Small workgroup machine with two network interfaces and USB connection

You will not envy the marketers of manufacturers who make up short descriptions models: characterizing devices that are close to model range firms, they have to use subtle definitions. So, the Xerox WorkCentre 3325 MFP we have already reviewed was intended for “small and medium groups”, and the device that we will test today solves the printing tasks facing “small workgroups”. The difference is very conditional, so let's clarify: the main difference in terms of characteristics is a slightly lower print speed and a significantly lower maximum monthly operating time. There is a difference in equipment and, of course, in price.

Let's talk about the MFP. Xerox WorkCentre 3225DNI, which replaced more early model WC3220. The equipment is clear from the last three letters in the index: D - duplex (automatic two-sided printing device), N - Ethernet network interface, I - wireless Wi-Fi interface. The user manual also mentions the WC3225DN variant (that is, without Wi-Fi), as well as a slightly less productive version of the WC3215NI, devoid of duplex. There is also a similar printer based on the same mechanism, only without a scanner; it is called Phaser 3260 and is offered in two versions: 3260DI with duplex and wireless interface, as well as 3260DNI, which, as you might guess, also has a network ethernet adapter. For the WC3215 MFP, the Phaser 3052 printer is an analogue, and all these devices have the same consumables.

  • print cartridge (Drum Cartridge) for 10,000 prints 101R00474, package weight 0.726 kg.

The toner cartridge hours are based on ISO/IEC 19752, and the print cartridge hours are based on an average print job of 3 pages.

On sale there may be toner cartridges with other numbers - 106R02775, 106R02777, but they are not intended for Russian market and are not officially delivered to Russia.

There are no options, including additional input trays, for this machine.

In terms of information support, the claims are the most common, inherent in almost all manufacturers: in order to get full set MFP parameters (for example, we needed this to fill out a complete table of characteristics), you have to use several sources - website pages, information brochures, instructions. In addition, sometimes there are discrepancies: for example, the user manual refers to the Ethernet 10/100/1000 network interface, and in all other sources about Ethernet 10/100.

It is gratifying that a section of the official website in Russian has been made for Russian consumers, there are Russified drivers and documentation for users. In a relationship specific model There is, perhaps, one remark: on the page of the Russian-language section of the site dedicated to the WorkCentre 3225, there is no information about consumables, and you have to visit the English-language one.

And one more claim that we have already expressed: for downloading documentation and drivers, the Russian-language section sends to the international Xerox website and gives lengthy but banal explanations on how to look for information on your model there. Wouldn't it be easier to redirect right away? And for those who are not familiar with English at all, it was possible to make a full-fledged translation for the software download section.

Appearance, control panel, design features

The design style and colors of the MFP are quite familiar to other samples. modern technology Xerox. The device is quite compact, its dimensions are 401 × 363 × 365 mm, and quite light: the net weight is only a little more than 11 kg, and you can’t call it heavy when packed - the box with the MFP weighs 14 kg.

There is nothing unusual in the configuration: as in other devices of this class, the paper is fed transversely relative to the front plane, and the scanner is located longitudinally. The output tray is located in the niche between the print unit and the scanner.

The control panel is located on the forward and slightly inclined part of the scanner. Various buttons are evenly distributed over its entire area, the most commonly used of which - "Start", "Stop" and "Reset" - are highlighted in color and placed on the right side of the panel.

Pressing the buttons does not require undue effort and is worked out clearly, they themselves are convex and protrude slightly from the plane of the panel, so working with them does not cause any discomfort.

The display is quite simple: a two-line monochrome LCD screen, very similar to those found in Panasonic's widely used inexpensive telefaxes. The disadvantages of such displays are known: low resolution, due to which the displayed characters consist of clearly visible dots, small vertical and horizontal viewing angles.

There are also few familiar places, 16 in each of the two lines, so a number of messages or menu items are given in abbreviated form, and not always used abbreviations are immediately clear, and sometimes they are not at all clear, especially when using the Russian language, and you have to consult the instructions. Sometimes some characters are replaced with a question mark:

But in general, we have no serious complaints about Russification, and with regard to some shortcomings noticed, there is hope that they will be corrected in next versions firmware.

