Another test subject, Samsung GT-I9100, had to be flashed to the latest official firmware. Unfortunately, the last official for this device based on Android 4.1.2, for the most part, the firmware is excellent, except that the manufacturer loves to cram branded "trash" into them. It is not so difficult to flash the official firmware, you just need:

  1. Charge the device to capacity, that is, 100%, do not neglect the charge, in the firmware mode it eats the charge in buckets;
  2. Install drivers for Samsung "s, they are in Kies, but they are also available separately;
  3. You will need an Odin flasher;
  4. Well, the firmware itself;

After installing the drivers, turn off the phone, hold down the volume button, the central button is OK and turn it on, after receiving a warning, press up, the phone goes into download mode. You should see this picture

For single file firmware

The ID:COM item should show 0: in my case 0: yours may be different. The Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time checkboxes should be checked, then with the PDA button we select our single-file firmware. Click Start. At the end of the process above 0: the inscription on a green background PASS! in the All threads completed log. Which indicates the completion of the firmware, your device will reboot and turn on, while the data in the phone will remain.

This method is only recommended for updating official version firmware!!! Do not use single-file firmware for downgrading or upgrading, also not recommended for migrating from custom firmware to stock (official) firmware

For three-file firmware

Press the PDA button, select the CODE_XXXX file, then Phone select MODEM_XXXX, CSC select the CSC_XXXX file, (where XXXX is the phone model in this case I9100) then click Start

The flagship smartphones of the S series, released annually by Samsung, are characterized not only by a high level of specifications but also very long service life. Below we will talk about Samsung firmware Galaxy S 2 GT-I9100 is a phone that is considered an "old man" by the standards of the world of Android devices, but at the same time continues to perform its functions at a decent level.

Of course, the effective operation of any Android device is possible only if its software part is in a normal state. If with operating system problems are observed, in most situations the firmware will help, which in the case of samsung galaxy S2 (SGS 2) can be done in several ways. Despite the fact that the methodology for reinstalling Android on Galaxy models S 2 has been used many times in practice, and strict adherence to the instructions below practically guarantees the smooth flow of processes and their positive result, Do not forget:

The user who operates the smartphone is solely responsible for possible damage device as a result of incorrect actions, software failures and other force majeure circumstances that may arise in the process of implementing the recommendations below!

The successful completion of almost any work is largely determined by the correct preparation of the object for operations, as well as the tools that may be needed. With regard to the firmware of Android devices, this statement is also true. In order to quickly and easily reinstall the OS and get the desired result (Android type / version) on the Samsung GT-I9100, it is highly recommended to carry out the following preparatory procedures.

Drivers and operating modes

For the computer and utilities to interact with the internal memory of Android devices, it is necessary that the PC operating system be equipped with drivers that allow the Windows OS to "see" a smartphone that is in specialized modes and connected to the computer's USB port.

Download the app installer from the official web page technical support GT-I9100 models in the link below. Choose a version to download 2.6.4.16113.3 .

Install the tool following the instructions of the installer. After Kies is installed, all the necessary drivers will appear in Windows to manipulate the phone using a PC.

Among other things, the Kies program can be used for many operations with the GT-I9100, such as saving data from the phone.

If for some reason there is no desire or opportunity to install Kies, you can use the driver package, which is distributed separately. Download link for component installer "SAMSUNG_USB_Driver_for_Mobile_Phones.exe" for the model in question:

Switching modes

In order to seriously interfere with the internal memory of an Android device where OS components are installed, it is often necessary to switch the device to special service states. For Samsung GT-I9100, this is the recovery environment (recovery) and software download mode ( Download, "One mode"). In order not to return to this issue in the future, we will figure out how to start the device in the indicated modes at the preparation stage.

Return to the factory state, update the official software

All methods for reinstalling the OS on the Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-I9100, suggested below in this material, except for cases where a crashed Android recovery is required, assume that the device is initially running the official system of the latest version released by the manufacturer - 4.1.2 !

Restoring the settings to the factory settings and clearing the device’s memory of the information contained in it allows you to get rid of the software “garbage” accumulated during the operation of the SGS 2, the effects of viruses, “brakes” and system freezes, etc. user information, the device is often much more efficient in terms of performance levels in future use.

In a word, before manipulating the SGS 2 system software, follow the procedure to restore the device to the factory state and update the official OS to latest version. For many users of the model in question, by the way, following the instructions below is enough to get the expected result - a smartphone in the “out of the box” state in terms of the software part and running the latest version of the official Android.

  1. In any way, copy important information from the device to a safe place (some methods of archiving information are described below in the article), fully charge its battery and start the device in recovery environment mode.

