In honor of the recent update to the iPod line, I decided to plunge into history and recall all the iPod models that came out from 2001 to the present day.

This will Short story iPod with photos and a brief description, the most important nuances in my opinion. Including I will touch on the latest update of the iPod Touch in a little more detail.

Players are listed in order of release.

There were only two iPod models: 5 and 10 gigabytes (moreover, the 10 gigabyte version was not released immediately). The battery could last up to 10 hours. The classic iPod had a mechanical scroll wheel. The player weighed 184 grams. First and latest model, which was exclusively supported by Mac OS.

In the second generation of the iPod, the storage capacity was increased: 10 and 20 gigabytes. Touch scroll wheel. Some of the second generation models were Windows-compatible through the Musicmatch Jukebox audio player program.

The third-generation iPod became thinner and had a completely non-mechanical control panel. Player memory sizes: 10 GB, 20 GB, 30 GB, 40 GB. Due to the reduction in size, the model could only work 8 hours without recharging.

The iPod Mini is not a very successful series that survived only two generations. The first was in production for 2 months. Important features: 4 gigabytes of memory, weight 103 grams, 8 hours of battery life, touch scroll wheel, like in the third generation of the classic iPod, but with the ability to click on it (additional actions - due to this, the 4 buttons above the wheel disappeared). The iPod Mini was sold in five colors (including gold).

Initially, the generation did not bode well for surprises. The first models were 20 and 40 gigabytes, had the same monochrome screen, but with an improved scroll wheel from the iPod Mini 1 Gen.

But on October 26, 2004, the Photo model with a color screen (220 by 176 pixels, 65536 colors) went on sale. This model allowed the storage and display of photographs. There are versions for 30 and 60 gigabytes.

A little later, the model was slightly modified and called the iPod Color. But the essence has not changed.

This tiny player gave a new experience to the users, making them listen to music completely at random. According to Apple, many users listened to music on the iPod in a random order, which is why the first iPod Shuffle as a reflection of trends.

Models with 512 megabytes or 1 gigabyte were available. The iPod Shuffle weighed a fantastic 22 grams and lasted 12 hours on a single charge.

Visually practically did not differ from the first generation. Added a model with a memory of 6 GB. The gold model is gone. Improved battery life up to 18 hours.

The iPod Nano was designed to replace the iPod Mini and combine the best of both the iPod Classic and the iPod Shuffle. The model was only two colors (white and black), weighed 42 grams and worked 15 hours on battery. Flash memory: 1, 2, 4 gigabytes. The display was 16 bits, resolution: 176 by 132.

The fifth generation is characterized by a complete redesign of the device, an enlarged screen for watching videos. Screen resolution 320 x 240 (QVGA). In 2006, after updating the model, the maximum amount of memory reached 80 gigabytes. Also, after updating the firmware, it became possible to run some games on the iPod.

The body of the iPod Nano is anodized aluminum. iPod Nano received 5 bright colors. Also for the first time there was a red iPod, from the sale of which $ 10 went to charity. The models were 2, 4, 8 gigabytes, and not all volumes were of all colors: for example, the 8 gigabyte model existed only in black and red.

October 2006- second generation iPod Shuffle

The miniature player has become even lighter - 15.6 grams. A clip appeared, which allowed you to cling the player to clothes. Memory capacity: 1 or 2 gigabytes. 9 colors that have been added over time.

Produced in three options: 80, 120, 160 gigabytes. The player worked from 30 to 40 hours on a single charge (audio), 5-6 hours (video). The front panel of the player was made of aluminum (previously made of plastic).

The model lived until 2014, until it was discontinued. This event marked the end of the classic iPod era.

September 5, 2007- 3rd generation iPod Nano

The player received cosmetic improvements. Brighter two-inch color display: 320 by 240. iPod Nano received new interface and support for new iPod games (Tetris, Ms. Pac-Man, Sudoku and others).

The first iPod with Wi-Fi and MultiTouch interface was released a little later than the first iPhone, as its more budgetary and stripped down counterpart. The player allowed to buy additional applications. The iPod Touch worked, like the iPhone, on iOS.

iPod touch in first three generations had a 3.5 inch touch screen 480 x 320 resolution. Only one Home button remains on the front panel. Battery life 22 hours audio and 5 hours video.

In the fourth generation, the iPod Nano was heavily redesigned again: the player was pulled out again, completely changed color scheme. Accelerometer added to iPod Nano horizontal mode because of the vertical screen. Models available: 4 GB (limited in some markets), 8 GB and 16 GB.

Small redesign. Important innovation: added Bluetooth. Extended battery life to 36 hours in audio mode and 6 hours in video mode.

