Accordingly, in this material I can only talk about the device itself, without touching operating system. Although a few words will also have to be said about her. To better understand where the legs of the iPhone 4 grow from, you can also read an article about the iPhone 3Gs, in the fall I wrote a detailed review.

Design and construction

The new iPhone is no match for the iPhone 3Gs, the successor to the plastic tradition of the iPhone 3G. Everything that was said at the presentation by the head of Apple is the absolute truth. And I have something to say about this.

We are accustomed to seeing that steel, glass, special colors are the lot of expensive fashion devices. Some manufacturers, introducing new material, don't care about functionality. Whether Vertu is at least three times the most beautiful, in fact it is a simple phone for calls, and nothing more. I like Vertu, and I don't hide it, they don't joke around here and they make really excellent handsets.

But the iPhone 4 is something special. None of the "functional" devices on the market has such an alloy of image and functionality. You know, you take it out of the box and you understand once again - Apple designers do not eat their bread in vain. Metal edging with antenna holes, a sore point, but beauty requires sacrifice. Glass front and back. Very neat volume buttons, a nice clicky Mute lever, a tight but accurate sleep button. Speakers covered with nets - and every time you look at it, you feel moral satisfaction. While in Russia, the prices for the iPhone 4 are outrageous. But in England or France, the device costs quite comparable to some Nokia N900. What to choose - let everyone decide for himself.

There seems to be nothing left of the old iPhone, but the continuity is felt, starting from the Home button and ending with the characteristic contours of the case. The new representative of the family is heavier, it lies perfectly in the hand - a thing. Naturally, when talking in the current heat, sweat perfectly covers the front panel, but there is an oleophobic coating that allows you to bring the device into a divine form in a second.

Dimensions are 115.2x58.6x9.3 mm, weight 137 grams. With a bumper, the dimensions increase slightly. By the way, let's talk about this accessory. I got a black bumper, as you can see, the buttons are made in the same way as on the device itself. Plastic sides, inside silicone substrate. The holes line up with those on the phone, the volume doesn't change, and the Mute is easily accessible, although it does take some getting used to the new location and size at first. In the photographs, the bumpers look more beautiful than in life, but given their unexpected main task (to prevent the device from losing signal) - it is quite acceptable. And the perception of the device does not affect much. It seemed to me that the accessory does not sit on the case like a glove, there is a slight play on the side parts.

Display

The so-called Retina-display, resolution 960x640 pixels, diagonal 3.5 inches. If Super AMOLED takes brightness, then the "retina" captivates with some composure. It looks like the picture is drawn. Viewing angles are incredible. As is saturation. Naturally, the new display not only looks better, but also expands the functionality to some extent. Browsing sites, working with mail, YouTube has become more convenient, and it suits perfectly for videos. As in all previous iPhones, working with the touch screen is intuitive, multitouch works quickly and accurately, I didn’t notice any yellow spots on this sample - it’s kind of like another well-known “bug” of the iPhone 4. Some glue didn’t dry there then.

Yes, the display behaves well in the sun, it fades a little, but the information is readable.

Performance

I compared iPhone work 4 with iPhone 3Gs very in a simple way- launching different applications. Here is the result:

  • YouTube, devices launch the app equally quickly, but videos load a second (and sometimes more) faster on iPhone 4
  • AppStore, the same picture, processing uploaded data is faster by a second or two on iPhone 4
  • GoogleMaps, here is another story, loading takes much longer on iPhone 4
  • Guerilla Bob game, iPhone 4 runs it twice as fast
  • Mail, I downloaded an email with an attachment (PDF) for testing, the download times are the same

Indeed, the iPhone 4 seems slightly faster than the iPhone 3Gs, but it's not as much of a gap as there was between 3Gs and plain 3G. In any case, the novelty is productive enough for both games and simple tasks. For example, the keyboard and contacts open really instantly, and the search for the desired subscriber is just as fast.

Speaker and sound

Still, first impressions are deceptive. The new device is not to say that it is much louder than the iPhone 3Gs. Some melodies, especially preset ones (such as my favorite "cricket"), are heard even in hell. But in general, it's not about volume, there is a stereo effect. Like the display, the sound has become richer.

I tried to check the sound quality in the headphones, I used an Apple headset that was not included in the kit. Included, by the way, is an old woman from the past, a bit uncomfortable, but there is a remote control and volume buttons. Suitable for the countryside. So, WARNING - iPhone 4 is much louder than 3Gs! About fifteen to twenty percent. It's hard to listen at maximum values, the ears curl up. Yes, and the sound quality seemed much better to me, I didn’t play with equalizers, but the detailing came from somewhere. No, it's not an audiophile player, but it's not the age-old iPod either. Better, louder, louder.

micro SIM

I must report to you that you can already find micro SIM cards from some operators, but I solved the problem radically and ended up spending a couple of fun hours. The trouble came from where it was not expected. Previously, I was not involved in the manufacture of such cards, so I want to tell you in advance - stock up on unnecessary "sim cards" or ask to cut out a seller's card (or look for ready-made solutions on sale).

