I often have such a case when you type some text in Word, and the program starts to freeze and does not leave. That is, except for the forced termination of the program, nothing can be done. Sometimes even the program itself crashes. On the Internet, many users are also tormented by this issue.

Today I will analyze this issue using the example of Word 2013, since, in other versions of Word 2010, the problem is solved in a similar way. By the way, we will analyze the autosave function.

How to recover an unsaved Word document?

At the software package Microsoft Office 2013, there is a so-called autosave feature, which in certain moment saves copies of the document. As soon as the program freezes and finishes its work, after restarting, all documents that were previously saved should be displayed in the left panel "Document Recovery". Double click on latest document, it should open.

By the way, it also happened that the text that was saved during autosave, after the critical end of MS Word, did not open completely, some fragments did not have time to be saved.

So, if the saved document did not start when you tried to open it, then go to "File""Intelligence""Versions""Recover Unsaved Documents". A window should open where all the saved documents will be located.

This window will contain files with an incomprehensible extension .asd, these files are Word recovery files. If the file has not yet been saved by the user, then it will have something like this: "Autorecovery save of Document1.asd".

Try opening such a document through Word. If the document is damaged, you can use the file recovery function "Open and Repair".

Usually, autosave copies are stored for only 4 days, and then deleted, therefore, it is better to save them yourself through "File" and "Save As".

As I said, autosave is performed at some point in time, the default is once every 10 minutes, but this value can be changed. To set up autosave, go to "File", "Options" and "Preservation".

It also indicates where copies of the document will be saved, you can set your path. By the way, these directories are hidden, but you can see them if you turn on the display in the explorer hidden files and folders.

That's all, now you know about automatic saving in Word and how you can recover an unsaved document. I advise you to set the frequency of autosave to be less than 10 minutes, since, in the event of a program freeze, most of the document will have time to be saved.

Do you know the situation when, after sitting all day working in Word, upon completion, you are going to close the file with a clear conscience, but the cursor treacherously clicks on the “do not save” option, and all your efforts are in vain? Or while you are writing an essay and you don’t suspect anything, the light suddenly turns off, and with it all unsaved data disappears? If you are reading this now, then something like this has most likely happened to you. But do not despair! The process of finding an unsaved document and recovering it is quite quick and easy, so you won't spend much time on it.

Let's consider ways to recover Word documents for three versions: 2010, 2007 and 2003. They are slightly different, but first things first.

Word 2010 version

Fortunately, in this version, the developers have taken care of such a problem? and you can easily return the lost document. Moreover, if there was an emergency shutdown, that is, the computer turned off without your participation, then the program itself will restore the file that you did not have time to save.

And if there were no unexpected shutdowns and you just missed by clicking on the "save" button, then you need to look for backups documents manually. It's not that hard, see below for detailed instructions.

  1. Open Word, click on "File" in the left upper corner screen. Then go to "Details"

2. We find "Versions", click and select the "Recover unsaved documents" function.

3. A folder opens in front of us, where the backup copies of documents are located. We are looking for the file we need among them and open it.

4. Save the document and keep working on it for as long as you need!

That's all, we found a backup copy of the document and restored everything manually, spending a maximum of 5 minutes on it. Perhaps you have a question, why did the unsaved file end up in some folder? It's simple, Word 2010 defaults to autosave a document every 10 minutes. If desired, this time can be changed, for example, to autosave every 2 minutes. This is pretty easy to do, let's figure it out together.

  1. Again we go to the “File”, only this time we select “Help” from the menu, and then “Options”.
  2. On the right in the options menu we find “Saves” and set the interval convenient for us at which autosave will be performed. There you can also change the path of the saved files to make it easier to find them.

That's all, now you know how to recover a Word 2010 document. Now let's understand how to recover an unsaved Word 2007 document. It's a little different there., but also quite simple and clear.

Word 2007 version

In general, the only difference between earlier versions of word (2007, 2003) is that there is no “Details” section in the menu, from where we “pulled out” unsaved documents. However, as mentioned earlier, recovering files is still not difficult for you and me.

That's all, the restoration of the document that has not been preserved has been completed! The same scheme works with the version Word 2003 .

Backup Converter

But if you are unable to open the file using the methods above, then the file is damaged or deleted, and here you already need to use a backup converter. It is installed with Office, but sometimes it needs to be activated manually.