The tilt of the control panel is designed for the case when the operator is standing next to the MFP, and not only close, but also at a distance of half a step, then the information on the indicator is read quite normally. In addition, the symbols are large enough, a person with not very good eyesight will not have to strain. But sitting down will not work: due to the small viewing angle, a person of average height simply will not see what is written on the display.

In addition to the LCD screen, there is led indicator states. Its two-color left part indicates the status of the MFP, and the right part indicates the establishment of a wireless connection.

The 250-sheet paper drawer (hereinafter referred to as 80 g/m², unless otherwise noted) is generally convenient, except that the release force of its latch is slightly more comfortable. True, sharp and loud sounds when removing and installing the tray, which we observed in some models different manufacturers, there is no. To estimate the remaining paper, the tray is equipped with a mechanical fill level indicator.

But it’s hard to call the bypass tray very convenient, in the instructions it is even sometimes called not a tray, but a “manual feed slot”: firstly, its capacity is only one sheet, more precisely, one media, since envelopes can also be used as such. Secondly, it is difficult to call it a tray either: the fold-out part, which is usually designed to support the stacked media, in the WC3225 has a depth of no more than five centimeters, and therefore the inserted A4 or Letter sheet simply hangs down.

The claim to the receiving tray is the same as that of the vast majority of similar devices: its capacity is significantly less than the capacity of the input tray - only 120 sheets.

The scanner's ADF has a capacity of 40 sheets. The ADF is not reversing, cannot handle two-sided originals, and in combination with the built-in duplexer, can only output two one-sided originals to one two-sided copy.

The ADF is also the cover of the scanner, its hinges allow the use of originals with increased thickness (books, magazines). If the device is planned to be placed in a niche, then a height of about 59 cm will be required to fully open the lid, but the opening angle of about 45 degrees is normal for it - in this position it is fixed, so the height of the niche can be 3-4 cm less.

As usual, there is a hinged cover on the back of the MFP, behind which is hidden part of the paper path, including duplex. You need to open it in two cases: if paper is jammed or when you need to print on media that does not allow strong bending - when printing to the output tray, the sheets bend 180 degrees, and if you open this cover and use the bypass tray, then there is virtually no bending will be. Naturally, you will have to feed one media at a time, automatic two-sided printing will be impossible, and besides, you need to provide a margin free space behind the printer.

On the left side of the rear wall (when viewed from the back) there is a row of connectors: at the very bottom - power, higher - USB (B) and LAN. A pair of telephone jacks for a line and a parallel device are also located on the back left, but higher, above the hinged back cover.

The device does not have a mechanical switch; to turn it off, you must press and hold the button on the control panel. But the MFP sometimes turns on without using this button, it is enough to apply voltage to the power connector.

Part of the front panel, together with the bypass tray, leans back, for which you need to press the button on its upper edge. This opens up access to the cartridges and part of the paper path to remove the jammed paper.

When carrying the device, there are cutouts in the lower part of the side walls for gripping by hand. Their depth is too small - only the tips of the fingers enter, however, with a small weight of the device, this is not very critical.

Menu operation, settings

After the very first power-on, messages will appear on the indicator prompting you to make initial settings: select the language, set the date-time and their display format, set the units of measurement. There are other possible settings, such as fax options, but these can be skipped; if we answer “No” at the request stage for the administrator password, then this password will not be requested every time we go a little deeper into the menu.

There will be another firmware upgrade request, implying permission to upgrade the firmware of the MFP; if only a USB connection is intended, this function will not work. Our device had firmware version V3.50.01.06 dated June 2014, and the downloaded user manual was dated July of the same year. Nevertheless, differences were found in the manual and in real menu items, and as the firmware is constantly improved (V3.50.01.08 of 03/10/2015 was offered on the company's website at the time of writing the review), there will be more and more such differences. Firmware changes are intended to improve the functioning of the MFP, however, the need for upgrades is determined by the owner or system administrator and is done manually. The procedure is simple, it is described in the instructions, and is performed with network connection using the CentreWare Internet Services web interface.

But back to the menu of the device itself. In the future, it will be possible to change the settings set at the initial stage and set the missed ones (except for some that can only be changed through the web interface). It is desirable that there is paper in the input tray - at the end of the settings, a sheet with a configuration report is printed.

The three left buttons on the control panel select the mode: copy, scan, fax. The default mode, that is, the one in which the MFP will be after turning on the power or exiting the power saving mode, is set using the menu.