You need a regular SIM card, scissors, a ruler, and a scratch paper to adjust the size. Please note that the card must be placed in the slot with the contacts down and the corner cut off on the same side as the large card. Your task is simple: cut the contacts in such a way that only they are visible in the gap of the slot and the amount of plastic to the sides is the same.

After training on two cards, I managed to achieve the correct result.

And you need all this to activate the device. ALWAYS check if a PIN code is set on the card, if it is activated, this is important. In principle, if you buy an adapter for "microsim", then later you can use it with devices that have a regular slot, this accessory costs a penny and is still popular. For now - because soon, I hope, microSIM will be sold on every corner.

After iPhone activation 4 need to connect to a computer with installed program iTunes, select Apple ID, set as new iPhone or restore from backup. I set up as new, when using MobileMe, all contacts, Accounts Email, bookmarks and more are automatically synchronized, very convenient.

I will immediately say that my sample was brought from England, it can work with any SIM card. The same devices (“sim-free”) can be bought in France. True, it is rather difficult to do this now, there is a shortage - in Russia there are also many fans of Apple and the iPhone 4 in particular.

Working hours

You can safely keep silent about the declared figures, since everyone uses the device very differently. After the purchase, one of the owners charged the phone and walked with it, constantly doing something, for about a day.

I think it makes sense to be a little like the iPhone 4, at least a week, and then update this information. I suppose that the operating time of the device will pleasantly surprise me, there are suspicions that in a more or less calm mode it can last a couple of days. It's just that with 3Gs you can almost see for yourself how the green bar of the charge indicator decreases before your eyes. On the iPhone 4, you don't need to keep an eye on it.

Camera

A five-megapixel camera, there is a digital zoom (unnecessary if you don't want to spoil the shots), focusing on the area where you literally poked your finger. I invite you to check out the photo for yourself. I shot quickly, I really lack stabilization - it's not good as expected. Although when viewed on the device, the frames look very good. The video is better, but you should not expect anything special - you can download and watch the video yourself.

Bottom line - the camera here is far from the best.

conclusions

You may ask, why so little? The answer is at the very beginning of the material, much has already been said about it in advance. Yes, and I want to stretch the pleasure and treat myself and you with a detailed story about the operation of the iPhone 4 for some time. What did you like. What did not like. How is it in general, and all that.

On the this moment in Russia, the market is slowly saturated with free from binding to iPhone operator 4, prices from 95 to 110 thousand rubles, there will be a fall, but then there will be a new rise. For in England and France they cannot cope with the influx of Russian tourists. A bumper on Gorbushka costs from five to ten thousand.

Do I need to buy iPhone 4 in Russia now? Unless one of your friends is flying to Europe and is ready to provide you with such a service. If you want to have an apparatus right here and now, like the head of our country, go ahead, prepare coins.

By the way, the PR was great. Happiness for those who trade in "gray" goods.

But let's get back to reality from a hundred thousand for an iPhone. Sales in our country may begin in the fall. There may even be subsidies from some operator. The price, quite possibly, will be similar to the "price" of the current 3Gs. Thirty-five thousand for the 32GB variant. In my opinion, even such a price would still be quite nothing. What I liked about iPhone 4:

  • Design, materials, build, feel in the hand - beyond praise
  • Good display
  • The device is fast, just have time to “tap” on the display
  • Good quality sound
  • Great amount programs for all occasions
  • iOS 4 multitasking and more
  • It must be great to use FaceTime, I haven't had a chance to try it yet
  • Long range Wi-Fi, 802.11n support
  • Thanks to the gyroscope, the control in many games has simply changed. For the better. I specifically did not focus on this in the review, I did not notice any particular difference with existing games.

This is perhaps the main one. Now for the cons:

  • I did not feel a breakthrough regarding the camera, it's great to look at the pictures on the device's display. Video is the same situation. But definitely better than before.
  • Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR, file transfer profiles still not supported
  • There is no built-in software for working with documents, they could have given free iWork
  • The light sensor sometimes does not work quite correctly
  • For many, the minus is the closeness of the device, the lack of support for common audio and video formats. With audio, okay, let it be, but there is an excellent display and processor. Well, why not give users the opportunity to turn their “avishki” without conversion. No, great again - torrents, iPhone 4 video search, let's go. Tired
  • Kutsaya headset included. It is clear that metal and glass are worth something, and you need to make money on accessories. But after all, complete "tablets" are terribly inconvenient!