Congratulations, you now have this option enabled. If it was already enabled before, then you don’t need to do any of the above, we proceed immediately to its use. So, how to recover a deleted word document:

  1. Run word, "File" - "Open".
  2. Enter the path to the backup and click on it.
  3. In the field above the "Cancel" button, set the "Text Restore" parameter.
  4. Click on the arrow next to "Open" and select "Restore".

Done, we "returned" the deleted / damaged file using the converter.

What to do if there is no backup

It happens that it disappears after the document in Word has been closed. But this situation is not hopeless, there are several ways to get your file back safe and sound.

First way

  1. Open "My Computer".
  2. Enter "*.asd" into the search bar. This is an extension of all unsaved word files, and the asterisk is read like any character.
  3. When you complete your search in the provided list, look for a backup of your data.

And if the system didn't find anything, try using ".wdk" instead of "*.asd". If this option does not help you, try the next method.

Second way

If the first option did not help you, then there is no automatically saved document. However, your data may still be in temporary files. So what to do:

  1. Open "My Computer" again
  2. Now we drive in the search bar "* .tmp".
  3. Look for the file you need in the list.

Third way

Sometimes temporary data is saved with a ~ sign, a tilde at the beginning.

  1. Again we go into the search, in the parameters specify the date last change in file.
  2. We type "~*.*" and the system searches for all documents that begin with a tilde.
  3. From the entire list that appears, find the document you need.

These are all the ways in which it is possible to recover lost and unsaved files. But if none of them helped you, then try using special programs.

When you work with long or important documents, you need to make sure that autosave is set up, but it's better to save yourself to be absolutely sure of the safety of your documents.

Instruction

you worked in Microsoft Word. Restart and open Microsoft Word. The program should send you a request for all unsaved data in its format. Open these files and find the most full version the document you were working on before the crash. It will be marked, in brackets, as "Recovered". Save the data to another as soon as you find what you need.

If the prompt does not appear, click on the "Tools" tab in the MS Word window, and then "Options". The "Save" tab should have a "File Locations" option, it should be the path to the location of any unsaved files that were unexpectedly closed due to a hardware failure or software. In Word 2007, you find this path through the Microsoft Office Button and Word Options. The path is marked in the "Save" tab.

If you did not check the box "Autosave every n minutes", firstly, urgently correct this omission, and secondly, try to restore the file forcibly. Call the file open panel, select your lost document and, by clicking on the arrow in the lower right corner of the "Open" button, select "Open and Restore".

If this does not help, you will have to try to find and restore the file manually. To do this, return to the Desktop, click the Start button and find the Search item. In the search, select the "Part of the filename or the entire filename" option and enter *.ASD . Set the search scope to My Computer and click Find. If the computer finds your file, which will have the name "name of the lost document.asd" return to Word. Enter the opening and in the "Type of files" list, select the value "All files (*. *)". Among the list of documents, find your file with the extension . asd and open it. Restart your computer, start Word, and if your document is displayed on the left side of the screen, save it immediately.

Maybe that won't help either. Then you should try to find the file among the temporary ones, with the extension tmp. To do this, you will have to turn to the search by again, but in the file parameters set *.TMP and chevrons next to the item “When were the last changes made?” specify dates. If the document is , return to Word. Call the panel for opening files, select your lost document and, by clicking on the arrow in the lower right corner of the "Open" button, select "Open and restore" again.

Even if in this case the document was not, there is hope - some temporary computer files, starting them with a tilde (~). In the "Search" change "Part of the file name or the entire file name" from *.TMP to ~*.*. And leaving the same dates in the change parameters, start a new search. With the found document, you should do the same as in the previous case.

You were working in some other program for creating documents.

Open Word Pad via the "Accessories" menu on the "Start" menu. Click "File" and then the "Open" button. Enter the name of the lost file. When prompted to convert the file, choose no. Select "Save" from the menu to save the recovered file using WordPad and click "OK".

I welcome you all back to my blog, dear friends and readers. Surely, you have experienced such force majeure when you did not have time to save an important Word document. After that, as a rule, I just wanted to tear my hair out of my head out of anger that everything was gone and the text important to you was not recorded. But do not rush to do this, because today I will tell you how to restore a Word document if you have not saved it and accidentally closed it. I will show the whole thing in Word 2013, but this instruction it will easily work for other versions, such as 2007 and even 2016.

Many are interested in the question of whether it is possible to recover an unsaved word document. In most cases, of course, this can be done, but in general, I would advise you to just make it a habit to save the document at least once every five minutes. Don't be lazy. It won't take much of your time, and at least you won't worry too much that some important information is missing. All you have to do is quickly click on the floppy disk icon or press CTRL+S.