The available set of settings is divided into two parts. The first is the operational settings of the current mode (copy, scan, fax), they are called by the left button of the five-button navigation block.

The main part of the settings, including the system ones, as well as the default settings, is called up by pressing the button with the image of a rectangle with the letter “i”, which, when you switch to the settings mode, is highlighted in blue. Here are also network settings, as well as commands for printing various information pages, most of which are Russified. In particular, when initial setup It may be convenient to print out the menu structure, which, although it takes up as many as seven pages, is still more compact than the instructions in printed form, only sections and menu items will be given in English. You can also print counter status and consumable information.

In general, the menu did not seem to us very complicated or unnecessarily overloaded with rarely used settings, although something can still be mentioned: as in other Xerox devices, there is a setting for the altitude above sea level - the instruction explains that the atmospheric pressure, which decreases with increasing height, affects the printing process. It is difficult to say how strong this influence is, but, for example, in the instructions for the WC3325 device there were no clarifications on this matter, just a list of possible settings, and in this case the instructions contain specific recommendations: which setting corresponds to which height range.

When access with an administrative password is set, access to a number of menu sections - default modes, system settings and network - will require you to enter this password. By default, this is “1111”, but if we answered “Yes” to the “Admin Password” request for the first time, then we are given the opportunity to set our own password. You can cancel administrative access or change the password through the web interface.

The default setting is to enter power save mode after 1 minute. It seemed to us not very convenient for work, and we increased the value, since the menu allows you to do this within a wide range, up to 60 minutes.

The timing of low toner warnings can be adjusted from the menu from 1 to 50 percent. “Toner low” is a very relative concept, it strongly depends on the degree of machine utilization, and it is quite logical to allow the user or administrator to configure the alert in accordance with actual operating conditions.

You can send a notice to replace an ink cartridge soon, and email, but it's hard to say how popular such a function will be. However, the very fact of its presence in a device of this class can only be welcomed.

By default, every time the MFP is turned on, a sheet with configuration information is printed - but here the logic of the developers who decided that such information is needed regularly is not very clear. True, printing can also be canceled, this is done in the “System Settings” section. – Setup – Page config.”.

Offline work

At battery life when the MFP is not connected to any communication lines, including telephone lines, the only action possible is copying, since printing files from stand-alone media such as flash drives is not provided. You can print only various information pages and reports that we have already mentioned: about the configuration of the MFP in general and network installations, about the status of the counters, where you can see the number of printed pages, scanned images, and received-sent fax messages. Despite the presence of duplex, multi-page reports are printed on only one side of the sheet.

copying

The copy control screen displays the number of copies, which can be quickly changed from 1 to 99 using the number buttons, and the zoom.

For copying, you can set the size and type (text, text / photo, photo) of the original, scaling, adjust the density (darker-lighter) and set the background processing when copying from newspapers or colored paper, as well as determine the use of duplex, copy sorting and layout - up to 4 pages of originals on one sheet of a copy or copying of certificates (two spreads on one sheet; by the way, passport copies in this mode are very high quality even without selecting settings).

As we have already said, you can change some copying parameters, except for the number of copies, after pressing the left button of the five-button navigation block.

All these settings are carried out quite quickly, without unnecessarily long wanderings through the menu. different levels. Of course, a number of settings can be set as default settings.

Two-sided copies can be made from single-sided documents by placing them not only in the automatic document feeder, but also on the glass, which is useful when working with bound or bound materials. If originals are copied from the glass in this mode, then after scanning the first sheet or spread, a request for the next sheet will follow, to which you can answer “Yes” or, if you change your mind, “No”.

When placing originals on the glass and in the ADF at the same time, the automatic document feeder has priority.

Local USB connection

Three types of print drivers are provided when installing the software: PCL, PS, and XPS. You can install a number of additional utilities and programs, including OCR - a text recognition system, which is offered as ABBY FineReader 10 (the version is not the latest, but in the full-featured version of the Professional Edition with an activation code, and not a truncated Sprint, and there is a separate installation disk).

You can also install the utility wireless settings Easy Wireless Setup, which is not needed when connected locally.

As usual, you first need to start installing the software, set the connection type - in this case USB:

Connect the MFP to the computer with a USB cable at the request of the installer:

As usual, at the end of the installation, it is proposed to register the Xerox product.