Overall, the iPhone 4 doesn't leave a "we've tried this before, it's great again, it's already boring" flavor. Plastic is not. Brakes - no. It costs more than acceptable in other countries. You can’t even talk about feelings: those who feel the world with their hands will fall in love with the body, speed will cause extremely positive emotions for neurasthenics and cocaine addicts (yes, the phone is on “speed”, class), big-eyed people will get a buzz from the display ... And even the smell, even the great smell of Apple's NEW TECHNOLOGY is matched with exceptional taste.

P.S. Wait, after a while I will tell you more about a number of all sorts of moments and features. You just need to walk around with the device for a while.

Every year Apple releases new smartphone and every year the head of the company proudly says something like - this iPhone is the best of all that we have ever done. At the same time, critics of the "apple" giant are very fond of ironically over this statement. Although, it would seem, everything is logical. Progress today is more rapid than ever, and therefore New Year brings a bunch of new features and here's the result - a new smartphone, which is much cooler than last year, and it should obviously go to the crown of the best.

And then - well, what company will say at the presentation of a new product - this, of course, is a good model, but remember, our flagship of 2014 is, of course, cooler! So every manufacturer praises new model, but only the glory of Apple does not give rest to critics. To help critics, there are a lot of reviews on the net comparing "neighboring" iPhone models, and it seems that the difference between them is really not great. And what if you wave through a generation? For example, to make a comparison not iPhone 4S vs iPhone 5, but consider iPhone differences 4 and 5? Curious what will happen? Then read this review!

In terms of design, both the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 can be called a kind of revolution.

The fourth model of the “apple” smartphone was preceded by the iPhone 2G (it is also proudly called the first), iPhone 3 and 3GS. All these three devices were “on the face” similar as two or three drops of water, had the same size displays and the same soapy “silhouettes”. And if it was still possible to distinguish the first iPhone from the next two by the back panel, then the back sides of the 3/3GS were identical. In general, it seemed that Apple found its “golden” design and was not going to deviate from it.

And suddenly - iPhone 4! Something from a completely different "opera"! The only thing that remains the same is the size of the display and the “apple” on the rear panel, while the case itself has become completely different. All-metal and sharp with a solid weight, a stunningly spectacular mirrored back panel (well, let it scratch quickly!) And a surprisingly harmonious silver edging around the perimeter ... One word - handsome! That's why no one seemed to be seriously upset when the iPhone 4S came out the following year in an identical case.

But now the time has come for the iPhone 5, and for all the ideality of the fourth models, everyone understood that it was time to change something. Apple's task was difficult - to come up with a design that would, well, if not eclipse, but proudly stand on a par with the fours. And ... it worked! The iPhone 5, in general, was very reminiscent of its “ancestor” in silhouette, only it stretched out, built up and felt better. The "apple" giant managed to kill two birds with one stone - and retain the former features of the perfect four, and give a worthy answer to the trends of the mobile device market - a larger screen, a thinner case.

Well, one more “highlight” of the five is the new back panel - the mirror surface almost disappeared - only two shiny stripes from the bottom and top reminded of it, the branded “apple” also shone with gloss, the rest of the panel became noble matte.

What is the conclusion? Which is better in terms of design - iPhone 4 or 5? Sorry, but we will leave this question unanswered. Comparison appearance it is always a thankless task, because there are no comrades for the taste and color, and there will definitely be those who disagree. And as part of the iPhone 4 vs iPhone 5 review, the question of which is better generally becomes incredibly difficult, because the design of both the first and second models is revolutionary to some extent, and to some extent "golden". And even loyal fans of the brand still cannot decide who is cooler.

CPU

Well, here the conclusion is that it is better, on the contrary, to make it very simple - the iPhone 4 runs on a single-core A4 processor with a maximum clock speed of 1 GHz, and the "heart" of the iPhone 5 is a dual-core A6, 1.3 GHz.

Well, you say, but this is just a dry language of numbers, what do these differences give the user in reality? And the fact that the five is more productive than the four by about 4 times! The difference in performance is more than noticeable. However, why waste words, just watch this video and everything will become clear! Yes, on primitive tasks, like opening the "Settings" menu, etc. the difference will not be dramatic, but try loading some "heavy" toy and the differences in reactions will become visible to the naked eye!

Memory: operational and built-in

And here is another big leap forward - the iPhone 4 has 512 MB of RAM, while the five has twice as much - 1024 MB. And even though at the time of the release of the iPhone 5, the flagship competitors of “apple” smartphones already boasted 2 GB of RAM, we all know how economical iOS is and how voracious Android is, and therefore it remains to be seen where you will get faster performance - on some Samsung with RAM on 2 gig or iPhone with one gigabyte.

