ASUS pioneered the production of netbooks and still remains among the leaders both in terms of assortment and in terms of sales of these inexpensive mininotebooks. However, in recent years there has been an opinion that the design of Eee PC netbooks is pretty boring, and we completely agree with this. With the exception of the rather expensive (and therefore not very popular) modifications 1008, 1016 and 1018, all ASUS netbooks look almost the same. And if for corporate devices the constancy of style is only welcome, then it seriously interferes with portable consumer models.

Not surprisingly, in 2012, ASUS decided to change the design, albeit not very significant. First, the budget thin X101 models were released, and then the revision of the entire model range began. Our review considers new model 25 series, the Eee PC 1025C "universal" mid-range netbook that will form the basis of the ASUS netbook lineup in 2012.

Specifications

As you know, numerous models of ASUS netbooks differ from each other, firstly, in the design of external panels, and secondly, in the composition of interfaces and peripherals. Model Eee PC 1025C will most likely be placed in the middle of the future line.

The netbook in question is built on the new Intel Atom platform, codenamed Cedar Trail. AT this moment Intel releases only two third-generation Atom processors - N2600 and N2800, differing in clock speed and power consumption, and both are installed in the Eee PC 1025C netbook. The amount of RAM is 1 or 2 GB, depending on the configuration. The netbook has a thin 7 mm hard drive up to 320 GB, a card reader with support for SD / SDHC cards, a VGA webcam (0.3 MP), and a built-in microphone. The set of interfaces is almost standard for modern generation netbooks: three USB 2.0, wired and wireless network, VGA and HDMI. The manufacturer also promises modifications with the addition of a USB 3.0 controller. The functionality of the netbook is reduced in only one aspect: the second speaker is removed and there is no way to connect an external microphone.

Unfortunately, the new generation netbook is made out of service by the owner himself. The case consists of two halves, there is no removable cover. There are no SO-DIMM slots inside for increasing RAM: developers, in order to save space on system board they were not foreseen. The hard drive can theoretically be replaced, but only with the same thin, low capacity (due to the design features).

Traditionally, ASUS equips most netbooks with a larger capacity battery. Our device has a 6-cell battery with a nominal capacity of 56 Wh, “overclocked” by the manufacturer to 57.7 Wh. The official website claims that the charge of such a battery will last for 12 hours of continuous operation, but most likely this result was obtained with total absence loads. Knowing ASUS's excessive optimism in this matter, we dare to assume that in reality the results will be less impressive.

Thus, we are talking about a fairly standard new generation netbook, which differs from most analogues, firstly, by an increased battery capacity (not in all configurations), and secondly, by reduced built-in sound capabilities. Obviously, the device can only attract the attention of buyers with an interesting design.

Design and construction

The Eee PC 1025C netbook belongs to the new Flare series: it can be distinguished from the previous Seashell series by the "25" index in the model number. New design, in our opinion, turned out to be more elegant, modern and at the same time practical. The body of the netbook has become flatter (although it still has a rounded puffy shape), the corners are not rounded, but slightly trimmed, like in ASUS U series laptops. Neat chrome sidewalls have appeared, slightly beveled down, the ends are more carefully designed.

The interior finally got rid of the annoying gloss: the wrist rest and keyboard area are made in one piece of rough matte plastic. The touchpad is located in a small recess, has the same texture as the panel surrounding it, and is equipped with a solid chrome button. The frame of the screen is matte embossed, with an imitation of rough polishing, the bottom is also embossed, but under a rough fabric. All materials are very practical, they do not get dirty from fingers at all, they are easy to clean - care for the device has become much less complicated than in the case of previous ASUS netbooks.

Since the 1025C is universal, it is available in several discreet colors: black, white, blue, dark red. The cover of the netbook can be rough matte, like our test copy, or smooth glossy, without patterns. There is also a pale pink and brown version available only in a matte finish. The Eee PC 1025CE netbook, which is completely identical in characteristics, design and design, is also being produced, which has a more catchy color scheme.