We installed the PCL and PS drivers:

The interface of the print settings window is similar to what we have seen with other MFPs from the company. That's just for some reason we have established English language, and indications of driver versions, which are usually displayed in one of the tabs, were absent here, they had to be found out by inf files: for PCL there was version 3.12.38.03 dated 04/22/2014, for PS - 2.01.00.02 dated 04/01/2014. Appearance bookmarks for both drivers are the same, and the set of settings differs only in small details: for example, for PS there is the possibility of mirroring the printed sheet.

Note: in the right part of the window there is an additional field that displays the changes that will occur with the print during a particular installation, or information about the printer settings.

This is visual and therefore convenient, but any convenience has its price: not very powerful computer navigating through bookmarks and working out settings changes occur with a noticeable delay.

There are two print quality options: Standard and High Resolution. In addition, there is a toner saving mode.

The Eco tab, available in both drivers, is designed to save everything and everyone:

As you can see, if you place two pages of text on one sheet (of course, with a corresponding reduction), skip blank pages and turn on toner saving, you can save up to half the energy, three-quarters reduce paper consumption, and about the same amount - CO2 emissions. 2 to the atmosphere. This, of course, is wonderful, but if the main task is to save resources and preserve the environment, and not office printing and other types of work, then it is probably better not to turn on the MFP at all, or even not to buy it at all. But this is how the question is seen from the point of view of the Russian consumer; perhaps in the West the priorities are different.

Autoload includes Xerox Network PC Fax and the Xerox MFP Fax Server service, as well as the Easy Printer Manager utility familiar to us from other Xerox MFP models, which allows you to monitor the status of the machine, including information about the remaining toner, and also call programs for scanning and faxing ( if, of course, they were installed).

Of course, the program's capabilities are not limited to displaying the state, you just need to switch to the advanced mode. And then we will get very convenient access to the settings available in the MFP menu; to all or not to all - we did not compare the points, but the number of settings is impressive.

From Easy Printer Manager, you can switch to scanning and faxing, but you need to install the appropriate software for this.

Scan to PC

For scanning in information materials (website, brochure) it is indicated standard resolution 600×600 dpi, and in the instructions - optical 1200×1200 dpi. We tend to believe that both values are correct, only the lower one refers to scanning from the ADF, and the higher one - from the flatbed (glass).

Color depth is 24-bit color and 8-bit gray scale. There is also a black and white mode (1 bit).

USB connection installs TWAIN drivers (v.3.31.48.03 dated 04/14/2014) and WIA:

There is nothing special to say about the WIA interface, and the TWAIN driver is much more interesting: Xerox has it full of various settings and tools, including even a histogram, and the results of adjustments and settings can be viewed immediately in the pre-scan window (except for scaling).

The resolution in the TWAIN driver can be set from 75 to 4800 dpi for both the ADF and the flatbed (glass). Naturally, the maximum values are an interpolation, and their use does not make much sense. WIA allows you to set values from 75 to 600 dpi for both placements of originals.

In this case, the automatic feeder no longer has priority, the source specified in the corresponding field of the driver is used. But if there is a document in the ADF, the driver will be the first to offer the ADF as the source.

Preview when working with APO becomes impossible. But the maximum scanning area of the ADF is larger, which is also clearly visible in the driver viewport (compare with the above screenshot for a tablet):

If your computer does not have programs that support the Acquire function, you can use the Easy Document Creator program, which can be accessed from Easy Printer Manager or from the All Programs list.

Its settings allow you to set the resolution from 75 to 600 dpi, color mode, document size and save format.

The quick scan feature saves the scan to a selected folder, while the advanced scan provides other options.

You can also initiate a scan from the control panel of the MFP, including to a connected via USB computer. True, you will have to press the buttons a little: select the scan mode, set the receiver - local PC, and profile, then select the resolution, color, file saving format and original size. At the end of the scanning process, a request for the next page will follow, and the file will appear in the folder specified when creating the profile with a name containing the word “Scan” and date-time.

LAN connection

As usual, for devices with two network interfaces, we start by connecting to a wired network. By default, the MFP is set to receive network settings from a DHCP server; connect the device with a patch cord to local network, after which it is better to turn it off and on.

To make sure that network settings received correctly, you can print the configuration page:

left - before connecting to the network, right - after: IP address and other parameters obtained

The "TCP/IP Settings" column should display the IP address, mask, and gateway that match your network settings. Naturally, all this can be set manually using the MFP menu.