As for the built-in memory, the iPhone 4 was represented by models - 8, 16 and 32 GB, the five - 16, 32, 64 GB.

iOS

Of course, both heroes work on iOS, what doubts there may be, but the important thing is to what extent maximum version iPhone 4 and 5 can be updated. It should be noted that the difference here is global. The maximum possible iOS on the iPhone 4 is 7.1.2, and the iPhone 5 still supports updates, recall the current iOS version— 10.2.1! Just think the smartphone was released in 2012 - that is, almost 5 years ago and still supports current versions system and can still access all the cool new options! Such a long support, by the way, is one of the main advantages of Apple smartphones. Well, what Android device can boast of such a thing?!

Another question - how does the iPhone 5 “pull” the current top ten? Judging by the feedback from users, it’s pretty good, despite the fact that iOS 10 brought a bunch of new features and is currently considered the largest update to the platform!

Camera

Next we have a comparison of cameras, and here again we need to say about the specifics of Apple. The company never puts much emphasis on megapixels. Of course, their number is not and is not, but it will increase, but to a greater extent, the "apple" giant works with software processing algorithms and other modifications. Result? For a long time The iPhone camera holds the title of one of the coolest mobile cameras, in addition, the "apple" smartphone is the most popular "camera" in the world today.

Now imagine, between the cameras of the four and five there are differences not only in processing methods, aperture ratio, maximum possible frame resolution, etc., but also in megapixels! So, believe me, the question of how to distinguish a picture taken on the fifth iPhone from a frame captured by the iPhone 4 will not appear for you, you will immediately understand “xy from xy”.

The parameters of the main camera of the iPhone 4 are as follows: 5 megapixels, aperture f / 2.8, maximum frame resolution 2592 × 1936. Among the cool features (for mobile camera that time) only face detection when shooting movies. By the way, the maximum video resolution is 1280x720.

iPhone 5 demonstrates the following indicators: 8 MP, aperture f / 2.4, maximum frame resolution 3264 × 2448 , video - 1920x1080. Among the cool options are face recognition when shooting photos and videos, image stabilization, panoramic shooting, processing with special filters. And besides, there was no flash in the four, and it appeared in the iPhone 5 - is it worth saying how much the possibilities of night shooting have increased?

Comparison of the front cameras will also be strong in favor of the iPhone 5, this smartphone has a FaceTime camera of 1.2 megapixels, the maximum frame resolution is 1280 × 960, the iPhone 4 has a 0.3 megapixel camera, the maximum resolution is 640x480.

Display

As we said above, the iPhone 5 received a larger diagonal display, it was 4 inches, while the iPhone 4 has a 3.5-inch screen. The difference is not very big, but it was enough for another line of icons to appear in the fifth smartphone, and surfing the net, reading books and watching videos became more comfortable, although not to say that much.

However, despite the fact that the display resolution of the five has increased - 640x1136 (against 640x960 in the iPhone 4), the pixel density has remained the same - 326 ppi, that is, the screen clarity has not changed. However, why change something if 326 ppi is enough for the user not to notice individual pixels. The contrast ratio (800:1) and color depth (24) of the heroes of the review are also the same.

In general, if we compare the displays, iPhone 4 and 5, it is worth saying that they have changed only in size, the quality, with the exception of little things, has remained the same.

autonomy

The stumbling block of modern flagships is autonomy. Well, with a huge screen and impressive performance for a mobile device, it’s impossible to get a smartphone that, with active use, would work for more than a day. Do you understand what we are for? In terms of autonomy, the heroes of our review will not differ much.

However, if you need numbers - here they are: both smartphones will "stretch" up to 10 hours in video playback mode and 40 in audio mode, in WiFi networks the maximum operating time will also be 10 hours, and in 2G / 3G networks - the iPhone 5 will outperform the four in an hour - 8/15 versus 7/14 hours. As for the battery capacities: five - 1440 mAh, four - 1420 mAh.

"Things"

At the beginning of the article, we said that the rapidly developing progress makes it possible to supply flagships with different new cool options every year. Of course, the iPhone 5 works on more advanced wireless protocols, has an improved modem, navigation options, etc. But listing all the changes in this regard would be boring and, moreover, not every reader would understand them. However, according to the main modern technologies, known to everyone, it is worth "running over".

Firstly, the iPhone 5 began to support LTE - that is, 4G networks, the four do not work with them. Secondly, the fifth iPhone has the “great and terrible” Siri, and users of the fourth have to do without a voice assistant. And finally, iPhone 5 can work with copyright Apple technology for data transfer using Wi-Fi and Bluetooth - AirDrop. iPhone 4 owners will have to use the Internet to share files, because the closed iOS allows i-techniques to connect only with Bluetooth via Bluetooth. wireless headsets and other accessories - file sharing is prohibited!