Autosave

Unfortunately, the reasons why you may not have time to save important information quite a bit of:

  • An important computer freezes, shuts down or restarts;
  • Accidentally closed the file and didn't save it. Or they completely forgot to do it;
  • Program error or failure;
  • B much more.

But thank God, no fools work at Microsoft, and naturally they foresaw the possibility of some kind of failure, turning off the computer without saving the document. By default, the program autosaves every 10 minutes in automatic mode. But if you think that this is a lot, then you can change this parameter so as not to lose too much information in an accidentally closed document.

Instant Recovery

If you suddenly experienced a force majeure and for some reason the computer turned off, hung or rebooted, then the Word has a function automatic recovery just for such cases.

All you have to do is go to Word as soon as your computer boots up. In this case, the program will automatically prompt you to restore unsaved documents with all your latest changes. Just click on the file that he offers you to return and save it. Only Word is a strict editor, and if you don’t choose to restore documents this time, then the next time you start it, it won’t offer it.

Manual recovery

The undoubted advantage of Microsoft Word is that it is full of built-in tools for recovering unsaved closed documents. And this is great, because there are a lot of different situations. In general, let's get down to this method.

Return

And of course, you can’t lose sight of the fact that files can be stupidly accidentally deleted. So if some important document has been deleted, try to restore it as soon as possible. I suggest you use one of the, but first of all I advise you to use Recuva. It is very light, free and effective. I wrote about how to use it.

So what do you think? In my opinion, the guys from Microsoft took good care of the fact that users can restore an unsaved Word document if they suddenly forgot to remember it. And it's really cool that you don't even have to resort to help outsider programs Well, not counting the recovery. These methods have helped me more than once, so I think they will come in handy for you too). Although I hope that all the same you will not have any failures.

And in order not to lose all the files from such failures, I advise you to view one cool course on backup data. Thanks to him, you will no longer worry about the safety of your files, so in case of any force majeure, you can restore everything. All lessons are built perfectly and understandable for any level of user.

Personally, I hope that you will never have such incidents. And if they do, you can always fix it all and return the document with all the latest changes and edits.

Sincerely, Dmitry Kostin.

They need to be saved periodically. This way you won't lose data due to a power outage or something like that. But let's say the system hung and you had to restart it. Or you accidentally clicked "Don't Save" when you exited the program. Of course, you can reprint a couple of sentences. But suddenly dozens of pages disappear? It's a few meticulous hours of work. Therefore, it will be useful to learn how to recover an unsaved Word document.

It will be useful to learn how to recover an unsaved Word document.

After an abnormal shutdown (the computer suddenly freezes or restarts), Word itself will offer to restore the file. Autosave must be enabled for this to work.

  1. Run the program. A list of documents will appear on the left side of the window. They were open when the computer turned off. The time of their last change is also indicated there.
  2. Find the one you need. Just click on them - the text will be displayed in Word.
  3. As soon as you remove the list, copies will be placed in the trash. Before that, the program will ask you to confirm their deletion. Better to be safe - they won't show up a second time.

But if this list did not open, or you accidentally closed the program, and the Word document was not saved - how to restore it in this case? The procedure depends on the version of office.

After a crash, Word will prompt you to restore the file.

Office 2010

Microsoft Office 2010 has a special toolkit for this:

  1. Click on the blue "File" button at the top of the window. It's just to the left of the menu bar.
  2. Go to the Details section.
  3. At the bottom there is a block "Versions". It displays autosave data with the date and time it was last modified.
  4. Click on "Version Control" and select the "Restore" option.
  5. The folder containing the backups will open. Find the one whose title matches the document.
  6. This is a temporary file. It can be removed after cleaning the system or system disk from garbage. To continue working with the document, convert it to Word format. When launched, the program will issue a corresponding notification. To do this manually, go to File - Save As.

If the copy is incorrectly recorded, you will not be able to open it directly. But you can do this:

  1. Start Word.
  2. Click File - Open.
  3. Specify the path to the copy.
  4. In the list above the "Cancel" button, instead of the "Documents" option, select "All Files". Backups have an .asd or .wbk extension.
  5. Click on the desired icon. If you didn't save the document to disk, the name will consist of the first words you typed there.
  6. Next to the "Open" button, find the black arrow and click on it.
  7. Select Restore.

By default, Word stores these copies in a folder that may be hidden. To display it, do this:

  1. Start - Control Panel - Appearance and Personalization - Folder Options (or Folder Options).
  2. View tab.
  3. Check the box next to "Enable Show Hidden Folders".
  4. Click "Apply" and "OK".