The player was the first to use VoiceOver technology, which could voice artist names and song titles in 20 languages. For the first time in the series, support for multiple playlists. The weight of the player is a fantastic 10.7 grams. The amount of memory is 2 or 4 gigabytes.

The design of the fifth generation was very similar to the fourth. The screen was slightly increased to 376 by 220. A built-in video camera also appeared. The choice provided models with 8 and 16 gigabytes.

The design has not changed. Of the important innovations: a microphone has been added to the new headphones that come with the kit. Increased processor performance and RAM from 128 megabytes to 256. Added voice control function VoiceControl.

The player has become as small as possible. At the same time, he had a full-fledged bright touch screen (240 × 240), on which only one icon was placed. Video playback, camera and speakers have been removed. Weight - 21.1 grams. All the same 8 and 16 gigabytes are available. The iPod Nano added a clip (like the iPod Shuffle) and added the ability to attach a strap. Several options for displaying dials have been added to the interface. First signs of Apple Watch?

The triumph of minimalism in the series.

The smallest iPod in the world this moment. It is still produced and sold successfully. It is in demand among athletes because of its size and the presence of a clip.

The weight of the player is 12.5 grams, the battery lasts for 15 hours of listening to music. Anodized aluminum body. The memory size is only 2 gigabytes. In 2015, the player received a color redesign.

New slim design with dual cameras for Face Time calls and HD video recording (720p). The screen at the same dimensions has become more contrast, the resolution has increased to 960 by 640. Exactly the same Retina screen was used in the iPhone 4.

From Samsung processors, Apple switched to its Apple A4. The iPod Touch added an accelerometer and a gyroscope. Ended support in iOS 6.1.6.

Exclusively 16 gigabytes. iPod Nano once again pulled out. Apparently, the single-icon interface of the sixth generation was not very successful. The weight of the player is 31 grams. On April 15, 2015, the colors of the players changed.

The iPod Touch 5Gen received a 1136 x 640 resolution retina screen enlarged to 4 inches. RAM increased to 512 megabytes. Improved cameras. The rear camera allows you to shoot video in 1080p quality, photo 8 megapixels. Finally, the iPod Touch received some bright coloring. Memory sizes: 16, 32, 64 gigabytes. The port for connecting to a computer and charging has changed - now the iPod Touch comes with a USB-> Lightning cable.

iPod Touch 5G has Apple processor A5, exactly the same as in the iPhone 4S and iPad 2, which means it is comparable in performance to these devices. Supported by Apple until the release of iOS 9 in the fall.

Well Last update The iPod Touch happened very recently. Visually, the model is completely similar to the fifth generation, but there are several important improvements and changes.

  • The processor in the iPod Touch 6Gen immediately became A8 (with an M8 coprocessor). It is A8 and M8 installed in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
  • On sale there was a variation of the iPod 128 gigabytes.
  • RAM doubled to 1 gigabyte
  • 5 updated colors: gray space, blue, pink, gold and silver.
  • 8 megapixel iSight camera and advanced FaceTime HD front camera. The first question that arises is whether the camera is comparable to iPhone camera 6? No, she is a little worse and shoots at about the same level as iPad Air 2.
  • In the 6th generation, the notch for attaching the lace was removed. Now you can’t hang the player on your hand ...

Afterword

Here's a tour of history. I will stop for a while on the new iPod Touch.

The 6th generation of the iPod Touch is a significant leap forward in terms of performance. There is no redesign, because the 5th generation iPod Touch is already close to ideal in this parameter. To be honest, the fifth generation player is already starting to slow down on iOS 8.4 and iOS 9 (nothing surprising, given the weak processor). Therefore, Apple urgently needed to do something about it ... They did. It turned out to be a nice gadget in terms of capabilities at the level of the top iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

Buy or not iPod Touch 6 Gen? You decide. The price of the player compared to the iPhone is 2-3 times less (depending on the amount of memory). The iPod Touch has always been a cheap alternative to the iPhone without calling or GPS. Now almost nothing has changed, it's just that Apple has greatly reduced the gap between the top devices in the lines with this update. If you have an iPhone, I don’t see much point in buying an iPod Touch. If you need a high-quality music player with a good camera and the ability to install applications from App Store, and finances do not allow you to look in the direction of the iPhone, then the iPod Touch is a good investment.

Readers: What kind of iPod do you have? How do you use?

Apple has already released five beta versions operating system iOS 7.1, and users mobile devices under her control (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch) naturally wonder about the release of her final release. Developer builds of the new platform for apple devices that have already been tested report that using them makes their favorites much smoother and more stable. Particularly relevant is the question of the quality of the system for all generations of the iPad, as well as the old iPhone 4, on which it is simply impossible to use the "seven". When will "ordinary mortals" be able to upgrade their devices and experience all their delights to the fullest?