Let's summarize

Well, the comparison has come to an end and, as you can see, the differences between the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 are truly global - they are just two completely different smartphones, both in terms of design and internal “content”. What happens, Apple does not sit idly by, year after year trying to squeeze money out of fans for the same thing? It seems so! And even if, when considering two neighboring models, it always seems that there are not so many changes, but if we take “through one”, the difference is downright surprising!

What is the difference between iPhone 4 and 5? Yes to everyone! Well, except that the autonomy and quality of the display are about the same level. Which iPhone is better, you ask? We think the answer here is also obvious - unless you, of course, are in love with the design of the iPhone 4, the five is much cooler. One support only actual updates eloquently indicates that the iPhone 5 is still too early to write off, and it is quite a modern gadget, at a time when the four are already obsolete, although it is quite nimble for a device released 7 years ago!

The iPhone line of devices has turned the idea of how a modern mobile phone should look like. With each version, the characteristics of the smartphone have increased. The pinnacle of excellence in this line of Apple products today is the iPhone 5.

iPhone 3 vs iPhone 4

Starting with the fourth version, Apple began to install its own processors in iPhones. Prior to this, the company purchased these parts from Samsung. If we talk about the better than 4 iPhone 3 models, then we can briefly answer: “Everyone”. The iPhone 4 processor with a clock frequency of 1000 MHz is significantly superior to the Samsung processor, the frequency of which, by installing it in the iPhone 3GS, was programmatically lowered to 600 MHz. In addition, the amount of RAM has doubled (up to 512 MB), front-camera, battery life has increased, screen resolution has doubled in each direction (up to 640x960 pixels). The only feature that could compete with the iPhone 3S when the iPhone 4 was released was the use of the SIM standard. The four used micro-SIMs, which were then (in 2010) in short supply. Although this problem is not fundamental - the card could simply be cut with scissors.

In 2011, the iPhone 4S was released, which retained the appearance of its predecessor, but acquired more powerful hardware. At the end of 2012, the main competitor of the 4 and 4S models appeared - the iPhone 5. Let's consider how the iPhone 5 better iPhone 4, and what could be worse.

Screen

It has become wider (4 inches versus 3.5) and at the same time thinner, which reduced the thickness of the entire device to 7.6 mm. (and it was 9.3 mm.). At the same time, the increase in the screen led to a logical increase in the length of the device. It has increased by about 8.5 mm. and amounted to 123.8 mm. Some skeptics have said that this size will not allow you to use the new phone model with the same comfort as the old one. Nevertheless, the practice of many users has shown that the increase in screen area did not bring any problems. But now more information is displayed on the screen. In addition, the device began to behave noticeably better in bright sunlight.

Front camera

It first appeared in the iPhone 4. What makes the fifth iPhone great in this regard is that the camera now supports 720p HD recording. In 4 and 4S it was only possible to record in VGA mode.

CPU

If with the release of the 4S model, the number of cores doubled compared to the 4th model and amounted to 2 (A5 processor), then in the iPhone 5 this figure also doubled. The device is now controlled by a 4-core central processing unit A6. Accordingly, the performance increased from device to device. In addition, the GPU (which is part of the main processor chip) has also been upgraded. Its performance in the iPhone 5 has about doubled. This, in turn, increased the number of frames per second that are displayed on the screen during games. Play is now more comfortable.

Operating system

More powerful processor the fifth model runs a more advanced OS (iOS 6). It includes significantly updated all the basic features of the previous iOS 5. In addition, more than two hundred new features have been added that increase not only the convenience of working with the device, but also the reliability of the device. For example, the Siri voice assistant can now launch any application at the user's command and even compose an SMS under dictation.

Sound quality

The latest (fifth) model is equipped with three microphones (versus two that were installed in predecessor smartphones). This allows much more effective suppression of ambient noise, which brings sound transmission to a new level.

SIM card

What's great about the iPhone 4 is that it uses a micro-SIM. As mentioned above, this was some inconvenience when the device was released (such cards were in short supply). Now, such a SIM card can be bought without any problems at any post office. But nano-SIM - a new generation of chips for phones of the fifth model - is still a relative rarity. Moreover, cutting the SIM card, as it was possible during the transition from SIM to micro-SIM, will not work, new generation SIM cards are different.

At the moment, this is the only objective drawback of the fifth model, which, firstly, was not felt by all users, and, secondly, soon (with the advent of a large number of nano-SIMs) will cease to be relevant.

As you can see, the fifth iPhone is not only the latest and most modern, but also much better than its predecessor. However, if we talk about what makes the iPhone 4 good, then we can point to a more convenient and familiar SIM card and a lower price compared to the iPhone 5. Despite the fact that the fourth iPhone loses to the fifth, it is now easier and cheaper to purchase such a phone, and its capabilities and specifications are still at a high level.

