Well-known Windows blogger Paul Thuroth loves Microsoft, which is why he uses a computer from rival Apple (sarcasm). But he also has Windows 10 on his Mac, and today Paul will tell us all how he did it.

There are two ways to install Windows on a Mac - Apple's dedicated BootCamp software, which lets you boot your PC into either Windows or OS X, or a virtual machine like Parallels Desktop. This article will focus on the first option.

Paul writes that his goal is to talk about how to install and configure Windows 10 on a Mac "as optimally as possible." Microsoft's OS will never work perfectly on a "poppy" - Apple does not consider it necessary to regularly update the necessary drivers and "adjust" to someone else's OS. But it's better than nothing.

Let's start with the minimum system requirements:

  • Windows 10 installation file ISO format. You will need either licensed copy, which most users probably already have, or an ISO file with the system (activation is - for now - optional). Attention! You only need to download the 64-bit version, they are not friends with 32-bit Macs.
  • Mac computer - iMac, MacBook, Mac mini, Mac Pro 2012 or newer, running OS X (X, by the way, means "10", not "ex") Yosemite or El Capitan.
  • Flash drive 4 GB or more.
  • Free space - at least 20 GB.

Ready? Go to the app store Apple Mac App Store and install all updates.

Open Boot Camp Assistant. The simplest way To do this, press Cmd + space and enter the word boot camp in the Spotlight search bar that opens.

Boot Camp walks you through the process of creating a Windows partition on your Mac's drive. To do this, he will need a Windows 10 ISO file and a 4 GB flash drive or more, depending on Windows versions. In addition, the assistant will download from the Internet latest drivers Apple for your work.

After the flash drive is written - the Boot Camp folder with the appropriate drivers will appear on it - you will be prompted to allocate space for the Windows partition. It is advisable to allocate more than the default 20 GB - after all, Windows, as you know, likes to “grow” in breadth, and twenty gigabytes is only enough to run one or two applications that the user needs. With the help of a special “curtain” in the BootCamp assistant, it is very easy to adjust the amount of storage allocated under Windows. If desired, you can simply split the Mac disk in half. Paul took advantage last option- his Macbook Air equipped with 256 GB of internal memory, so there was enough space for both OS X and Windows.

If you left the "Install Windows 7 or later version" box checked, Boot Camp will restart your Mac and begin the installation. If you removed it, you can go back and, for example, give Windows more / less space, and only then check the box and go directly to installing Windows.

Things to keep in mind:

During installation license key input is optional. You can generally use the "trial" until Microsoft decides to "close shop".

Format the disk partition called BOOTCAMP! Then install Windows exactly there and nowhere else.

After the installation is completed, you will be on the desktop Windows desktop 10. The Boot Camp installer will immediately appear on the screen. Its task is to install the necessary drivers so that Windows "understands" what kind of hardware it will have to work with. Be sure to install them!

Next, connect to the Internet and run windows update. Install all updates, reboot.

Next, find the Boot Camp icon in the Taskbar and see the options available to customize your keyboard and trackpad. For the second, there are a couple of interesting settings - the ability to make a click with one touch or perform the same operation by clicking on the lower right corner of the touchpad.

After that, sign in to your Microsoft account, make yourself a convenient sign-in PIN, and open the Store. Go to the Downloads section and look for software updates. In general, that's all, now we proceed to the "particulars".

The problem, writes Paul, is that out of the box Windows won't work on a Mac. The operating time compared to the same indicator of the MacBook Air in OS X will be short, the magnificent trackpad from the MacOS in Windows will turn out to be only a pale shadow of itself, there will be problems with the keyboard. In addition, "on the fly" it is unlikely that anyone will guess how to reboot from Windows to OS X.