Not so long ago, the Cupertino team released the fifth beta version of the iOS 7.1 operating system, which should be the final one before its final release. Many Western resources, based on data from insiders and "spies" at Apple, say that it will not be long to wait: iOS 7.1 will become available ordinary users in the middle of March 2014.

As we can see from the beta versions of iOS 7.1, you should not expect any secret super-duper innovations. Yes, we will certainly see new elements of the system interface and small changes to the old ones, and more importantly, the system will contain many internal improvements that will make it smoother and more stable.

There is a possibility that the final iOS version 7.1 will include the final version of the iOS in the Car service, through which drivers of compatible cars will be able to control the functions of the iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch while driving their "iron horse". Most likely, users of the service will be able to call and send messages, get directions, switch songs and much more, without being distracted from the road. It will be possible to connect an iOS device to the car either via USB or wirelessly via AirPlay using Wi-Fi.

It's only a few weeks away from being able to go into settings and update your device to iOS 7.1 over the air, or connect to a computer and update via iTunes. Very soon we will see with our own eyes and will be able to use a heavily modified platform, which will become even more “ideal”. I am personally interested in only one question - will the Apple developers working on iOS 7.1 close the vulnerability for the possibility of carrying out the jailbreak procedure. This factor for me can become fundamental in the decision to switch to a new firmware.

Well, on the topic of the story - we have everything, we are waiting for March 15 (tentatively), 2014 together!

Apple iPod nano 7G and iPod touch 5G - and another revolution

Announcement: The new iPod touch no longer looks like an iPhone like two peas in a pod, and a brand new iPod nano can't be put on your wrist like a watch. And if the iPhone 5 and iPad Mini have been discussed for a long time, then the players did not get the deserved attention. How did they turn out, iPod nano 7G and iPod touch 5G?

“Comrades! The great revolution that the Bolsheviks have been talking about for so long has come to pass! It is with these words that one can begin the story of the new Apple iPod nano 7G and iPod touch 5G players. An attempt to make a revolution can still be called the previous generation of nano, but, perhaps, unsuccessful. The tiny player had problems with control and battery life, and I don’t even want to remember about video support. Fortunately, the fourth generation of touch was then decided not to be touched too much: the updates were only cosmetic, and quite successful, for example, the battery life increased.

What new will nano 7G and touch 5G bring? Immediately striking is the completely redesigned design of both players. The elongated and thin touch gets a white front panel, and on the back, mirror-polished aluminum is replaced by a matte painted surface that is completely resistant to fingerprints and scratches - the scourge of the iPhone / iPod touch since the first generation. In addition, the user now has the option to choose the color of the back cover. But Nano has already been completely redesigned again. The rectangular shape and video support are back, and the touch wheel, the iPod symbol, is gone, because now the touch screen takes up almost the entire surface. From the fourth to the fifth generation, the nano case narrowed to the edges, but now the player resembles the third generation nano in profile, but its overall thickness is much less - only 5.4 mm. Let's start with nano.

Contents of delivery

The delivery set is enclosed in the already familiar transparent plexiglass box. The kit itself is the same: updated in-ear headphones, a USB 2.0 cable for connecting the Lightning connector, a very short getting started guide. There are no CDs or large instruction books included. There is no additional software even in the memory of the player itself, so iTunes has to be downloaded from the company's website; The 64-bit version is loaded automatically.

The case has become completely new, and it has absorbed the features of nano players of several generations: the edges are from the third generation, the form factor is from the fourth or fifth. Moreover, of all the screens listed, it has the largest, and the dimensions are the smallest, including the thickness. Apple claims to care about environment and the health of player users, reporting that the glass of the new nano is free of arsenic, brominated flame retardants and mercury, and also reports that the player is highly recyclable.

This statement is once again amusing, because even the elderly nano does not want to be thrown away - most often it continues to work no worse than before. Often, when switching to a new generation, the user is more likely to give or sell the player to someone, but certainly will not send it for free processing.

Let's get back to the body. Externally, the device has become not so original, now it can be safely called a mini-version of the iPod touch - the new items are actually made in the same style. The front side is almost completely occupied by the screen, and at the bottom there is a single key.

The right side surface is empty, a pair of volume control keys is installed on the left, only the power button is located on top, and headphone jacks (mini-jack 3.5 mm) and Lightning are located below. It is noteworthy that the player does not have a lock slider.