Foreword

Many are interested in which model of the iPhone smartphone they should choose. The question comes from both those who use the iPhone and want to get a newer model, and those who have never even held an Apple smartphone in their hands before. How big are the benefits of the iPhone 4S over last year's iPhone 4? If such questions torment you too, then the review below, authored by the journalists of the GSMArena resource, can clarify the situation.

Apple seems to be sticking to its previously chosen strategy for releasing smartphones. The 3GS model has become much improved iPhone version 3G, but externally the devices were identical. The same thing happened with the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. It's a viable strategy, as evidenced by the success of previous iPhone generations. But is the iPhone 4S enough new to make consumers consider buying it? Some were upset to the core when they heard that "iPhone 5 will not be introduced by Apple this year," while others cheered iPhone 4S after learning about voice assistant Siri and completely new stuffing.

Below are the key pros and cons that can make you scream “Yes, it's worth it! I’m taking the iPhone 4S! ”, But they can also push me away from buying a 2011 model.

Reasons to buyiPhone 4S:

2-core processor and 7 times more powerful GPU

8-megapixel camera with improved shooting in poor lighting conditions and more high speed photo and video creation

Full HD (1080p) video recording

Support for two communication standards, GSM and CDMA

New antenna design that solves the problem of poor communication signal reception

Possibility to purchase a model with 64 GB of internal memory

Support for the more advanced Bluetooth 4.0 standard

Reasons to stay withiPhone 4:

Body design remains the same

The display has retained its previous characteristics, including size and resolution

The amount of RAM memory has not changed

Siri is unlikely to be useful for those who live outside the US and do not speak English very well

You can take more photos and record longer videos and avoid issues with Full HD (1080p) video playback

The article below is not an in-depth analysis of all the pros and iPhone cons 4S warns GSMArena, promising to publish a detailed review later. The purpose of the article is to compare the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S and identify the main differences between these smartphones.

The information is useful for those who have an iPhone 4 and who are considering whether to take the iPhone 4S or is it better to wait for the iPhone 5. However, it will also help those who are going to buy their first iPhone (take the iPhone 4, which is cheaper, or choose the iPhone 4S?).

Undoubtedly, for the most part, the iPhone 4S smartphone will be purchased by owners of other iPhone models. Therefore, a simple review is unlikely to help them. It's better to highlight the differences between the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S than just list the features of the newer model, says GSMArena.

iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S look like twins until you take a closer look

Let's start with the hardware. At first glance - almost unchanged. But they are. We will also talk about Siri, smartphone performance and an updated camera.

What has changed in the hardware?

Apple has chosen for the new model exactly the same display as the previous generation iPhone. And it is, it is worth noting, one of the best on the market. The only thing Apple could improve is the display size. Many hoped for this, but, as it turned out, in vain.

On the other hand, this has its pluses. User interface and applications look familiar, the smartphone is just as easy to fit in your hand and hides in your pockets, and it is compatible with most accessories designed for iPhone 4.

Same look, same feel

However, there is one accessory that iPhone owners The 4S won't be needed - a case that Apple calls a "bumper". This is a regular case, and of course you can use it, but only for reasons of protecting the screen or giving the smartphone a more interesting look. There is no real need for it. Apple has learned its lesson from the problem with the iPhone 4 antenna. Let the iPhone 4S look like a twin brother, and it has not one, but two antennas that solve the problem with poor signal reception.

Note that this is not a GSM antenna or a CDMA antenna. Yes, iPhone 4S supports both standards mobile communications, but both of its antennas receive both GSM and CDMA signals.

Barely noticeable black stripes give out new design antennas

The smart smartphone automatically switches between GSM modes and CDMA (even during a call), and if one of the antennas is blocked, the second one immediately takes over. No matter how you hold the device, the signal reception will be consistently good.

The specific design of the antennas will improve signal reception in those areas where problems may arise with it. True, it is not clear whether this will work when the user does not hold the smartphone in his hands, but so far there have been no complaints about this aspect.

The iPhone 4S will still not be able to support some accessories, due to a slightly different location of the mute button. But if you used a CDMA-smartphone iPhone 4S, which came in the winter at the disposal of the American mobile operator Verizon, then the bumper cases will most likely fit like a glove on the new model.

The culprit of incompatibility with some covers * Multimedia connectors remained unchanged

Apple has also updated the hardware of the smartphone. The Apple A5 chipset was installed on the iPhone 4S, consisting of a 2-core processor and graphics core PowerVR SGX543MP2, offering a 7x improvement in the graphics capabilities of the machine.

In fact, exactly the same chipset is hidden inside the iPad 2. The issue of smartphone performance will be discussed later.