Battery. By official information According to Apple's website, a 13-inch Macbook Air running OS X has up to 12 hours of battery life (Paul reckons his 2014 model might be 1-2 hours less). Under windows laptop will not work even half of this time - the lack of software optimization for Air affects. A small utility called . The only negative is that it will be possible to say goodbye to the quality work of the trackpad. But if you active user the usual "mouse", there's nothing wrong with that.

trackpad. The Trackpad++ utility, another development from the creators of Power Plan Assistant, will help improve its performance. Third-party software is many times better than the “default” one from Apple, so for those who like to control an “apple” laptop through the touch panel, this program is one of the must-haves. There were some drawbacks here too - the trackpad settings panel turned out to be unnecessarily complicated. As in the case of Power Plan Assistant, you will have to disable one of the digital signatures for 64-bit systems. Worst of all, Trackpad++ often provokes " blue screen death" (Paul saw him even during the installation of the software).

Buttons on the keyboard. On the keyboard of any PC on Windows, at the bottom left, you can find purely “Microsoft” buttons - Ctrl, Windows key and alt. The Fn button is also found on laptops. On Macs, things are a little different. On the left side of Paul's MacBook Air, there are Fn, Ctrl, Alt/Option, and Command (Cmd) buttons. In Windows 10, the first three buttons work as intended, and Command replaces the Win key. You can leave everything as it is - or you can use the KeyTweak utility and put the buttons in their usual Windows places. KeyTweak's capabilities allow you to do more - for example, Paul got the Delete button on his MacBook Air by entering the Fn + Delete command.

How to switch between Windows and OS X. Want to return to OS X? There are two options - either click on the Boot Camp icon in the Taskbar and select "Reboot to OS X", or initiate a simple reboot and immediately after sound signal hold down the Alt / Option button on the keyboard. You will be able to choose which system to run. To switch to Windows from OS X, open System settings, select the Boot volume item and click on the BOOTCAMP Windows inscription. The computer will automatically boot to the selected system until you change the default "boot" system.

Afterword

Paul laments that it's Apple's fault that Windows doesn't work perfectly on Macs. Cupertino consciously do not want to do optimization work - suffice it to say that some drivers of the current Boot Camp 6 have not been updated for more than 3 years! The Apple company is probably right about something - after all, most Mac and OS X lovers need Windows only for 1-2 programs that simply cannot be found under the Apple operating system. Perhaps for this it is better to install Windows on a virtual machine - but then the question of resources may arise, because for the correct operation of the "virtual" you need a lot of space, random access memory and computing power.

Boot Camp is ideal for those IT enthusiasts who love Apple hardware (for obvious reasons) but prefer the Microsoft platform (also for obvious reasons). Turot admits that if he had a chance to install Windows on a Mac through Boot Camp again, he would take OS X a minimum of space and would not "bother" with utilities like Power Plan Assistant and TrackPad ++, but would simply use the mouse. Of course, he would have lost one of the key advantages of an Apple laptop - a cool touchpad. But what can you do - from Windows on Mac, as already mentioned, no one expects a perfect job.

P.S. Are there Mac users among our readers working through Windows (10)?

Not so long ago, Apple released a new generation of laptops. Macbook Pro. The devices received, perhaps, the most significant update in the entire history of the existence of this series. And it's not just a significantly updated design (which is rare for Apple branded laptops), a completely new set of connectors and, of course, improved performance, but, above all, the appearance of an innovative control element: touch panel touch bar with fingerprint scanner finger touch ID.

Traditionally, Apple is very conservative in the laptop segment. Having released one model, the company then updates only the filling for several years - the processor and graphics accelerator. However, in 2015 the lineup was expanded by the 12-inch MacBook, effectively replacing the MacBook Air, and now it's time for a radical rethinking of the MacBook Pro concept.

As always, it is difficult to find adequate competitors for the MacBook Pro on the market. Models that are more or less comparable in price, as a rule, have lower performance. On the other hand, you can find Windows laptops similar in size and performance, but they will cost much more - it will be a completely different price category, and some characteristics will be noticeably better (screen resolution, for example), which is not always justified in such laptops.

Well, and, moreover, it is difficult to find a Windows laptop that would last as long on battery power as Apple device. This is due, among other things, to the energy efficiency of the macOS operating system.