In general, the design of the case makes a favorable impression. A very rigid hard cover is mounted on fairly tight hinges with a confident move and no play. All panels fit well and are firmly connected, the existing gaps are beaten in design and do not spoil appearance device. The case has a good margin of rigidity, does not bend when squeezed, does not crunch. The keyboard is less securely fixed - with strong pressing, the keys are recessed more than usual, but in general there are no problems when typing.

Meticulously evaluating the design of the model, we found only two drawbacks: firstly, the battery protrudes by 6 mm, lifting the netbook above the table, and secondly, the tilt angle of the screen, including due to the battery, is limited to 130°. The rest of the Eee PC 1025C is a fairly light, compact and neat device with a comfortable body shape and practical finish.

Our test copy was equipped with a matte LCD matrix from a not very well-known manufacturer IVO (Infovision). We note right away that we did not like the image quality: firstly, the viewing angles are very limited, with strong color and brightness distortions with a slight deviation of the gaze from the perpendicular, and secondly, due to the low contrast, the image seems fuzzy, unclear.

The color gamut of the matrix is small, only green shades are normally reproduced, and blue and red are not clear and bright enough. The picture on the screen is too cold and generally has an unpleasant tint. Despite the finely tuned gamma and margin of brightness, the overall image quality is below average.

Sound

Unfortunately, in the Eee PC 1025C netbook, the developers saved on one speaker. Therefore, the built-in sound is suitable only for the simplest tasks - sound indication, video dubbing, etc. The netbook also has one audio connector, designed for connecting headphones, external speakers or headsets. On the other hand, to transmit sound to good quality you can use HDMI, and for video calls, the capabilities of built-in devices are quite enough.

Keyboard

The new models of ASUS netbooks inherited the keyboard from their predecessors without changes. Except that the glossy substrate gave way to a more practical matte one, the same color and texture as the rest of the panels. The layout of the flat rough keys is quite convenient: the horizontal pitch of the keys is 92% of the norm, vertically - 86%, the layout is almost complete, with all service keys preserved. Some inconvenience can deliver a shortened right Shift. The keypad is provided with well-read color symbols: Cyrillic is green, icons of "hot" combinations are grey-blue.

The keyboard mechanism did not seem ideal to us. It's good, of course, that the key travel is normal, not shortened (2 mm). However, the membranes have excessive elasticity, they are strongly springy, the response threshold is felt approximately in the middle of the key travel. I also did not like that the keys dangle slightly, in some places they noticeably rattle.

Buttons, indication

The ASUS netbook does not have additional keys, although many Eee PC models used to have a power-saving mode switch key. The indicators are implemented in the same way as most other ASUS laptops: colored LEDs with contrasting markings are located under the touchpad. When the lid is closed, they are clearly visible, and this is an absolute plus.

touchpad

Eee PC 1025C netbooks have Elan or Sentelic touchpads, our copy had the former. The touchpad area seems quite large, but the actual size of the touch area is smaller, about 70x32 mm. The rough surface is not very pleasant, and the finger slides along it with difficulty, although in general the usability is average for netbooks.

The controller supports 2- and 3-finger actions, but due to the small size of the touchpad (especially in height), it is difficult to use them. The chrome-plated one-piece button has a fairly large stroke and a quiet click, it does not differ in special convenience.

Performance

Having previously tested several netbooks with the Atom N2600 processor, we did not get a satisfactory result: the performance of the new Intel platforms for netbooks remained at the same low level as before. Maybe the Atom N2800 processor, whose frequency is 15% higher, will rehabilitate the platform?

Alas, according to several tests, a netbook with an Atom processor still loses not only to cheap laptops with a Celeron processor, but also to netbooks based on AMD platform. We compared with the data obtained when testing netbooks (AMD E-450) and (Atom N2600).

In the embedded test Windows processor Atom was highly rated for the same video processing, but fell short in other metrics AMD processor E-450.

As before, attempts to run graphics benchmarks and games ended in failure.

Time battery life

56 Wh plus battery new processor Atom - and the netbook without problems works more than 7 hours when using Wi-Fi and more than 8 hours - without access to a wireless network.