The only thing that hasn't changed in the iPhone 4S is the amount of RAM. It is still at 512 MB. However, iOS works excellently even with this volume, so no special problems are foreseen. Thanks to the 2-core processor, applications run noticeably faster, although there is no mind-boggling increase in speed.

The iPhone 4S has almost the same battery as its predecessor. The difference is minimal and unlikely to affect anything. GSMArena journalists warn that they do not yet have a complete picture of the battery's capabilities, since they did not have time to conduct a full test.

The iPhone 4S camera has a wider lens aperture, f/2.4, which allows it to let in more light. Paired with a new improved sensor design, this will allow you to create better images in low light. The camera, we recall, is 8-megapixel. Its capabilities will be discussed in more detail later.

The new camera lets more light through to the sensor, resulting in better image quality.

And, finally, two more important changes: iPhone 4S is available from the very first day in a white case and in a version with 64 GB of internal memory.

Apple will never seem to agree to having memory cards sneak into its smartphones. However, 64 GB is the maximum that most can offer. modern phones, even when using expensive 64 GB microSDXC memory cards, and they are really expensive.

PO: hi,Siri!

You've probably heard the rave reviews about digital assistant Siri that lives on the iPhone 4S. Perhaps you even managed to personally try it in action. Siri listens to your questions and answers them in her own voice.

Siri surprises with the flexibility of "thinking". You can make specific information requests (What's the weather like in Boston now? Whose stocks are up today?) and assign him some tasks. For example, you can ask Siri to set an alarm, add a note to your calendar, compose a text message, or create a new reminder.

Siri is flexible

Thanks to the efforts of Apple, Siri even got its own, so to speak, character. If you decide to ask an assistant some stupid question (and you will definitely ask him a stupid question, at least just to laugh), then Siri can give you a smart and funny answer. Of course, there is no sense in such a conversation when the user is just joking with Siri. Nevertheless, there is a pleasant feeling that you are talking with some kind of smart creature, and not with a soulless system that simply gives out prepared template answers.

It is worth noting that outside the US, of course, Siri will be of little use, since the system will not be able to tell you where the nearest attractions or popular establishments are. Again, Siri understands only a few languages so far, and if it seems to you that English at the high school level is enough for you to communicate with an assistant, then GSMArena is in a hurry to upset you: Siri is very bad at managing accents.

Siri is designed for the iPhone 4S and is not yet supported by the iPhone 4. Apple, however, stressed that Siri is still in "beta development." Who knows, maybe the final version will be available on the iPhone 4. But this is just pure speculation, and even if such a chance really exists, then the owners of the previous generation model will, of course, have to wait.

If you are unable to speak with voice assistant, it is worth paying attention to alternatives to Siri. There is, for example, the Vlingo application. Its functionality is similar to Siri, and it works smoothly on iPhone 4 models. Vlingo and Siri analogues are not, of course, funny, flexible and accurate, but you can still try.

Due to the 2-core processor and the Apple A5 chipset, the smartphone is somewhat faster, but not as much as Apple trumpeted during its official announcement. Often, the iPhone 4 is not inferior in speed to its successor, walking on a par with it.

You can watch a video that compares app launch speeds on iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.

Naturally, Apple offered other software improvements besides Siri, as well as new services, including iCloud, which will become available with iOS 5. But most of these services, however, are compatible not only with the iPhone 4S, notes GSMArena.

Camera:iPhone 4 versusiPhone 4S

iPhone 4S received new camera with a higher resolution sensor and higher light sensitivity and a lens that allows more light to pass through. This should ensure that better photos and videos are produced in both good and questionable lighting conditions.

And a couple more shots showing how well smartphone cameras do in low light.

iPhone 4S*iPhone 4 * Enlarged frame

For a clearer comparison, GSMArena journalists made several identical photos on the cameras of both iPhone models. The pictures in the left column are taken with an iPhone 4S, those in the right column are taken with an iPhone. The middle column shows what the iPhone 4 would look like if it had an 8MP camera.

Comparative photos taken withiPhone 4 andiPhone 4S

If you look closely at these photos, you will notice that when shooting on the iPhone 4S camera, there is still less noise, despite its higher resolution (usually, the higher the resolution, the more noise). The shots seem sharper, more details are visible, plus objects and objects that are in the shadows are better seen. In addition, the iPhone 4's camera distorts colors somewhat, while the iPhone 4S is more accurate in rendering tones and colors.

Video recording: from 720p toFullHD

iPhone 4S allows you to record video in Full HD resolution, while iPhone 4 is not able to offer anything more than just HD. If you are wondering what is the real difference between HD and Full HD video, then take a look at the photos below.

Snapshots from videos madeiPhone 4S andiPhone 4

Obviously, the iPhone 4's camera doesn't show all the details in the brightest part of the video, while the iPhone 4S did it. The new smartphone has better camera dynamic range.

