleaks and it reveals everything there is to know about the design of the new Galaxy S8. The design remains familiar, but improved across the board. Oh, there's an Iris scanner located on the front. No flash front camera as some rumors have suggested.

Galaxy S8 VS Galaxy S7: Specs

An important thing for many buyers is the specification sheet. Of course, given that this is the flagship of the new year, the characteristics should be improved, but by how much, that is the question. Samsung is looking ahead and ready to make progress this year.

Also, as Samsung is rolling out Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 chips, the new flagship processors that will be able to power most phones in 2017, Samsung has also taken the entire first batch. That is why HTC U Ultra will go to the market with last year's processors. No one will be able to compete with Samsung's performance before April or May, since the manufacturer has bought all the chips. So without further ado, here is the comparison Galaxy specifications S8 and Galaxy S7. It is worth noting that the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge are still good, even against the background of smartphones in 2017, they will also be listed in early 2018.

  • 5.7- and 6.2-inch Quad-HD AMOLED curved (2560 x 1440);
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 or Samsung Exynos chipsets;
  • 64 GB of internal memory (MicroSD) and 4 GB of RAM;
  • operating room android system 7.1.1 Nougat and TouchWiz;
  • Camera 12-Dualpixel – OIS, phase detection autofocus, f/1.7 aperture;
  • Front camera 8 MP with autofocus;
  • Fingerprint and iris scanner;
  • 3200 and 3500 mAh battery with fast charging;
  • Improved Always-On Display;
  • Samsung Pay;
  • USB Type-C, 3.5mm headphone jack;
  • 5.1- and 5.5-inch Quad HD display (curved on Edge);
  • Snapdragon 820 (Exynos) processor with 4 GB of RAM;
  • Built-in memory 32 GB and MicroSD;
  • Android 6.0 Marshmallow (Nougat update);
  • 12-DualPixel camera with OIS, f/1.7 aperture and other features;
  • Front camera 5 MP;
  • Fingerprint scanner on the front panel;
  • IP68 rating for water and dust resistance;
  • 3000 and 3600 mAh batteries, fast / wireless charging;
  • Always-on display;
  • Micro-USB, 3.5-inch headphone jack, etc.

The screen is bigger, the battery is bigger (and hopefully doesn't explode), and more importantly, the storage is twice as large. The Galaxy S7 series received a microSD slot, so the built-in memory will not be a problem. The Galaxy S8 will come with 64GB of storage as well as a microSD slot. Therefore, getting 300 GB should not be difficult with a 256 GB microSD card.

Overall, it's not a huge boost over the 2016 flagship, but the noticeable memory boost promises a positive improvement for some users.

As you can see in this comparison, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge are still good. Phones have a lot to offer, they just do not have such large panels. We could expect larger batteries and fast charging with Galaxy S8. Rumors about the size of the battery walk back and forth. We'll have to wait and see.

Camera and memory

At this stage, we do not have an abundance of information on this subject, but it is known that Samsung is making changes and improvements to cameras and memory. Minimum storage has doubled from 32GB to 64GB with the Galaxy S8, though the flagship will get a microSD slot. That's a good thing, because many current Galaxy S7 owners are overwhelmed after a year of use.

Another big area to upgrade is the Galaxy S8's camera. Samsung made its biggest leap last year. Going down from 16MP to 12MP Dualpixel sensor in the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge. This is a large sensor that captured significantly more light at f/1.7 and also uses all the pixels to offer one of the most fast systems automatic focus on the market. As a result, you get one of the best cameras on smartphones, often beating the iPhone in tests.

We haven't heard much about Galaxy camera S8, except that Samsung is again looking for a variety of ways to upgrade. Buyers could expect the same 12 Dual Pixel camera, as well as a better 8MP front sensor, along with other refinements. If the camera is the priority of your purchase, the Galaxy S7 should be more than enough. However, the most modern and best camera will come with new Galaxy S8 and is especially relevant for selfie fans.

Battery life

Battery life is becoming an increasingly important aspect of any smartphone. A prime example is the 2015 Galaxy S6 with a tiny 2550 mAh battery that just couldn't last very long. However, the Galaxy S7 was equipped with a 3000 mAh battery, and the new S7 Edge offered even more - 3600 mAh. Both S7 models lasted long enough for most users.

After the Galaxy Note 7 incident, the battery will be an important area for Samsung. Is the manufacturer going to add a bigger battery to the Galaxy S8, or will it take the safe route to prevent any problems? We do not know. However, with huge screens, flagships will need serious batteries or they will be outclassed by the 2016 Galaxy S7.

As a result, we're hearing that Samsung will be using a battery in excess of 3200 mAh with the Galaxy S8 and over 3500 or 3600 mAh with the Galaxy S8 Plus. In that case, the battery should be on par with last year's model, but buyers shouldn't expect anything special with the Galaxy S8. The new flagships will charge faster, however. The S8 will use the new USB Type-C, which charges much faster. Need numbers? Charging from 0 to 80% in 35 minutes. Great, right?

Release date and priceGalaxyS8

Last, but certainly not least, the release date, price, and availability of the Galaxy S8. This will be the first time Samsung can't handle a year-long Galaxy S release and skip February. In fact, the flagship will be announced a month later than before. The phone will go on sale in a month.

In 2016, the Galaxy S7 was announced in February and went on sale on March 11. We probably won't see an official release in 2017 with the Galaxy S8 Samsung phones before the event in New York on March 29th, therefore, the Samsung Galaxy S8 will be on sale in April. The delay is blamed on stringent security measures and additional testing to prevent the Note 7 from failing. With that said, if you need a phone right now and don't need the huge Infinity screen, the Samsung Galaxy S7 is very a good choice. Otherwise, you will have to wait more than two months before purchasing the Galaxy S8.

Another thing, serious consideration deserves the price. Turn on the big screen best time battery life, a fast processor, and extra storage all make the S8 an expensive phone. The Galaxy S7 can be found for significantly less. A popular rumor purveyor recently claimed that the Galaxy S8 will retail for $849 ($55,000) when it launches in April. It is more expensive than any flagship before it. If you're going to wait, get ready to post more, something like the Galaxy S7 Edge right now.