  2. Select in recovery "wipe data/factory reset", then confirm the need to erase the information - point "Yes...". Wait for the cleaning procedure to complete - a notification appears on the screen "Data wipe complete".

  3. Reboot your phone by selecting the option in the recovery environment "reboot system now", wait for the Android welcome screen to appear and determine the main settings of the operating system.

  4. Make sure the latest version of the official system (4.1.2) is installed. Follow the path "Settings" - "Phone Details"(at the very bottom of the list of options) - "Android Version".

  5. If for some reason Android has not been updated before and the installed build number is below 4.1.2, update it. It's very easy to do this:
    • Connect the machine to WiFi networks and follow the path: "Settings" - "Phone Details" - "Software Update".

    • Click "Update", then confirm reading the Samsung system software terms of use. Next, the automatic download of the update will begin, wait for the components to download.

    • After a notification appears that the update package has finished downloading, make sure that the battery of the device has a sufficient battery level (more than 50%) and press "Install". Wait a bit, the smartphone will automatically reboot and the installation of the updated OS components will begin, which can be monitored using the filling progress bar.

    • Upon completion of the installation of the updated Android, the device will automatically reboot again, and upon completion of the initialization of the components, all applications will be optimized,

and you will get the latest version of the OS from the manufacturer SGS 2.

It may be necessary to repeat the update procedure several times until a situation occurs when, when selecting the item, "Update" along the way "Settings""About device", a notification will appear « Latest updates already installed".

Root rights

Superuser privileges obtained on the GT-I9100 smartphone allow you to perform a lot of actions with system software that are not documented by the manufacturer. In particular, a rooted user can clear official android from pre-installed system applications that cannot be removed by standard methods, thus freeing up space in the device’s memory and speeding up its work.

In the aspect of changing the system software, root rights are important primarily because, only by using them, you can make a full-fledged backup before seriously interfering with the system software of the device. There are several ways to get Superuser rights. For example, it is effective for the model to use the KingRoot application and instructions from the article:

Without using a computer, getting root rights on the S 2 model from Samsung is also possible. To do this, you can refer to the functionality of the Framaroot program, following the recommendations from the material available on our website:

An equally effective method of obtaining Superuser privileges is to install a specialized zip package. "CF Root" using the recovery environment that developers equip their devices with.

Backup, backup IMEI

Obtaining a backup copy of the information contained in a smartphone before interfering with its software is an important step, because the data stored in smartphones is often very valuable for their owners. Saving user information, apps, and more from the Galaxy S 2 can be done in a variety of ways.

Archiving user information

In addition to tools from third-party developers designed for archiving information and listed in the material at the link above, users of this model who prefer official manipulation tools and do not plan to switch to custom firmware can use the aforementioned Kies software to back up data.

In this option, act by analogy with other Samsung devices that have been repeatedly reviewed in articles on our resource. For example:

EFS area backup

Highly important action, which must be done before interfering with system partitions samsung memory S2, is to save the IMEI backup. The loss of this identifier during the reinstallation of Android is not such a rare case, which leads to inoperability mobile network. Restoring IMEI without a backup is quite difficult.

The identifier itself and other settings of the radio module are stored in the device's system memory area, called "EFS". The dump of this section is essentially an IMEI backup. Consider simplest way protect the device from unpleasant consequences.

The phone must have microSD card any size!

Thus on removable storage a backup copy of the critical system area of the SGS 2 memory will be saved. You can optionally copy the received to a safe storage location, for example, to a PC disk.

Firmware

In most cases, following the above preparations is enough to safely and quickly install the desired version of Android in the Samsung GT-I9100. The following describes the most effective methods for carrying out operations on the model in question, which allow you to completely reinstall the official system, restore the device from the “brick” state, and even give the phone a “second life” by equipping it with a modified OS from third-party developers.

Method 1: One

Regardless of the state of the Samsung GT-I9100 system software, reinstalling the official assembly of the phone's operating system in most cases can be done using the Odin application. This tool, among other things, is most effective when "scratching" the device, that is, in the situation when the smartphone does not boot into Android and resetting through recovery does not help.

Single file firmware

The simplest and safest operation performed through Odin is the installation of the so-called single-file firmware. By following the instructions below, the user gets the opportunity to install in the phone in question the official system of the latest version released by the manufacturer - Android 4.1.2 for the region "Russia".

  1. Download the latest version of Odin from the link from the application review article on our resource, unpack the resulting archive into a separate folder and run the application.

  2. Switch S2 to mode Download and connect it with a cable to the USB port of the PC. Wait until the device is detected in the One program, that is, make sure that the port number is displayed in the first field ID:COM.