The average power consumption of the ASUS netbook in the MobileMark 2007 test, however, turned out to be higher than expected - about 6.2 watts. The maximum operating time without recharging, which we managed to get in the MobileMark 2007 test (brightness at 125 cd/m2, network interfaces disabled), turned out to be noticeably less than the promised 12 hours.

Noise and heat

In the new ASUS netbook, the size of the cooling system is smaller than in previous models from this manufacturer, but the processor, thanks to more modern technology production consumes much less. In our opinion, in this model, the developers have achieved the optimal balance between heat removal efficiency and noise level. Yes, the netbook heats up a little more than its counterparts: at idle, the processor temperature is 50°, and the panels under the wrists and the bottom are constantly warm, but at maximum load, the processor temperature does not exceed 67°, and the noise remains quite weak, inaudible in conditions, for example , office.

The case heats up significantly only in the radiator area from below (40-44°) and from above (34°, left side of the keyboard), the bottom is noticeably warm (32-37°), but the wrist area does not heat up above 32°. Recall that we had a configuration with the N2800 processor, the heat dissipation of which is much higher than that of the N2600 processor, but it was quite comfortable to use the netbook under load. What can not be said about the devices of the previous generation.

Conclusion

The next ASUS netbook will certainly find its buyer, despite the relatively high cost. We liked its neat discreet design, durable practical body, big choice color options. The device does not make noise, has a performance adequate to its hardware platform, works up to 9 hours from the battery. I didn't like the screen, the keyboard mechanism, the tilt angle of the screen, the inability to easily disassemble the case for modernization and cleaning. It turns out that in this model more attention is paid to appearance, practicality and functionality and less to ergonomics. Well, such an approach has the right to exist.

Advantages:

  • new neat design;
  • matte non-staining panels;
  • Rugged one-piece lid and body construction
  • the presence of HDMI and three USB ports;
  • familiar keyboard layout;
  • capacious battery;
  • quiet work.

Flaws:

  • low screen quality;
  • inconvenient keyboard mechanism;
  • protruding battery;
  • small tilt angle of the screen;
  • one speaker, one audio jack;
  • rather high cost.

We haven't written about netbooks for ages. No wonder: these workers of the budget front have been overshadowed by numerous tablets, smartphones and ultrabooks. The eclipse is not market, but informational: in fact, in order to pick up a tablet with an attached keyboard, which, in terms of weight, size and price, will match modern netbooks, you need multi-stage dances with tambourines. So it's too early to write off netbooks, according to Asus, in particular (tablets and ultrabooks, by the way, they are also developing very actively). The company, which has become a pioneer of "netbook building", with enviable regularity offers new models of these small and inexpensive devices. ASUS Eee PC 1025C - 10-inch netbook weighing just over a kilogram, with Intel processor Atom on board… Sounds painfully familiar? Let's see what has changed.

ASUS Eee PC 1025C - a 10-inch netbook weighing a little over a kilogram, with an Intel Atom processor on board ... Sounds painfully familiar? Let's see what has changed.

Specifications ASUS Eee PC 1025C

At first it seems - nothing new, technical Specifications The PC 1025C is not too far removed from the netbooks of two or three years ago. Naturally, this is not so, there is a very important difference, and its name is the Intel Cedar Trail platform. Its main plus is the performance sufficient for playing HD-video, as well as more economical power consumption (TDP - 6.5 W).

  • Operating system: Windows 7 Starter.
  • CPU: Intel Atom N2800 (1.8 GHz).
  • Display: 10.1 inches, 1024x600 pixels, matte.
  • RAM: 1 GB, DDR3-1333.
  • Storage device: 320 GB, 5400 RPM.
  • Video adapter: Intel GMA 3600 (integrated graphics).
  • Communications: WiFi 802.11b/g/n.
  • Battery: 3 cells, 2600 mAh.
  • Ports and connectors: 3xUSB 2.0, combo mic/headphone jack, network port, HDMI, VGA, card reader.
  • Dimensions and weight: 262x178x21~34 mm, 1.08 kg.
  • Webcam: 0.3 MP.