Display and interface

The new nano is equipped with the largest display in the history of the line with a diagonal of 2.5 inches and a resolution of 240x432 pixels, plus it is touch-sensitive, as in the previous sixth generation. Viewing angles, color rendition, brightness reserve cause only positive emotions, in addition, when direct sunlight falls, the display only fades a little. Reactions to pressing are immediate, in addition, there is support for multi-touch gestures, which allows you to smoothly scale the photos loaded into the player. The interface has become a kind of hybrid of the fifth and sixth generation nano player menus. The main window is similar to the one in the sixth nano, but due to the increase in the display, two more icons fit vertically, and the rest of the menus have more similarities with the fifth generation. Below are some examples of display shots

Player features

In fact, there are no additional applications, because only the clock is available, which are installed as a screensaver. There are no games, no notes, no calendar, no alarm, much less contacts that could be synchronized with a PC in the fourth and fifth generation of nano. In addition, analog video output is no longer available, and there is no possibility of voice recording, although all this was in the ancestors. In general, many of the features that made it possible to use the tiny nano as something more than just a player were cut down.

Of the features of the device, one can note an analog clock (stopwatch and timer right there), a function voice guidance in the menu (VoiceOver), a foot pod, and an optional Nike + iPod feature that lets you collect run or walk data and sync it when you iTunes help. This function has been slightly improved, and now the pedometer functions much more correctly. The results of the work of this function are very funny to explore - sometimes it's hard to believe what distances are conquered in a day, but the tracker confirms this.

Do not forget about the function of controlling the iPod from the car radio. Of course, it is available only for iPod-enabled models, but for most modern radio tape recorders, this "trick" is already part of the minimum gentleman's set of functions. In addition, the player now has Bluetooth 4.0, thanks to which you can play audio songs through a Bluetooth headset and, more importantly, through the car's audio system, of course, if the latter has Bluetooth support. The function is very, very convenient, because you don’t have to connect a sync cable, and generally carry it with you, because the player is able to work on a single charge for more than a day, so it doesn’t need constant recharging from the car’s on-board network.

player

A photo

There are many supported formats - JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIFF, PSD (Mac only) and PNG, which is more than enough. In fact, there are no size restrictions, because iTunes allows you to upload photos from high resolution, but even high resolution photos are converted when transferred to the player. It is possible to view all photos in one list, as well as in separate folders. When viewing the contents of a folder, a matrix of 3x5 thumbnails is displayed. Thanks to support for multi-touch gestures, images are easy to scale, and not in steps, but smoothly. Images are rotated 90 degrees automatically when the player is rotated, while in the sixth generation this was done using a gesture. And if the sixth nano had this function just some kind of sophisticated mockery (the screen is square), then it would not hurt the current generation, because the photo can be taken in both landscape and portrait modes. Here it is impossible not to note the fact that the player can read camera position data from the image metadata, but, firstly, not all cameras are equipped with a position sensor, and secondly, photos processed in graphic packages do not have such information at all in meta tags. Slideshows no longer have a frame change mode setting and only set the viewing duration - 2, 3, 5, 10 and 20 seconds.

Voice recorder and FM radio

To use the player as a voice recorder up to the fifth generation of nano, an additional headset was required, in the fifth generation a built-in microphone appeared, and in the seventh ... the voice recorder function disappeared altogether. To listen to the radio, even up to the fifth generation, you had to buy an additional module, which was extremely inconvenient, plus everything is an additional cost, and iPods have never been cheap anyway. There is also a radio in the seventh generation, although after cutting down on the voice recorder function, it is already difficult to be surprised at any innovations. Fortunately, the FM radio function has not only survived, but has become much better, and there is progress in several directions.

The quality of reception has increased significantly, and when searching, the player quickly filled out a list of 30 stations. Here it’s worth making a reservation right away - only the frequency is displayed in the list of stations, without a name, and remembering the frequencies of all stations in the metropolis is very expensive, so you have to get out using the list of favorites. Secondly, the "Live pause" function, designed to pause and resume listening to the radio, now has a 30-minute buffer instead of a 15-minute one. As before, there is no sound recording, but you can mark the song, and then buy it in iTunes. However, this is quite expected, because Apple is fighting piracy like no other.

Video

In the past, there was no video support at all, in the fifth, the size and bitrate restrictions were as follows: the maximum resolution was 640x480 pixels, the speed was up to 30 fps, and the bitrate was up to 1.5 Mbps. In the new product, the restrictions are even less severe - the maximum resolution should not exceed 720x576, and the bit rate should not exceed 2.5 Mbps. In addition, it became possible to stretch the video, for example, videos with an aspect ratio of 4:3, in which the video itself is widescreen. During synchronization, it is possible to specify the video category - TV shows, rentals, movies or video clips. It is worth noting that the player supports multiple audio streams and subtitles, but it's hard to even imagine the ability to read subtitles on a small screen.