  3. Click on the app button "AP", which will open the Explorer window in which you need to specify the path to the image "I9100XWLSE_I9100OXELS6_I9100XXLS8_HOME.tar.md5" downloaded from the link above. With the package selected, click "Open".

  4. Everything is ready for transfer system components into the apparatus. Click Start.

  5. Wait for the partition overwriting to complete. The names of the areas that are currently being manipulated are displayed in the upper left area of the Odin window. The process can also be controlled by watching the appearing inscriptions in the log field.

  6. When the process of overwriting system areas is completed, notifications will appear in the One window: "PASS" top left and "All threads completed" in the log field.

This completes the reinstallation of Android, the device will reboot into the operating system automatically.

Service firmware

In the case when SGS 2 does not show signs of life, does not start, reboots and the above operation, which involves installing a single-file firmware, does not bring a positive effect, it is necessary to flash through One specialized package consisting of three files, and in critical situations, carry out additional repartitioning internal memory using a .pit file.

In addition to restoring the software part, following the recommendations described below is the most effective way to return the device to the factory state after installing custom solutions, modified recovery, etc. You can download the archive with the files used in the example below from the link:

  1. Unpack the archive containing the three firmware images and the PIT file into a separate directory.

  2. Launch Odin and connect the device to the PC, which is switched to the Download.

  3. By clicking on the component download buttons in turn, add files to the program by specifying the path to them in the Explorer window:

Field "BL" remains blank, but the result should be a picture as in the screenshot:

  4. When making the first attempt to flash the phone with a service package, we skip this paragraph!

Repartition only if the installation of the three-file package does not work!

  5. To start overwriting areas of the internal data storage of the Samsung GT-I9100, click Start.

  6. Wait for the process of overwriting all partitions of the machine's drive to complete.

  7. At the end of the transfer of files to the device, the latter will automatically reboot, and in the Odin window, an inscription confirming the effectiveness of the operation will appear "PASS".

  8. Wait until the welcome screen appears with the option to select a language (the first launch after reinstalling the operating system will take longer than usual - approximately 5-10 minutes).

  9. Carry out the basic settings.

You can use a smartphone running the official Android assembly!

Method 2: Mobile Odin

For those users who prefer to manipulate their Samsung Android devices without using a PC, there is a wonderful tool - Mobile Odin. The application allows you to perform a large number of different actions with the Samsung Galaxy ES 2 software - install official single-file and multi-file packages, overwrite kernels and recovery, clean up the phone from accumulated data, etc.

To use Mobile One effectively, the device must boot into Android and be equipped with Superuser privileges!

Single file firmware

Description of the opportunities that Mobile Odin provides for owners of the Samsung GT-I9100, let's start with installing a single-file firmware - the simplest method to reinstall Android on the device in question.

  1. Download the package with the system image for the model (from the link above - assembly 4.1.2, other versions can be searched on the Internet) and place it on the removable drive of the device.

  2. Install Mobile Odin from Google Play Store.

  3. Run the tool and grant it root rights. Allow download additional components necessary for the full functioning of the tool - the button Download in the request that appears.

  6. Mobile One will carry out further manipulations automatically - the smartphone will reboot twice, and as a result, the reinstalled Android will be launched.

  7. Additionally. After completing the above steps, you can overwrite the CSC section - an image file containing the name of this area in the name carries information about the regional binding of the firmware. The action is performed in the same way as installing a single-file Android package, only you can do without clearing partitions and after selecting the option "Open File..." in Mobile Odin, you must specify the path to the file with the name "CSC...".

Method 3: Philz Touch Recovery

Owners of, frankly, obsolete Android smartphones are most interested in custom firmware. For the Samsung S2 GT-I9100, just a huge number of solutions have been created that make it possible to get new android versions. Separate software products that deserve attention and are generally suitable for everyday use on the model discussed below in the article.

Most of the unofficial OS builds for the device in question are installed using a modified (custom) recovery. Consider the process of equipping a smartphone with a custom OS using Philz Touch Recovery- an improved version of CWM Recovery.

Equipping the PhilzTouch Recovery Device

Before using the described tool for flashing SGS 2, the modified recovery must be installed on the phone. The easiest way to perform this action is to install a specialized zip package using the factory recovery environment.

Installing modified recovery images found on the Internet without a custom kernel can damage the device during further use of the recovery environment!

Installing custom based on Android 4.4

Custom OS, which is based on Android KitKat, is one of the best solutions for the device in question in terms of features/performance ratio. For example, the popular MIUI Android shell is available for installation on the Samsung GT-I9100 and is successfully operated by many device owners. There are many variants of this software product, ported for the model by various development teams and enthusiastic users.