After starting the installation from the CD, at the stage of choosing the type of connection, select "Network connection":

If we are sure that the MFP is connected to the network correctly, we answer “No” to the following request:

The next steps are the same as for the USB connection. This time, among the installed software, we also chose "Easy Wireless Setup" to try out the work of this utility when testing a wireless connection.

Only the TWAIN driver is installed for the scanner.

If installed Easy program Printer Manager, then you can manage the device using it:

And you can also use the machine's web interface, which is called CentreWare Internet Services, and is called either by the corresponding Printer Manager button, or by typing the MFP's IP address in the browser.

In order to be able to change settings using it, you need to log in by entering your login and password (admin and 1111 by default), otherwise you will only be able to view pages with information about the MFP, consumables, etc.

Recall how you can disable the password request when working with the MFP control panel menu, if such a request was previously enabled: “Properties - Security - System Security - System Administrator”, uncheck the box “Control panel security - Access control from loc. interface" and click "Apply". If such a request was turned off, but it needs to be turned on, then there will be no checkmark, and it must be set. You can also change the administrator password here.

In the web interface, we also found confirmation of the fact that the wired interface is not Gigabit Ethernet at all, as stated in the user manual:

Let's move on to wireless. First, using the menu or the web interface, you need to make sure that the Wi-Fi adapter is enabled: “Network - Wi-Fi”, and then we will try the Xerox Easy Wireless Setup utility.

Oddly enough, it certainly requires you to connect the MFP with a USB cable:

After connecting, the picture is replaced by a list of available networks:

We select the one you need and enter the password (if required), after a while the connection will be established, which is indicated by the blue indicator below the LCD display of the MFP control panel and the corresponding utility message. The USB cable can be disconnected if such a connection will not be used, but there is also a Xerox WC3225 printer with a USB connection in Devices and Printers, which can also be removed.

The MFP connected to the network has the same printing methods and settings as when connected locally, but it also has the ability to print from mobile devices: smartphones or tablets. Apple devices iOS devices can use the AirPrint driverless printing feature. Internet-connected devices can print via Google service cloud print. For such cases, the manufacturer has its own solution - Xerox PrintBack.

For scanning also appear additional features- scan to network computer and to WSD (Web Services on Devices), as well as to e-mail, including simultaneous distribution to several addresses.

Working with Fax Messages

Because our test lab does not have an analog phone line, we are not experimenting with faxes. Therefore, we will only briefly describe the capabilities provided by the Xerox WC3225DNI MFP.

The resolution setting has four gradations: standard, clear, very clear and photo (no dpi values specified). A color fax is also included in the same menu item, but sending messages in color is possible only in manual mode and, of course, if the receiving device supports such a mode. Other settings include original size and brightness. Of course, there are settings related directly to the fax functions - multicast, delayed and priority sending, forwarding of sent and received messages to a network PC or another fax, etc. There is also an address book in which you can include speed and group dial numbers.

Faxing is not much different from copying or scanning, it's just that the first screen that appears is dialing phone number. To access other parameters, you need to use the corresponding button.

To send fax messages from a computer to which the MFP is connected in one way or another, you must use the Xerox MFP PC Fax driver, which must be installed in advance.

Tests

For testing, we use our own methodology, available for repetition, and the results we receive may not match those indicated on the official sites. The previously used methodology, revised and supplemented, was adopted as a basis.

Reaching readiness after switching on: 17 s (five measurements with averaging); measured from pressing the power button to the end various processes, accompanied by the corresponding sounds, and the appearance start page on the printer screen.

Copy speed

The copying time of a full-color A4 original at a scale of 1:1 (test chart), from start to full sheet output - two measurements with averaging.

Copying time within the measurement error is the same when the original type is set to "Text" and "Text / Photo", but when set to "Photo" it increases significantly.

Maximum copy speed of A4 monochrome text original at 1:1 scale (calculated from 25 pages; plain paper, Text original type, ADF operation).

Declared in the characteristics maximum speed one-sided copying 28 cpm. is close to the value we obtained, and for two-sided copying modes, the speed is not indicated in the characteristics.

Print speed

The PCL driver was used when printing from a computer.

Printing 11 A4 sheets with text information (PDF file) at default settings, counting down from the first sheet ejected.