AT previous versions Office doesn't have an Info section on the menu. Therefore, this method is not available. But it is quite possible to get your data back.

Office 2007

Here's how to recover unsaved word document 2007:

  1. Click on the Office logo at the top left.
  2. Click on the "Settings" button.
  3. Go to the "Save" section.
  4. The path to the folder with backups is written in the "Data directory for auto-recovery" block. Memorize or write it down.
  5. Remove the options window.
  6. Click the Office logo again and select Open.
  7. Specify the path to the copy folder. You can use them in the same way as in Word 2010 (open and restore).

This method will work with Office 2003 as well.

Backup Converter

If the autosave file is corrupted or gives an error when opening, use a backup converter. It is usually installed with Office and does not need to be enabled separately. But in which case you can activate this function manually.

  1. Open Start - Control Panel.
  2. In the "Programs" category, click on "Uninstall programs" (or "Programs and Features").
  3. Item "Microsoft Office" or "Microsoft Office Word".
  4. Click Edit.
  5. In the window that opens, select "Add Features" and continue.
  6. Go to Common Office Tools - Converters and Filters - Converters text files- Text recovery converter.
  7. Select the "Run from computer" option and click "Continue". The setup will take time.
  8. Start Word.
  9. Click the Office logo or the blue File button.
  10. Click on "Settings", go to the "Advanced" tab
  11. Find the "General" block. To do this, scroll down the menu.
  12. Check the "Confirm Format Conversion" checkbox.

Now you can use this option if it was previously disabled. It is done like this:

  1. In Word, go to File - Open (in Office 2007, click on the logo).
  2. Specify the path to the backup and click on it.
  3. In the field above the "Cancel" button, set the "Restore Text" option
  4. Click on the arrow next to "Open" and select "Restore".

How to enable autosave?

In order not to think about how to restore a Word document if you have not saved a backup, turn on autosave. Here's what to do:

  1. Category "Save".
  2. Check the box "Autosave every ..." and set the time. For example, 5 minutes. And Word will update the copy every 5 minutes.
  3. In Word 2010 there is a "Save latest version when turned off." So you can save an accidentally closed document.

Turn on autosave

Documents stored online or on removable media

A file located on a flash drive, external hard drive, on the Internet, or network folder, Office treats it as remote. It doesn't affect work in any way. You can print with ease. But if there are problems with a removable device during saving, or access to the network is temporarily lost, the data will be lost and many hours of work will go to waste. To prevent this from happening, do the following:

  1. Blue File button - Options or Office Logo - Options.
  2. Section "Additional".
  3. In the "Save" field (scroll down a little to see it), check the box for "Copy deleted files on computer".

So when working with documents, Word will create autosave data on the PC. And you will return them in the event of a removable media failure or other failure.

How to restore a document if there is no backup?

The backup may disappear after you exit the program. Even with autosave. And if this function is not used and not configured, you will not be able to return your data through the program interface at all. But it's not all that hopeless. Here's how to recover a closed Word document in a case like this.

Option 1

  1. Open "My Computer".
  2. Find the search bar at the top right. To open the entire search window, press Win+F (the button on your keyboard with the Windows logo). The same line is at the bottom of the start menu.
  3. Enter there the name or part of the name of the document with the .asd extension. Replace missing characters with * (asterisk). The search perceives this sign as a command "Any character can be here." A file without a name (unsaved to disk or forgotten) must be entered as "*.asd" (without quotes).
  4. Wait for the search to complete.
  5. Find a backup of your data in the results.
  6. Also try writing the name with a .wbk extension.

Option 2

Option 1 did not help? This means that there is simply no automatically saved document. But the data can be in temporary files.

  1. Open "My Computer".
  2. Click on the search bar. Filters will appear below it. Enter the date the document was last modified. You can set a range.
  3. Enter a name with .tmp extension. And it’s better to immediately look for “* .tmp”, since the system could change the name a little.
  4. A fairly large list will appear. But it may contain the necessary data.

Option 3

Temporary files are sometimes saved with ~ (tilde) at the beginning of the name. This symbol is tied to the same key as the letter "ё".

  1. In the search, enter the date or date range of the last modification.
  2. Write "~*.*" (without quotes). So the system will find all files whose name starts with a tilde.
  3. A list will appear. Try to find what you need in it.

These backups can be opened in Word in the same way as autosave.ads data. If none of the methods gave results, use file recovery utilities. For example, Perfect File Recovery or Recuva.