Changing the track manually leads to the output of a list of files of the selected category. There are two ways to rewind a track: the first is by holding down the rewind keys to make a fast transition with 10-second jumps, but it is quite difficult to catch a specific moment, although the rewind result is displayed in real time. The second and probably the most convenient way is to drag the rewind slider, as in the older iPod touch, which was not previously the nano series players. Like many modern compact players, the iPod nano 5G remembers where you left off watching a video, not only for the last watched video, but for all downloaded ones. From additional features it is worth noting the function of automatically rotating the image if the player was turned upside down, so that the video will never be played upside down.

Audio

There is no need to complain about the lack of supported formats in the case of the iPod nano, their list is quite extensive: AAC (from 8 to 320 kbps), protected AAC (from the iTunes Store), HE-AAC, MP3 (from 8 to 320 kbps) , MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3, 4, Audible Enhanced Audio, AAX and AAX+), Apple Lossless, AIFF and WAV. In general, only OGG and FLAC are missing, although the absence of the latter is quite understandable - there is its own “EPL” analogue. Melodies are downloaded in a standard way - via iTunes. The player allows you to display a list of all tunes, make a selection by artist, album, direction, composer or collection, and also display audio books separately. In addition, each song can be assigned a rating from 1 to 5. By the way, playlists can be created all in the same iTunes. It is also worth noting the functions automatic creation genius list, but for it to work, you must first activate this function in iTunes. Well, let's mention the function of arbitrary change of melody when shaking the player (when walking, spontaneous jumping of melodies does not occur, you need to shake the iPod to activate it).

Track navigation is organized in the same way as in the video player mode. The player has an equalizer, but manual settings no - you can only choose one of the presented presets of musical styles, and there are as many as 21 of them. The player has a volume limit mode at the level recommended in the European Union. As you know, listening to music for a long time at a high volume level can damage your hearing both temporarily and permanently, so Apple decided to play it safe, plus additionally draw attention to itself by taking care of its customers. When this limit is turned off, the volume can be raised by about a quarter, but at the same time, the level bar on the icon that appears turns orange and a small inscription "High volume" appears.

The iPod touch costs a lot more than the nano, and it comes with the same package, and even the headphones are packaged in the same way. The only difference is the mounting strap, which first appeared in the iPod players.

Appearance and usability

For iPod touch from the first to the fourth generation, the comparison of appearance turned into a game of “find 10 differences”, which were often not typed, the fifth generation looks completely different. Only rounded corners and a key on the front panel remind of the former touch, and even that, along with the panel, changed color from black to white. But this is not all changes in appearance. The mass of the device has significantly decreased, the back surface is not mirrored, but matte, so the new product is not afraid of scratches, and now there is a choice of color. The case profile has become completely different, and in parallel the player has noticeably lost weight.

Despite this, the rigidity of the case has increased markedly - such a thin and large device is theoretically easy to bend, but the iPod touch does not give in even under strong pressure. Part of that is to be thanked. new profile covers with a large number of stiffness faces.

In addition, a tiny but bright LED flash appeared on the back surface next to the camera lens, and at the bottom there is an original fastening cord, and the connector is now new - Lightning. While maintaining the width of the device, the body length has increased slightly, which is associated with the installation of a larger display.

Separately, I would like to note the mounting strap: earlier in the iPod touch it was not, which is why not a single display crashed.

When using a fastening cord, the likelihood of such a situation is negligible. The cord does not interfere with using the player at all, and not only in the player mode, but also when surfing the web or when working with the camera. If it is not needed, then the mount can be hidden with one light touch.

Display and interface

Screens have always been something to be proud of, both on the iPhone and the iPod. The display was great in the ancestor, but in the new product it has become even better. Firstly, the diagonal was increased - from 3.5 to 4 inches, and secondly, the resolution also increased - 960x640 pixels to 1136x640 pixels. The viewing angles are huge, the color reproduction is excellent, there is a very large margin of brightness, so on a cloudy day you don’t have to twist the backlight level by more than 50%. The display protection is extremely durable and does not scratch, so nothing threatens the matrix even with strong pressure. Below are some examples of screenshots.

Separately, it is worth noting the possibility of calibrating the display. In our case, we used a Datacolor Spyder 4 colorimeter, for which there is an application in the Apple iStore. At the maximum brightness of the backlight, the measurement of the luminosity of the white field showed a result of 470.1 cd / sq.m. At the same time, the luminosity of the black field was only 0.51 cd/m2, which gives a static contrast of 922:1.