The maximum print speed fully corresponds to the declared value of 28 ppm.

high resolution2:05 9,6 2:10 9,2 2:45 7,3

When printing a PDF file with "High Resolution" quality via USB or Ethernet, the printer pauses after every 2 pages, so the speed is much slower. At wireless connection There are also pauses in Standard quality - not so regular, but greatly slowing down printing: the speed drops by half.

30 page DOC file(Standart quality, 10 pt Times New Roman text, 12 pt headings, from MS Word), default printer settings, USB connection.

*) duplex printing should be assigned in the printer properties (i.e. by means of the driver), and not in the print dialog of MS Word.

The print speed in both modes turned out to be close to the declared one - 28 ppm, respectively. and 12 sides/min. Double-sided printing saves half the paper, but more than doubles the print time.

Scan speed

Scan from the glass of the A4 test strip in color (True Color) at different resolutions, from the start to the appearance of the image in the program window. All other default settings, any processing by means of the driver are disabled. Two measurements with averaging.

At high resolutions, information transfer plays a decisive role, at low resolutions, the speed of the scanner mechanisms, so the scanning time at 300 and 100 turned out to be virtually the same, the difference is noticeable only with a wireless connection.

Speed of work with different connection methods

The following tests are carried out only to assess the difference in speed when connected to a specific computer via different interfaces, since they strongly depend both on the properties of the computer itself and on the degree of network load (in our test network, the exchange takes place only between the MFP and the computer). AT wireless network Both the test computer and the MFP were connected via Wi-Fi.

Printing time for an A4 photo saved in PDF format at different installations quality (from clicking "Print" to the output of the sheet, software improvements in the driver are disabled) with different ways to connect a computer; the measurement was carried out twice with the averaging of the result.

Based on the results of the tests, we can conclude that working with the MFP will be the fastest with a local USB connection. A 10/100 Ethernet connection is somewhat slower, but the difference is not too dramatic.

But work with a wireless connection in some cases simply cannot be called comfortable: the speed of printing or scanning is noticeably, sometimes several times, less than with wired connections, although in the test network (any - wired or wireless) there are only an MFP and a test computer. Most likely, the fact is that the maximum connection speed does not correspond to 802.11n declared in all sources, but to a maximum of 802.11g, which is also confirmed by the information displayed in the web interface:

As you can see, despite the excellent signal quality, the connection only complies with 802.11bg. We could not correct the situation, our test equipment with other MFP models worked fine on 802.11n, and there is a suspicion that the built-in WC3225 wifi adapter just doesn't work anymore high speeds, and there is an error or typo in the documentation.

Noise measurement

Measurements are made with the microphone at the head level of a seated person and at a distance of one meter from the MFP.

The background noise level is not more than 30 dBA - a quiet office space, only an MFP and a test laptop work from equipment, lighting ( fluorescent lamps) and the air conditioner is turned off.

Measurements were made for the following modes:

  1. peak value when turned on,
  2. one-sided printing,
  3. two-sided printing,
  4. glass scanning,
  5. scanning using the ADF,
  6. one-sided copying using the automatic document feeder,
  7. copying one-sided originals to two-sided copies using the automatic document feeder.

Since the noise is uneven, the table shows the maximum level values for the listed modes, the observed short-term peak levels are given through a fraction.

In roomABCDEFG
Noise, dBA 48 54,5 / 61 55 / 61 33,5 / 47,5 50,5 / 53,5 53 / 55,5 54 / 58,7

According to our subjective assessment, the MFP, in comparison with many similar devices that we have visited, works very quietly. As you can see, this is also confirmed by objective instrumental noise measurements.

Feed path test

Just over 400 pages were printed in previous tests on 80gsm C-grade paper, some of them using duplex.

There were no problems with the feed, but there is no need to praise a completely new device for this: that's just how it should be.

It should be noted that the remaining toner displayed at this stage does not really correspond to the one and a half thousand prints declared for the toner cartridge:

But there is a simple explanation for this: page coverage in most of our tests exceeds (sometimes significantly) the value of 5%, by which the potential operating time of such a cartridge is estimated. This situation is quite real for any office work, therefore, along with the MFP, it is better to immediately buy a spare toner cartridge.