Again, there is a noticeable difference in noise. Video from iPhone 4S has less noise and more realistic colors (iPhone 4 artificially increases saturation).

The middle shot (the trio above) shows what video would look like on an iPhone 4 if the smartphone could record in Full HD. In the iPhone 4S footage, individual leaves can be seen on the trees, and the trellis appears more distinct.

In GSMArena filmed video simultaneously on iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. Compare the difference in quality.

GSMArena notes that the iPhone 4S camera is many times faster than the iPhone 4. The camera is ready to use almost immediately, no delays are observed. And she doesn't think too long before taking the next shot. So users will take more photos without fear of missing the moment while the camera is set up and ready for the next shot.

The camera also automatically finds the optimal focus and exposure and adheres to these settings throughout the shooting. However, this is a “feature” of the iOS 5 platform, and not just the iPhone 4S smartphone.

Thanks to the fast processor, real-time image stabilization is also possible. You can take a look at the video that compares image stabilization on iPhone cameras 4 and iPhone 4S.

Both videos were filmed under identical conditions, so each one "shaked" the same way. However, with the real-time stabilization function, the final video turned out to be really many times better. It is worth noting that, in principle, all this does not exclude the appearance of slight geometric distortions.

If you move from dark areas to brighter areas during shooting, or if some object takes up almost the entire frame and then quickly leaves it, then no major changes will occur with focus and exposure.

Benchmarking: is it reallyiPhone 4S is twice as fast?

The answer to this question is: most often, yes. No other smartphone can match, for example, the iPhone 4S in terms of browser speed. Perhaps two or three tablets will handle this, but that's all. The gap is also noticeable in 3D games - even the flagship Android smartphones are clearly inferior.

According to the Geekbench test, which measures processor speed, the iPhone 4S is indeed faster than the iPhone 4. And in multithreaded tests, the 4S actually performs twice as fast.

The iPad 2, which uses the same chipset, performed better than the iPhone 4S due to its higher clock speed.

To summarize, the test results are as follows: in single-threaded tests, the iPhone 4S has a minimal advantage over the iPhone 4, but in multi-threaded tests it is still closer to the iPad 2.

The best score is the highest

Single-threaded and multi-threaded tests

Let's move on to 3D tests. The GLBenchmark test can be run on iOS and Android, so it's a great comparison. All devices are in equal conditions.

Showed himself best iPad tablet 2, but if you compare the iPhone 4S not with tablets, but with smartphones, then it is frighteningly fast. On the samsung galaxy The S II has one of the most powerful GPUs on any Android device, but it's still behind the 4S. As for the iPhone 4, it is generally far away. Apple promised that the graphics processor of the iPhone 4S smartphone will be 7 times faster than that of its predecessor.

Frames per second; the higher the better

The iPhone 4S is also leading the browser wars. In the SunSpider (JavaScript) and BrowserMark (JavaScript + HTML) tests, it is the undisputed leader. Android-smartphones with 2-core processors could not catch up with him. Looks like Apple has improved a lot. software, because 2-nuclear iPhone chips 4S and Android models can hardly be so radically different.

Higher is better

Lower is better

ChangeiPhone 4 oniPhone 4S or not: advice fromGSM Arena

If your contractual obligation for iPhone use 4 or you simply find it necessary to always use the latest and best devices Apple, then the question of the expediency of buying an iPhone 4S is especially acute for you.

If you have an iPhone 3GS (or an earlier version of the iPhone) or have never bought an iPhone, GSMArena says the iPhone 4S should, of course, be taken. The maximum that you can save on buying an iPhone 4 is one hundred dollars.

What if you have an iPhone 4 in your pocket? If you use your smartphone's camera very often, then GSMArena advises you to buy an iPhone 4S. But it is worth remembering that photos and videos created by the camera of the new model will take up twice as much space in the memory of the device. You will not be able to select a lower resolution. Again, many PC devices won't be able to handle Full HD, so do your due diligence before buying an iPhone 4S.

Siri is a very tempting option on the iPhone 4S. And this system works just fine. But if you live outside the US, then it may not be very useful for two reasons. Firstly, she knows only American institutions, and therefore will not be able to tell you, for example, good store in Paris. Secondly, Siri understands only a few languages and has difficulty if you speak with an accent. So your English (if you are not a native speaker, of course) should be just perfect. However, for US residents, Siri will make communicating with iPhone more fun and convenient. If they are not shy about talking out loud to the phone, of course.

Another point in support of the iPhone 4S: if your iPhone 4 suffers from problems with poor signal reception, then buy a new model. Its unique antenna will allow you to forget about such difficulties.

GSMArena's verdict is this: for US residents, buying an iPhone 4S is really good decision. Everyone else is free to do as they please. But if the funds allow, then it is better to get yourself an iPhone 4S.