Installing Windows on a Mac

It is very difficult to install the macOS operating system on a typical Windows computer, and even then it is not a fact that everything will work. In most cases, the so-called "Hackintosh" is used - a special assembly of macOS, which, after performing special rituals "with dances and tambourines", is able to run on a regular PC. However, if the user is lucky with motherboard, then after flashing the BIOS and replacing the bootloader, you can even install the official macOS distribution kit, which will even receive regular updates from the Apple server. Some, however, also call this method a hackintosh.

But to put Windows on any Mac is easier than a steamed turnip. No more difficult than installing Windows on any "regular" computer, maybe a little longer. The easiest way to install Windows on a Mac is with the built-in macOS Boot Camp Assistant, which will help you partition your drive, set up the bootloader, and prepare bootable flash drive with drivers and distribution image.

Note that even if you prefer virtualization when installing multiple operating systems on your computer, this is not a problem in macOS either: Parallels Desktop, the most popular virtual machine for Mac (in which you can work with Windows applications and windows in the same way as with macOS), allows you to work with installed in Boot Camp Windows and does not require additional manipulations: that is, you can use Windows both in virtualization mode and by booting into it separately. But in this article, we will only work with Boot Camp.

So, we stock up on an external USB drive, and a 16-gigabyte flash drive. Now it's up to the small - we start Boot Camp.

First, the utility will ask what we are actually going to do. Click the Select ISO Disk Image button. Boot Camp will offer to use a USB flash drive to save drivers and other useful utilities that will come in handy when working in Windows. The next step is disk partitioning.

Usually disk partitioning programs are quite complicated for beginners, but here everything is elementary - you don’t have to do anything with your hands. Unless, pull the slider, choosing how much space on the built-in drive will be allocated for macOS, and how much for Windows. We were too lazy to choose, so we just pressed the "Divide into equal parts" button. To be honest, so to speak.

Basically, that's all. After clicking the "Install" button, Boot Camp will start preparing the USB flash drive. At this time, you can go to drink tea. Boot Camp will work for about half an hour, it all depends on how much you have to download from the Internet.

After Boot Camp finishes, the computer will restart and Windows installation will begin according to the usual scenario. Choose a country, a keyboard, lean back in your chair, when you select, lean back in your chair again - and so on. Unless, you have to manually format the newly created partition in NTFS. But Windows will warn you about it.

When Windows installs and finally boots up, it will install the same Windows support software from Apple that it includes.

Run Windows on Mac

How does Windows 10 feel on a MacBook Pro? Feels great. This is not surprising - the "hardware" of poppies is quite common.

To help the mac driver, who has just left the friendly and familiar world of macOS and got into Windows - the world is little known to him, and therefore hostile, there is the Boot Camp Control Panel, which is automatically installed just from a USB flash drive. The icon of this application is placed in the tray and you can always call it from there.

After installation is complete, open windows settings and download all system updates. In the second step, you need to go to the app store and update the main programs. This will also take some time.

Notably, Windows 10 recommends using a resolution of 2560 x 1600 on your MacBook Pro. The scanner built into the Touch Bar Fingerprint Touch ID refuses to work, since Apple has not released the appropriate drivers, and the touch panel itself will only offer standard set function keys: Touch Bar functionality is only available in macOS environments.

The trackpad bar in Windows 10 functions in much the same way as it does in the Apple operating system. You can configure any gestures to perform the most different actions one, two, three and four fingers. True, you cannot assign a three-finger press to launch Cortana.

By the way, the logical drive with macOS (which is formatted in HFS +) is also accessible from Windows. True, read-only. It will not work to delete something from it, as well as create a folder or file.

By the way, formatting will also fail - the system will give an error. But it's better not to do this anyway - if you try, it may crash and you will have to restore macOS through Recovery. From macOS, a Windows drive (formatted in NTFS) is also readable, but may not be writable.

Activate Windows or not?