To evaluate the color gamut, a Spyder 4 colorimeter was used. As you can see in the graph, the color gamut is quite large - 96% of sRGB, which is a very good indicator. In the graph below, the red curve is the iPod touch display and the green curve is the standard sRGB color space.

Gamut chart for L=50

The illustrations below show the gamma curves (black graphs) obtained before and after display calibration, the target gamma 2.2 (light blue graph) and the correction for each color (red, blue, green). As you can see in the graphs, even without calibration, the result is close to the target gamma.

Player features and performance

It is difficult to describe the features of the player: a variety of alarm clocks, contacts, notebooks, data transfer, connection to the audio system via a wireless channel, and so on, cannot be attributed to the features of the player, because many programs can be installed independently from the App Store. Only the Maps application deserves special attention, and we have already paid this attention to it. Fortunately, you can install such Yandex programs as Maps and Navigator for free, but use them, as well as the native application, outside the coverage area WiFi networks will not work.

But the camera and the powerful A5 processor should be counted among the features of the player. The main camera is 5-megapixel, with a fixed focal length and without the ability to control aperture opening. But the player in shooting mode boasts a dynamic range expansion function by gluing frames with different exposures - HDR, as well as a mode for creating automatic panoramas and face detection. Unfortunately, there are very few settings for shooting parameters, or rather, they do not exist at all, so the automation sets not only the shutter speed, but also the sensitivity level.

Snapshot examples

A powerful processor and video subsystem allow you to turn the player into a full-fledged portable game console. Of course, there are not so many really high-quality games for iOS now, but their number is constantly growing. Back to performance, for example, the popular fifth-gen shooter Shadowgun on the fifth-generation iPod touch works great at maximum rendering quality settings, while all movements are smooth and there is not a hint of braking. In general, we can say that the performance of the video subsystem at the current stage is enough for the eyes. Performance testing in the Linpack package produced almost the same results as at the time for the iPhone 4S.

In SunSpider, when using the built-in Safari browser, the player gains 1773.3 ms, which again almost exactly repeats the results of the iPhone 4S. In general, even without the characteristics declared by the manufacturer, it is clear that the stuffing of the tested player corresponds to the iPhone of the previous generation.

player

A photo

The player supports quite a lot of image file formats: JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIFF, PSD (for Mac) - in general, there should be no problems with image playback. The root menu of the photo viewer contains all the directories of the first level and the "photoarchive" submenu - it contains absolutely all the photos stored in the player's memory. When opening the catalog, 24 preview icons are displayed (4x6 matrix). Thanks to the built-in accelerometer, the image can be rotated 90, 180 and 270 degrees. There are two ways to scale images: double-clicking on an image to double it, or dragging with two fingers. The selected picture can be assigned to a contact from the address book, sent by e-mail, via Twitter or Facebook, made wallpaper, and also printed, but last function available only if the printer is equipped with a Bluetooth module, and there are few of them, to put it mildly.

Dictaphone

There is nothing unusual - you can record the sound and listen to it. Only two buttons and a recording indicator are available. The quality is good, and for the built-in microphone in the player it is absolutely excellent.

Video

The display of the novelty has become even larger and even better, so the video mode is undoubtedly the player’s forte. As before, the player swallows video with a bitrate of up to 35 Mbps, but now it is possible to play videos in 1080p, while the ancestor rested on 720p. However, as before, the vast majority of the media library must be converted before synchronization. Fortunately, there are a lot of free converters optimized for converting video for Apple players. Movies are transferred using iTunes, it also allows you to create video playlists with the ability to cycle through and shuffle. The player remembers the place where the viewing of each of the videos was stopped, and rewinding the track, thanks to the touch screen, is done with one touch. As in previous generations of iPod touch, if necessary, videos can be placed in the same list with music, or create a separate playlist with video files, which is also very convenient. The YouTube app is understandably missing, but it can be downloaded for free from the App Store. When watching streaming youtube video, As in normal mode, 1080p supported

Audio

The number of supported audio formats is quite large, except for open OGG and FLAC. The first Apple simply does not recognize, and for the second it has its own analogue - ALAC. Playlists can be created both in iTunes and on the player itself. In addition to the standard selection by artist, song, album and genre, a selection of a collection, author, podcast is provided. It is possible to scroll through the selection in the usual way, as well as to switch between capital letters, and not only Latin, but also Cyrillic. Now the Cyrillic names are at the top, and not at the bottom of the list, as it was in the fourth generation of touch. Navigating through albums is also possible in the proprietary Cover Flow mode (scrolling through covers in portrait orientation). The following modes are available for sample playback: simple, sample repeat, song repeat, and random playback. Of course, the function of a random change of melody when shaking the player is also available.