Design and construction

Quite decent appearance, typical for Asus netbooks. A neat and unassuming design is best described as neutral. The case is made of plastic, from the side of the cover - hard, smooth and almost not easily soiled. A similar coating went to the under-palm space and the edging of the keyboard.

On the bottom side, the plastic is more practical, with a texture applied, a rather thick display frame is made of matte rough plastic. The netbook is far from flat (in the most prominent place - in the battery area - its thickness reaches 34 millimeters), but, compact in other two dimensions, the Eee PC 1025C weighs a little over a kilogram. This is with a three-cell battery. Of course, a six-cell cell will increase not only the battery life by half, but also the mass of grams by 150. But in general, compactness is commendable. It will easily fit into a medium-sized women's handbag.

Together with the 11-inch MacBook Air

The case is made of sufficient quality. The hinges fix the lid very firmly at any possible angle (the maximum is about 135 degrees, which is quite acceptable for working with a netbook on your lap).

Under pressure, the case does not bend or creak. Only the frame bordering the display barely noticeably "fidgets" when you click on it. However, it is important to mention that a sample fell into our hands. However, even if this feature is preserved in copies for sale, it is unlikely that it will be a serious problem for anyone.

Display

with 11" MacBook Air

The best thing about this 10-inch display is the lack of glare. It is matte, which favorably affects reading from the screen. The resolution of 1024x600 pixels, of course, is not the best, even considering the small diagonal. Those who have never worked with other 10-inch netbooks (most of them have a similar resolution) will find it somewhat unusual to surf the Internet or type texts: you will have to use scrolling more often. Viewing angles, brightness, contrast, color gamut - everything is at the level of a very simple, very budget matrix. However, no one promised anything else. The screen allows you to read and watch movies.

Keyboard and touchpad

Asus managed to cram a quite tolerable keyboard into such a small case. It is made according to the island principle, and the main keys (letters, numbers) are close to the normal size, while the functional keys, arrows and a number of others are made in half size and are slightly clamped. The tactile response is clear, shallow, pleasant. However, most men will not be very comfortable typing long texts: after all, the buttons are smaller than standard ones. But women and children are likely to adapt to the features of the keyboard easily.

The touchpad is quite small, with one physical button (hard, I must say). You can get used to it, but any external mouse will greatly facilitate the life of the netbook owner.

System and performance

Netbooks in terms of performance have never had stars from heaven. Actually, they shouldn't. However, how I would like to see a little more nimble work of Intel Atom processors running pre-installed operating systems! After all, there are a lot of custom operating systems with which netbooks are capable, if not of the first cruising speed, then of confident work that does not cause associations with a senseless waste of time in queues.

Nevertheless, if you abandon a number of bad habits of "high performance" (100,500 applications running simultaneously just in case, and about the same number of windows open in the browser), then you can make such a computer work at an acceptable speed. Windows 7 Starter booted in 53 seconds, which is quite normal for a netbook. Eee PC 1025C coped with HD-video playback (after installing incomplete codecs and a player, it slowed down a lot with relatives). Work with text editor quite comfortable, but the processing of spreadsheets required perseverance and patience. The speed of the file copy operation is also not the best, and, naturally, this computer is not designed for games. Well, except for Minesweeper or not the newest quests.

Synthetic tests are a direct confirmation of the low performance of the netbook: 3DMark06 rated the graphics capabilities of the device at 374 points, PCMark 7 gave a score of 699 for overall performance. Nevertheless, the device is quite suitable for working with texts, watching movies and browsing the Internet. By the way, for knowledgeable in perversions those who want to speed up their work on the Internet, in addition to Windows 7 Starter, the netbook has a proprietary cloud shell ASUS Express Gate installed. It consists of 9 windows that group the available cloud applications. Among them - Applications, Online Video, Facebook, Weather, Browser ( Google Chrome), Calendar, Games, Documents, Photos and Music. It was supposed that such a lightweight shell would work quickly and smoothly, but we did not notice this. Its interface clearly needs reworking in terms of speed and design optimization.