It should be understood that there is nothing to worry about if you do not activate Windows 10. Gone are the days when Windows scared users with a black desktop and activation reminders. Now there is a watermark in the lower right corner of the screen, which notifies that the OS has not been activated.

Why did Microsoft decide not to seriously limit the performance of an unlicensed version of the operating system? Nobody knows. The functionality of non-activated Windows 10 is practically not broken. In this case, system personalization will not be available. This means that the user will not be able to change the theme color, desktop wallpaper, and icons. In addition, the OS will not allow you to synchronize settings with another device. Otherwise, it will be a fully functional platform.

Download and select OS

On a Mac, there is no familiar OS selection menu. By default, after installing Windows in Boot Camp, the laptop, when rebooted or turned on, will boot into macOS without any issues. If you want to boot into Windows, you need to hold down the Alt button while booting - then the boot partition selection menu will appear. If you didn’t install anything else, then there will be two partitions: macOS and Windows. We select the second one and boot into Windows.

And since Windows will reboot much more often than macOS, which generally rarely requires a reboot, it makes sense in the Boot Camp utility on Windows to set Windows to boot by default. Even if you very rarely use Microsoft operating systems, believe me, it will be easier this way. After all, you will have to turn off or restart your Mac under macOS even less often.

Removing Windows from a Mac

Without this paragraph, the article would not be complete. What to do if Windows on Mac is no longer needed and needs to be removed? Apple has taken care of that too. Boot into macOS, launch Boot Camp Assistant and select Uninstall Windows 8 or later.

That's it, nothing else is needed - the program itself will erase the disk partition that is no longer needed and fill the remaining space with the main partition.

Removing Windows has never been so fast - the whole procedure took less than a minute.

Outcome

Practice shows that Apple still produces the best laptops in the world. Reliable, powerful, lightweight, energy efficient. But even if the world of Windows doesn't let you go, all is not lost. Apple has taken care of the user and provided him with an amazing opportunity to use Windows on a Mac, if necessary.

If you have never reinstalled an operating system in your life and, moreover, have not installed several operating systems on one computer, Boot Camp will still not let you get confused. You won't even have time to get scared - a minimum of questions and Boot Camp is already starting to work. Well, if you are a geek with experience, then you will certainly be surprised by the simplicity and ease of the process. Although, it is worth noting that not every geek is able to appreciate the simplicity and ease.

If you have a computer on a Mac, you probably already noticed that there are many similarities between the operating systems of Apple and Microsoft, but even more different. Windows 10 often offers its users features that are not in macOS and quite the contrary. Therefore, sometimes it becomes necessary to install Windows 10 on Mac. It is very easy to do this.

Preparing to install Windows 10 on Mac

To begin with, you must make sure that you have everything you need to install the Microsoft operating system on an Apple computer. You will need:

  • USB flash drive with at least 5 GB.
  • operating room Windows system 10 as an ISO file.
  • Internet connection.
  • Lots of free time.

Please note that you will need a Windows computer and the Media Creation Tool to download the official ISO files. If you do not currently have access to a PC, you will need to download an operating system image from the Internet. In addition, you will definitely need a password from account current user on Mac. If you do not have euj, then you will not be able to install Windows 10 on a Mac.

Pay attention again: even though you get installation image Windows 10 is free, after installation you will need to activate the operating system. You will be able to use it without activation for a while, but you won't have access to some features like personalization. If you want to install Windows 10 on a Mac for permanent use as a primary or side system, make sure you have an official activation key. No one will prevent you from activating the system illegally, but we strongly do not recommend doing so.

How to download a Windows 10 installation image

If you have no computer on windows 10, then you will have to search the Internet for clean ISO files to install the operating system. Thankfully, the Internet is full of this stuff. If you are too lazy to look, just look at the link in the article "". There you will find everything available ways, allowing you to legally download the official Windows image 10.

If you have have access to Windows 10 or any other version of Windows, then you need to use the utility Windows Media creation tool.