Testing

The audio path was tested in the popular RightMark Audio Analyzer test package using the Creative E-MU 0202 USB audio interface. All special effects are disabled, the equalizer settings are set to default. For comparison purposes, the overall results table shows measurements for iPod nano 6G and iPod touch 4G. The results of both players are almost flawless, although the previous models also performed very well.

Headphones

Both players use brand new EarPods headphones, which, according to the manufacturer, have become better, moreover, they were developed in such a way as to suit most users. Apparently, the author of this article did not get into the majority: the headphones seemed completely uncomfortable, moreover, they constantly fell out, which did not even happen with the previous model. But in terms of sound quality, there really is progress: at least a burning desire to urgently connect more quality headphones did not occur. The sound became more detailed, more pronounced bass appeared, and in general the sound became much more pleasant.

Menu, programs and firmware

The process of "flashing" iPod players is extremely simple, you just need to download and install the iTunes program, and it will do everything by itself. The firmware can also be downloaded separately. If you “lock up” the player with incorrect firmware, you should not be upset - it is impossible to completely “kill” the iPod in this way. To restore, just click the "Restore" button in iTunes, and in no time the patient will be resuscitated.

Offline work

If for several recent generations of iPod nano manufacturer invariably stated the duration of playing audio files for 24 hours, then for the novelty it is stated for 6 hours more. In practice, when playing mp3 with a bitrate of 320 kbps, the player turned off after 34 hours and 52 minutes, which is quite good, especially in light of the fact that nano 6G did not even reach the declared day by almost 4 hours. The nano 6G did not play video, but the nano 5G, similar in form factor, was able to play the video for 5 hours 54 minutes with the declared 5 hours. For the novelty, even the declared result is more modest - 3.5 hours, and in practice, when playing the same video as when testing the nano 5G, the player turned off after 3 hours and 27 minutes.

Claimed playback time for the iPod touch 4G was 40 and 7 hours, respectively, but in practice the result was slightly worse. Testing when playing mp3 was carried out for a set of files with a bit rate of 128 kbps and half the volume level - in these "touch" conditions fourth generation lasted 38 hours 24 minutes. In the video file playback mode, an mpeg4 (H264) file with a bitrate of 1.5 Mbps (obtained using Free Video to iPod converter, iPod touch preset) was used at half volume and backlight brightness. The measurement result is 7 hours 57 minutes. By the way, Apple itself for the iPod touch 5G promises the same performance as its predecessor when playing music, and an hour better for video, and this is with a larger display. The test results were very impressive. When playing mp3 with a bitrate of 320 kbps, the player did not last only 13 minutes to 50 hours! The player also performed well when playing video - an mpeg4 (H264) file with a bit rate of 2.5 Mbps (the same Free Video to iPod converter package was used for conversion) played for 10 hours and 14 minutes. An excellent result, and there is nothing more to add.

PC connection types

The iPod nano player is connected to the PC via USB in USB Mass Storage mode, that is, it can be used as a large “flash drive”, but downloading the content being played is possible only using iTunes. iPod touch connects in MTP mode, but content is closed to the user in this mode, and only a folder with screenshots and material captured by the player's camera is available.

Conclusion

The iPod nano has actually gone through two revolutions in two generations. The first, in the case of the sixth generation, was unsuccessful, but the seventh generation, despite the reduction in a number of functions that were in the 4th and 5th iPods, has grown qualitatively relative to all its predecessors. It has a large display, and at the same time small overall dimensions and scanty thickness, and the mini touch design is very successful. The sound quality is very high, according to this indicator, the nano is only slightly inferior to the older model, although the frequency response is even a bit more uniform than that of the touch 5G. Bluetooth support is also a big plus for the player. In terms of battery life, the new nano is much better than the sixth generation, but inferior to the fifth in video player mode. Although there is, say, Sony series WALKMAN NWZ-S700BT, whose representatives last even longer.

As for touch, there is a huge qualitative breakthrough, starting from the display and case design and ending with the filling and playback quality. During testing, the player showed impressive results: for example, the noise level is -105.7 dB (A), and this is the best indicator among all mobile devices that have been tested with us for all the time, and the gap from the pursuers is significant. In terms of filling, the player is identical to the iPhone 4S, so it can, or rather, be used as a portable game console, because it can easily handle any modern games. In the offline mode, the measurement results significantly exceeded the declared ones, and even more so - the indicators of the ancestor.