As an example, let's install the MIUI assembly based on Android 4.4 into the phone, created by the Miui Russia team. You can download the package with the proposed OS for installation through the extended recovery environment at the link:

  1. Place the custom skin zip file on your SGS 2 memory stick and reboot into PhilzTouch recovery.

Custom installation based on Android 5.1

The transition from the fourth version of Android to newer OS variants is carried out by a slightly different method than that described above, and for a positive result, additional manipulations with the layout of the internal memory of the device and the system core will be required.

Following the instructions below, you can install the custom CyanogenMOD 12.1 solution. For other Lollipop-based shells, the system kernels used and the procedure may differ!

Step 1: Repartition the SGS 2 Memory

Since in Android, starting from version 5, the Dalvik application runtime was replaced by ART, installing new OS versions in old devices very often requires redistribution of system memory partitions (repartitioning). To perform the operation on Samsung Galaxy ES 2, you need to reflash the device through Odin using a specialized three-file package with the OS and a modified PIT file.

Before you start repartitioning, remove the memory card from your smartphone!

  1. Download a three-file firmware with integrated root rights from the link above, unzip the resulting file into a separate directory.

  2. Follow the first three steps of the installation instructions service firmware from description "Method 1: Odin" above in this article. To load into the program, use the files from the directory "ROOT_I9100XWLSE+PIT4GB" with a modified three-file system!

  3. Open a tab "Pit", click "OK" in the risk warning window.

Click "PIT" and in Explorer, specify the path to the file "I91001GB_4GB.pit", located in the folder with the three-file modified package.

  4. Go to the tab Options in Odin and check if the checkbox is checked "Repartition". Next click Start and wait for the re-partitioning to finish, as well as the installation of the official OS with integrated root rights.

  5. If, at the end of the processes by the program, the smartphone automatically reboots into factory recovery, disconnect the device from the PC, select the item in the recovery environment "wipe data/factory reset", confirm the need for formatting by selecting "Yes...", wait for the cleaning procedure to complete and reboot the device by selecting in the recovery "reboot system now".

  6. After downloading Android and specifying the initial parameters, pull down the notification curtain and tap on the item there Blank USB storage. Next click "Format" in the request box.

If the above notice is missing, go to "Settings""Memory" and tap "Format USB Drive", press the button to start cleaning and wait for it to finish.

Upon completion of the procedure for cleaning the internal drive, the re-partitioning of the SGS 2 memory will be completed. You can make sure that the partition volumes have been redistributed successfully by going to the following path on your smartphone: "Settings" - "Memory". The picture must match the screenshot:

Step 2: Installing CyanogenMod 12.1

After the inner samsung drive GT-I9100 re-partitioned for installation into it modified firmware Based on Android 5.1, there are no barriers. You will need four zip files: two of them contain custom kernels and recovery images, the third contains a package for equipping Android Google services, and, finally, the CyanogenMod 12.1 shell itself of the latest version for the device in question. Everything you need is packaged in an archive that can be downloaded from the link:

  1. Unzip the package downloaded from the link above and copy the resulting directory containing four zip files to the MicroSD card installed in the SGS 2.

as described above in section “Equipment of the PhilzTouch Recovery Device” of this article.

  3. Reboot Samsung ES 2 into the modified PhilzTouch Recovery environment and follow the steps from the instructions "Installing custom based on Android 4.4.4" above in the article. That is, create a backup and format the partitions.

  4. Without rebooting PhilzTouch Recovery after cleaning (this is important!), install the zip package "CWM_i9100_6.0.5.1.zip". The path is the following:
  5. From the main screen of PhilzTouch Recovery, open "Advanced", select the first function in the list - "Reboot Recovery" and then tap "Yes - Root device"

  6. As a result of the previous step, the smartphone will reboot into CWM Recovery 6.0.5.1.

Working in this environment is very simple - moving through the menu items is done using swipes up and down, selecting an option is swiping right, returning to the previous menu is swiping left.

  7. Clean up all directories in the phone's memory (they will be created again when the system is rebooted). For this:
  8. Install CyanogenMod 12.1:
  9. Equip the system with services and Google apps by installing the file "gapps-modular-pico-5.1.1-signed.zip". The steps are exactly the same as those for installing the CyanogenMod package, described in the previous paragraph of this manual.

  10. Finally, it's time to reboot into the installed modified Android. Activate "reboot system now" in the CWM main menu and then (important!) - select "No" on the prompt screen "Fix root". Wait for CyanogenMod components to initialize.
  11. After all the components of the custom are optimized, the welcome screen of CyanogenMod will appear with a choice of language. Set the basic parameters related to the functioning of Android.

Now everything is ready to use one of the most popular,

stable and functional systems for Samsung Galaxy ES 2!