Now we need to evaluate the work with paper of greater density. As is usually the case, different MFP assemblies differ in acceptable media density ranges; we checked the declared parameters, including those with going beyond the specified ranges (but without a significant excess - the task was not set to make the MFP “choke” on paper by all means), and summarized the results in a table.

We used paper of our declared densities: 65, 100, 120, 160, 200, 220 and 280 g/m², so the lower limit had to be specified as 65 g/m². The number of pages per job for each density is 10-12, when single-sheet feeding from the bypass tray is 6 (with output to the output tray).

*) 55–60 g/m² paper was out of stock

Thus, in this case, the specifications are clearly modest: all units of the device normally cope with paper, the density of which is noticeably higher than the declared maximum. But we remind you that the use of media with parameters that go beyond the official specifications can only be done by the owner at his own peril and risk.

To work with other types of media - envelopes, transparencies, labels - the instruction requires using only the bypass tray. We adhered to this requirement, although the media had to be submitted one at a time. Actually, there is no need to talk a lot about this: the MFP did quite well with six envelopes and the same number of tracing paper sheets.

Print quality

Recall: when printing, there are two quality gradations - Standard and High Resolution, for each of which you can enable toner saving; when copying, the quality is determined by the selected original type - text, text/photo and photo.

The minimum possible margins are about 4 mm on each side of the sheet.

Text Documents

When printing, readability is unambiguously preserved up to the 6th size, not only with any selected quality, but also with toner saving enabled. The fourth size without saving toner can also be considered readable for both quality gradations, but readability is worse for serif fonts. The second size cannot be read even with a magnifying glass.

The raster is hardly noticeable, mainly on small sizes in the form of uneven thin lines. But after toner saving is turned on, the raster becomes easily distinguishable, the fill becomes significantly paler, which is why documents printed with toner saving are mainly suitable for the role of drafts, although readability is not bad. And here is the inclusion high definition does not give much difference in comparison with the standard one, even with an increase it is difficult to find any differences.

From left to right: Standard, High Resolution, Standard + Toner Save

It is interesting that when copying from the original, on which the second size is also readable, the readability of the copy, as in printing, is preserved up to the 4th size. True, the fill when set to "Text" turns out to be too dense, which can be compensated by the "Lighter" setting, but it's better to simply set "Text-photo" or "Photo".

test strip

The print quality of the test strip can be assessed as quite normal: the fills are dense, the gradients are uniform, the neutral density scale is distinguishable from 1–2 to 92–93 percent. The picture is slightly spoiled by regular stripes across the movement of the sheet, and this despite the fact that we printed the samples at the very beginning of work, and therefore the drum could not be worn or damaged during other tests.

In normal printing, serif and sans-serif fonts are readable from the 4th size, for reverse the situation is a little worse: only the 5th size is read more or less normally, and even then in a sans-serif font, but with serifs - already with difficulty. Decorative fonts are readable only with a font size of 7 (normal) and 9 (reverse).

The above applies to both gradations of quality, the differences of which consist only in a slightly different number of distinguishable lines per inch: if for Standard it is 75–80 lpi, then for High Resolution 70–75.

When copying, the print turns out to be excessively contrasting, both in the “Text” and “Text-Photo” modes; with the "Photo" setting, the situation is slightly better.

Photo

For an MFP of this class, the quality of printing photos is not bad, and copying too - you just need to set the "Photo" mode.

conclusions

First about money: prices at price.ru for MFPs Xerox WorkCentre 3225DNI at the time of writing the review, they started from 10-10.5 thousand rubles, for high-capacity cartridges for it - from 3.7-3.8 thousand.

What we get: a fairly compact, but quite versatile device with three interfaces and good performance that can meet the needs of printing, copying and scanning of a small office or company division, not to mention home users.

From positive aspects note the relatively low noise level during operation, as well as the ability to work with a wide range of paper weights. The disadvantages include extremely slow work with a wireless connection, but perhaps this is not a matter of technology, but of the “human factor”: if all sources spoke not about 802.11bgn, but about 802.11bg, then it would immediately be clear why can be expected from a Wi-Fi connection.

The absence of such amenities as a reversing automatic feeder or the ability to work with removable media such as USB flash drives, as well as a single-sheet bypass tray and a modest LCD display, will not be considered a disadvantage: the equipment is always proportional to the price, and those users who lack any WC3225DNI functions are vital, they may well choose a more expensive model in the Xerox product line that can meet their needs.