Separately, it is worth noting the accessories of the players. These are new, much better headphones and a more comfortable Lightning sync cable. In general, even a fan of Android and Sony is hard not to admit: the players were a success.

Thank you for the provided hardware distributor Apple Inc. in Ukraine, company .

On May 28, Apple introduced the seventh generation iPod Touch. The novelty has not received the expected redesign in the style of the iPhone X, but it has acquired a more productive stuffing that will allow it to compete with the line of classic iPads.

Now its hardware is based on the A10 Fusion processor, and the amount of internal memory is 32, 128 or 256 GB - a major upgrade that will provide ample opportunities for content consumption using Apple services.

The year 2001 was marked by two important events at once. First, at the very beginning of this year, in January, the iTunes music service was introduced. A service without which not a single user of Apple products can imagine their life now. And in October, he showed the world the first iPod, the first "apple" player, which marked the beginning of a revolution in this promising and profitable market. Yes, it happened 18 years ago.

For many years, before the advent of the iPhone, the broad masses of the advanced public associated with the iPod music player. "A thousand songs in your pocket!" - with such a slogan in 2001, Jobs presented to the public a snow-white handsome man with no less snow-white headphones. It is now that such “gags” have become everyday life, but then it was still necessary to look for such things on the radio markets and Gorbushka. The base 5 gigabytes of memory seemed like something cosmic. An impressive size by today's standards (two audio cassettes stacked on top of each other) and connection to iTunes did not prevent music lovers from all over the world from falling in love with this device, and the line of players developed happily for the next decade.

The main news of the outgoing week, of course, was the release of the new iPod. To be honest, after that, there was only one phrase in my head: “Are they all there, fucked up?”. Really, to release the same device as a few years ago, just with a new processor and 256 GB of memory?

This week Apple was unexpected for almost everyone and absolutely expected for me. The novelty has acquired a more advanced hardware filling, but retained the appearance of the previous generation model, which became the reason for the dissatisfaction of the vast majority of brand fans. My colleague Maxim Kostenkov even wrote in which he christened updated player a failed product that has no place in model range Apple. But I tend to think otherwise. Why, now I will explain.

The release of the iPod Touch 7 was a real surprise for many. Most users have not been able to explain to themselves the existence of the player, which for some unknown reason continues to receive hardware updates, while maintaining the appearance of almost five years ago. But personally, I am absolutely sure that the new iPod definitely has its place in the market. But can he fulfill the role of replacing the iPhone and provide support for such key accessories as

Presentation Apple iPhone 8, which will host the official announcement of the new iPhones, will be held on September 12 at 20:00 Moscow time. Kanobu will hold a live broadcast in Russian, during which you will learn all the most important things: specifications, the official release date of the iPhone 8 in Russia and prices in rubles.

Watch the broadcast iPhone presentations 8 will be available on our website or on YouTube, it starts a little earlier than the conference itself, at 19:45 Moscow time. Here's everything we already know about the iPhone 8 and other new products.

What will be shown at the Apple presentation?

First of all - new smartphones: iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X, which is commonly called the "eighth". Apparently, we will not see the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus - in 2017, Apple celebrates the anniversary of its most popular device, so they decided to abandon the usual scheme.

In addition to iPhones, the presentation will most likely show new model Apple Watch 3, wireless headphones AirPods 2, iPod Touch 7 and iOS 11.

What's new in iPhone 8?

New Apple smartphones are equipped with a new generation A11 processor and use fundamentally new design- The iPhone 8 (or iPhone X) is expected to have a full screen bezel except for a slight bulge at the top edge.

Because of this, the new iPhone will not have a Home button, it will be replaced by the on-screen Home, which will be able to perceive not only pressing, but also gestures. As you know, Apple abandoned the physical button back in the iPhone 7; in the current model, under the screen there is a round platform with a fingerprint sensor, pressing which imitates the Taptic Engine vibration motor.

The iPhone 8 won't have a fingerprint sensor or a headphone jack either. For safe unlocking, according to rumors, the system of ultrasonic face recognition of the owner is responsible.

What's new in iOS 11?

In iOS 11 for the first time in 10 years of the existence of the operating system will appear file manager, which will allow you to save files in the memory of your smartphone (or tablet) and move them between folders. In addition, the Files app will have built-in cloud integration. iCloud services and Dropbox, making it easy to move documents, photos, and other files between devices in the Apple ecosystem.

Also in iOS 11 there will be an updated curtain "Control Center" and the Dock panel, icons quick access where you can customize as you wish.

The camera software, iTunes, App Store will also be redesigned, the iPad will have the function of launching two applications on one screen.