  1. Download WMCT from the link from the official Microsoft website.
  2. Launch the utility and agree to the terms of use. On the second screen, select an option Create installation media.
  3. The next step is to select the language, bit depth and edition of Windows 10. Please note that the Windows Media Creation Tool will automatically select the settings that are relevant for given Windows 10 computer. It is not certain that they will fit your Mac (for example, you download the image to budget computer with 32-bit Windows 10). Therefore, you should uncheck the box next to Use the recommended settings for this computer.

  4. Choose the language that suits you. Bit depth - 64-bit (32-bit does not make sense to install on a Mac. You can find an explanation in the instructions). Editing is up to you. You can choose Home, you can choose Pro. It all depends on which version you have the key for. If there is no key and you want to download Windows 10 for evaluation purposes (or then pirate it, to be honest), then choose the one that you like. Though Enterprise, though China SL. For more information on how Windows 10 editions differ, see the instructions.
  5. The system will warn you that the edition of the installation media may not match the edition of Windows on your computer. Ignore this message and click OK.

  6. Next, select an item ISO file l. This option will give you a final image that you can copy to a flash drive or cloud for later use. The option to write to a USB drive will not work in this case.

  7. The last step is to specify the location where to save the ISO file. After that, the application will start downloading the image. Wait for the process to complete. Its duration will depend on the speed of your Internet connection.

Installing Windows 10 on Mac

When all the preparatory work is completed, you can proceed to install the "Windows" itself on the Mac.

  1. Connect a USB drive to your computer and copy the operating system ISO file from it to your desktop. If you downloaded the image directly from a poppy, plug in the USB drive anyway, you just don’t need to copy anything from it.
  2. Open search Spotlight and type boot camp. AT search results you will see Boot Camp Assistant. Launch this application.

  3. On the intro screen, press Proceed.

  4. Make sure all three items in the next step are checked. Items must be checked Create a Windows 7 installation disc or newer, Download the latest Windows support software from Apple, as well as Install Windows 7 or later. Just ignore the fact that BootCamp mentions Windows 7 everywhere.

  5. Next, tell the system the path to your ISO file, and also select the drive where the installation files will be written. Please note that the drive will be completely erased before writing, so take care backup the information you need.

  6. Click Proceed and wait until the application has copied all the necessary data to the media. This process will take some time, depending on the speed of your drive or computer configuration.

  7. The next stage is the distribution of disk volumes. Click on the dot between the disks and drag it to the left to increase the amount of space allocated for Windows partition. If you drag it to the right, the disk will shrink. Alternatively, you can divide the disk into two equal parts. To do this, click the appropriate button Divide into equal parts.

  8. Allow the app to make changes. To do this, enter your account password.

  9. Wait for the partitioning to complete. After this procedure, the computer will go to reboot.

Now the traditional process of installing Windows 10 begins. It is practically no different from installing Windows on a regular PC, with the exception of a few points.

Attention!!! Install Windows 10 only on a drive marked as BOOTCAMP. When you click on it, the system will tell you that you cannot install Windows on this drive because it uses a different file system. This is solved by pressing the Format button in the partition selection interface for installing the operating system.

After installing Windows, swipe initial setup operating system and wait for the download. When you get to the desktop, the BootCamp installation interface will immediately appear. It is very important to install this utility otherwise you will not be able to boot back into macOS. In addition, it installs all the drivers necessary for the operating system. In fact, in just two clicks you will have a system ready to go.

How to switch from Windows 10 to macOS

If you have multiple operating systems installed on your computer, the interface for selecting the one you want appears every time you turn on your PC. This is not possible on a Mac, so switching back to macOS from Windows 10 or from macOS to Windows 10 can be a mystery to the untrained user.

To reboot from Windows 10 to macOS via BootCamp, you just need to click right click mouse over the BootCamp icon in the notification area (gray diamond) and then click Reboot in OS X. Confirm your choice and the system will go to reboot into the apple operating system.

How to switch from macOS to Windows 10 via BootCamp

Again, you'll have to dive into the macOS settings a bit.