Autonomy, noise, heating

The 3-cell battery is easily removed from the case. There is also a configuration option with a 6-cell

The netbook works long enough: 5 hours 20 minutes - its result in reading mode, in a classic load the model lasted a little less than three hours. When working with a six-cell battery, a double increase in battery life is expected. The device is heating up .. Yes, it almost does not heat up. Even when playing streaming videos, it could be placed on your lap without the slightest risk of getting burned or the like. And, by the way, you won't hear much noise when the Eee PC 1025C is running.

Competitors

Among direct competitors - Acer netbook Aspire One D270. It, like the hero of our review, is based on the new Cedar Trail platform and has approximately the same characteristics. True, its mass is somewhat larger than that of the Eee PC 1025C, but the Bluetooth module is in place. By the way, Eee PC 1025C has an older brother - Eee PC 1025CE. This model is slightly more expensive, but it also has Bluetooth and a better screen.

In the dry matter

If you have a need to purchase an extremely budget and lightweight portable computer, and at the same time a Chinese tablet does not suit you for some reason (for example, because of the need to type a large number of texts), it is quite possible to direct your gaze towards modern netbooks. The Asus Eee PC 1025C is light, equipped with a fairly comfortable keyboard and a large number of ports, well built, and allows you to watch HD movies. Surprised by the lack of a Bluetooth module. Not that it is absolutely necessary for everyone, but why not? The displayed battery life is typical of netbooks, as is the screen. Such a machine could also be recommended to children as the first personal computer. Although this target audience I would like to offer a better screen. 4 reasons to buy Asus Eee PC 1025C:

  • Durable and lightweight body
  • Lots of connectors
  • Ability to play HD movies
  • low cost

2 reasons not to buy Asus Eee PC 1025C:

  • Mediocre screen
  • No bluetooth module

    Stylish design. The workmanship is wonderful. Small size, lightweight, comfortable keyboard. True, the keys sometimes need to be pressed a little harder. Windows7 starter is easily modified to an acceptable form without illegal hacking by the free program Personalization Panel))

    Dimensions, weight - matte screen - good stuffing for this class of devices - HDMI connects to a large TV or monitor, very convenient for watching movies - in principle, it can be easily disassembled - the memory is not soldered, it is possible to replace

    Proc n2800 - Price - Appearance - Batteries (6 cells) last for 6-8 hours

    2 years ago 0

    Nimble, the screen is good, the price is seven basic (not a starter).

    2 years ago 0

    Sturdy, comfortable, light, good design. Among the 10-inch models, the screen dangles the least. The battery lasts a long time. I'm up to full discharge I didn’t finish it, but on the road for reading at low brightness it really lasts for a long time. On the fully charged the indicator shows 10 (!) hours. It is convenient to read on the train in a compartment when you can't sleep. I put it on my stomach. More convenient than even on a tablet. No need to constantly hold it in your hands. With such a size and battery, it is convenient to use in field conditions. Convenient clave. Sufficient performance for a viewer-reader. The system does not slow down. The screen is tightly fixed, does not dangle. Everything you need from a cheap netbook.

    1. Fast processor (by netbook standards). 2. Design 3. MATTE!!! screen, in this world they still do something for normal people =) 4. Battery life. 6+ hours under load. 5. Black color.

    2 years ago 0

    even by modern standards, i.e. two years after the release, a rather nimble device

    2 years ago 0

    good battery(4-5 hours of work), matte screen (does not reflect), availability of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, excellent speed for a netbook, the beech is small and comfortable.

    2 years ago 0

    The screen is of normal quality. Does not glare, check when buying. - 3 usb 2.0 inputs. Two side by side on the right, one on the left. The left one is convenient to use for the modem. - From 7, the starter is fast enough if you remove all this Azusian nonsense from the system. - LONG battery life. Really long. I use it in cafes and other ill-fated places all day and the charge lasts just until the evening.

    2 years ago 0

    1. Battery life 2. Fast, stat. SPSS package in latest version pulls. of course, it freezes on large data arrays, but this is a consequence of a small RAM. Here you already know what you are going for by taking a netbook. 3. nice appearance. I have the design of the Seashell series, blue, it looks great. Light. 4. Especially for the paranoid there is a webcam cover :))
